4.5 Gypsy Stars

"Our destiny went soul deep, had been written in the stars long before either of us had been born. We truly were at the mercy of nature, and what nature was demanding of me I could no longer deny. Had no desire to deny."

Even though this story took me a few chapters to get into once I got into the flow, I was all in. The author presents the first soulmate's tale along with the present day where Trinity is seeking refuge in a gypsy camp protected by their magic and wards from ongoing apocalypse. She seems to have a magical connection to Gerik while her heart wants Xan. Both men have imperfections while both are hot as hell and want her desperately.

"Don't you get it? It's forcing you to me! This beyond you and me! You don't have a choice and neither do I!"

Trinity struggles with her feelings and unanswered questions while the world outside the camp is facing death and destruction. Gerik calls to her soul and seems to be her destiny with his magic, long blonde hair and hot touches. While Xan is the ultimate manwhore warrior who will have a reader just as torn as Trinity by end of book 2.5.

"What I experienced with Xan was life at its finest. The way his smiles turned me inside out and how his kisses made my stomach dance, the way his skin gelt underneath my touch and how amazing he felt inside me. It...it was everything."

Madeline Sheehan delivers an angsty love triangle with gyspies, magic, apocalypse, one soul mate and some great twists.

The Soul Mate was original and captivating. A post apocalyptic, paranormal fantasy full of angst, sexy alpha males and magic. You basically have a past and present story unfolding, the original soul mate story and Trinity story. Trinity has found refuge among a group of gypsies, where she meets both Gerik and Xan.

description

"Both were beautiful, caring and ready to be there for me when I needed them. Gerik made me drop to my knees, desperate and... not at all myself. Xan... He made my stomach flutter when he smiled at me. His soft touches made me ache for more than just touches."

I really enjoyed this story, it did take me a few chapters to get into it, but once I did, I was hooked. I think Trin deserves both guys! How is a girl to choose? Hell, the whole world has gone to shit and there are scary ass vampires running a muck...

Update 3/20/14 - this book is now free on Smashwords:

http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/...

It's a great series...last book hopefully coming out soon. If you like her Undeniable series, I definitely recommend this one!

4.5 ★'s

To be honest, I was only interested in this series because I really enjoyed Madeline Sheehan's Undeniable and her way of writing gritty, dark, and different books. Then someone mentioned the "C" word and I knew I had to read them. And yes, the "C" word means what you think it does! But just in case,

I just want to say that I was riveted and I loved (almost) every moment with these crazy gypsies!! The book starts out with getting to know Trinity and Gerik (think Eric from True Blood) and that there's something weird about their relationship and what happens when they touch skin to skin. Trinity is convinced that Gerik is doing something to her magically and since she is a Gaje (non-Gypsy) she cannot be told their secrets. She gets extremely frustrated because she can't control herself when he touches her. Then, she finds out some disturbing news and she's determined to do what she wants.

Xan is the resident bad boy (think Jason Momoa with dreads) and he and Trinity form a friendship. Trinity is drawn to him but when Xan kisses her she is repulsed. Xan is only half gypsy and Trinity feels that they have a type of bond because of it. She needs to know what's going on and Xan is willing to give her that because, of course, no one is going to tell him what to do.

There is also a bit of a back (pre) story going on dealing with soul mates. I like to feel like I had a good handle on it but it was a bit disconcerting. I'm hoping things will come together as we get more of the story and what happened.

There are a lot of great characters...some you will love and some you will hate. They view things differently...I mean, come on, they are gypsies. And of course, the world has been taken over by Skin Eaters...beings who eat humans and anything else, so everything is much more dire, much more dramatic and much more intense.

It was wonderful getting to see the relationships form between Trinity and Gerik and Trinity and Xan. I especially loved when we started finding out more about the magic and what the gypsies could do. I also liked finding out about the gypsy ways and their customs and celebrations.

There is some steamy action but it's nowhere near as detailed as in Undeniable but there is a lot of it. And there is definite drama. If you love all that emotional, angsty stuff, you will love this. But there's also lots of action...remember those Skin Eaters? Yea, there's lots of fun with those too.

I thought MS did a great job putting a different spin on soul mates and paranormal creatures but the ending is a killer. I would recommend having the second book ready. I couldn't get to it fast enough. I actually finished both books in a little over a day and regrettably now have to wait for the third book.

Favorite quotes:

♥ "You are not his anymore, Trin."

♥ “That, Trinity,” Gerik whispered, just before everything went black. “Was me taking what has always been mine.”

