One night of fierce passion and unbound pleasure leaves two strangers craving much more in Lavinia Kent’s sumptuous novel of sensual discovery.

The time has come for the widow Louisa, Lady Brookingston, to move on, but she refuses to remarry at the cost of shaming her late husband’s memory. Their six years together were wedded bliss—even if a war injury prevented him from fulfilling his marital duties. Only one woman can help Madame Rouge, the discreet proprietress of a club where London’s elite explore their wildest fantasies.

Geoffrey, the Marquess of Swanston, has no intention of agreeing to deflower an anonymous virgin. But when Madame Rouge tempts him with the absolute power he’ll have over a woman who knows nothing of carnal delights, he’s intrigued. Control is the one thing he cannot resist—and control is what he loses during his night with the blindfolded beauty. He longs to take her further, to leave his mark upon her perfect behind, but the mystery woman refuses to see him again. Instead Geoffrey reluctantly agrees to take a wife, the widow of his dear friend, Lord Brookingston—fating them both to a wicked surprise.

I live in Washington, DC with my husband, kids, two cats and a changing menagerie of other small beasts.

I worked in both the arts and in the business world before giving into my love of story telling after the birth of my oldest -- although it wasn't until after the birth of my youngest when I suddenly had full-time childcare that it all came together for me.

I love discussing books -- almost any books at any time.

One of my great joys is having my children get old enough that we can all read the same things and talk. I am so happy that YA is the flourishing world that it is.

And of course I love Romance. I started back with Kathleen Woodiwiss and Johanna Lindsay and have never given them up since -- although there were a few slow spots along the way.

The first third of this book was lovely, the second third a little too improbable, and the third third extremely upsetting. I'm mainly leaving this review because no one else seems to have mentioned how violent and revolting the story gets -- so maybe it's just me -- and I would definitely have liked more of a warning.

The BDSM aspects are otherwise quite mild (although not completely consensual) and the long initial encounter between two strangers is far more engrossing than I would've ever have expected chapters of sex to be. But my stomach was too thoroughly turned for me to leave the story feeling good about it.

If anyone is keeping a record of longest sex scenes in romance novels, I think Mastering the Marquess is a strong contender. The first sexual encounter between our hero and heroine spans 7 chapters: Chapters 3-9, but, as I read through it, it didn't feel overlong or over-extended. I love how thoroughly Lavinia Kent explored this moment, making it clear how important and pivotal this scene is to Louisa and Geoffrey's love story. I think it was wonderful how Geoffrey and Louisa's love developed out of very honest conversation, shared intimacy, and, perhaps, a mutual curiosity.

"Are you ready to proceed?" he asked.

She tensed, bit harder at her lip. "I don't know."

"I will promise not to laugh again -- unless you tickle me. I should warn you: I do not like to be tickled." He made his voice severe.

"I don't think I care for it either, although it has been a decade or more since anyone has tickled me."

"We agree to no tickling then, although some things may be ticklish. You will have to tell me if it is too much."

"I agree to no tickling."

Good, she'd agreed to proceed without even realising it. "Should we have any other rules?"

"I don't know -- I think that should be clear by now. I know nothing."

Damn. She sounded unsure again. "We can keep it simple. All you have to do is tell me if you want me to slow down or stop."

"I can manage that. And will you do the same?"

As I write this review,I'm consciously avoiding the term "dark" to keep from sounding redundant, but there's no other word to use to describe the encounters of our hero and heroine: together they test the boundaries of pain/pleasure and try to define their relationship on their own terms. A necessary thing because Louisa and Geoffrey are members of "Polite Society" and such things are never spoken about -- Louisa frets about her sexual awakening and struggles with questions about what is proper or permitted.

There's a point in Mastering the Marquess where I felt Lavinia Kent could've ended the story, and it would have been satisfying, but it would also mean answering only half of Louisa's question, and this is, perhaps, why the author decided to push forward and continue to tell the story of Louisa and Geoffrey. After this point, the story takes a dark turn: exposing the lengths of cruelty that the villain of the story, Countess Ormande, was willing to go through for Geoffrey and pushed Louisa ask if is she willing to go that far for the sake of her love for him. It's at that moment that I came to admire the heroine because, despite her innocence and lack of knowledge/experience about Geoffrey's lifestyle, she knew herself and knew her own limits. It takes a brave and confident woman to take a stand, and Louisa is that woman.

