Set against the backdrop of New York City's contrasting landscapes, Shaun Goldsmith's The Spire delves into the dichotomy of a metropolis that is both a tourist's paradise and a locale with a darker, hidden side. The narrative follows veteran detective Mike Vogel as he navigates through the complexities of a double homicide in The Spire, a symbol of affluence in Midtown Manhattan. Characterized by his formidable ego, Vogel faces a convoluted case teeming with an abundance of suspects, pushing his detective skills to their limits.

Goldsmith's writing style is notably brisk and impactful, characterized by straightforward sentences that convey a certain 'too-cool-for-school' attitude commonly found in notable works of the cops-and-robbers narrative. The influence of revered authors such as Elmore Leonard and Raymond Chandler is palpable, with Goldsmith even paying direct homage to Chandler in his writing. The protagonist, Mike Vogel, is a quintessential detective figure whose personal life is overshadowed by his dedication to solving crimes. This portrayal taps into a recurring theme in detective literature: the transformation of a detective's persona, often towards cynicism, due to the nature of their profession. Vogel's character may ring familiar to avid readers of the genre, yet his journey remains engaging.

The Spire excels in its gradual narrative build-up, with the plot intensifying progressively. As readers explore the upper tiers of New York's social strata and delve into the city's underbelly, it becomes clear that the mystery surrounding the Spire murders may not conclude with a definitive resolution. However, this aspect does not detract from the novel's appeal. Instead, the journey alongside Mike Vogel, an intriguing and dynamic character, becomes the focal point of Goldsmith's storytelling.

The Spire offers an immersive experience into the life and mind of a dedicated detective while painting a vivid picture of New York City's multifaceted character. Goldsmith skillfully delivers a narrative that is as much about the intriguing protagonist as it is about the unfolding mystery, making it a captivating read for fans of the genre.

Shaun Goldsmith's The Spire delivers a gripping mystery set against the backdrop of a luxury Manhattan tower. The discovery of four murdered individuals in the penthouse immediately throws Detective "Diamond" Mike Vogel into a complex and dangerous investigation. The victims' connection to a disgraced billionaire and pedophile adds a layer of darkness to the case, hinting at a web of secrets and potential cover-ups. The vanishing witness further complicates matters, leaving Mike with few leads and a growing sense of urgency.

Goldsmith effectively combines elements of a classic whodunit with a police procedural, creating a fast-paced and suspenseful narrative. Mike's personal struggles, particularly his estrangement from his son, add depth to his character and provide a welcome counterpoint to the grimness of the investigation. The pursuit by Talon, a shadowy private intelligence company, introduces a conspiracy element that raises the stakes. The search for the sex tapes of powerful men, while intriguing, at times felt a little like a MacGuffin, perhaps overshadowing the more compelling aspects of the story.

Even so, The Spire is a compelling thriller that keeps the reader guessing until the very end. Goldsmith skillfully weaves together the various plot threads, creating a complex and satisfying mystery. Mike's determination to find the killer, even as he grapples with his own demons, makes him a compelling protagonist. The blend of suspense, intrigue, and personal drama makes The Spire a captivating read for fans of the genre.

Set against the backdrop of Manhattan’s fast-paced, high-stakes world, this murder mystery is an absolute page-turner. From the very first chapter, the author masterfully builds a story filled with crime, corruption, and moral dilemmas while delivering razor-sharp dialogue that makes you feel like you're in the middle of a high-intensity police investigation.
The protagonist, Vogel, is a force to be reckoned with. His dedication to solving cases is unmatched, but what truly makes him compelling is the inner turmoil he battles while trying to reconnect with his child. The chief of detectives is another standout character as his struggle to balance bureaucratic and political pressures while doing what’s best for his precinct adds a realistic and relatable layer to the story.
If you love detective novels or crime TV series, you’ll absolutely enjoy the dynamic exchanges between characters. The fast-paced, no-nonsense law enforcement dialogue keeps things moving, making every conversation feel intense and meaningful. Pay attention to the subtext, there’s a lot going on beneath the surface, from power struggles to hidden agendas.
The novel expertly weaves together themes of crime, politics, deception, and survival, keeping you on edge as characters manipulate situations for their own benefit. The pacing is spot-on, fast and gripping during action scenes, then slowing down just enough for moments of reflection, heightening the suspense. And don’t forget to keep an eye on the shadowy figures lurking in the background; there are plenty of “I knew it!” moments along with surprises that make the journey even more engaging.
The author’s writing is sharp, immersive, and perfectly balanced to deliver a thrilling and satisfying read. Highly recommended for fans of suspenseful, thought-provoking detective stories!