**** 4 1/2 Stars ***

The Soul Mate is an absolute must read.

I must admit that it took a while (not a long while but a short while) to actually get into the story. It's very different from Undeniable (duh) and I think I had trouble with the transition from going all hardcore angsty biker kickass dudes to an apocalyptic PRN read. I eventually put Deuce to the side (but not very far b/c he loves being around me-hehe) and I really started getting into the characters and the very unique and awesome story line.

Vampires. Hot Male Gypsies. Gypsy ladies who love to spread their legs. Magic. Romance. Angst. Secrets. Flashbacks (which I just love love love).

Trinity is a non-gypsy who lives in a camp full of Gypsies. There is just something that draws her to Gerik and she fights/struggles with giving herself to him completely b/c she is certain that magic is involved. She wants to be with someone b/c of her own choosing not b/c of some other force.

Gerik is like the Golden Boy in the clan. Everyone knows how much magic he has and that he is destined to be with Trinity. He fucks up with Trinity when she after he told her that nothing is going on. Psshhh typical male. Grrrr. I picture myself throwing eggplants at him. Why eggplants? Hell if I know. That's the first thing that popped into my head.

Xan is (one of many) the bad boy of the clan. He is a mut. Half Gypsy half non-gypsy. He is a mystery. I love him! He teaches Trinity how to defend herself and man you can sense and feel the attraction between him and Trinity. You know that T & G are destined to be together but at the same time you are rooting for T & X to get together as well. If I was Trinity, I would just have a threesome with them. Badabing Badaboom!

Trouble comes to the clan while some of the clan members are out on a raid. What happpens during the attack is just heart wrenching and badass at the same time. Lightness becomes Darkness. Power is bestowed and shit is about to get real.

The book ends with you wanting more and you asking yourself out loud... "What the fuck just happened?"

Side note: I was going to rate this book 4 stars but after reading a teaser for book 3, it filled some of the holes/questions I had on this one. I have a feeling that any questions you have about something not being explained or whatever in bk 1 and/or bk 2 will come to light in book 3. It will have you going "Aahhaa!!"

Happy Reading :)

I don't know what is wrong with me....but I saw all the raving reviews about this book and I just had to read it...I think this may be another case of It's me.....not you or I just had such high expectations?

About 20% in and to me:

I'm confused with all the names

I hate Gerik (because of Onyx)

Trinity is frustrating me

So I think it's time I put this one down and take a break.

5 all-consuming STARS

Did you like love Undeniable? Have you searched other books written by the one and only Madeline Sheehan and came across The Soul Mate? And when you saw it says Paranormal/Fantasy/ Apocalyptic/Science Fiction, you thought it's not for you? DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AS I DID! My new year's resolution was that I will read whatever kind of books my favorite authors write. And without anybody steering me in the direction of this book, I chose to give it a try (I was convinced I'm not into paranormal romance. Boy, was I wrong or what?!).

Best decision ever !!!

I pinky promise from now on to read everything this amazing woman writes, cause she knows how to pull my heart strings like no other and her original writing makes worth the heartache and emotional rollercoaster I ride every time I read her books.

The Soul Mate is different form Undeniable, but it's still written by the same genius talent and it shows. It's the same gritty, raw, taboo, soul-crushing, disturbing, outstanding, leave-you-speechless kind of story.
The book starts at the very beginning of everything: set in Bulgaria 1065 A.C.E. in a Roma clan (gypsies), where a beautiful girl with big green eyes is born and her soul mate awaits.

She opened her eyes wide and the entire group gasped. “Green?”
No Roma had eyes.
“She is perfect my friends do not fret, for green represents balance, harmony and stability."

And then we're transported back to the present day where Trinity, a non-gypsy, is sheltered by the apocalypse that hit mankind by a Roma Clan that uses magic to protect itself, putting up wards and happily getting along with life. Well... happily as they could considering outside the camp were creatures who didn't think twice when it came to suck the life out of you and eating your flesh till they hit bone. If you think that's the big problem surrounding Trinity, you haven't met two thickheaded males, one the opposite of the other, but both equally... how should I put it... YUMMY!!!

Gerik

A gypsy with Scandinavian ancestors and the one who holds magic and power like no other in the Clan. Trinity is attracted to this "viking", but she fears that he holds her will captive and everything that she's feeling for him is due to magic.

Xan

The half Romanian gypsy half American native, and the guy your mother warned you about, but forgot to say he's going to be totally HOT and oozing sexuality. Xan is so hardheaded and stubborn and doesn't give a f**k what everyone thinks, you will hate him so much you'll be certain it's gotta be true love.