Geoffrey's story is a quest for acceptance. While he has embraced the dark side of his desires, he wonders if he could find a woman who would embrace and accept him for who he is. He straddles both sides of himself, wondering if he is the straightlaced gentleman his father and sister see him, or if he is the dominant lover who takes pleasure in the darker aspects of sex? It's interesting how he was able to be and enjoy both with Louisa, but, he worried that he might break her, so he kept controlled himself. I wondered if he would have been content living and barely skimming the surface of the deeper aspects of his desires. The final encounter with Countess Ormande and Louisa also addresses this.

Unfortunately, when the story took this dark turn, it also took an uneven tone and an abrupt change in pace, which I thought it was a bit jarring and confusing (and it took me a while to get my bearings). While it gave the story a definitive resolution (and answered all of Louisa and Geoffrey's questions), I thought it had taken away a lot of the story's original charm, luster and momentum.

Mastering the Marquess is Book 1 in Lavinia Kent's Bound and Determined series. As mentioned on the author's website, this is "an erotic romance intended for mature audiences."

Very interesting read!! Its been years since I have read Lavinia Kent, but this surprised me in how well I liked the tone of it. Even though the first bedroom scene together is very long, it still has a more "romance novel" feel to it then a erotic feel which is what I was expecting. Both character were utterly likable and sweet at times.

Part One: Great

Mastering the Marquess started off as charming romance. And what a unique premise! Louisa was never able to have sex with her husband John due to his war injuries. Now that she's a widow, she feels that she must lose her virginity before remarrying or risk being socially ostracized and her husbands' memory being shamed. Far fetched? Sure. But the chemistry between Geoffrey and Louisa was there. The romance scenes were sweet and sexy and whole vibe was working!

Part Two: Good

The pace of the story didn't work as well in Part Two. Parts were, dare I say, dragging? I did like that the relationship between Geoffrey and Louisa progressed in a very natural fashion. Their mutual realization that they loved each other and weren't just romanticizing their first night together was quite nice to read.

Part Three: Clusterfuck

What the fucking fuck happened? It was such a nice story! Then Part Three ruined it. A totally left field plot development, uneven tone, and some really gross actions on the parts of several characters left me deeply unsatisfied and wishing I would have stopped after Part 1.

Get ready for a majorly pissed off and spoilery rant!

If not for the ginormous disaster that was Part Three, I'd say this was a successful sexy historical romance. Unfortunately, Part Three exists, and it dragged the whole story down a peg with it.

Spoiler Ahead This was a pretty good book that I liked although I felt it was a little too long. The time has come for the widow Louisa, Lady Brookingston, to move on although she doesn't want to remarry because she doesn't want to shame her late husband she was married for six years and due to her husbands war injury he was unable to consummate the marriage when means she is still a virgin. Louisa goes to Madame Rouge for help. Madame Rouge tempts Geoffrey, the Marquess of Swanston into deflowering Louisa. After the deed is done she refuses to see him again so he agrees to take a wife who was a widow of a dear friend Lord Brookingston and both of them get a surprise. The sex scenes between these two were hot Geoffrey who demands order and control in his life and BDSM in the bedroom. I really liked Louisa she was smart and independent and determined not to settle. I really liked both of the MC's in this book. The book also took a weird turn in the second half when Louisa was kidnapped and tortured sexually I found it to be a little unnecessary and too long and I still gave it 4 stars. This was my first time reading this author this is the first book in a new series to me. The book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Lavinia Kent is one of my autobuy author for me. Mastering the Marquess has some erogenous scenes where you can feel and smell everything Mrs. Kent describes. Louisa, Lady Brookingston asks for help from Madame Rouge. She does not want to be a virgin wife anymore. She wants to remarry, but not shame her late husband’s memory. Madame Rouge is sympathetic to Louise's plight and she thinks she has the perfect candidate. Geoffrey, the Marquess of Swanston needs to have control outside and inside the bedroom. When madam asks him for a favor, Geoffrey could not resist. It is a great book about discovery and new experiences. I honestly could not put this sexual stimulating book down. I can't wait for her next book. . I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley for an honest review.

