Charade: Impetuous\Outrageous

Rate this book
Judd Sanders couldn’t believe it when the beautiful, wide-eyed woman he rescued from some drunk hoodlums started poking her gorgeous little nose into his business. She was obviously a menace to herself – not to mention to his libido. Worse, she’d blow his cover. For little did Emily Cooper know that Judd was really a cop – whose cover left him a little too “uncovered” for his liking.Grade school teacher Carlie McDaniels trades in her frumpiness for the look of an exotic harem girl, at least for one costume party. So long, spinsterhood—and hello tall, dark and handsome Tyler Ramsey….Even after the best night of their lives, Tyler hasn’t guessed the identity of his harem hottie…and Carlie plans on keeping him in the dark. After all, a gorgeous guy like Tyler would never fall for his smart-talking best friend. And Carlie’s not sure she wants to know what would happen if he ever unveiled the naked truth!

Outrageous - 2/5 - So Judd is an undercover cop working as a stripper, trying to bust a gun dealer. Emily is masquerading around town trying to uncover the same gun dealer because he sold a gun that almost killed her brother. After rescuing her from some drunks while she's masquerading, Judd decides he can't risk her as a loose cannon, or she might compromise his investigation. So he brings her into it, sort of. She doesn't know he's a cop. But there's an attraction between them that might mess everything up.

And this book frustrated me beyond belief because of the characters. Emily is naive and honestly TSTL. Her naivety is really irritating, not endearing. And her stupidity is just frustrating. What idiot would go wandering around a seedy part of town trying to capture a gun dealer all by herself? And some of her actions are completely lacking thought One of the arguments throughout the story is that Judd keeps trying to protect her from herself and others and she keeps yelling that she can take care of herself. Only I don't believe she can. And I would admire a heroine who knows her limits much more than one who blows hot air. Judd is no less endearing. He's gruff and fits quite well into the seedier parts of town. And he's also an ass. He lies to her, he uses her (and he manipulates her) and he insults her constantly. At one point he thinks, he doesn't want anyone to humiliate or harass her, except himself of course. He considers her a menace (and she kind of is) and does everything he can to keep her blind to what he's doing, in the name of protecting her of course. He's bossy and if I'm not mistaken by the description, he has a mullet, so I can't take him seriously. Mostly it was the heroine's idiocy though that made me dislike the book.

And the romance was a bit ridiculous. Nothing but lust, with a bit of insta-love on the part of the heroine and an unreasonable need to be possessive and protective on the part of the hero's. I'm not sure they loved each other, since they barely knew each other. It took her less than 2 days to realize she loved him, after she'd just spent the entire day being ignored and lied to.

Impetuous - 3.5/5 - I haven't read a book with so much back and forth angst (and so much of it because of stubborn characters) since I read a Gaelen Foley book. Now, I like angst. And the angst in this story was good, but when you go through so much angst, the reward must be great. The reunion/ending here was a bit lackluster in comparison to the angst. But it was okay.

Tyler is a bit of a womanizer, with a carefree attitude and some outrageous charm. He sleeps with Carlie, who is the most insecure woman you've ever met (she has enough reason to be the way she is) at a costume party while she's in disguise. He has no idea who she is, but they both feel a connection, but she runs off and leaves him before morning. When he meets the "real" her, she is frumpy, prickly and aggravating. He becomes friends with her and through his developing feelings for her, becomes attracted to her as well. Only he still has a curiosity about his mystery woman from the party. And then there's Carlie's insecurities to get in the way too.

I liked Tyler, even though I thought his behavior was a bit pushy at times and he was somewhat insensitive. I mean, if anyone made such criticisms about my wardrobe, I'd probably smack him. But Carlie doesn't care. But it's all an act with her - she's very vulnerable. And her insecurities made her very nearly cold-hearted at times. So I'm still not sure that I actually liked her. An engaging story with a decent romance and some damn good angst.

