I really have enjoyed this book and series quite a lot and I am really looking forward to the next book in this series. I hope you too will enjoy reading this book and series.
Quote: "We can honor their memories by learning from both their teachings and their mistakes."
This book was very entertaining! The trio add on more interesting folk as they fight code name: extinction. And we get a little more background on Lara’s background and wisdom from Lutch. Can’t wait for the next book to come out!
This was a great follow-on book. I was unexpectedly pulled into this story. It is a very entertaining story, well written, and a few grammatical errors. Lots of action and likable characters. As always with Mr. Chaney a very good novel.
Wonderful continuation of the story! Great action and some excellent plot twists. I look forward to where this is heading. I highly recommend this one.
This, while offering a lot of good shoot-em-up scenes and posing questions to thicken the plot, feels like a middle book. The goal? Get Ned back. The problem? Everyone and everything in the way. Which does prove interesting.
That said, I found myself putting this down and not caring if I got back to it. I was invested, but not that much. I do like the characters of Hank and Lora. I love the way new characters are being woven in. Overall it's a good story.
The narration by Neill Thorne is fantastic. Great use of accents for alien characters. I think it mixes it up even though aliens would never have accents that we have on earth. Suspension of disbelief, people. This is fiction. Fun fiction.
I like the concept of this series, but this second novel in the series did not keep me engaged. A hard working scavenger finds an ancient treasure and embarks on an odyessey to well, I'm still not sure what. There are a few conflicting goals. Maybe ths gets resolved as the story progresses. At the end of this novel the main character has accumulated a diverse set of characters (trope check confirmed) and has identified an unknown threat to all life (trop check confirmed). I hope that I've missed something.
I felt the author did a Great job keeping the story and characters continuing forward from book 1 into book 2. Once again this is a page Turner, listened to it in one day, and already purchased the next in this series. Also again narrator does a Great job with the various characters voices and Storyline.
The worldbuilding is dark with violence, death, fanaticism, and oppression. Part of this story is particularly sad. Libby and Armond add some humor to a rather grim but thrilling story.
This is the book where Hank Spears really takes off on his new career as a Bounty Hunter. His new/old partner, Lara Shen, a.k.a. Kilara Vex, Bounty Hunter is with him and they are trying their best to stay away from Inquisitor John Gregory. That guy is psycho but has the Consortium Government backing him. Gregory is assisted by his Acolyte Imogen Hush which you’ll read about towards the latter part of this book.
But first they have to explore a military space station called “Home”. This place is ran by an AI, a deranged AI, which proves even difficult for Ned. The latter is the major cause of most of Hank’s troubles. He found Ned, a nondescript cube while doing some innocent scrapping. He didn’t actually realize what he had until Ned started spouting off about doing something called finding the true enemy of humanity.
It seems like in the last war, the rebels were the ones who wanted to force humans to become cyborgs with all sorts of computer implantations. Of course not a lot of people liked that idea so various battles were fought between the two factions. The Consortium finally won out but the AI that controlled much of the rebel activity went in to hiding. He also created a super weapon Codename: Extinction. Ned had to find this super weapon before it was used on humanity and he convinced Hank to start working with him/it.
The problem with all this is that any kind of AI is banned in the Consortium. Any contact with an AI is punishable by death or imprisonment until death. Usually punishment was done on-site by the Inquisitors and especially by John Gregory. Fortunately, Hank found Lara just in time and she steered him into the Bounty Hunter profession, but they had to also assist Ned in his tracking down of this super weapon.
They didn’t find a welcoming embrace at “Home”. In fact, while Ned attempted to break into the AI controlling the space station, he suffered a virus attack and was shut down. Now Hank and Lara had to find someone that could descramble Ned and get him back in operation. That was going to be a delicate task since they couldn’t come right out and tell anyone why they needed an expert in computers. But, using Lara’s contacts as Kilara Vex, they were able to locate one Edwin Stern.
Now Edwin is something of a recluse and a little weird. He’s located on his own little asteroid that floats through space just so people can pinpoint his exact location at any given time. He’s also built his asteroid into something of a fortress since he doesn’t exactly like people visiting him. But, Hank and Lara are resourceful and determined. They convince Edwin to work on Ned, but only after Edwin tells them he needs them to do something for him.
That something is described as having a person named Satyn Stern “dealt with”. The definition of “dealt with” was left up to Hank and Lara, but that’s what he wanted in order to debug Ned. And by the way, Hank and Lara have picked up a new crew-person by the name of Alek. Alek used to be the bartender on the planet Bussel where Hank and Lara grew up at an orphanage. I say, used to be, because Hank and Lara had apprehended his former gang boss and turned him in for a bounty. That threw those under that boss out of work and that included Alek.
This new crewman was a Kyrogi, a very large Kyrogi with extremely large hands and feet. He could barely move about the Buzzard, Hank’s starship, but he made for a very good crewman in that he was also a former soldier and a doctor. Hank was going to need his services sometime during this book.
Anyway, back to Edwin and his task for Hank and Lara. It kind of turned deadly, but everyone recovered from this escapade, but there might be a time when they might not. I just so happened that Acolyte Imogen Hush has caught up with Hank and Lara and she has a surprise for them.
This book was very interesting and I can’t wait to read the next. Book 3, “Rebel Intelligence”, is available on Amazon now.
I'm enjoying this series very much thus far. It's fun and fast paced without getting down in the minutia of how their space travel works. My only gripe relates to a couple of very minor details. Literally one in each book so far. (Very minor book details follow)
In the first book Hank is soldering something which is said to create sparks. Soldering electronics does not create sparks unless something has gone terribly wrong. In the second book, Hank drinks from a water container which is kept magnetized to his cockpit chair, then it revealed that the container is aluminum which is not magnetic.
Like I said, these are minor details, but when the fabric of your thought gets snagged by one of these little thorns, it takes a conscious effort to dismiss it and dive back in. Kinda ruins the moment, if that makes sense.
Still, I am enjoying the series, and I'm off to read the next one. Cheers!
Kind of cheesy and conversations all seem forced. There were two prime opportunities to destroy the Inquisitor’s ship while it was parked and empty, but apparently that is not accepted behavior, or they are just idiots.
The series continues in this second book, with increased character and plot development, new characters joining our protagonists, and several intense conflicts along the way. The book ends with a soft push i to the next installment.
For a story to really catch your attention you must feel a part of it and not being able to guess what is coming next. This puts you exactly there. What is the next thing to happen.
Good writing and character development, but a whole book just to add some new teammates.
Good development of new characters but a whole book just to add three new characters. Good action. Good writing; no spelling or grammar problems as is so common today.
Book 2 was good enough for me to continue reading the series. I would still like more science, but I am coming around to the cyber punk space opera character driven storytelling style.
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
This was a second book in the series . The characters growth as people and their place in the universe is well done. The plot line continues to expand.
Lara and crew have moved on. They are pursuing the Evil AI who was critical to the dark forces in the last war. With their own AI they are determined to find him and make him pay.
This series really starts to shine in this installment. it expands the characters and also adds some interesting investigation side plots. plus starts to build relationship bonds. A very good space jaunt.