Wowza...so I only recommend this book if you are ready to go full steam ahead! ;)

Mastering the Marquess is a story about a woman who does her best to honor her husbands memory as she searches for a new one, and a man who is, essentially, prepared to live two different lives in an effort to sate his desires.

I have to say right off the bat that this author has an amazing gift for detailing a scene and setting it up to make it feel like the reader is in the room watching as everything unfolds. She was so masterful there were times I felt like a voyeur.

I liked the main characters in this book. They were on an even playing field in that they were both so preoccupied with how things should be that they didn't realize how things could be. Louisa was a very likable heroine. She genuinely loved her first husband and took drastic measures to ensure his reputation remain intact even after death. While trying to be timid and bashful at times (as society demanded), who she was always shone through and she was a determined and, at times, feisty heroine. I enjoyed Geoffrey's character, as well. He knew marriage and an heir were his duty to his family, but he was torn between propriety and desire, certain that his two worlds could not collide. And though his marriage was his duty, he didn't treat his wife as though she was a burden.

I really enjoyed the pacing of this story and the way things unfolded. Watching Geoffrey's world get turned upside down and being introduced to a way of life he'd never considered was fun to see, and I loved witnessing Louisa's journey of self-discovery. These characters really complemented each other, and they both brought out facets of the others personality that had never been brought to light before.

The chemistry between Louisa and Geoffrey was established from the moment they 'met,' and it only escalated from there. The love scenes in this book were incredibly intense and sexy.

The reader does have to suspend disbelief a bit, as it's hard to imagine Geoffrey didn't recognize Louisa from their original encounter. But it makes for a fun story, and it wasn't something that bothered me.

Props to the author...

Overall, this was a steamy, interesting read with great characters. I highly recommend this book if you like erotica or historical romance with a suspenseful twist.

Mastering The Marquess by Lavinia Kent is an Erotic Historical Romance.
OUTSTANDING!
I don't normally read Historical Romances. I have read a few, some good, most stilted and boring. I can not say that about this book. It was amazingly well written. It was never boring. Fast paced, the words and conversations flowed with ease.
The main characters, Louisa and Geoffrey, were well defined. They were both interesting and complex. I found Louisa to be brave and strong. She knew what she wanted and did what she needed to do to accomplish her goals.
Though Geoffrey showed and taught Louisa about passion, it was Louisa who taught Geoffrey how to let go of things you can't control. I would love to say more, but I don't want to give the story away.
This story is very provocative and most definitely mature.
The love making scenes were truly EROTIC. They were sensuous, hot and risqué. I warn you now, you WILL 'Fan Yourself, and gasp 'OH MY'. You will definitely feel 'The Heat'!
There was often amusing scenes that made me grin. Others that filled me with dread of what may happen. It kept me on my toes and completely engrossed. I could not put it down.
I highly recommend this book to all Adult Romance Lovers.

A super steamy, yet delightfully sweet read, Mastering the Marquess was a wonderful historical romance. I really liked this book. It was a lovely, enjoyable read.

Louisa was a wonderful heroine. She was a perfect lady, but a lady who wasn't afraid to step out of the bounds of propriety when it was called for. And she might act like a quiet lady, but if she got mad, all bets were off. I thought she was a lovely heroine and I really liked her.

Geoffrey was also great. After living with his careless parents who would sooner ruin the family name and fortune than get their act together, he had an obsession with maintaining control. But, he was also very sweet and protective over those he loved. He was just wonderful, other than a couple of times I wanted to whack him upside the head for being oblivious, and I adored him.

The romance was very hot. The chemistry between these two was off the charts and there was a ton of steaminess to keep you fanning your face. And they were also very sweet together. They understood and accepted each other and were unwilling to let anything come between them. I thought they were a perfect couple.

The plot was well paced and I was kept interested the entire way through. I really enjoyed the story and the ending was lovely.