Excellent!

This book left me in suspense for days after finishing it. From page one, it pulls you in with a chilling multiple murder in the heart of New York, and from there, the tension never lets up. The concept of adult tapes as a trigger for violence is a bold and unsettling hook, forcing you to think about the hidden depths of power, corruption, and exploitation.
While Detective Mike carries some familiar detective clichés, his internal struggles and search for redemption make him incredibly compelling. He’s not just chasing a killer, he’s fighting his own demons, which gives the story a deeply human element. His emotional depth makes him easy to connect with, making you root for him despite his flaws.
The book also delivers a strong dose of social commentary. While many thrillers touch on sensitive topics like pedophilia and exploitation, few do so with the same level of depth and conviction. The author doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of these issues, and rather than sensationalizing them, the story firmly condemns them. This aspect adds another layer of intensity and made the book even more gripping for me.
The Spire is an intense and thought-provoking thriller. If you're looking for a deep, complex mystery with conspiracy elements and a tormented protagonist, this book is an excellent choice.

The author created flawed yet likable characters whose seedy behavior is simultaneously heroic and immoral. This contradiction, displayed by the protagonist and antagonist, makes the book remarkable. I enjoyed reading about these characters because they felt real, and their conflicts of morality were captivating.

The story begs the question, is murder justified when the victims have done unspeakable crimes to the murderer and hundreds of others? This theme of revenge justifying the crime is compelling and keeps the reader conflicted about whether the accused should be punished. In the end, the reader is left to determine their version of justice and whether or not they agree with the conclusion.

While the theme of morality and revenge keeps the reader conflicted, the plot keeps them guessing as Mike Vogel’s detective work gets closer and closer to solving the crime. My favorite scene was when they pursued the suspect as he attempted to flee New York City by car. The chase involved several police tactics as the suspect wound through the city streets, narrowly escaping right under their noses.

If you love a good detective story, this one will keep you engaged and challenge your views on right versus wrong. This fast-paced story will get your heart pumping and your mind reeling.

Great book!

This book does an incredible job of using New York as more than just a setting, it becomes an essential part of the story. The contrast between luxury and corruption, exclusivity and crime, creates the perfect atmosphere for a gripping thriller. The author’s vivid descriptions make it easy to immerse yourself in the world of high-stakes investigations and hidden secrets.
Detective Mike’s views on authority and the world, shaped by his own experiences, make him relentless in his pursuit of the truth. He’s not just another detective but he’s someone willing to push boundaries to uncover what others want to keep hidden, which keeps the tension high throughout the book.
One unique touch that stood out was the way each chapter begins with a number, a date, or even a seemingly random fact. Sometimes they’re directly tied to the story, like timestamps on an investigation, while other times they offer intriguing police-related insights. This added a fresh and engaging element to the reading experience.
This was my first time reading a book by Shaun Goldsmith and I was impressed by the writing style and the way every aspect of the book was carefully developed. If you love thrillers packed with mystery, twists, and a richly detailed setting, this is a fantastic pick.

Shaun Goldsmith’s The Spire is a police procedural, a thriller, and a mystery. Combining these story techniques is an amazing talent. But Goldsmith does not stop there. He draws realistic connections to events in the real world. Readers will think about important social issues while keeping them on the edge of their seats.

Detective Mike Vogel is the heart of the story. He is relentless and hardworking but deeply flawed. His struggles with guilt and the need for redemption make him a relatable character.

The story pulls readers in with its tight pacing. Each chapter builds more tension, making it hard to stop reading. Goldsmith also brings New York City to life, showing its many sides. His writing skill portrays the city more as a character than a location.

The dialogue feels natural and is full of energy, helping readers feel the intensity of the investigations. The mix of action and quieter moments is well done. The story builds a rhythm that keeps readers engaged while building suspense.

The ending might feel unsatisfying to readers who prefer a clear resolution. The book includes sensitive topics like pedophilia and exploitation, which may be difficult for some readers.

The Spire is a great pick for fans of detective stories packed with suspense. It delivers a thrilling, thoughtful experience. Suspenseful and thrilling with twists that will leave you guessing.

The Spire is the kind of thriller that pulls you in and doesn’t let go. From page one, I was hooked on the gritty, no-nonsense detective Mike Vogel, a guy who’s seen too much and carries it all like a weighted vest. He’s flawed, stubborn, and sometimes his own worst enemy but that’s exactly what makes him so compelling.

