I wanted to like this book a lot more than I eventually did. It's about Seiji, one of the many lovely side characters in the Kayashima-series, and I really loved him so I was looking forward to this one. But ultimately this didn't fulfil my expectations at all, so I was disappointed.

The main drawback was that it isn't told from Seiji's POV, but from his (future) lover's. I was looking forward to learning more about Seiji, but considering the whole setup it's probably better that the story wasn't told from his POV, since Seiji's backstory is really fucked up (and the short story from Seiji's POV was bad enough in that regard...). I mean, I wasn't expecting flowers and sparkles considering the first time we meet him in the "Kayashima" books, but the fact that his half-brother has been sexually abusing him for years in one way or other, and in the end that "minor thing" is resolved by Seiji's lover getting into a fist fight with said brother... it's a bit hard to swallow, even for BL standards. Well, what I'm taking from this is that Seiji got his well-deserved happy ending, at least.

(Also, I am willing to make concessions considering this was apparently her first "real" novel - the concessions are only regarding the fact that there wasn't enough build up and resolve - despite all the horrific things that happened to Seiji in the past, things in the present proceed relatively smoothly.)

And on a superficial note, since I realized pretty early I wasn't going to be able to really get into this one, I ended up reading it pretty fast and "lightly", meaning I hardly looked up words and still got the gist of it.