Mastering the Marquess was a wonderful historical romance. It was very spicy, but also sweet and an enjoyable read. Romance lovers, if you want something with some heat, then this is a book you'll want to check out.

Very HOT!!

This book surprised me. I expected it to be all erotica and was very pleased to find it was actually a very good book - with a lot of hot, steamy, had to stop and fan myself love scenes.

I might be alone in my opinion, but I felt this book was more about two people finding love and discovering their true selves than about sex.

Geoffrey (Charles) and Louisa (Grace) are wonderful leads. They shared a night of anonymous passion, that touched them both, but that neither thought would be repeated. I will admit that I did expect at least one of them to figure out who the other was much faster than they did. But this story starts out fast and hot and doesn't slow down or cool down until the last page.

I thought the writing was superb, the plot stayed on point, the villainess was truly evil and the secondary characters added to but never distracted me from the true focus of the book - which was the relationship between Geoffrey and Louisa.

I would highly recommend this book - but be warned - it is not for those who don't care for explicit love scenes.

GAWD Almighty I loooooooooooove me some Historical smuttiness! LOL
This little tale was sexy, steamy, and completely erotic! The passion between H/h was off the charts and I REALLY love the story itself! Both the H/h were very well developed and likable. The sex scenes were written sensually and tastefully. The story held a good pace and kept the pages turning. I read it in just one sitting!
I am SO looking forward to more from Ms Kent and from this series!

There's a good idea behind this book. Marriage of convenience, with husband inducting wife into a (relatively mild) BDSM sex life, all in a Regency context. Frankly, on paper, this pushes all my buttons. The execution, however, didn't work very well for me. The initial (sexual) encounter between h/h is pretty good but from there on out it didn't stick the landing. The sex was repetitive & some of the words to describe the sex grated. There's a murderous ex-lover who turns up & is unnecessarily sexually sadistic in her ridiculous overblown rage. I skimmed the last third. It was all just a bit mediocre for me.

I really enjoyed this book. This is only the second historical romance I have ever read but now I really want to read more. This book was really hot and very erotic. I really liked the connection between the main characters and how they end up in each others lives. Their first meeting is one of the best introductions I have ever read - sexy! Looking forward to reading more in this series!

The title isn't kidding

There was more to this book than I expected. It had wonderful characters and a very interesting premiss. There was a lot of detail in this book so it would be for adults only.

Even with the graphic details I enjoyed this book.

Mastering the Marquess
is an erotic historical romance (strictly M/F) in which a young widow’s sexual awakening at the hands (and other body parts!) of a man who values control in all aspects of his life proves to him that maybe allowing someone get close to him isn’t such a bad thing.

Lady Louisa Brookingston is that rare thing – a virgin widow. Her late husband – her childhood sweetheart – was badly injured in the war, so badly that he was left unable to perform his husbandly duties. Louisa is still young enough to have a family of her own and wants to remarry, but doesn’t want to tarnish her husband’s reputation by going to her second husband in her untried state. She seeks help from a discreet madam – Madame Rouge - whose select, high-class brothel she knew her husband had visited regularly during their marriage. Louisa wants to divest herself of her maidenhead, and wants to do so discreetly before she begins to look about her for a suitable husband.

Madame has just the man - one she knows will be considerate and sure to give the virginal Louisa the best night of her life. Geoffrey Danser, Marquess of Swanston, is a man who exerts an iron control over all facets of his life – and especially enjoys doing so in the bedroom. At first, he is disinclined to deflower a virgin but Madame entices him by reminding him of how much he enjoys instructing his partners in the delights of bedsport, and by suggesting how much more exciting he will find it to initiate a partner who has no idea of what is “normal” and what isn’t.

The assignation is arranged. Neither party will be made privy to the other’s identity, and will be masked or blindfolded during their encounter in order to ensure their anonymity. After her initial nervousness, Louisa realises the inability to see her partner is strangely freeing, and finds herself at last able to indulge her sexual curiosity. Geoffrey finds himself responding to her in a way he hadn’t anticipated and the pair discovers a completely unexpected companionship which leaves them unable to forget their night together.

