A cosy paranormal mystery book. I enjoyed the idea of this book, but I initially found it hard to really become engrossed in the story, maybe just due to all the world building required for this storyline. Luckily I kept reading, as about 60% of the way through I was sucked in & wanted to find out who or what was causing all the misfortune happening in the small town they were posted to. Initially I wasn’t sure who was causing the accidents, but I was very happy when I was able to puzzle it out, with clues within the writing! At times I found the wording quite repetitive, just due to the continuous reuse of the phrases about all the pressure on Grissel’s shoulders as the team lead, & the sorrow at the loss of Ryan’s memories at the end of the case. I really liked the idea of a team of paranormals working together to hunt down paranormal objects let loose into human society & wreaking havoc there, & I think that portion of the story was really well fleshed out & explained, especially the introduction of the team & their dynamic with each other. While the idea of Grissel’s family drama was touched upon at several points during the book, it felt like it wasn’t explored as fully as it could have been, so maybe that will be explored in future books? I also think that Grissel’s ability to see ghosts wasn’t explored very fully, but again, maybe for future books?
Vampires, magical artifacts, and family drama? This book was bloody brilliant—it sucked me in from the first page! If you’re after a cozy mystery with supernatural charm, witty humor, fantastic characters, and a side of magical mayhem, then “Up in Fangs” is the perfect paranormal escape to sink your teeth into next.
Up in Fangs takes place in a hidden community where mundane life blends seamlessly with paranormal residents. Grissel Wells, a vampire who secretly communicates with the dead and works for a classified Paranormal Artifact Retrieval Team, is on a mission to retrieve a powerful artifact that has been brought into the human world and linked to multiple tragedies. If the artifact remains loose, it could endanger innocent people and reveal the hidden supernatural world to humans. The team, led by Grissel, must jump into the investigation, recover the missing artifact, and identify who is using it before everything spirals out of control. To pull this off, Grissel has to corral the multifaceted, eccentric, magical teammates, dodge a local detective, manage an attitude-heavy, snarky familiar, and somehow handle an infuriatingly persistent FBI agent who keeps crossing her path.
What Made This Read So Fang-tastic: The world-building strikes the perfect balance between cozy comfort and captivating mystery. Beverly A. Rearick creates a fantastic paranormal world that feels both magical and intriguing. She had made supernatural creatures and magical artifacts feel like an everyday part of life. Reading this story, I had strong Warehouse 13 meets MIB vibes (but with vampires, witches, and werewolves rather than aliens lol), and all in the best ways. Grissel Wells is a delight to follow; she is a witty and grounded protagonist with relatable flaws amid the magical chaos. Her sharp dialogue, situational humor, and genuine heart make her lovable, despite being an undead vampire. Her human personal life contrasts perfectly with her chaotic existence. Beyond the magical mayhem, she faces pressure from her father about her career, a very pregnant sister, and a stepmother who dropped a bombshell at dinner. These struggles make her wonderfully human. The supporting characters are as entertaining as the mystery. The Paranormal Artifact Retrieval Team resembles a dysfunctional family that accomplishes the impossible despite constant bickering and annoyance. The quirky townspeople, a sassy familiar, and FBI Agent Ryan Stewart add humor, tension, and charm that elevate every scene. The mystery is cleverly plotted, playing out like a supernatural race against time. The brisk pacing moves quickly from one chaotic mishap to the next, filled with magical complications and layered clues and twists that kept me guessing until the end. The finale delivers an exciting, satisfying payoff while leaving enough threads to make Book #2, Fang & Order, feel essential.
Up in Fangs is everything I hope for in a paranormal cozy mystery. It effortlessly combines supernatural adventure, laugh-out-loud humor, memorable characters, heartfelt family dynamics, and a genuinely engaging whodunit into one irresistibly entertaining package.
Just finished this book. Grissel is a member of a secret organization that works very silently to find and apprehend all objects of magic that cause havoc. There is much to do to make retrieval of these artifacts quick as possible so they do not cause any further harm. They cannot let anyone know who they really are and what they are really doing because the human world would not understand or believe any if it. Check out this book and see what Grissel and her team have to do to save her Boss after he was Infected by an artifact. Happy reading.
I enjoy the twist on this paranormal mystery. No murderer to be found. But an ancient magical artifact. The variety of paranormals that made up the team of investigators is great. A little of all paranormal beings. I laughed and cried with the characters. A very great read. On to the next book
A fun read. I like the world it is set in. The mystery is about searching for a cursed artifact causing harm to people. I like the characters , including a cat ghost. There is a mixture of the paranormal and human worlds. I look forward to reading more of this series.
Great entry into a new to me series that mixes mystery with the paranormal and has dashes of staying secret from the human world. Enjoyed the mix of paranormals on the team and also the elements of found family and making your own way.
This is the first book I've read by Ms. Rearick and I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters came to life and the mystery was well written. I'm looking for many more adventures with Brussels and her team..
This first book in Up In Fangs kept me enthralled to the end. Love meeting this new circle of characters who race to find dangerous and crippling artifacts. Love the possibility of romance between Grissy and Ryan. Read on!!
Grissel is a part of the paranormal recovery team the scoops up dangerous artifacts that could harm both the human world and the paranormal world. This is a fast paced book and kept me very interested!
