Ternion of Tarr

Rate this book
“Tasty, innocent soul,” it says in a voice so deep, dark, and malevolent, it drives a shudder up my spine. The words seem to come from the ground itself, rising like fire, licking at me with grotesque rapture.

The price is six souls in three nights.

Imprisoned for a crime she did not commit, Rill Narin carries a lethal secret—she is a Tangler. Temporarily inhabiting other bodies is illegal magic, but a slice of life on the outside is sweet relief from the brutality of prison. Until Rill tangles with the Earl of Tarr’s daughter and witnesses a demonic murder.

Thrown into a whirlwind of danger and intrigue, Rill forms an uneasy alliance with the steely Constable Sabella Rivers and privileged Lady Keeva Dalton. United by circumstances more perilous than their differences, they embark on a frantic race against time to unmask a hellish murderer.

With shadowy secrets lurking in every corner, can the ternion discover the hidden forces at play and unveil the truth before the price is paid?

Thanks to NetGalley and the Editor. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

I'll probably be back to write a longer review later on, but at the moment I just need to write down some thoughts about this one.
I enjoyed this one more than I thought. I mean, obviously, I was hoping to enjoy it and I was intrigued by it, or I wouldn't have requested it. But from the first page, I was completely drawn into the story, and I had a great time all along.
I enjoyed the characters, Rill was my favorite, but I liked all the others, and the story was intriguing and perfectly paced.
I enjoyed the magic in there, especially Rill's, and I would have loved to have seen more of it around. I think that my main complaint with this book is that there wasn't enough magic in it. But it is a minor one because there are reasons for it (but still, a bit more wouldn't have hurt) and because the book is pretty beautiful all the same.
Another thing that I wanted to see more of was Rill's training. But I think this is just because I love school setting and training scenes, and I may be biased. But I think they would have worked so well in there!
But again, I get why we don't get them because the story is progressing fast, especially because there is a killer on the loose, and he kills with the help of a demon, so they have to stop the killing and they need to do it ASAP.
We have a mystery, we have intrigues, twists, and politics. We have a bit of everything, really, and I really enjoyed the time I spent with it!

Ternion of Tarr is a brand new world that is full of magic, mystery and adventure. It was riveting from the get go, the pace is great and keeps you on your toes. There are three female POVs that we get to experience, they all have a very distinctive voice and I loved them all. There’s even an amazing animal companion. The magic system is original and I can tell this is only the beginning with so much more to come. I like finishing a book and wanting to know more about the world and the magic. I love how dark some of the scenes are, definitely lives up to dark fantasy in that respect, expect some gore. Another aspect I really enjoy is the exploration of society, class and feminism. If you like strong female characters, murder mystery, demons and magic then this book is a must read. Thank you to Booksirens and the author for an ARC. This is a voluntary review of my own thoughts.

"Courage is not the absence of doubt, but action despite it."

Ternion of Tarr is a fantasy book with a hint of mystery that works so well together. There is a lot of worldbuilding, Bethany Arliss is very detailed, but it is easy to understand and follow. The magic system is also unique and honestly one of my favorite parts.

The story is told from multiple POVs. Three strong women, Rill, Sabella, and Keeva. While they are all very different, we get to see their relationships grow from dislike, to respect, and ending in an unexpected friendship.

This is truly a fantasy book. There is no spice, but that doesn't even matter because I was entertained without it. By the time we were halfway through the book, I was invested.

I thought the idea of a demon and summoner was interesting, definitely something I've never read before, but I want more of. Plus, who doesn't love flying companions, aka Pegasus!!

Perfect if you like:
⚜️ Secrets and Betrayal
⚜️ Reluctant hero
⚜️ Unlikely friendship
⚜️ Whodunnit
⚜️ Demon/Demon summoner
⚜️ Pegasus

Ternion of Tarr is a wonderfully written novel and the perfect blend of fantasy, magic, and mystery. It has everything that makes a fantasy great, with fantastic world-building and solid characters who come together in an unexpected yet wonderful way!