Charade contains two stories written by Lori Foster. The stories take place in the 90's, maybe. Characters carry beepers, use house lines, no use of a smart phone, etc. While it did not interfere with the story, many times I caught myself thinking how much faster the characters can move a long the plot faster or communicate more efficiently. Either way, here is my take on both stories: Story #1 Impetuous: This one started off strong and sweet and rather steamy and spicy. Carlie leads a very by route routine as a teacher so dressing up as a sexy harem girl is out of her character. Still she embraces it and uses this as a cover to act out on an attraction with her friend's brother-in-law, Tyler. Tyler was recruited by his brother to help Carly with an afterschool project for troubled kids. They reluctantly spend time with each other, and their friendship grows. Lust also grows but Tyler is on a mission to find the sexy harem girl and also drive Carlie absolutely crazy with his shenanigan. Honestly, I thought this was a 4 out of 5 stars, but lost it because I did not feel she was a real teacher and made immature calls. Now story #2 is Outrageous. The trope is undercover cop meets volunteering heiress without a clue for detective work, but thinks she can wing it. Honestly, the misogyny is strong in this. Emily has romantic ideas of how a boyfriend/lover should be and she hones in Judd as someone who needs to be saved and protected. Um. No! She is well aware that Judd is undercover and a detective to boot. She somehow thinks all is needed to catch the bad guys and protect Judd is her and her camera. She refers to her 16 year old brother as a man, which irked me because she makes comparisons between Judd and her brother. Her story/trauma is believed to affect her inability to judge and form impressions, boundaries, and connections in relationships due to a fiancé who used her only for her money. That is it. The trauma was due to the fiancé. So, she has made an effort to not do relationships until she sleeps with Judd. Personally, Impetuous carries this book. I still enjoy reading Lori Foster and can't wait to read her next book in my TBR list.

Outrageous - This is a shorter love story about Emily and Judd. It was a bit slow for me but overall I enjoyed it. I would give this 3 stars.

Impetuous - The love story of Carlie and Tyler. I thought this book was so much better than Outrageous. I liked reading how their relationship developed. It was cute and funny. I would give this 4 stars.

Just loved the fist story in this book. It was so entertaining and kept me intrigued the entire time. Loved the characters and I just couldn’t wait for them to get together. However, I just didn’t find myself really interested into the second story as much. It was just ok, but I preferred the first story so much more.

Two expected reads from Harlequin

Carlie and Tyler are a good couple, and their romance proceeds on predictable lines. I'm on the fence about Emily and Judd; Emily is a sweetheart, but she brings a lot of TSTL to the plot, and Judd is heroic and full of angst. The younger brother is a nice touch, but even his part is predictable.

Excellent characters that were funny, sexy, and sexy.

Great story line that had me wondering how Tyler would find out about Carlie

Second story was very good. Funny characters with a bit of steam for this cold winter nights reading

Outrageous:
Judd Sanders is undercover, trying to bring down a crime boss, that killed the one man he considered family, and now he wants justice. Posing as a male stripper, he sees a woman that is not his usual clientele. A woman of grace, poise and elegance and money. Emily Cooper is looking for justice, her brother was injured by the same crime boss, and she will do anything to bring justice to this man of crime. When she meets Judd Sanders, she feels a excitement that is new and fresh, and can't deny the attraction she feels for him. But when she learns of his true identity, and that she may have almost blown his cover, they start to work together, and with their combined desire for each that almost consumes them, but will Judd and Emily be able to have a future together despite their differing backgrounds?

So Charade is a dual combination of two marvelous stories: Outrageous and Impetuous. I will say that having never read Lori Foster before, I was excitement. So many stellar reviews and ratings of her books, so I was pretty excited to delve into Charade and OH BOY did I adore this book!! In Outrageous, I would put this one under romantic suspense. The story begins when Judd and Emily meet on the street and sparks fly instantly, and they can't deny the attraction they have for each other. At first Judd can't risk having feelings for Emily, he has a job to do, a job that if he isn't careful could get them both killed. But when he learns what Emily is really after, he decides they can work together, that she can only aid in his cover. But Emily isn't just any woman. Despite her appearance of wealth and elegance, she is the most honorable woman he has ever met, and she strikes a chord within him, that brings out his inner passions and breaks away the ice in his heart. Outrageous was such a stimulating story, and I couldn't get enough of it. Both characters were heartwarming and full of zest and tended to just keep you at the edge. Whether from the suspense from the plot, or wondering when these two will actually admit what they feel to each other. A masterful written story of danger, desire and a moving love story.