Louisa can now embark upon her search for a husband in earnest and Geoffrey can go back to his highly controlled life and his discreet sexual liaisons – except for the fact that his father’s latest ridiculous scheme sees him needing to find a large sum of money quickly if he is to avert disaster – and the only way he can lay his hands on a fortune that fast is to marry one.

Geoffrey has the reputation in society of being starchily proper, exceedingly dull and not at all good with women, so when he takes an interest in Lady Brookingston, nobody – and certainly not Louisa, to whom he shows nothing but the strictest propriety – expects him to make her an offer of marriage. When he does, he is completely honest as to his motivations, and Louisa, who realises that admiring a man’s honesty and good-looks is probably not the best way to select a husband, finds herself so drawn to him that she accepts him nonetheless.

This is an erotic romance, so there is obviously an emphasis on the sexual encounters that take place between the hero and heroine. These are well written and definitely hot, but the author has also placed great importance on the emotional side of the story, so that the reader is not just faced with a string of sex scenes linked by very little plot. She develops the romance between Geoffrey and Louisa well, beginning on their very first night together, and continuing as they navigate through the early days of their marriage.

I confess that I haven’t read a large number of erotic romances, but it seems that an historical one is unavoidably going to bring modern sensibilities to the sexual aspects of the story. Most young women at this period were kept largely in ignorance of sexual matters, and other than the “lie back and think of England” speech on their wedding day, such things were not discussed. Louisa is one such woman, although she is clearly open-minded and very curious about what goes on between a man and a woman. That said, I wasn’t completely convinced she would have been so eager to understand why her husband visited a brothel when they were married, and to understand Geoffrey’s desire – his need – for control. Fortunately for her, Geoffrey is a man who is willing to talk about such things, which is another aspect of the book I enjoyed. He is a man who keeps the truth about himself very much under wraps – so much so that even his family isn’t sure he’s ever had a sexual relationship! – and for him to be so honest with Louisa is another indication of the strength of the connection between them.

The book is divided into three parts, and is well-paced overall. The first sexual encounter is romantic as well as steamy, and Ms Kent keeps the emotional connection between the protagonists to the fore of the story. Their meetings in society, when they can see each other but know little about each other, make for an interesting parallel to their earlier intimate encounter, when they could not see, but began to know each other on the inside. The early days of their marriage suffer from a serious lack of communication, but as things begin to improve, the author throws a spanner into the works in the form of the somewhat deranged Countess Ormonde, a former lover of Swanston’s who hasn’t forgiven him for discarding her when her sexual proclivities and penchant for violence went too far for his tastes. And you know what they say about a woman scorned…

Mastering the Marquess is an enjoyable read featuring two well-drawn and well-matched central characters. I would probably have rated it slightly higher had the final part of the book not thrown itself off a cliff into the sea of melodrama, but if you can get past that, and fancy a steamy story in which there is as much of an emphasis on the romance as the sex, you could do worse than give this a try.

Edit: Well, a year and a half later I finally finished this book. I guess I was just “in the mood” haha. I’ve come to the decision that I was too hard on my initial 2 star assessment. She’s a great writer and the sex was hot, with a good dose of feelings mixed in. So I’ve bumped it to 3 stars. I’d say my loss of 2 stars had more to do with personal taste than anything.

A couple notes about the sex. There was one scene that was so, so hot and the hero is thinking the whole time about how he wants to fuck her. God, I was dying to read that. And then when he reaches for his pants buttons the scene just stops. Damn! That is cruel and usual punishment, especially considering this is erotica. I was angry.

The final sex scene was also great. But I personally found it unsatisfying that he never lets her touch him. I don’t know how a person could ever be satisfied in a relationship like that. I just wish there had been some give and take. I know this is a dom/sub thing and that my personal opinion here probably lies way outside the bounds of how those relationships work. But it felt like something was missing. To have a man like him at your disposal and never be able to touch him. I missed it.

But I get that is probably perfect for some, so I’m not saying that as it being bad all around. Just mentioning it so people know what to expect. Some might read this part of the review and decide that’s exactly what they want. And others will know if it will leave them wanting. It left me wanting.

