A special boxed set of the #1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling and Eisner award-winning SMILE and its companion, SISTERS! Includes bonus stickers!
In SMILE, Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader. But one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth. What follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached. And on top of all that, there's still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly. In SISTERS, Raina can't wait to be a big sister. But once Amara is born, things aren't quite how she expected them to be. Amara is cute, but she's also a cranky, grouchy baby, and mostly prefers to play by herself. Their relationship doesn't improve much over the years. But when a baby brother enters the picture and later, when something doesn't seem right between their parents, they realize they must figure out how to get along. They are sisters, after all.
These books are popular for a reason. They're fun, accessible and well told accounts of early teenagehood. Smile, which tells the story of Telgemeier extensive teeth problems, is the less well paced of the two. It feels for like an overview of that time in her life, and so while it doesn't exactly lack any arc or conclusion the structure feels a bit lacking.
Sisters, the newer of the two, feels more like it's building towards something. It uses its flashbacks more expertly, switching between them and a single, claustrophobic roadtrip as it puts Telgemeier's sense of family unity to the test. Rating them individually I would give Smile three stars and Sisters four. -Angela
Welcome to my TWO IN ONE edition 1#!!(I don't care if you call it a hashtag; IT'S A NUMBER SIGN IN THIS) So I enjoy the concept that if you're a fast reader and probably COULD NOT wait to get the second book this is just for you! It's Sisters(Second book) along with Smile(First book)! So yeah that's the main thing on those!(Feel free to look at my reviews on the separate books if you even care) So thanks on reading another on of my SHORT Reviews!!!
I think you will like the "Smile" series because they are page turners. If you don't like the "Smile" series or haven't read it, then you are missing out. The series go in a pattern--true story from her life then stories she made up. My favorite book from the series is "Sisters". "Sisters" is about Raina, the author, and her sister, Arma, who have never really gotten along. This book is about how they learn to get along. "Smile" is also a true story about Raina, and how she goes through a lot of drama and teeth problems. The last two in the series are "Drama" and "Ghosts". "Drama" is about Callie, a girl that wants to be a star on stage. "Ghosts", the last in the series, is about Cat and her sister, Maya, who has cystic fibrosis. It is all about their adventures in their new town, a ghost town.
These are phenomenal graphic novels with original storytelling and points-of-view. Both my 3rd-grader and my 5th-grader enjoy these. A perfect addition to a classroom with many talking points for a readers workshop and a good case study in creating a graphic novel.
I liked Smiles better than Sisters. The arguing in Sisters was a little much. 9 year old reluctant reader had this on her Christmas list, so I wanted to check them out prior to giving them to her.