Rill Narin is imprisoned in Lapana Prison for a crime she did not commit. She was caught while searching for her missing sister and accused of theft. Rill has been in prison and hiding a secret that can cost her her life. She is a tangler and can inhabit someone's body with just a touch. This type of magic is not only dangerous but illegal. One day, Lady Keeva Dalton, the Earl's daughter who usually visits the prison, touches Rill and as hard as Rill tries to fight the temptation of tangling, she cannot. She tangles with Keeva while she was at a dance and witnesses a murder. This murder is not just any murder- it is a demon killing. The sorcerer of this demon spots Keeva and Rill rushes her to safety in her home village of Ikra. Seeking help for Keeva and a way out of prison, Rill connects with Keeva's guard, Sabella. Sabella agrees, but now Rill has to become her fledge guard. Brutal murders start happening in Lapana, murders that can only be described as demonic. The ladies soon find out this demon is set to collect 6 souls in 3 days, and now they are on a race to find the sorcerer and stop him from stealing souls.

This book is such a compelling book and drew me in from the very first page! It is well-written and steadily paced, with wonderful world-building. The characters are so different, especially Rill, Keeva, and Sabella. Rill is in a completely new world, different from what she has ever known due to socioeconomic divisions. She is tasked with not only saving lives, but also understanding and controlling her power, which she tried so hard to suppress for most of her life. This book is a great book and touches on so many important topics- hate, prejudice, strength, courage, the power of friendship, and self-acceptance. By the end of the book, the 3 women learn a lot about themselves, and their character development can not be denied!

"Courage is not the absence of doubt, but action despite it."

4.5 stars!

Thank you NetGalley, BooksGoSocial, and Bethany Arliss for such a wonderful ARC!

Intrigued after the first four sentences and completely hooked by the end of Chapter 2. I couldn’t put this book down! This story starts at pace and doesn’t let up, with well-timed reveals and superbly crafted narration that hides clues in plain sight. I loved this book.
Told through the eyes of not one, but THREE epic women, Ternion of Tarr is a wonderful mix of fantasy and mystery. The characters have complexity and the world building is awesome. I just want more!
I really enjoyed the Shadow Fractures Trilogy and was worried the Simgra Series might not live up to the expectations I had following that… I didn’t need to worry. Bethany Arliss is exceptional and I can’t wait to read whatever comes next!

Ternion of Tarr by Bethany Arliss was a delight to delve into. The fusion of fantasy and the 'Who Did It?' detective narrative was a refreshing twist. The tale unfolds in a captivating gaslamp fantasy realm, complete with a thrilling magic system that adds a unique flavor to the story.

Bethany masterfully weaves in complex themes of oppression, rebellion, grief, rage, and trauma healing, enriching the narrative with depth and intrigue. The characters' personal journeys are compelling, keeping me engrossed and eager to uncover the mastermind behind the unfolding events.

The story is told from multiple POVs, a personal favorite of mine. We see the world through the eyes of three main female characters, each bringing something unique to the plot. They all possess distinctive voices and distinctive views of the world.

Rill, a girl from a place where magic is banished to its population, is thrown into a world of intrigue and danger and finds herself imprisoned for a crime she didn't commit. She has a secret - she is a Tangler, someone who can infiltrate others' minds by touch, an offense punishable by death.

Constable Sabella Rivers is an officer and a woman of honor and duty. She is a true friend who will do anything for those she loves.

Keeva is a seemingly privileged and spoiled heiress, Sabella's friend, and a woman of great intelligence and bright mind. She sees and understands how the world around her functions and tries to make it a better place.

Together, those three unlikely allies and friends, with the help of some other genuinely remarkable side characters, will embark on a voyage to try and solve a series of murders caused by a demon summoner.

Ternion of Tarr is a masterfully crafted tale of fantasy, mystery, intrigue, and betrayal. But beyond that, it's a testament to the power of friendship that transcends boundaries. It's a narrative about self-healing and healing others, about striving to make the world a better place. I'm eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this captivating journey.