And now you can see Trinity's and my confusion:

"Gerik was the stuff gods and goddesses were made of.   Only… a Viking God.   Well, actually a Gypsy god, but tomato, tomáto."

"He was reckless in a way no one else in camp was. Not only was Xan an adrenaline junkie but there was a chip on his shoulder that was dug in deep. It made him cocky, hot-headed and downright mean at times."

"Whereas Gerik reminded me of a large cat, his movement’s fluid and graceful despite of his size, Xan was more like a bear."

"Both were beautiful, caring and ready to be there for me when I needed them. Gerik made me drop to my knees, desperate and... not at all myself. Xan... He made my stomach flutter when he smiled at me. His soft touches made me ache for more than just touches."

This book takes the love triangle to a whole new level. Trinity, make up your mind cause I'm going crazy. OH GODS, help me!!!!!

Bet you forgot of the fact the world is ending, huh?

I was so happily engrossed in the story that I never saw it coming. I had a major "What the huh?!" moment by the end of this book.
Why are you doing this to me?!
I LOVE IT!
Thank the gods, for there is another book.

The reasons you need to pick this book up:
1. The unique humor of the author (ROFLOL says it all)
2. So many other characters and amazing personalities, you'll be blown away and in awe of what the author molded.
3. The flashbacks and the story behind the story.
4. My most favorite part: it has Romanian words. I never would have dreamed of reading a book with Romanian words in it, I never would have dreamed of reading a book with Romanian words written by one of my favorite authors. I love you, Madeline Sheehan, you made my heart swell and leap out of my chest every time Xan said "fată". (FYI: I'm a Romanian girl, so if you see sentences in my reviews that not make any sense, that's pretty much why :P )

Now go grab a copy of the book, we don't know how much time we have left until an apocalypse hits us.

I am a mad fan of Madeline Sheehan’s Undeniable books, and have been so looking forward to exploring her PNR series. And I am happy to say that I really liked this first book in the Holy Trinity series! It’s original and intriguing, with a great heroine, a bunch of swoony badasses, a vampiric apocalypse, some magical goings on, and a sweet romance. And at only 196 pages, it’s a really quick read.

Trinity is in the unique position of being the only Gaje living in a Romani camp. That is, she’s the only non-magic person living in a community of magical gypsies. She has no idea why she’s allowed to stay, but during the apocalypse where the human race was pretty much wiped out by ‘flesh eaters’ and everybody she knew and loved was brutally killed, she was rescued by gorgeous, muscled, and uber-magically-powerful, Gerik, and taken to live with his ‘family’.

When the book starts, we are dumped right into the middle of the story. The apocalypse has happened, the action is underway, and the dynamics between the characters are established – including some SERIOUS sexual tension happening between Trinity and Gerik, as well as an antagonistic but still chemistry-laced relationship with resident badass, Xan. The story of how everything got to this point unfolds slowly, alongside the present day action.

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail about the plot, because I went in not knowing much, and enjoyed watching it all unfold, so I don’t want to ruin that for somebody else.

I really liked Trinity. She has adjusted well to her new world, and seems to take things in her stride. Her bond with Gerik is strong and all-consuming, and while she suspects that it’s not entirely natural, she is brave enough to test limits, think for herself and not be swept away by the insane lust and desire she feels for him whenever he is near. And even when she is faced with her destiny, she is still strong enough to question, despite the possible consequences.

There are a lot of characters in the story, most of them with unusual names, and I totally lost track of most of them and how they were all related, but I didn’t feel too lost. There is an interesting side-story with Trinity’s best friend, Becki, but most of the action centers around Trinity, Gerik and Xan.

The two boys are quite mysterious. Neither of them make any secret of the fact that they want Trinity, but while Gerik is the golden boy of the clan, Xan is a bit of an outsider, with no magical powers of his own, but both are gorgeous, sexy, badass man-whores, and both have their secrets. I enjoyed the dynamic between the three of them, and although the romance didn’t sweep me off my feet, there is some great chemistry, some pretty hot moments, some swoon, and a little bit of sexy time.

The whole story is interwoven with the story of a pair lovers from the 11th Century - Emilien and Treime. Their backstory adds so much to what’s happening in present day, and leads up to the big moment where everything ‘clicks’ together, and OMG! Epiphany!!! I love how it all fits together, it’s so cleverly done, and it adds so much more depth to the story!

