Born on a small farm in rural Michigan, Henry Ford’s humble beginnings were no match for his ambition. Ford quickly created a manufacturing dynasty, bringing affordable cars to the masses and forever changing America and the American workplace. Who Was Henry Ford? details his meteoric rise, and explains how the genius behind the assembly line and the Model T shaped modern American industry.
Henry Ford was a visionary and a pioneer in car manufacturing, but because it is a children's book, the text avoids report controversial subjects thoroughly, as Ford's anti-Semitism.
Who Was ...? biography series for middle grade brings fascinating character of Henry Ford who was the world’s most successful car maker and the founder of mass-production of automobiles.
Henry Ford (1863-1947) was born on the Dearborn farm in Michigan. He was good at math and fascinated with mechanical objects. He explored the inside of any watch he could find. He also took apart wind-up toys and studied them.
In nearby Detroit, he saw steam engines. He was so fascinated by it that he built a miniature steam engine, which exploded and burned down a nearby fence.
On another trip to Detroit, when he saw a self-powered road engine, he knew he wanted to become a mechanic and an inventor.
At sixteen, his path took him to Detroit, then back to Dearborn where he continued to learn how to build a steam engine. Meanwhile, he got married and said, “It was a very great thing to have my wife even more confident than I was.”
Meanwhile, the first gas-powered car was built in Germany in 1885 by Karl Benz, but Henry believed he could improve on the design.
Time was of essence as other inventors were racing to build automobiles. He didn’t like taking orders from investors. So he left the second company after only four months. Then, he found an investor that gave him free will.
Detroit automakers were already selling cars, but Ford advertised that his cheaper car Model A was well-made and simple to operate.
In all his work, he wasn’t driven by money. He said, “To do for the world more than the world does for you – that is success.”
His new goal was to make new Model T even cheaper and faster. His new mass production was great for productivity but it wasn’t an exciting work. He doubled the salary of some employees in order to keep them long term.
This biography illuminates a man who didn’t care about money; his drive was to improve people’s lives. He believed in working hard and living simple which was instilled in him by his mother. It was opposite of how his son lived. Thus, it led to some friction between them. Henry Ford was flawed as any human being and that is also portrayed in the story.
This illustrated biography series for young readers, ages 8-11, is presented in a relatable way, with simple sentences and enriched with insightful inserts.
Not sure about that conclusion that he made the world a better place to live.
Sure, he made cars easily available to the average person, raised wages from $2.50 to $5.00 an hour, boosted the economy by indirectly creating all businesses associated with driving, made long-distance travel possible for common people and produced engines for the Allies.
Still, he was no hero. He was against labor unions, ranted against Jews (though he issued an apology), treated his son and grandson poorly, added to global air pollution, outsourced American jobs and hired a security force to physically beat down his workers.
Then, although it’s not necessarily his fault or intention, think of all the lives lost in high-speed collisions from his powerful engine and all the people bombed and shot by soldiers transported by his engines.
I digress though, as many of those people killed were Nazis and imperialist fascist Japanese. That is certainly not a bad thing. On the flip side, many were innocent women and children. Again, not necessarily his fault, but did it make the world a better place?
I’m not sure that “making the world a better place” is the best conclusion. There should be more balance in the conclusion the author drew.
In Who was Henry Ford, I observed that Henry Ford was a determined person because he never quit on inventing his dream car. The book stated, “Many wise people explained... [that the car, a horseless carriage] could never be more than a toy.” A lot of people were doubting that Henry's horseless carriage is useful, but he never stopped on inventing models on his dream car. Throughout the book, Family support was also a major key that lead Henry Ford to success. Clara, Henry's wife, participated in Henry's invention process. On page 22, the book said, "It took two people to run and required electricity...Clara willingly helped." Clara was different from other wifes because she doesn't keep on telling her husband to come back and take care of her. On page 36, the book stated, "Clara kept a dairy noting how little she saw of her husband...But as always, she knew how important Ford's work was to him." The road to Henry Ford's success included determination and family support.
The only reason I picked up this book because it had the last name "Ford". My dad has the ford F350 so I wanted to read about how he made the cars and he owned a compey and they make ford cars, Ford make's The model T and the model A and more. He liked to have fun and he agreed on other people's things like his friend was Thomas Edison and they worked as a team ( some times).
Author writes about Henry Ford’s son who was into parties and alcohol. Could be a good book without this mention. Going to find other books for our children to read on Henry Ford.