Original review:
I gave up on this half way through. I liked the idea behind the story but it had some major flaws. The opening love scene dragged way too long. And that’s a lot coming from me because I like a lot of sex in my books. It wasn’t romantic for the most part but it was sexy, so I guess it just depends on your interests.

I found it a bit unbelievable that it took so long for them to figure out who each other was after their first encounter. I was excited to see what happened after they figured it out but the love scene where they finally do just kind of ruined it for me.

The hero in this book is a Dom. I don’t typically read BDSM books. I simply don’t gravitate towards them. It can be kind of interesting but in this case it was kind of boring. This hero wanted to heroine to remain absolutely still during sex. Probably the most mild form of domination there is. But then when they’re married and he doesn’t know who she is, he is frustrated by her just laying still in bed. Then just as you think it’s going to get interesting again because she asserts herself, he goes right back to telling her not to move.

I kept waiting for the roles to reverse. For him to discover he liked something different. That was the scene where it should have happened but it didn’t and I got bored with her lack of participation. You can only read so many sex scenes where a woman just lays there. God. Boring.

Perhaps this changes later in the book but I didn’t want to give it a chance. I read some spoilers and didn’t care for the direction of the book. I started skipping ahead a bit and the part I read about in the spoilers seems to drag on for quite a long time. Considering how long the first sex scene was, I didn’t feel like trudging through it. I wanted to read the hero and heroine together and it didn’t seem it was going to give me that.

One thing I did like about this book was how the hero seemed to be such a different person to the rest of the word compared to how he was in the bedroom. I found the dichotomy appealing. I was interested to see where that went but ultimately the book lost me.

If you’re someone who wants erotica without much romance this will be a good book for you. If you’re very submissive, this might turn you on. If you want sex and romance, this probably isn’t going to cut it.

3.5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads

I loved both the main characters, but I was off-put by about 90% of the supporting cast (w/the exception of Ruby & Geoffrey's father). I was immediately sucked into the book, unable to put it down for the first 30%, and then I found myself glancing down at the time left in the novel, seeing I was only 30%, 35%, 40%, and I felt like the book should have met its conclusion pages ago.

It was a discombobulating feeling; enjoying the story yet wondering why it was still happening.

The premise itself was scrumptious, and I ate it right up. This is where I was frustrated and flustered with the story. I know I sound negative, but I'm not. I was rapt, completely engrossed with the story, already handing out a 5 star, but once this was dragged out beyond measure, I lost interest. The book lost its spark. The ballroom should have been that 'climatic' moment, as both were so obsessed, how could they not recognize the scent/sound/form, and history of the other.

It was no longer an exploration of sexuality and intimacy, but one of those books with a constant stream of miscommunication and unnecessary angst, where a simple sentence cleared up the entire problem.

When they did realize the other was Grace and Charles, it was anticlimactic, as neither really said anything about it, after hundreds of pages of an angsty premise it fell flat, and the book still wasn't concluded with the conclusion of the major plot thread.

Another flaw for me was how Louisa had no one in her life. In this era, even a widow would have to have a male guardian, as women were not allowed to conduct business. I found it odd that she had no relatives or friends in her life whatsoever.

Geoffrey was such a dominant being, that I couldn't swallow the villainess getting away with anything for 2 seconds, let alone the entire book. Same with his bratty, difficult to read sister (Whom I'm sure is a future MC, but the way she was written was without any qualities to make the reader's appetite whet). That entire plot thread made me want to skip entire scenes.

I'm a sucker for an angsty, hot read, so for the most part, this book was right up my alley. Historical Romance is a guilty pleasure of mine, whether lust-filled or innocent romance. The heat, connection, and chemistry between the H & h in the beginning of the book was one of the best I've read. But as the book dwindled on, they both lost that essential spark for me.

Do I recommend this novel? YES! To those who love Historical Romance with an erotic twist. No to those who are sticklers for the rules of that era, or for those who have issues with the entire plot hinging on miscommunication and complete and utter blindness on the MCs' part.

Will I read more from this author? Yes, I'm highly looking forward to it, as I wish to see where this series is headed.