The plot is a rollercoaster: high-profile murders in a sleek Manhattan tower, shady intelligence companies pulling the strings, and secrets so dangerous they could take down the most powerful people in the world. The tension builds with every chapter, and just when you think you’ve got it figured out, Goldsmith throws another curveball.

What really stood out to me was the atmosphere, New York feels alive in this book, from its luxury high-rises to its darker, grittier corners. And beyond the action, there’s real depth. The moral ambiguity keeps you guessing, and the stakes feel painfully real.

If you love fast-paced thrillers with sharp writing, complex characters, and a plot that keeps your brain buzzing long after you’ve put the book down, The Spire is a must-read. Highly recommend for fans of crime fiction that hits hard and doesn’t let up.

Shaun Goldsmith’s The Spire is an enthralling blend of mystery and real-life events, masterfully weaving together themes of corruption, power, and institutional betrayal. Goldsmith’s writing is immersive, rich with vivid imagery and unexpected twists that kept me eagerly turning the pages.

One of the novel’s most compelling aspects is the character of Mike Vogel. His presence within the police force offers a refreshing departure from the stereotypical detective figure. His struggle against authority and the internal politics of law enforcement make for a thought-provoking and multi-layered narrative. Vogel’s character is complex, flawed, and utterly engaging, adding depth to the novel’s exploration of institutional decay.

With its well-developed characters, gripping storyline, and suspenseful pacing, The Spire is a standout read. Goldsmith’s sharp and evocative prose pulls the reader deep into the story’s unfolding drama, making it impossible to put down. The Spire by Shaun Goldsmith follows "Diamond" Mike Vogel as he investigates a bizarre case which happened in the penthouse of the Spire building in Manhattan. The case quickly begins to spin out of control as Mike finds that the victims are all connected to a disgraced billionaire who was famous for his illegal antics behind closed doors. The only witness Mike could find has vanished soon after the case opened, and the only other leads Mike can come up with are tapes which may incriminate many other wealthy individuals. All the while, a seedy organization known as Talon has been hounding Mike every step of the way. Are they trying to help, or are they trying to cover someone's tracks? There are so many parallels between this story and the world we live in. Wild parties that end in violence, the wealthy doing things others would get arrested for, and the truth finally coming to light in the most horrible way possible. A Must-Read Crime Thriller

Some murder mysteries grip you, some keep you guessing, but only a few make you feel like you’re right there watching the scenes unfold like a perfectly crafted movie. This novel does exactly that.
The tension builds with each turn of the page, as the only witness to the crime wrestles with the burden of what they know. But the real heart of the story lies in the struggles of Diamond, the protagonist, who faces an agonizing dilemma of fighting for justice against four individuals responsible for immense harm while staying true to his own moral code.
The stakes are high, and Diamond’s internal battle is just as intense as the mystery itself. His personal demons, his painful past, and his relentless pursuit of what’s right make him an incredibly human character. He’s flawed, conflicted, and all the more compelling because of it.
If you love detective stories, if you crave a mystery with depth, and if you appreciate characters who feel intensely real, this book is an absolute must-read.

Goldsmith’s tale of mystery, suspense, and betrayal is a true gem. The book was nearly impossible to put down due to the fast pace and small pieces of the mystery falling into place in each chapter.

The characters are fleshed out very well, and readers find themselves with as much distrust of other characters as Mike does. Goldsmith utilizes real events and people to assist with storytelling and world building, giving this book a special charm. It seems that a lot of historical research was done to accurately cover the events and locations featured in the story.

Furthermore, the twists and turns in the story fit together nicely and are very realistic. Nothing is as it seems, so it is safe to say that the book leaves the reader wondering with each turn of the page. Goldsmith’s genius plotting makes this book an ideal read for lovers of mystery, crime, and suspense.

The murder of four high profile individuals force our protagonist, a high ranking NYPD detective, to collect clues from high rise buildings to dark alleys with the killer always a step ahead. Ultimately the truth gets revealed in it's ugliest form, forcing the detective into a corner to make some difficult decisions- who is the actual victim here and what should he do to ensure the justice is served.

The book proceeds at a leisurely pace, throwing the readers into the midst of actions, giving detailed accounts of settings and chracters to provide a cinematic experience. I also enjoyed learning about the psychology of a NYPDdetective, on how they unravel clues and find significant information from seemingly insignificant objects. Overall the book is absorbing and engaging.