Very good novel on describing Henry Ford's life and how he made the first cheapest car ever in the USA the Model T which there are not very many model T's around I think there is like 50 model T's in the whole world today

I loved learning facts about Henry Ford. One cool fact was how he experimented with different vegetables to see if he could use them in the auto industry. He wanted to help farmers in new and creative ways. Ford chemists used soybeans to make paint and plastic .
Ford wrote during the height of his fame. The value of people and ideas is that of their Ability to make the world a better place in which to live.
Great read for a student needing facts for school, etc. Love these books !
I chose to read Who Is Henry Ford because I am interested in Trucks and building things. Plus, everyone knows the name Ford. I wanted to learn more about the history of the first Model - T. This book I considered an easy read. It only took a few days for me to finish it. I would recommend this book to anybody who is interested in how Vehicles came about In the 1890s. This book is all about Henry Ford in his life. He was born on July 30, 1863 in Dearborn, Michigan. He grew up on his parent's Farm with five siblings. His favorite thing is a kid wants to build stuff and take apart things like watches. As a young child Henry was interested in Steam Engines because he saw them when he went to Detroit with his father. He built one with his friends but the device exploded and caught fire. So his dad let him have his own small workshop on the farm from then on. Eventually, Henry grew up and married Clara Bryant in 1888. They only had one child his name was Edsel.
Ford had many experiments but he accomplished and built his first car the quadricycle, in 1896. Then would open up Ford Motor Company in 1903 In Detroit, Michigan. The Model T becomes the most popular car in the world. He shipped them overseas even. But before the model she had a Model A that was cheaper than many other cars. And he was known as a good boss because he paid more to his workers than anyone else around, $5 a day. It took a while to get to that point and in the book it shows trials and errors. He didn't give up. He kept going. Some people called the vehicle a Horseless Carriage. Many people were interested in a lot of investors who came to help him start up his company. Henry Ford even helped build a race car. He was so concerned about making his car so fast for the racers that he Did not even have breaks. Some people might not know that Henry Ford produced other expensive cars, even the Cadillac I did not put that under Ford. Eventually, Ford retired, and his son took over. But today, people know forward everywhere and how successful it became because he never gave up. I think the author of this book was straightforward and had facts but gave some interesting Stories about Henry Ford and his family to keep you interested. It was a good book to realize how he came about making the Ford Motor Company so popular.
December Book Review, Who Was Henry Ford, Michael Burgan
In the book Who Was Henry Ford, it talked about how Henry Ford had made an impact in America by becoming the most successful car manufacturer in the United States. Ever since Henry was a little boy he was fascinated in machines. He had always loved going with his dad to Detroit for work on a steam engine train. One time when he went to Detroit with his dad he saw a farmer driving a self driving steam engine on wheels. They got off the train and had stopped to talk to the farmer about his new invention. The farmer told Henry all about it and how it worked. For the rest of his life Henry was fascinated in creating self driving cars of his own. During his life he created an "industrial marvel" which was the assembly line. This allowed the workers to stay in one place and do the same job over and over again.
In the book there is one theme through out the entire thing. The theme is to inform everyone about our past and the people who have made life how it is today. This is the theme because through the book all the author talks about is how Henry Ford helped make America into the great country it is today. You can tell that this is a theme because of the fact that he gives you a bunch of information that tells you all about Henry Ford and how he impacted America.
I recently finished the book Who was Henry Ford by Michael Burgan. This book was all about Henry Ford and how he decided to run his automobile business. He was a nice man with a wife and a son. He was not very nice to his son, he believed that he should not grow up and own his business. He didn't believe his son would ever be ready for that. Ford created the Model A and the Model T. Both very qualified cars. Personally, I liked the Model T because it looked the most like the cars we use today.
This overall was a good book that told me a lot about the life of Henry Ford. I especially liked when he created the Model T and how he used the assembly line method. I also liked how when he was a kid, he liked to take apart watches and put them back together. I did not really like the way he treated his son. He never really showed him any respect. I also did not really like what the Model A looked like. Overall, it was a good book and I learned so much from it.
I believe that really anyone would enjoy this book. It was full of incredible events and things that happened that I had never heard of. If you love cars, this would be a great book for you. Also if you like history and things that have happened, this would be a great book for you as well.