The ending had my heart pounding as the action all unfolded (OMG, so much happens!!!! ) and although there was a bit of WTFery (seriously…what????), I’m diving straight into the next book and can’t wait to see what happens from here!

4 stars.

That was one good book a love triangle like no other, oh my xan wow your brooding after trinity was fab, gerik you was a total ass but later in the book how my heart broke.

Photobucket

Set in the apocalyptic world where disease has turned humans into zombie/vampire ish creatures. Trinity has been taken in by Romany travellers who have magic to protect themselves.

There were so many names in this book that got but confusing, so just concentrated main people's names, which made no difference to story.

This book is full of surprises and emotions and if you like pnr a and like Madeleine Sheehan style, or even if you haven't read anything of hers give it a try.

I'm off to start book 2 now.

O-M-G, this book took me by surprise. Awesome. Madeline Sheehan, you have become one of my favorite authors. You just know how to write a great story. There is not one minute of boring in this book. So many things are happening and the Epilogue....AWESOME!!!! I have to admit, at first, when the story was going back and forth in time, I was like "I hope there is a point to all this?" And there is.

I do not want to give anything away, so I can't even really say much but I love Trinity, I love Xan, I love and understand Gerik (sometimes). I think I love everyone in the camp well maybe 1 person, but I can't tell you. :) There is a love triangle (kind-of), but done so well.

I am glad that book #2 is out but when is Book #3 coming out? A little nervous to start book #2 without a release date for #3. I can't even tell you what I loved and am nervous about since I don't want to give anything away.

Did I skim? No, you can't or you will miss something.
Did I think about this book when I had to put it down? Yes
Would I recommend? Yes

Holy Crap! Loving Holy Trinity. I was skeptical about reading this book 'cause the blurb sounded kinda woo woo, but I am so freaking glad I did! Madeline Sheehan just made my Top 10 Favorite Authors list. (I don't know which author she bumped off it, but someone got the axe). Between this series and the Undeniable series, she shows that she has major talent.

Basically a description for this book would be the original I Am Legend novel meets a Valerie Dearborn type love triangle. Even though the ending was a cliffhanger it was awesome. I'm so happy that book 2 is already published so I can move straight on to that.

Solid 4.5 Stars

I started this one late last night and could not be moved from it at all today. This book was beyond intriguing. Emotional, decadent, sexy, and all consuming. I loved the way this one flowed. The set up into this world pulls you in and keeps you there. You become so anxious to know what is happening or going to happen next, that you'll actually get angry that the answers are not coming fast enough. The melding of the past histories in with the present, the parallels, are done superbly. The telling of what seems to be 2 different stories coming together as one I loved.

For me there was nothing predictable about what was happening or going to happen. Ms. Sheehan certainly kept me on my toes. Screaming & gasping and pretty much looking like this throughout this novel...

And the ending & epilogue? Had me like...

This trilogy I pray only gets better. I'm off to start book 2 & something tells me I'm gonna be insane for the 3rd book since it has yet to be released... If you are still lost on my point, I'm highly recommending that you read this book :D

What the hell did I just read?!?

Can't really go on without saying I hate reading books with cheating people in it. And I really don't love reading love triangles. And this had the mother load... And both of them were so in-your-face out there. Even though it was almost all the book was about, I hated it. But, I accept that it is my issue of not really loving to read that type of stuff.

Still I'm a glutton for pain and I couldn't stop reading and feel so broken. Which is why I think the writing was amazing, it sucks you right in and you just can't let it go. The story was amazing. It was original and so rich. It was only 163 pages but it definitely wasn't empty, it was filled with everything.

Gerik... I hated him, how could he claim she is her soulmate and just be with Onyx right in front of her. He made me so angry, I can't even begin to explain here.
Xan... Even though everything suggests that he is really a man-whore I'm glad that Trinity found herself with him. Because of her connection with him, I was actually thinking maybe Gerik wasn't really her soulmate...

And having flashes about Treime and Emilian was beautiful. My heart ached for their love and their broken souls...

Onto the next book.

After reading Undeniable, I have to admit, I'm a Madeline Sheehan fan for life, so naturally, I had to check out the Holy Trinity series.

I think Madeline Sheehan has come a long way as a writer since this book was written, but that's not to say The Soul Mate isn't a great book - it is!