You will love Ternion of Tarr if you enjoy
- a gaslamp fantasy setting
- fantasy meets detective stories
- intricate world-building
- interesting magic system
- female friendship
- reluctant heroes
- betrayal and intrigues
- unlikely friendships
- Demons and demon summoners
- Pegasi

Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was excellent. I was riveted from the beginning, the plot picks up very quickly and the reader is just thrown in with very little hand-holding. This book is sink or swim.

Characters (of which all POVs are female) are engaging and realistic. I wasn’t as much of a fan of Keeva as I was Rill and Sabella but all three were good narrators for their sections. Supporting characters were interesting, I especially liked Tavell who struck me as a character I would normally hate early on in the book, but who did a complete 180 in my opinion for no real reason other than being awesome.

Chapters were short too, which I like immensely. One complaint, however, was that the “class five” and “level five” witches were talked about but not really explained (unless I blinked and missed it). Also I could have enjoyed more magic being used over all. I don’t really understand how someone can be an elemental magic user as well as a tangler/truthsayer etc.

This book was also excellently written. The dialogue and descriptions were easy to imagine but the story wasn’t bogged down by flowery language. All too frequently recently I find myself in a slog to get through the middle section of a book and I didn’t feel that way at all reading this book. I am thoroughly looking forward to book 2.

Ternion of Tarr follows the adventure of three women trying to find the demon summoner that is collecting six souls in three nights. Full of tension and action, it's an exciting read that lets the reader dive into a vivid world of fantasy and mystery.

Rill, Sabella and Keeva are all strong female characters in their own way that is realistic with some dynamic character development at the end. With multiple POVs, you gain so much insight on what each person is going through, where you can't help but cheer each one of them on. The action is tense and fast paced with some surprisingly visceral descriptions of the crime scene (which is nice in a deranged way?). I did expect a more in-depth magic system, but it doesn't hinder the story and there is magic used indirectly like wards and unlocking spells.

I received an ARC of this book from BookGoSocial and NetGalley, and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Ternion of Tarr is a mixture of fantasy, mystery and a hint of darkness.
This is not my usual go to genre, but I was captivated from the start, and kept intrigued by the many different topics explored throughout.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good this book was! One part fantasy, one part murder mystery, 100% fun. Multi POV, great character & world building, interesting magic system, a smidge of love interest. I love that it had a nice round ending that tapered into what comes next. No cliffhanger. I look forward to reading more from this series!

Ok so this story had a slow start that I had a difficult time getting through the beginning… but once the story started building I found it exciting and a lot of fun.
The story follows three separate characters while they solve the mystery of a bunch of demon killings…. One is a prisoner, a princess and a cop essentially
The imagery in this story is fantastic… and the twists were not overly predictable!

Thank you for the ARC Bethany Arliss definitely worth the read!

First of all, I want to say thank you to NetGalley and Bethany Arliss for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

3.8/5⭐
Well, I could say that Bethany Arliss's Ternion of Tarr is an enthralling blend of fantasy, magic and mystery. The novel introduces a unique magic system and follows Rill Narin, whose life is thrown into chaos.
The world-building is immersive without overwhelming the reader with info-dumping at the beginning of the story, I liked the fact that the details were revealed naturally throughout the story. The character dynamics are particularly engaging, oh how I adored the interactions between the three main characters! Also, I think the pacing is perfect, making it an easy and captivating read for me.

CW: some violence, gore

Thank you so much to the author for allowing me to be a part of the ARC team! “Ternion of Tarr” releases June 4, 2024!

Confession time— I knew this one was going to be good going into it. Bethany Arliss was one of the very first authors that I ever ARC read for independently, almost exactly one year ago when she was releasing the final installment of the “Shadow Fractures” trilogy (which you should totally read). I loved that series, so I knew when she announced the launch of this first title in the “Simgra” series that I was going to love it, too (I was correct).

Imprisoned for a crime she didn’t commit, Rill Narin has a secret. A magical secret that could get her killed. When she uses her power to take a joy ride in the body of Lady Keeva Dalton, daughter of the Earl of Tarr, Rill witnesses a horrific murder. Desperate to aid her friend Keeva, Constable Sabella Rivers risks her career on Rill’s word. Now, the women, linked by a tenuous trust, are running out of time to stop a demon that demands 6 souls in 3 days.