Impetuous
Carlie McDaniels is a schoolteacher, and when her best friend coerces her to trade her frumpy outfits for a harem girl costume, she almost think she has lost her mind. But on that night of the masquerade party, the one man she has had a crush on for years, comes looking for her, attraction is mutual and they share one special sensual night, but Carlie knows that Tyler would never look twice at her in her normal attire. Tyler is a lawyer, and successful, but when he meets Carlie, he at first finds her cold and aloof, but he soon discovers that there is alot more to Carlie than meets the eye. They strike up a friendship of sorts, a friendship that turns into something more. But will Carlie have the courage to tell Tyler the truth about the truth behind the mask? or will she lose him forever.

Impetuous was a story that just sung to me. I don't even know why, because Carlie isn't your usual heroine, and at first I couldn't understand her judgement of Tyler. But as you get deeper in the story, you see that Carlie has been hurt and she has major trust issues and doesn't think Tyler could ever love her as herself. In this story we see two people that need each other. I loved seeing them turn into friends first and then lovers. It was a slow and steady romance, but they definitely know how to light up some fireworks in this one. And when the truth comes out...well watch out readers, it just might shock you!! Impetuous is a story of plot twists and just keeps you guessing with each chapter, high sexual tension, and pure romance fun!!! SIZZLES AND TOP NOTCH!!

IMPETUOUS

Grade school teacher Carlie McDaniels dresses up in a harem costume at Halloween and has sex with Best Friends brother-in-law Tyler Ramsey. It's hot, heavy and anonymous. Tyler wants to find his mystery harem woman as he felt they had a connection (other than body parts) and Carlie doesn't want him to find out it was her (she'd be embarrassed).

Carlie hides behind baggy clothes and bad hair styles due to the emotional and psychological damage caused by her first marriage leaving her insecure. Tyler is sick of women using him for money or status and wants desperately to have someone 'know' him. Tyler pursues a friendship with Carlie though she keeps pushing him away and this friendship leads down the inevitable romance/sex path.

Generally a nice story. The protagonists compliment each other though Tyler for me was a lot more likeable than Carlie. They both have baggage and Tyler seemed more accepting of it and their building relationship than Carlie who at times came across rather rude and selfish though she is an apparent Saint of the community.

OUTRAGEOUS

Judd Sanders is working undercover as a stripper to build a case against a gun trafficker. Emily Cooper is trying to find evidence of the gun trafficker after her little brother was scarred by a back-firing illegal weapon.

Emily is a an upper-crust lady who comes across rather impetuous - I really don't think she has thought about how she is going to get the evidence to convict someone as a gun trafficker... anywho, it is just a story... Judd is strong, good lucking cop and has a personal stake in busting the bad guy.

An ok storyline, again the male protagonist seemed a more likeable character but a nice story of opposites attracting but finding out that who a person is and not their background or upbringing makes them a good person, and they have more in common because of this.

In both stories the females have prudish tendencies - I just don't understand female characters who claim intelligence, maturity and independence and can't say the word "sex" or "penis" - this 'demureness' turns me off characters which is probably why I liked the male leads more in these instances. The relationships build very quickly and love matures fast.

Both stories are decent Sunday afternoon reads.

Lori Foster has written a really good book. Charade is an excellant example of her talent of writing.
In the first story Carlie is a frumpy middle school teacher, who does not like to be exposed to anyone. She asks her best friend to pick up a Halloween Costume for her, and her best friend picks up a harem girl costume. Carlie decides to try and get through the night, but when she catches the eye of Tyler Ramsey, she runs away. Tyler follows her to the pool house, and they engage in a one night stand. Tyler is not allowed to remove the mask from the harem girl so he does not know who she is.