The Soul Mate begins with a look into the past and a rather confusing analogy of the whole soul mate concept. I think the book jumps around a bit too much, without going into too much detail when it counted (like during some encounters between Gerick and Trinity, I wanted to know Gerick's reaction to her and wasn't awarded it). Also, the whole dystopian thing isn't really explained. I found myself completely confused about the events leading up to Trinity living in the gypsy camp. I wanted to know where her parents were and details about how and why the world was being overrun by Skin Eaters...

I have to give this book 4 stars despite my criticism on the lack of clarity and description with a few parts of the book, because what this book lacks in that aspect, it makes up for in believable, tragically-flawed and seriously hot characters. Madeline has an unbelievable knack for making readers love her characters one minute, and want to throw scalding water in their faces the next. As was definitley the case with both Gerick and Xan.

Despite an undeniable pull towards one another, Trinity and Gerick have a shaky connection at best. Gerick is unrelenting and demanding, not to mention constantly slutting around with gypsy-whore Onyx right in front of her! (In true Sheehan fashion, she gives it to you like it is without the sugar-coating, and if you don't like it, too bad!) You would think after realizing Trinity is destroyed over seeing Gerick and Onyx shamelessly mauling each other, this would be Gerick's cue to feel bad, stop repeating his mistakes and go begging for forgiveness on his knees to Trin, right?! Hells no! He follows up his bad behavior with snarky comments and selfishly blames his sexual trysts with Onyx on Trinity because she won't give in to his repeated attempts to seduce her.

Enter Xan. Beautiful, bronze, dread-head Xan.... Ahhh. Most cliche romance novels would have Xan entering stage left, saving the day and sweeping said damsel in distress off her feet, but no... frustratingly, that wasn't the case, and again, I love Sheehan for not going that route with her characters. Xan humiliates Trinity and makes her feel like an inadequate child while attempting to train her to fight and defend herself against the Skin Eaters since she doesn't have magic to defend herself like the others (and neither does Xan, but he's still an uber badass). Trinity is naturally drawn to him, but some stupid gypsy repellant Gerick instills upon them prohibits Trinity from deriving any pleasure from physical contact with Xan, which is a catalyst for both sexually frustrating, yet surprisingly HOT scenes.

Xan and Gerick predictably fight over and compete for Trinity in true caveman, er... gypsy fashion. Gorilla-like chest pounding ensues. You think I'm joking? Oh, that's right, I left out the part where gypsy men are allowed to 'claim' women (as early as 13 if they want), by dragging them, kicking and screaming, into their trailer for a few days, resulting in a Romani-recognized 'marriage.' There is something obviously disturbing about that, but Sheehan has a way of justifying their actions by offering glimpses into gypsy life as this dysfunctional but tight-knit community where options are limited, stakes are high, and competition is brutal (it's like The Bachelor/Bachelorette, but with a bunch of drunk, dysfunctional, magic-wielding gypsies). Fidelity is almost a joke when it comes to simply dating, but those who are loyal are fiercely so. Readers will have their hearts torn between Gerick and Xan, and the lengths they both go to, the sacrifices they both make, to keep her happy and safe.

I loved being caught up in the gypsy camp with these characters, including Becky (Trin's permiscuous BFF), Shandor, Hockey, the Horvath triplets, and even the spiteful bitch Onyx, who all added such dimension and layers to the complicated relationships among the clan. The Soul Mate is a story about a dystopian world, where the laws of the gypsies are ingrained in their culture. It's not about who you want to be with, but who you were born to be with. The Soul Mate is a story about risking everything in exchange for deciding who you want to be with. The price of free will comes at a great cost and fighting fate proves to have dire consequences.

I first read The Soul Mate last summer, and I only purchased it because it was highly recommended by members in one of my reading groups. I wasn’t a big fan of paranormal, fantasy, or post-apocalyptic books, so I shouldn’t have liked this book because it contains all those ingredients, so someone please explain how I ended up loving this book. I was hooked within a few pages, and then I wanted someone to slap me for not reading this book sooner. I devoured this book like a Skin Eater stranded on an island with super models, I couldn’t get enough. The Soul Mate is the first book in The Holy Trinity series; the story is full of magic, history, skin eating beings, and romance. The modern day story takes place after most of the human race is eradicated by creatures called Skin Eaters, a cross between vampires and zombies. The story follows a clan of Gypsies settled in the Catskills region; they are the only people that appear to fend off the Skin Eaters. Unknown to the non-gypsy (Gaje) population, Gypsies have been dabbling in white magic for centuries, but kept the secret heavily guarded from the rest of the world. Inside the Gypsy clan is a recently rescued Gaje (non-gypsy) female, Trinity. New to the Gypsy way of life and magic, Trinity soon finds that her path was destined to cross with that of the clan’s most powerful, Gerik. However Trinity, not being informed of the importance of her predestined future with Gerik, turns around and falls in love with bad boy Gypsy, Xan. If a love triangle isn’t bad enough, Trinity finds out that not only was she supposed to be with Gerik, but that she was born to be his soul mate. The romance isn’t sappy, it’s mostly about predestination vs. free will, and it contains angst, bitterness, and more broken hope than a country music album. Although this story contains a love triangle, I don’t classify the book as romance, rather a paranormal/fantasy, post-apocalyptic book containing romance.