Just in case my confession and my 5-star rating didn’t give it away, this book was amazing. The story is told using 3 points of view— Rill, Sabella, and Keeva. The three couldn’t be more different from each other, but all are strong, fierce individuals. We see a lot more into Rill’s state of mind, but that’s most likely because we find her at the most emotionally fragile place of all of them. The poor girl’s been in jail, forced to hide her magic, and suddenly finds herself in *circumstances.* It’s been rough. While I enjoyed seeing all 3 POV, I did find that Keeva’s were my least favorite, but I think a lot of that has to do with her particular circumstances for a large portion of the book. I did enjoy all 3, though, so this isn’t to say that her scenes were at all bad or boring, just different.

The world building was lovely, and it provided a wonderful backdrop to a plot-oriented storyline. Descriptive enough to make you feel like you were there with our characters, but subtle enough to not overwhelm or info dump. The world itself is a really interesting blend of what I would call ‘real world comforts’ and ‘typical fantasy vibes,’ and that combination is one of my favorite types of setting. The magic itself is so, so interesting to me, and I can’t wait to see even more of it in future installments. Also, there’s a pegasus, and she is, hands down, my favorite character. I will accept no arguments.

All of these wonderful characters and this incredible magical world would be absolutely lost, though, without the plot. It’s a demon-summoning murder mystery, but wrapped up in the makings of a much larger magical power struggle. It was engaging and entertaining the whole way through, and I found it incredibly difficult to put down. It feels like the perfect length, and the pacing is wonderful. The writing style is straightforward and easy to read without sacrificing flow or narrative strength. In short, it’s everything I want in a story like this.

As I said before, I knew I was going to love this one, and I did. I loved the author’s first series, and I think this one far surpasses it. It’s got a witchy, elemental magic set in a solid fantasy world full of interesting creatures and all sorts of people. It has 3 amazing heroines, all of whom are enjoyable and flawed and feel like the sort of people you might want to be friends with. Also, that whole ‘it has a pegasus’ thing I mentioned. I’m not kidding, she’s the best. If any of those types of things appeal to you, or if you just want to read a really good book, then this is definitely one you need to check out.

First, thank you Bethany Arliss for allowing me to read your wonderful book as an ARC reader. I truly enjoyed this book from beginning to end.

Rill Narin is in prison for a crime she didn’t commit but she has a secret that can cost her, her life..she is a tangler. The ability to temporarily inhabit another persons body is illegal magic. And can only happen once a person touches her. So when Lady Keeva, the Earl of Tarrs daughter visits and happens touch her, the call to tangle with her is just too tempting. A night of the high life, but instead she witnesses a demonic murder.

Check out this amazing story of danger, magic, and intrigue. Even with their different cultures and social standings, there is a group of unlikely alliances that is formed as they do everything they can to find out who summoned the demon and why. The problem?

The price is six souls in three nights. The demon must consume 2 souls a night for three nights for the summoner to get the favor he has requested.

In a race to find out who it is and how to stop them, this group of unlikely friends do everything they can, but they face so many twist and turns a long the way.

It is such a great book. I was able to figure it out before some things were revealed, but still I can’t wait for the second book!

If you like action and adventure, magic powers and levels of magic, a scrappy and tenacious FMC, and little to no spice, this book should join your TBR. This book follows not 1 but 3 strong FMCs from different backgrounds and different life status. Each being pulled together by a murder via summoned demon, Rill, Keeva and Sabella find that they need each other to stop these murders and find the summoner.

As they navigate the short timeline this book spans over, there may be more secrets for our trio to uncover, while also learning some things about themselves.

While I found the start of the book to have a bit of a stop and go action pace, it did set the foundation for a strong second half of this story. I found that having 3 POVs in this story gave a different narrative to perspectives of story, and each character held their own characteristic that would normally be found in a sole FMC.

