This is a new to me author in a genre I find hit or miss but I’m really glad I took a chance on this one. The book is well written, the storyline is believable. All around good book and I recommend you give it a read.
Loved this book! It's the perfect mix of sweet and spicy for me! Characters are written well, and there is a bit of suspense thrown in. All around, a wonderful book!
Age gap (46H/33h) Friend's Dad Small Town Single Mom/ Single Dad Neighbors
Moves home to take care of her sick elderly grandmother who has cancer. Her friend from high school, that she still talks to, dad lives next door. Insta attraction and cute story.
Be warned there is about a 2 year gap where they are apart, if that isn't your thing. 😊
Overall, I will definitely read other books by this author in the future. 🤓
*There were some errors I found that needed to be corrected, but they didn't take away from the story. (Ashleigh- send me a message if you want the list to correct. 🙂)
Olivia and her teenage son move to a small town in Vermont to take care of her 92 year old grandma. Her new neighbor, Garrett, is her childhood friend’s dad. He’s a grumpy, scowling lumberjack and she’s a happy half-hispanic girl. Woman. She’s 33 when the book starts.
It’s written in first person POV from Olivia and Garrett’s POVs. A few spicy bits.
The characters bugged me. Garrett is nice to Olivia when he helps her get her car unstuck, but then he turns into a jerk when he finds out who she is. Why? Because he’s attracted to her and he shouldn’t be? Because he’s sooooo much older than her? Only 13 years, so it’s not like he’s old enough to be her dad.
And Olivia made choices I didn’t understand. A lot of time was wasted because of her. Also, where was her son throughout the book? He was in maybe two scenes total where he had dialogue, but other than that, he’s just referred to.
Like her son, some scenes were brushed over, which made it so I wasn’t fully immersed in the story. The grammar errors helped pull me out, too, though.
I shouldn’t have picked this book up in the first place. The tags said “age gap” and I’ve never liked those, so I had a feeling I wouldn’t like this book either. It was my fault for reading it anyway, and because of that, maybe I shouldn’t rate it.
I did read this book in one sitting, so it held my interest, at least.
I enjoyed the characters and felt like there was good chemistry between them, however the flow and speed of the book was the biggest issue for me. I felt that some aspects/thoughts etc were overly descriptive while some parts lacked any description at all - all of a sudden 8 months have passed?
The jumps in time aren’t noted in the book well and is to be discerned by the reader, and the MC who barely speaks to FMC suddenly has a dirty mouth worthy of adult movies - it lacked cohesiveness, more like the author struggled to write dialogue that didn’t include a bedroom.
I will also note that the book actually changed tenses early on which is a huge issue for me when reading, so the flow was lacking again.
I rarely write reviews but this book outside of a couple of cute scenes left me annoyed at the skill level with the writing. The character development was there, sure, and I understand us learning about background as characters do, but the lack of flow or throwing in a comment in one of the last chapters to tie up a plot hole that hasn’t been discussed since early on but was a major issue for FMC at the time just reads as bad writing to me.

First of all, the updated cover art is adorable, and I love it. The book was a good blend of sweet and spicy. The story concept was really cute and I enjoyed the characters. There are a few things, however, that could use some work. The pacing didn't flow smoothly. It felt like when you're driving along at a good clip, hit an unexpected speed bump, and go flying forward a bit. When you land, you have to look back and reassess what happened. The math didn't seem to add up for the ages and timeline of a couple of the characters. Also - Grammar/punctuation/sentence structures need editing. So many run on sentences being held together with commas. It kept pulling me out of the story; and several times I had to reread passages to be sure of what was happening. Overall, this story was really cute. I hope the author keeps writing and improving.
Olivia is a single mom to a teenage boy. She is returning to her small hometown in Vermont to care for her ailing grandmother, who took care of Olivia after her parents died. She is facing some personal and social kickback as a single Latina mom. But she finds a friend in the hot neighbor who chops wood every morning. Too bad he’s the dad of one of Olivia’s friends. Will she be able to resist temptation in a small town where everyone talks?
This book was too cute! I love the dynamic between Olivia and Garrett, and the back and forth made their pseudo relationship very relatable. Great characters, good balance of romance and tension, and believable conflict.
Tropes: small town, age gap (33 and 45), single parent, family drama, grumpy lumberjack, past trauma.
This was a really fun quick read! I really enjoyed the plot. I felt like the characters had really great chemistry. For a relatively new author I felt like this book killed it! I couldn’t put it down.