As I mentioned in the beginning of my review, I read this book nearly a year ago, but recently re-read the book during a discussion with other fans of this series. Re-reading this book has opened my eyes to passages or comments that I overlooked during the first reading. Situations that I thought I understood, I looked at them differently after the second read. This book definitely needs to be read more than once, but I have to admit that I was more than glad to read this story again. The story involves several characters, so it easy to overlook a pertinent piece of information. What separates this book from most other books is the writing style of the author. The author doesn’t lead the reader down a particular path; she lets the readers choose the path. Ms. Sheehan throws in history and hints, so as the reader is going down one path, if you will take notice, you may find yourself deciding to go down another path. Madeline Sheehan, you opened me up to a new genre. I opened this book so that I could prove to my book club friends that I wouldn’t like it, but in the process fell in love with The Holy Trinity series and a love for a different genre.

The book is soooooo much better than the blurb/description of it! I decided to read this only because I fell in love with the author's other book Undeniable. While the description of the book didn't appeal to me, I figured if I loved her other one then this one was probably a good read also. Yeah, I took a gamble and thank the Lord it paid off! Its not anything like Undeniable. They are 2 completely different books. Almost as if a different author wrote one. But, I still loved this book. It has magic, soulmates, paranormal, love triangle, quirky characters and excellent dialogue!
There were a few issues for me that caused me to only give it 4 stars. The editing job was horrendous at times. I would have to reread sentences to figure it out. Also, there were times it seemed the author didn't feel like adding an explanation or elaborating. I don't like things being laid out profusely, but certain aspects needed to be explained or elongated some. Things were a little too choppy and skipped over periodically. There were also some description mistakes. Example: the main character is described as having flaming red hair like her Irish father, but a few pages later someone comments on how pretty her black hair is. Did she dye it and we, the reader, was supposed to figure that out? Was the person commenting color blind? Or was it an actual mistake by the author? I don't know. But, it's frustrating regardless. And lastly, there were a lot of names and it became difficult to keep up with who was who. For the first part of the book I tried to keep up, but then I gave up and just enjoyed the story. Not remembering exactly who was who or whose parent/child/grandparent was whose did not take away from the story. And maybe it seemed like a lot of names because they aren't names I'm familiar with. Who knows? But, not remembering does not affect the story.
Overall, an excellent story. Well worth overlooking the few flaws! I have already purchased the second in the series and will begin reading it tonight.

Recommended by Amy and others from Maryse's Book Blog!  And yeah, I'd had it for a while, just couldn't get to it.

This was a totally different book for me.  The end of the world, gypsies with magic, danger on the outside, dragons, wow!

Apparently, Trinity is promised to Gerik in marriage, but he manages to push her away and does his own thing with some bitchface whore that I couldn't stand.  This was his release I guess while he waited for Trinity to let him in.  There was always a connection with Trinity and Gerik, electrifying to the touch, but Trinity held back (maybe because of the whore).   Also, she wasn't a gypsy, and had no magic, so that left her somewhat in the dark as to the secrets and life of the gypsies.

Xan.......oh God my heart!  I LOVED XAN!  I couldn't get enough of him.  There was a connection between him and Trinity also, but Gerik (the prick) used magic so that whenever Trinity was near or touched Xan, it was almost painful and unwanted.  That pissed me off!!! Dammit, Gerik!  You can f*&k around, but Trinity can't!!!! I don't think so!!  So, when Trinity pushes herself to work through that ache when with Xan, she basically breaks the spell.  Yay Xan!!! I love you!

This book took such a crazy turn that it had my head spinning!

Now, do I want to start the next book in the series?  I don't know!  I'm kinda scared and if things don't end up how I want (Trinity and Xan HEA), I'm going to be soooooo MAD!!!!!

Disappointing.