This was very much a girls girl type of book, with showing women empowering and strengthening other women. It was nice to see them portrayed in strong characters. I would recommend this to anyone who loves following a fun adventure, with some interesting magic elements involved.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book! The book is told through the viewpoints of our three main leads-- Rill, Keeva and Sabella. I generally don't love stories told in the first person POV, but the multiple viewpoints gave me a change to really get to know our leading trio. Although the three women couldn't be more different, they are all strong, likeable characters. I can't wait to see how far these three can go, and would love to see how their powers and friendship grow. Strong women support women! Plus, a satisfying HEA and a nicely wrapped up mystery.

The world was beautifully crafted and with a believable(!) magic system. The book quickly caught and kept my attention--I was 100% invested in this book (I am currently writing this review on my lunch break because I could not wait until I finished work to finish the story). I look forward to exploring more of the world of of Simgra-- it sounds like we're going to Fauster next....

Thank you to Goodreads, Bethany Arliss and Shaliam Publishing for an ARC of this book!

At a few false starts (first person POV does not always work for me), I very much enjoyed this story! The story definitely benefits from having POV chapters for the three main characters, Rill, Sabella, and Keeva. Through magical circumstances, these three women must solve a chain of demonic murders that occur over three nights. It was important to me (and I believe to the narration in general) to get separate viewpoints from these three to move the story along and keep me invested, as each character has a different connection to the murders. Their individual growth throughout the novel was refreshing, even though it was a bit predictable. The ending and big reveal is nicely done, though not unforeseen if you read a lot of fantasy novels.

Overall, I think this was a great opening novel for Arliss' new Simgra Series, and I am looking forward to reading the next tale!

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this novel!

Potential spoiler within the review (not major - not who did it don't worry !! More a slight plotline)

Just to preface:
I've never heard anyone outside of Ireland with my name, never mind in a book (same spelling and all: Keeva) - it was surreal reading it for the first half of the book but it was so cool !! 👀

I love the journey with Rill in her back and forth thoughts on whether she wants to be a guard or not.

I love the descriptions of scents when magic is used (cinnamon, sulphur, sage etc) it's beautiful. ✨

The way that Bethany has written this book is just breathtaking and kept me intrigued and wanting to read more.

There were some dodgy characters indeed, some got justice, some didn't.

The character and world building in this book was stellar ! As Bethany knew, I never read a proper Fantasy book before. But I'm so so glad she gave me the chance to read this before it's release. Wow. What a stunning book !! 🩷

This was such a treat to read. If you love fantasy books with that classic reluctant hero, then this is perfect for you. There's a little romance as well as mystery in the mix, which adds a little something for everyone. I honestly think this new series will put Bethany Arliss on the map as an expert fantasy author.

Genre: Fantasy Fiction

Tropes: Reluctant Hero, Magic, Who Dun It, Magical Creatures, Royal Intrigue, Forbidden Magic

Things I liked: All the characters were amazing, Rill, Sabella, and Keeva were such strong women who really drove the story. Bethany switched between the three POV'S expertly, making sure we were at the right place at the right time.
The magic in this world is amazing. I would love to read a whole book about myths and legends of this world. Bethany's world building skills are legendary at this point.

Things I disliked: I need to read the next book now! Waiting for the next book is going to be torture, but it will be worth the wait since I know the care she puts into writing her books.

Audiobook or Physical? The ebook was really good, I loved the font choices for the names as the perspectives shifted between the characters.

Extras: 3 POV's (Rill, Sabella and Keeva), Indie Author

Ternion of Tarr was a really solid book! I’ll always eat up a fantasy/murder mystery combo, as it’s my favorite genres wrapped into one. I enjoyed the world building and magic system. I thought the magic was done in an interesting way. I do hope we get to dive a little more into the magic class system and how it works in the next book, and I’m guessing that’s going to be the case based on who the next book seems to be focused on.

I really liked the characters. The women in this book were strong, each in their own way, and they all grew to appreciate one another for that strength.

I look forward to the next book!