I will note in terms of writing, I felt like every detail in the book had a paragraph or two of description behind it, I found myself skipping multiple paragraphs because I wanted more interaction and background of the characters rather than knowing what every building intricately looked like etc.. I also noticed a lot of repetitive sentences and action or feeling descriptors were used multiple times.
Ok, I genuinely liked this book. Once you get past the few editing and grammatical errors, the story itself was truly endearing. The beginning was a bit tough to get through, as the writing felt a bit juvenile but it got soooo good once she arrived in Pine Crest. As a young Hispanic woman who has dealt with bigotry and racism in my 24 years, I really resonated with Olivia. And Garrett? Hands down, so yummy and his dirty talk was top notch. As a second novel by this author, I was impressed. If you’re someone who can look past the few grammatical errors, I definitely recommend this!
Overall, not typically my genre (more of a mystery/thriller kind of gal) but the story line was cute, and I loved the theme of overcoming racism and a female lead learning and knowing her worth 💕 It was a slow start to get into for me to adjust to the writing style, but once I got about half way through it was pretty quick. I wish there was a little more character development as the timeline jumps a bit, but overall definitely worth the read! A little spice and a lot of love!
Such a good read. Not too much spice through out the book itself, but when the spice is there…IT IS THERE. The praise….them getting their second chance. Ugh…what he did for her with the house!!
I’d love to read more stories around the characters and others mentioned!
I did notice a few editing errors. Mostly just Olivia’s name being misspelled a few times as Oliva.
This was an amazing story of love, triumph over adversity, spicy age gap fun and a small town overcoming its past discrimination. I loved the story of Olivia and Garrett! It had the perfect amount of well-rounded plot and spice! I loved it all! I will definitely be reading more of Wrights’ books! I am so glad I saw her in an online book group and gave the book a chance, because I have found a new favorite author to add to my list.
Such a great book and great descriptive characters, plot storyline, and world building!! I got this as a Beta read and very happy I was able to read as soon as I did because this is already one of my favorite reads of the year!! The spice when it was there really packed a punch and it is definitely a must read!! 4/5 stars :)
3.5⭐️ Super cute quick read with a deep rooted education in prejudice and conclusion-jumping twats. Man, I just respect Olivia for all that she has overcome and I’m so happy with the ending we got. Spicy ✅ Angsty ✅ Grumpy vs sunshine ✅ Garrett is the grumpy golden retriever energy I didn’t know I needed. I’m glad I spent my Sunday afternoon in Vermont with this story.
I love this book. I relate to Olivia so much as myself have been through so much racism and hate just because of what I look like and where my parents come from. Garret is really the sweetest. I hope everyone can find their own version of him. ❤️
This was a very nice story. At times it was difficult to stay emerged in what was happening due to the writing style, but I wanted to continue to see how everything ended. I feel like there was too little that happened and too big of time jumps for realistic character development. However the story itself was still very pleasing.
Came to my kindle after seeing a post on Facebook , I wouldn’t have normally read based on cover doesn’t personally appeal to me (more of a dark romance girly don’t normally go for the cute covers ) but the book was fantastic , well written and just such an easy read , congrats
This was what I’d consider a light story. There was some spice but not heavily focused on it. I enjoyed the age gap and the grumpy lumberjack. I really loved the baking and leaving notes. Really cute light book but also touched on important issues. Would and did recommend to friends :)
By the writer for the names of the main characters, even though she didn't know. Once I was able to get past those, this was a very fast read and the male main character is everything.
This was a cute story that really endears you to the main characters. His grumpy to her sunshine, but with a healthy mix of complex emotions thrown in as well. I enjoyed her sass and his grump!
The books is amazing, the world building and the differnt characters and how they interact is wonderful. I laughed crier and giggled at this book. Love the little twists and turns. Definitely a good read.
Super cute novel. Really easy read. I loved the characters. Age gaps usually aren’t my thing but this one was written really well! Also the spice was written soooooo well!
While the characters and story were cute, the sheer amount of discription with everything was overwhelming. It felt at times like I was reading a high fantasy.
I love a good romance, especially with lumberjacks👀🥵 10/10 would recommend A solid 🌶️🌶️ book (idk everyone has a different scale lol) well written, absolutely love
A great little read, I laughed until I cried and the story was brilliant!!! Definite feel good read for a rainy Sunday afternoon after a busy week, Highly recommend!