I read this book as soon as I discovered who the author was, her Undeniable series is fantastic and I love fantasy books so I was all set, I had such high hopes as I started this especially since most of the reviews were good but I have to say this book didn't really work for me, why, well I think the main problem was that a great portion of the book was in my mind unnecessary, a few words would have sorted everything out and I just couldn't believe that it was dragged out to the extend that it was, without giving anything away and spoiling the book it's hard to give details and I know the Roma secrets had to be kept but due to the nature of their relationship, which was evident to everybody with magic a slight exception could have been made and everything sorted out especially considering what's at stake.
I know this book was free and for that I feel a little ungrateful but I was so annoyed as I was reading it that, well less would have been more and this could have been a shorter but so much better book, I liked the idea and the characters except for Gerik's love of the word "yeah" that I could have done without.

It is official... I will read anything this damn author puts out! This is the 2nd book of hers that I have read and I was hooked from beginning to end yet again.
The story flowed together and was told in a way that didnt leave me confused as to what was going on or why certain things were happening, the characters were unique and the love triangle wasnt overwhelming. No angst or heart stopping moments that made me want to pull my hair out & for that I am grateful!
This is the type of PNR that I enjoy reading and I can not wait to continue with this series.

RATING: Somewhere Between 3.5 and 4 HEARTS

Overall, this was such a unique story. I loved the PNR aspect of it, and the twists and turns. The romance is hot, the characters are likeable, and the danger is constant --> What is not to like?? But...(there is always a but)...I did not like Gerik. I could not stand him, nor see his way of things. I wanted him out of the picture whenever he was in it. He rubbed me the wrong way....but....Xan...oh man oh man...I adored him! He is badass, and everything alpha. *swoon* <3

The Soul Mate is a perfect blend of urban fantasy, paranormal, and hot sexy asshole. I fell for Xan behind the barrel of a gun and he's held me captive ever since. But Gerik is the other half of my whole and without him I feel all kinds of wrong. Madeline hit this out of the park with an elaborate and perfect weave of past and present story lines and an intense plot that kept me guessing. I would recommend everyone give this story a chance! You'll surprise yourself.

Not sure how to rate this. I’ve had this book on my tbr pile for a while now and just picked it up at random. There were things that I really liked and some things that I didn’t. I’m going for 2.5 stars but since the third book isn’t out yet I probably won’t continue with the series.

Review to come.. 4,1/2 stars. I'm addicted to a new drug called "Madeline Sheehan."

Originally posted at www.Addicted2Heroines.com

I am addicted to a new drug, and its name is "Madeline Sheehan." It's no secret that I devoured and adored Sheehan's Undeniable earlier this year. I just had to go out and buy any other book that she had written. This brought me to her paranormal series, The Holy Trinity. While not as gritty or raw as Undeniable, this book sucked me in, pulled me under and left me gasping for air just the same.

The world as we know it has been destroyed. A plague has lead to an apocalyptic scene. Trinity is a 22-year-old girl who somehow survived the initial onslaught of flesh eating monsters and found herself in the middle of a clan of Gypsies. The Gypsies have magic - enough to set up wards around their camp to keep the vampires out. Trinity is a relatively innocent non-Gypsy (Gaje) and seems to have a thing for the tall, blond viking named Gerik. Although Gerik is drawn to Trinity, she refuses to give him a real chance, mostly because of his never ending tryst with a fellow Gypsy girl. Trinity, although she tries to fight it, feels an unnatural pull to Gerik. Something takes over her mind when she touches him and leads to lusty business.

"You feel that, yeah?" He leaned down and pressed his lips to mine. His kiss was like a shock to my already overloaded system. My heart was thumping hard and fast against my chest, feeling like, at any moment, it might explode. "That's me inside you, Trinity. I've always been there and always will be."

After a vampire attack, Trinity feels that she needs to learn how to defend herself. Since she avoids Gerik, she asked another male, Xan (who happens to only be half-Gypsy), to teach her how to shoot firearms. While working together, Trinity and Xan develop an attraction for one another, yet Trinity is unable to act on that attraction. Magic is keeping her bound to Gerik. After feeling betrayed one too many times by Gerik, Trinity forces a connection with Xan, which leads to happiness for Xan and Trinity, and lonliness and depression for Gerik.

"I've seen the way you look at me, like you're soaking wet and need me to wring you out until you're good and dry."

I don't know how Madeline does it, but she makes me feel ridiculously close to her characters. I felt personally affronted when Trinity found Gerik with another woman. I felt sick at the way Gerik chooses to handle Xan and Trinity's relationship. And I felt giddy when Xan and Trinity became a couple. I love all of these characters, as well and the side characters. Although there were parts of this story where I didn't like Xan's and Gerik's behavior, this is one love triangle where I can't decide which guy I like better.

