As a field reporter in the 1960s, Gloria Steinem worked hard to dig up important stories. She went undercover to expose the grim realities of gender inequality in America. As her message continued to grow, she became the spokeswoman of the women’s liberation movement and created the feminist publication, Ms. magazine. Steinem continues to speak and write about women and women’s roles in media and politics.
Who is Gloria Steinem?, by Sarah Fabiny is about feminism, and how one reporter (Gloria) who doesn’t give up about what she believes in. I chose to read this book because the cover was intriguing, and I love learning about how woman, like Gloria, can use there intellegence to change the world. I recommend this to people who like the author, and like learning about very important people. While reading the book, I learned that a rocky beginning to your life, can make you strong, and confident, but have a lot of doubts.Gloria faked to being a reporter that was a man, instead of being a woman, to show that we are all equal. People thought that woman were house wives, and did the small parts, but they can do more than that. This biography was interesting and a good book to read, even if it’s a short book.

I would read this book again if I have any free time because it’s a book that teaches about women’s civil rights and that women and men should have the same rights.
Not for us. There are 214 books in the series, all beginning with "Who was/is...?" Almost EVERY one of the books in the series has very problematic content. Parents should BE CAREFUL. Do not hand these to your child without prereading.
This book is a book that really can bring out power in people. This is a really important topic. Gloria Steinem changed women's rights. She helped fight to give women the opportunity to have a choice in their careers rather than only having the option to be housewives or have typical girly jobs. She was inspired by her experiences and Gandhi was a big influence for her. He was a leader who fought with words and actions, not violence and weapons. Gloria was engaged to get married early in her life, but called off her engagement so she could keep fighting for women's rights. She got married when she was 66, after working most of her life to make a difference.

The Who Was…? biography series are perfect for elementary or intermediate age students interested learning about the featured person for an assignment or just for an exciting read. The afterward portion in this edition has a timeline on one side showing key events in Gloria Steinem's life and the opposite page shows worldwide key events during the same time period. Making for an interesting comparison and will help readers get a better feel for what else was happening at those times; a cool extra feature I haven't seen in many books.
Copies of Who Is Gloria Steinem? have flooded the little free library that I frequent. I keep seeing the caricature face of Gloria Steinem whenever I visit. My curiosity wore me down and I finally read a copy.
The book is slim but informative. I knew of Gloria Steinem and her feminist history. I didn't know about her background. She spent part of her childhood in Michigan. She was an Oxford scholar. She spent a few years in India. Betty Friedan did not like her. All in all, I'm glad I picked up this book. Learned a little bit more about a boldface name in the feminist movement.
Great book for kids to learn who Gloria Steinem is and how hard she worked to overcome obstacles and become a role model for kids everywhere as a primary leader in feminism and women's rights. My daughter and I both read this as part of a book club we are in. I'm looking forward to the book club discussion on Gloria's life and accomplishments. There was a lot I, as an adult, didn't know about her.
Whenever I read a 'who is/who was' series, I feel stronger as a reader. You get to have a glimpse of the journey they took, the ups and the downs. All of them are extraordinary and passionate about their crafts and beliefs. Now I know a little bit more about Gloria and so will the new generation of readers. Keep up the good work and the series.
It is Women's History Month and my students are doing biography reports on influential women. I read this book in order to show them how to prepare their report, make a visual, and present to the class. I like the Who Is? series. They are easy to read, tell about the person or event in a way that is easy for students to understand.
Good overview of Steinem and her life. It's perfect for middle grade readers and people like me who want to know the gist without getting too bogged down with details.
I had no idea she was born in Ohio, or spent time in India.
It was really cool that Gloria survived cancer. I liked that she is all about equality and that she was a girl scout because I can say the same for myself
