Honest, moving and compelling, this book will appeal to the young adult and the older one, too. I've had the privilege of reading the author's short stories and loved them, so I was looking forward to her debut novel. I wasn't disappointed. Blaskovic has an ability to weave heart and soul into the words she writes, pulling the reader with her every step of the way. This is a wonderful book from a talented writer. Highly recommended.
A compelling emotional roller-coaster ride and must read!
Author Eva Blaskovic drew me into the story immediately with a vivid encounter between a young science major Bret and a cellist Nicole who is practicing the final movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Bret offers tips and advice and asks for a violin. Nicole can't believe his proficiency with the instrument, and his musical insights. As the story progresses we learn he is a gifted musician with perfect pitch but no formal musical training.
Bret struggles with self-doubt and guilt brought on by the loss of his father and charges made against him by his uncle and brother.
Bret works part-time at a biomedical lab on campus and soon learns that his boss, an acclaimed surgeon, is also Nicole's father. Before long Bret and Nicole develop a strong attraction for one another and this is encouraged by the family. Not only that, but Bret is encouraged to discover outlets for his latent talent and it becomes clear where his true destiny lies.
The story is superbly written in often lyrical, musical phrases. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't understate Bret's struggles. Fortunately, he is surrounded by people who believe in him and help lift him up when he's down.
I encourage you to read, Beyond the Precipice. You'll be glad you did!
I love a good mystery/suspense. And that's what this novel is a well-written suspense. I am mostly sci-fi/fantasy but the musical aspect and writing style captured my imagination.
Absolutely loved this book. The writing reflects the musical undertows of the story flowing with beautiful but precise notes from depths of sorrow to heights of passion. The characters are well rounded and I felt emotionally attached to them. Secrets and tension, blossoming love and uncertainty weave a complex and intriguing story. With its locality of Edmonton, Alberta the reader has a sense of place and life in this city. I thoroughly recommend this book.

I’m not sure what to say… I liked the book. I liked the story.
I found the book to be very slow and I felt that it dragged on, but at the same time, I could not put it down because I knew there was some sort of mystery that I did not know quite what it was. I suspected, but I wasn’t sure. So I had to keep reading to find out the mystery. And then once I figured out the mystery, I couldn’t put it down because it just kept going!
I loved the musical aspect of the book as I am a musical person so that really kept my attention as well.
Additionally, I felt like there was a lot I could personally relate to in the story which made it all the more appealing to me to read. All in all, it was a good read that I enjoyed reading.
I loved this book! I was immediately drawn into the story of Bret, a University student struggling with a life he thought he should live, and one he is destined for. Eva describes in heart wrenching, honest detail, the emotional challenges that this young man must go through as he finds his right place in this world. He learns to love and understand himself with the help of some amazing people who have come into his life when he least expects it. This is a story that all young people should read and a few of us older adults as well that have also lived a turbulent life and survived to be happy.
This book had a great combination of an interesting story and building suspense that kept me turning the pages. I thought it was very well written... even liked the font!