This took me a minute to get into, but the more I read the more invested I became. I didn't want to put it down, and was disappointed when it ended.

The story is told from three viewpoints, all women with different upbringings and differing outlooks on life, but who come together at just the right time. I liked all three, and enjoyed reading from each perspective.

This is a fantasy novel (it's not a romance in any way) with magic and demons, and a mystery the main characters are trying to solve. I tried to figure out who was pulling the strings, but I liked that I couldn't!

Now I just need to patiently (ha!) wait for the next book!

I really enjoyed this book! It’s definitely different to what I usually read but I found myself pleasantly surprised. I really like the way that Bethany Arliss writes and how she manages to captivate you within the first few chapters. The characters were also well written, I loved seeing their growth and the development of true friendship. The magic system was also really interesting, I’m excited to find out more about the different kinds of magic in the next books in the series. The mystery was also really intriguing, I couldn’t put it down once I got to the last 100ish pages because I just needed to find out what happens. The ending definitely didn’t disappoint and I’m excited to see where the storyline goes in the next book!

This was a lovely fantasy-mystery read, with a unique magic system! It is fast paced and well written, and I was hooked in the first few chapters 📖

The short journey the three FMC Rill, Sabella and Keeva embark on is truly spectacular and I like their dynamic!

“Courage is not the absence of doubt, but action despite it.” - Sabella

It has multiple POV, secrets, betrayal, magic, a reluctant hero and demon murders! And there are Pegasus!! 🦄

I need to know more about the magic system and the unique powers, and I would love to follow Rills journey as a fledge 👀

I reviewed this as an ARC.

Found this book really intriguing!

Like a fantasy type murder mystery? I really enjoyed it! Multiple POVs which are my favourite. And the magic system was well described and easy to understand.

The characters were wonderful and Bethany detailed them extremely well so you really got an insight into each of their struggles.

I didnt pick who "the summoner" was 😆 and I like books that aren't too predictable and surprise me!

Also FYI - No spice in this one at all

Ternion of Tarr

I received this as a free ARC. Thank you, Bethany!

Rill: Prisoner. Orphan. Convicted criminal. Tangler. Rill lives in a small hut with her twin sister. After her sister goes missing, and the authorities won’t help her because of where she’s from, she seeks out information on her own. In the process, she’s arrested for theft and thrown in the prison. Normally she hides her magic, but the draw to see outside the prison is to great and she enters the mind of another.

Lady Keeva: the Earl’s daughter. She leads a sheltered life, so she sneaks out of her family’s manor to spend time in a tavern with people who don’t treat her like “delicate gold filigree”. Then, her friend Thorn is killed by a demon and her whole world turns upside down.

Sabella: Constable of the Citizen Guard. Orphan. Chosen by a Pegasus. Sabella must choose her Fledge, her trainee. She’s been searching for the right person until the prisoner tangler takes the choice away with her demands. Can she grow to like her Fledge? Could they even one day be friends?

A man in black has summoned a demon. To receive his favor from the demon, he must provide souls. Having witnessed the first murder, Rill finds herself working along side the Earl’s daughter and the Constable that visit her prison.

I’m not going to give many more details, because I want you to read it. This is great story. It’s filled with some of our favorite things; girl power, found family, magic, and a who-done-it. When I read stories like this, I always try to guess along the way who the criminal is. I’m almost always right and I usually guess who it is within the first 5 chapters. Both of my first two guesses were wrong. lol. That’s my favorite thing about this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and now we wait for Foes of Fauster in 2025.

Another incredible book by Bethany Arliss. With three very different female POVs, an animal companion, and the very original magical system Arliss has created, it was an extremely well written story.

I cannot wait to see what Bethany Arliss brings us next.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an e-arc of this book!

Overall, this was an fun fast paced, mostly plot driven, fantasy that definitely kept me on my toes. The magic system was interesting, based in the elements and giving those who have magic a numbered rank. I wanted more from the worldbuilding in the magic system, but I'm sure it will be built upon in the following books in the series. The characters were lively and I loved the way the three POV characters work together.