In the book "Who Was Henry Ford" by Michale Burgan talks about the life of Henry Ford. As a kid, he worked on a farm with his family. He also loved to take apart toys to study them. He would also fix his friends watches which I found interesting. One day when his family was driving down a road he found a farmer who had a self run tractor. He was in love with it and from there he started his own company making cars. He knew how to make a car because he had had many jobs in which he studied mechanics and cars. He had also seen a car in a country. He got money from investors but they eventually quit funding him because by he wasn't making a car that could be sold. In order to become famous, he made a race car. Luckily, he beat the fastest racer at that time. That made investors want to invest in him again. But in less than 4 months, he left them because he wanted to do things his own way. He eventually found an investor who let him do things his own way. From there, his company took off and he started making cars. Later into his company, he started using the assembly line and he was now mass producing cars. His most famous car being the Model T. Overall I enjoyed this book very much. Last year in 7th grade I had learned about the men who built America and he was one of them. It was also cool to see how his business started and all the investors that left him too. The book kept me interested and always involved with it. The author also included lots of details about his life which I also enjoyed. I would recommend this book to every car lover out there along with all the entrepreneurs of the world! I would also recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a good book.
This book is about Henry ford and his life as a great inventor. Henry ford was born July 30, 1864. Since he was little he was curious about how stuffed worked. When he was about 7 one of his dads workers took apart a clock and since that moment he wanted to learn how clocks worked. When he was 13 his dad took him to Detroit to see a self powered engeine. Which convenced him of becoming an inventor and mechanic. Then in 1889 he went to Detroit to go fix a gas powered engine. He got the idea to built a powered gas car. Then in June 4, 1896 he was ready to test the first engine. But after Henerys acomplishments he died 1941 of a strock.
I think this is a good book because it tells you what happened during his life and how step by step. I think that any outthere thats looking for a good book to read this book is perfect to read.
I bought this book when I went to The Henry Ford Museum so I could add it to my Who Was collection. I usually don’t read these books because they’re written for children, but I became so interested in Henry Ford through my experience that I figured I’d read this one.
It was nice that the information in the book matched the information I was told by tour guides at the museum. It gave me a sense of validity; that everything I was told wasn’t just made up stories to hook you into the museum.
Although I enjoyed the quick read, I feel that, because it was written for a young audience, it wasn’t written very well; there are several errors.
I always buy these books when we travel as a family and read them out loud. In this case, we were visiting Greenfield Village and The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation-- You learn a lot at those places, but these books are great at telling us more personal history of their subjects. And we always like how much more we know than what the locations we visit tell us. :)
Yes, the reading level is geared towards younger children-- but the content is for all! My kids are teenagers-- these are quick read, information packed books that take 30 minutes to read!
"Who Was Henry Ford?" by Micheal Burgan is a biography about the famous car maker Henry Ford. It describes how Ford revolutionized the car forever.
I liked the book because I am interested in cars. It was interesting reading about the guy how started it all. Once I started reading I couldn't stop.
I would reccomend this book to 5th to 8th graders. If you are interested in cars then you will like this book. If you enjoy other "Who Was?" books you will like this one too.
This book is a good overview of the life of a Henry Ford, who he was and his accomplishments. I read this to my boys and I also learned a lot. I of course knew what he accomplished and that he was friends with Thomas Edison (I knew that from reading “Who Was Thomas Edison”). But I did not realize some of the controversial things surrounding Ford such as his writing articles about his anti Semitic views in the newspaper he purchased. A very educational read.
105 pages. Great biography on a man who was great with building cars and fixing watches. I learned a lot about this inventor and his times. It includes information on Thomas Edison, the First Race, Ford’s Competitors, Car Culture, as well as sketches and maps. These were helpful as a reader in understanding the events and times in which he lived. Highly recommended for Grades 4-5.
Henry Ford was a very mechanically inclined person who knew how to take care of his employees and business. He began as a young boy understanding the mechanics of watches and grew to an adult who is best known for the Model T automobile. He was also a collector of items. This book informs the reader of his many accomplishments, some failures and the life of this famous man.
This was not my favorite in the Who was...? series. I have read many of these outstanding biographies for young readers. I missed some of the personal insights into Henry's childhood and areas that young readers might enjoy. It was factual but it lacked energy and passion for this incredible leader and creative genius.
Henry Ford was one of the interesting man that was good at creating machines. He created all sorts of vehcials in the 1800's and the 1900's. he was good at fixing anything that ran.He became famous when he sold all his cars and was very happy. This is why he was interesting.
An excellent look at the development of the automotive industry in America. In the days of climate change one can only regret the replacement of the original electric auto with the gasoline engine. One has to admire the vision and drive of Henry Ford.
Quick and easy read geared toward the younger set gives a fast forward through the life of Henry Ford. Nice accompanying sketches. A lead in to more in depth tales of Henry Ford and his fascinating life and cars.
The book doesn’t shy away from Ford’s flaws, touching on his controversial views, like his anti-Semitic writings and his harsh treatment of workers at times. This balanced portrayal helps young readers understand Ford as a multifaceted figure, not just a hero of industry.
