Threadbound

Rate this book
The moment he was born, Jamie Weaver was tied by the threads of fate to a fae prince—he just didn’t know it yet.

When Jamie moved to Edinburgh for graduate school, he wasn’t looking for adventure or romance—he just wanted to escape the monotony of small-town Tennessee and the constant anxiety of having to live with his step-father. The ancient city and even more ancient crags drew him in, and he immersed himself in his studies and the atmosphere of Scotland.

Bran mac Cairn still hasn’t come to terms with the fact that he’s been tied to a half-breed.

If he had to be one of the threadbound, tied to another by drawing his first breath at the same exact instant, why couldn’t he have been tied to someone powerful? Someone interesting? But no, Bran had to be tied to a completely ordinary-seeming human half-breed who had thus far spent his life in a place Bran wouldn’t be caught either dead or alive in.

The threads that bind them are growing impatient.

At twenty-five, all threadbound are expected to formalize their bond. But Jamie knows nothing about it, and Bran has no desire to be any more permanently attached to an annoying mortal than he already is. Except that he also can’t stay away.

I was in a funk when I finished this one and never got around to reviewing it 😬 but I want to at least say that I enjoyed it and let you know Avery is offering Threadbound free January 28, 2025.

PS I have now read Threadbound twice and enjoyed it the second time as much as the first.

Update from K.M. Avery January 28, 2025: So amazon messed up my Romance Book Blast, and decided not to make *Threadbound* free after all.

I've updated to make it free for the next THREE days (assuming they don't mess it up again) for anyone who doesn't have the kindle version.

This book was way to long for no reason. Pages and pages of descriptions of places, descriptions of daily activities, and inner monologues. A lot of it was pointless and didn't add to the story at all. Not much really happens for most of the book. At least 200+ pages could've been cut from this. I struggled to finish this. I feel like I wasted my time because I couldn't even bring myself to care much about either of the main characters by the end. Both spent most of their time making assumptions about the other that made no sense. Assumptions that resulted in a ton of time lost that they could've spent together if they just communicated.

So much potential. All wasted.
The only plot drivers are miscommunication, keeping vital secrets from each other without reason, unprincely whining over the princely duties, general immaturity at the age of 25 (!), and low-self-esteem issues.

Repetitive mundane details of Jamie’s life. His thoughts of the plane trip, of what to have for breakfast, of what is in his wardrobe, of his nonsensical research, of burnt garlic bread, his dialogues with his friends, him being in a café, or club, eating curry or drinking beer, having feelings towards tea or oatmeal, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Even worse – his obsessive memories of his “terrible American childhood” (apparently, he lived in a parallel universe US where there are no social services or free medical treatment for uninsured, otherwise I cannot explain the passages about how awful America is).
Anyway, why do we need all these in the book? And how this boring unnecessary stuff is expected to entertain the readers or drive the plot, or let us know the characters and their dynamics? Dear Author, if I ever want a casserole, I go to my own kitchen; sorry, I really do not need this kind of monotonous mundanity in a book, especially if all these tiresome details, together with repetitive observations and obsessive thoughts go instead of action!

Language. Dear Author! Please find an editor or a reliable beta-reader. Composition, grammar, and vocabulary are the things that can - and in your case should be - corrected. Example:
"And that made things irritatingly more complicated. Not because such relationships were forbidden—the fae were unbothered by dalliances with humans, whether long- or short-term. Bran wasn’t certain that’s what he wanted—he didn’t need things to get any more complicated than they already were, and a sexual entanglement would definitely make things more complicated. To say nothing of what might happen if a sexual entanglement turned into something even more complicated…"
If you have not noticed - there are 4 "complicated" within a paragraph! And I could find more of that.
“His elder sister had been killed by the geàrd when he was seventeen, ambushing her without provocation” – excuse me, who was ambushing his sister? Bran himself? Because that’s what I read!
You NEED an editor!

I started to skip at chapter 20, managed to last until chapter 32 only because I am in a book slump and bored out of my mind. But now I am done. Officially DNF.
Lesson to everyone - do not try to read book with less than 500 ratings and at least 100 written reviews.

Whilst this author is a one click for me, I would still have bought this book just reading the blurb. To Jamie's knowledge he is fully human, living in Edinburgh, just trying to live. Bran Mac Cairn is fighting fate not wanting as he knows a half-breed.
This book has fantastic world build. I liked Jamie and the more you read, you get to learn the reason why he was in Edinburgh. The details of his life, his studies made me feel as I was watching him go about his life. Jamie was a gentle soul who when you were his friend, he loved you dearly.
Bran took me a little while to warm up to him, maybe because of what he originally thought of Jamie,
and yes he did moan a bit but his reasons were well explained the further I got into the book.
Due to the well written world building this was a slower read for me and so different to the other "fated" mates book I read and I loved it. I could not put this down and as I was nearing the end of the book I was torn. I wanted to know what was going to happen but I didn't want it to end. I would love to read more of Jamie and Bran.

Slowest of burns. Slowest of many things really. This is for the people obsessed with world building and knowing a character's every thought. I would barely classify this a romance but as a fantasy novel with a romantic side plot. And considering the title of the book, that may be a little misleading for a person like me that just wants to enjoy a soulmate plotline.

absolutely magical

I am not great at reviews so I rarely leave them, but this story deserves one (though a much better one than I’m capable of writing). I loved everything about this story, the characters, the world building the perfectly magical story telling. I already want to read it again! This story will have a special place. Always.

Dnf at 45%. This was honestly too boring for me. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen or the romance to sweep me off my feet, but nothing. I think it depends on your expectations going in though, you might enjoy this if you like YA or something.

Leisurely pace

I found myself fighting this story as I read it because the pace seemed slower than my brain wanted it to go, but it was ultimately very satisfying.

Threadbound is a fantastic fantasy novel with excellent world building, sympathetic characters, a solid plot line, and love.

Bran is not happy that he is threadbound to a half-human, and with things back home headed for trouble, this is really not the time. Unfortunately, if he wants to be of any help to his family, he needs to address the situation.

Jamie just wants to keep his head down and work on his research. But he can't stop noticing the hot mystery guy haunting his museum. And when Bran is in trouble, Jamie can't walk away.

For those who enjoy fantasy novels with strong world building, an angsty fae, a half-human with baggage, warring courts, interesting and diverse side characters including a fluffy bug and friends who have your back, and of course a happily ever after, this is for you.

I liked their Beyond the Veil series so thought this would be equally enjoyable. Sadly I struggled but I think it was me and not the author. I’m really not a fan of the miscommunication trope and we had this here for 80% of the book - each MC thinks the other isn’t into them - and given the book is 500+ pages you can imagine by page 400 I literally wanted to bang their heads together. The plot was good, in between the pining issues, and I liked the world building of the fae world. I also struggled with the POV. I think you’d describe it 3rd person where we are mid way down a page and we switch from MC1 to MC2 but there’s no clear defined chapters for each MC. I really do not like this and appreciate its my personal preference. I just wasn’t expecting it as the Beyond the Veil, first trilogy, was single POV.

A book with so much potential that desperately needs to be re-written.

Avery has a genuine talent for storytelling. If only anything ever happened in this book. Instead it’s chapters and chapters and chapters of navel gazing.

I’m 50% and not sure I can finish. I’ve already skipped more than 5 chapters due to boredom and character whining.