I really liked this story, it was very well written and I enjoyed the plot and the final conclusion. It really was a wonderful read. I gave this story 4 out of 5 stars.

The second story is a very imaginative tale. Judd is waiting outside his strip club, waiting for his music to start playing so that he can go on, and strip for the ladies. Emily, is a good girl in a bad neighborhood. When Emily starts talking to the wrong sort of people, Judd steps in and saves her from being used for sex. He halls her into the bar, sits her down and performs his strip tease. After the show, he takes her home. He finds out that she was trying to buy information on who sold her brother a gun, only thing is Judd is trying to find out the same information. He is an undercover cop, who needs to find out more infomation on the local gun dealer. Emily must stay out of the way, but she does not want to. Judd finds a reason and tries to keep her out of the seedy part of town without blowing his cover.

I did not like this story, I felt so let down after the first story was so well written. I think this story just has too many ideas going on at one time. I gave this story 2 out of 5 stars.

Charade was a decent story package. I liked the first story, but found the second story lacking. I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars.

I absolutely love Lori Foster's writing so I was really excited when I saw this one up for review request on NetGalley. I initially didn't realize it was a reprint of two of Lori's earlier works but after finishing them I could definitely feel the difference. The first story, Impetuous, was just as engrossing as Lori's other books but I had a hard time liking Carlie. She was so judgmental and while Tyler may have been a playboy I think her rudeness and condescending attitude towards him were so much worse. I get she was a flustered after their one night of passion but still it was hard to like her. I really liked Tyler until the end where his behavior to "win" Carlie back really irked me. I know he was trying to win her back but the way he kept physically touching her despite her protests felt dirty to me. I don't care if you feel sure a woman must want you that doesn't give you the right to ignore her protests. Still like I said Lori's voice did keep me intrigued in this one right until the end.

Outrageous on the other hand just didn't do it for me. It smacked too much of the insta-love with Judd and Emily falling for each other in just a matter of days. I find that so irritating. My other pet peeve are heroines who make obviously stupid decisions. Emily's behavior at the end of the book was just so dumb, she almost ruined everything Judd was working for and it made no sense. Then to top it off there were no repercussions for her irresponsible behavior. I know she thought she was "protecting" Judd but anyone with any sense would have realize what a bad idea that was.

In the end though Impetuous had a few issues I enjoyed it but Outrageous just wasn't to my taste and I am glad Lori's recent works have been so amazing. Definitely do not judge Lori Foster based on these two books.

Lori Foster and her sinful writings; stories of alpha males and sassy females; pleasure and pain all wrapped into presents of fun, witty and remarkable reads.

Charade is two individual stories Impetuous (1995) and Outrageous (1997), republished under one title, but keeping the original titles within. Good for me as both are non-reads for and me I thoroughly enjoyed both the books, although Impetuous was my favorite of the two.

A dashing pirate and a ravishing harem girl come together in Impetuous giving us a sizzling read of two complete opposites being attracted. Tyler Ramsey falls head over heels for Carlie McDaniels and they have one sensual night of pleasure and passion. Tyler is clueless to the identity of the luscious beauty and Carlie likes to keep it that way. Circumstances bring Tyler and Carlie to work with kids after school, and Tyler slowly realizes he is falling in love with the frumpy Carlie and yet feels guilty remembering the harem girl. Carlie gave up her heart to Tyler already and yet her insecurities keep Tyler at bay. Now it’s to be seen if that one night of recklessness can give them a chance at a future of love and trust.

Let’s meet the male stripper, Judd Sanders. Outrageously handsome and strips Emily Cooper of her bearings. Working undercover in a strip club, Judd is hunting the killer who had put bullets into his father figure Max, and Emily with all her sophistication and money is trying to blend into the dark side searching for the guy who is selling faulty guns and her brother being one of the victims. Judd saves her ass from getting killed and both end up under one roof in the name of danger and protection.

Two fun reads for a perfect weekend or with a mug of hot chocolate!