The world building in this book is excellent. Sheehan is able to describe the Gypsy magic flawlessly. She creates a world full of magic and intrigue, where anything seems possible. I especially enjoyed the flashbacks to the previous millenium. I loved the story of Treime and Emilian and the way this book began and ended.

This book ends with a cliff hanger that makes me want to immediately begin book 2 of this series, My Soul to Take. However, knowing Sheehan's propensity for angst, I think I might wait until book 3, My Heart and Soul, is released sometime this Spring. I don't think my heart could stand the drama and the wait!

I absolutely love Madeline Sheehan's books...she writes in such a way that just speaks...NO screams out to my heart and all the inner feelings I have about life and love. I have never read a book quite like this one...it is completely out of the normal genre that I usually read, but being such a huge fan of hers (and the fact she put it on Smashwords for FREE) convinced me to give it a try.
WOW...WOW...WOW...what an exciting and beautiful and horrible and sexy and mystical journey that was...and without a doubt, it left me wanting to read more...but OMG...it made me feel so many emotions and that last freaking chapter...made me bawl my eyes out!!
This was a completely original dystopian world where fantasy lives amidst creatures with sharp claws and teeth and everyday is a fight for survival while magic serves as a protector.
Trinity, Zan and Gerik make up the unbelievably sexy as hell love triangle...Trinity and Gerik "bonded" as soulmates and Zan, the one who loves her unconditionally.
There are so many characters in this story and it keeps going back and forth between the past and present day...you really need a score sheet or cliff notes to keep up at times, not to mention all the Romanian and Slovenian phrases which are sometimes easy to figure out but at others it's good to check the provided glossary so you don't miss a thing!
This is not only a battle of survival for all in this society or between the two men fighting for Trinity's love, but rather a strong woman determined to fight for the right to make her own choices about her own future...without magic or interference from the Gypsy camp who have taken her in.
If you liked Sheehan's biker series, you will love this one as well...the setting may be different but there are an abundance of hot, bossy alpha males, interfering bitches (I just wanted to wring Onyx's damn neck!), a real sense of family ties and loyalty, plus an amazing mix of scorching romance and blood curdling action!

I really don't get this book:

“Gerik, her savior, a six-foot-four-inch Scandinavian Gypsy, takes her back to his magically protected Gypsy camp where she discovers a whole new way of life that she never knew existed – as well as a whole new set of problems.”

1. Gerik is six-foot-four-inches tall with blond hair. A real Viking. Complete with braided long hair:

No other description is given. We just have this tall, muscled and blond cave man gifted with some ominous magical abilities and in need of a soul mate. And please a Romanian gypsy like Xan with Dreads? This is more like reality:

2. A lone Scandinavian gypsy in a gypsy camp of Romanian origin speaking Romanian. Maybe the author confused it a little bit because Romanian and Romani sound so similar. BUT between the gypsy’s own language (“Romani”: Romani is an Indo-Aryan language with strong Balkan, and especially Greek, influence. It is the only New-Indo-Aryan language spoken exclusively outside of the Indian subcontinent.) and the language of the people living in Romania is the same enormous difference as between people from India and the Native American Indians. And the usage of Romanian is wrong, too:
“stimati dumnezeu ne salva” means “Holy God save us!” or some such und not “the boy has horns”

I just hate it when authors don’t even spend an hour or two on researching facts.

This book is not for me. DNF

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved this book. It's been on my TBR for quite some time and I'm kicking myself for not reading it sooner. I'm a big fan of paranormal and dystopian. Normally the author takes quite some time to give us a visual of the world they created but Madeline accomplished this effortlessly and did it while letting us get to know the characters so I was never bored. This book doesn't have your typical love triangle either. One guy she's in love with, one guy she's meant to be with. Both guys had likeable qualities but I have a feeling I'm going to be on Team Trinity in this series. I'm diving right into book 2 to find out!

I went into this with an open mind, lets be honest, I just wanted my Madeline fix and couldn't wait any longer for her next book.

I thought that I had seen all the spins on vampires (?)magic (?) romance (?), but I hadn't. Not by a long shot.

This book introduced me to a whole new dystopian world which was not only believable (I know, I know) but tragically beautiful. With interesting and believable--if not fucked up--characters.

If you're looking for something a bit different on the dystopian front, then this is a definite reccommend.
