The author created flawed yet likable characters whose seedy behavior is simultaneously heroic and immoral. This contradiction, displayed by the protagonist and antagonist, makes the book remarkable. I enjoyed reading about these characters because they felt real, and their conflicts of morality were captivating.
The story begs the question, is murder justified when the victims have done unspeakable crimes to the murderer and hundreds of others? This theme of revenge justifying the crime is compelling and keeps the reader conflicted about whether the accused should be punished. In the end, the reader is left to determine their version of justice and whether or not they agree with the conclusion.
While the theme of morality and revenge keeps the reader conflicted, the plot keeps them guessing as Mike Vogel’s detective work gets closer and closer to solving the crime. My favorite scene was when they pursued the suspect as he attempted to flee New York City by car. The chase involved several police tactics as the suspect wound through the city streets, narrowly escaping right under their noses.
If you love a good detective story, this one will keep you engaged and challenge your views on right versus wrong. This fast-paced story will get your heart pumping and your mind reeling.