In CHARADE we are given two outstanding stories. They are both have well-developed characters and storylines. In the stories some one is not who they really are, they are playing a different person. Once the CHARADE is over, will love keep these couples together. In IMPETUOUS Carlie goes to a costume party as a genie and ends up sleeping with Tyler. Oh what a glorious night that was, but the next day Tyler wants to find his genie. His sister will not tell him and the woman would not take off her mask. Once he starts to have a relationship with teacher Carlie, he starts to forget about his genie. Later he finds out that Carlie is the woman from that night, he feels betrayed. This is such a great story, and I loved the characters.

In Outrageous Judd is an undercover cop trying to find out who is selling guns illegally. He is undercover as a male stripper, when he meets Emily who is being harassed by three men. Emily is trying to find out who sold her brother a gun. When Emily has an intruder in her home she finds out that Judd is a cop. This is a great story with well-developed characters and storyline. Both stories are great and I give CHARADE 4/5 stars. I recommend this book to everyone.

The combination of these two stories together is absolutely fantastic. The suspense in Outrageous is tempered with the sweetness and mystery in Impetuous. The entire novel was very well written and quite inviting. Foster’s impeccable writing combines with two original & captivating storylines that kept me hooked throughout. I was completely wrapped up in her well developed, easy to picture world.

For both of these stories it took me a while to warm up to the female lead, but once I did I was hooked on the character. Their insecurities combined with their knowledge of what they wanted was a heady mix. The male leads in each of the stories were fantastic. Although completely different individuals, the well-developed, charismatic personas definitely leave you wanting to know them, and quite possibly falling in love.

I definitely enjoyed reading this re-issue of Foster’s first two stories. They were unique stories individually and a fantastic novel together.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

I loved these 2 books! They were both sexy, well written romances. There's action, there's romance, steam and lots of chemistry!
You can feel the sparks fly between both couples!

Impetuous: "You're even housebroken." A case of secret identity will start a fire with Tyler and Carlie. This woman who's been hurt before finds it hard to let go and realize that Tyler could really be interested in her. She is sarcastic and funny. Tyler is crazy sweet. "Losing you is scary. Loving you is easy, and unbelievably exciting." This is super sweet and romantic!

Outrageous: This is a great action story. I loved the story line. Emily puts up with a lot all to protect her brother. But she's not as innocent as she pretends to be. When Judd gets her in the bedroom, the siren comes out of her! This was a great mix of action and romance. Not to mention super sexy! Mmmm. maybe I should hang out near strip clubs a little more lol!

I have to say that I really enjoyed this pairing of stories.

Impetuous - I love watching Carlie and Tyler's relationship develop. It started out steamy, but I loved that he was persistent in getting to know her, even to the point of forgetting his obsession with his harem girl.

Outrageous - This one I was less into, only because I felt like Emily and Judd weren't really seeing eye to eye and it bothered me that she kept putting herself in harm's way. Either way, I really enjoyed the way he was able to help her and her brother stand up for themselves.

Another great outing by Lori Foster!

Two good romances. I liked Carlie from the first story, but I found Emily very stupid/overly naive in the second story.

So Carlie and Tyler go to a costume party, Tyler doesn't recognize Carly. They have some fun in the pool house and she sneaks out before he wakes up. They get "set up" and he finds her prickly, horribly dressed, and tempting. She can't believe that he'd like the "real" her.

Emily is out looking for the dealer who sold her little brother a gun. Judd is trying to get evidence on the guy who killed his mentor. They play spy and house. Then the bust goes down and Judd can't believe that Emily would want/need him for anything other than getting the bad guy.

Lori Foster's books always amaze me! No matter the age of the book they're mainly the same, AWESOME!! The stories always have me transmitting myself in place of the heroine & I'm always loving how everything plays out! Not to mention steamy romance scenes that aren't jammed together to make the book feel rushed. They're spaced out & work fluidly with the stories.

These 2 wonderful stories are no different. In these 2 books someone is concealing their identity in some fashion. One basted on insecurity & the other due to their job. Both equally warranted in realism! I could actually see both scenarios happening.

It just goes to show: 'Never judge a book by its cover!'