Lavinia Kent’s Mastering the Marquess boasts a tight plot and rich characterizations. Set in London, this atmospheric tale portrays the romance between Louisa, Lady Brookingston, a strong-willed widow who is still a virgin after marrying her childhood sweetheart after he returned from war with a debilitating injury, and Geoffrey, the Marquess of Swanston, who has agreed to deflower her and teach her how to perform wifely duties for a future husband. Louisa does not want to have her beloved deceased husband’s reputation soiled if a future husband finds out that she is still a virgin. She is paired with Geoffrey by a local madam that Louisa found out her husband John had visited during their marriage. She asks Madame Rouge to arrange for her to anonymously lose her virginity. The tension between the two quickly heats up, as the whole scene plays out with her blindfolded and him in a mask. Geoffrey finds himself extremely infatuated with the brave and somewhat brazen widow. He wants to see her again, but she is not interested in being a mistress. She wants a husband and children before it’s too late for her. Geoffrey does not want to be married because of his own family experience. Before they can find happiness together, they must deal with the sins of Geoffrey’s past. The romance between Geoffrey and Louisa is compelling, but what really sets this book apart is Kent’s ability to make the period come alive. With the ease of a skilled seamstress, Ms. Kent weaves in dozens of details, touching on everything from the food and room decor to the “business” of marriage during that time. Kent doesn't shy away from developing her characters either. Geoffrey emerges as a tortured but admirable hero, and even secondary figures like Geoffrey’s father, sister and "The Countess" take on a life of their own.

Their meeting that fateful night will change the course of their lives. Louisa and Geoffrey have to get past their fears and insecurities to love each other. Louisa struggles with confidence. Through Geoffrey, she learns her value as a woman. Similarly, Louisa's love eventually destroys the walls that Geoffrey has built around his heart, and brings healing to his soul.

I read this book in one night because I couldn't put it down!! I even had to re-read a few passages because I was so intrigued. Ms. Kent is willing to explore romance and sensuality in a way that very few romantic authors are willing to explore. If you're already a Lavinia Kent fan, you won't be disappointed. If you haven't read a Kent book before, you are in for a treat!!! I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

The first book in the Bound and Determined series by Lavinia Kent.

Substance meets smut (splendidly) in this entertaining and intense erotic historical.

Geoffrey, the Marquess of Swanston, likes to be in control. After enduring the effects of a bohemian childhood of no restraints, the only way he feels calm and ordered is when he has complete control over a situation. He maintains his family’s finances and landholdings after his scatterbrained and reckless father nearly ruins the family. And this control extends to his unusual sexual proclivities for dominance.
"With nobody watching it meant she was free. She could do whatever she liked and nobody would ever know."

"I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads."

This book absolutely had me in its thrall from the word go - but I did get confused by a twist, and never did understand why. I love the premise behind the story and absolutely loved the outcome, but in the middle I read on in the strong belief that it would be worth it - and it was. Looking forward to the next installments so that can be reunited with the lead characters, as they were great fun. I cannot overstate how erotic and charming Part One is - fabulous.

I enjoyed this book. The hero and heroine both like bondage. The historical details are in the background, a few mentions of dresses and parties and valets.

I liked how they talked to each other and actually worked out their issues like adults.

Negatives: There was a threat to the heroine. The hero thought he had handled it, but he had not. I did not like that part of the story and the consequences for the heroine.

There was a nice premise in the book and i could've rated it higher but the long drawn sex scenes specially the first encounter between Geoffrey and Louisa really spoiled it for me so much so that I have to skip a few pages just to get it over and done with. The mild BDSM BETWEEN H and h is not a plus points as I'm not really into this kind of thing. Overall the book was ok but cannot hold my attention for long.

Not the best BDSM I've read. While this book had its moments, at times I found myself wanting the book to move along.I enjoyed the story for the most part, but some of the sex scenes just went on and on. As far as it being a historical, Ms. Kent used some terminology that was way too modern for this time period.

Oh man this was a really good read. I loved Louisa and Geoffery's relationship. She was so innocent and he was so not. I loved how she was strong enough to be bold and be herself. Loved the chemistry.

Super-hot smutty and tastefully erotic romance. Disliked the rake-virgin dynamic but probably can't escape it in the historical ones.
