Chapter two is one of the nastiest, most spiteful, pieces of writing I have read. It’s great the author (Peggy Jaeger) provided a warning to us readers at the start of the story – preparing us for what was to come. Such warnings though, provide an enticement for readers such as me, and many others I suspect. However, I was still shocked.

There’s a kidnapper, torturer, rapist, and murderer on the loose in Washington DC. Six girls have fallen victim to this monster. The FBI’s SPCD unit (Sexual Predators of Children Profilers) lead by Tucker Petrie, a guy who’s been around the block a few times, but far from over the hill are tasked with finding this person. Petrie feels the need to ask Kella O’Brien a retired agent back into the field to assist with this case. The political and managerial pressure on Petrie is immense.

Kella is a superstar. But her husband Sean, aint so happy about her return, so there’s some drama there. We also become well acquainted with Petrie’s team of agents, this all adds interesting dimensions to the story.

The brutality here is confronting, but important. The personal dynamics between Petrie’s team members, and higher ups, witnesses and potential suspects is interesting too.

But, what really struck me about this page-turner were the twists and turns. None of them were contrived to the point of being unbelievable – they felt right, and importantly, they were all unexpected.

However, I was expecting one major twist, and it didn’t happen. Which is probably a good thing because it would have been too weird, overly forced, and way too far-fetched. I guess that’s why I’m not a writer and Ms Jaeger is!

Another thing, I learned at the end of this story that the author usually writes sweet, small-town, light romances. Imagine a writer of full cream romances writing something as brutal, and procedurally legit as this?

I gave this 4.5 stars, the only reasons I have rounded down are two-fold (1) it’s mathematically sound to do so and (2) Crime fiction is not usually my thing.

This will be 5-stars, all day, every day, for lovers of this genre. I know it.

Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for furnishing me with a copy of this book in return for my thoughts, and to my GR friend Lady MacDeath – for writing a terrific review to hook me in.

4 Stars

Oh, I forgot to mention. There’s a bit of nice romance in this one as well – well played Ms Jaeger!

In Washington D.C, 6 teenage girls have been kidnapped, tortured, raped, and murdered. Tucker Petrie, leader of the FBI’s SPCD (Sexual Predators of Children) unit, and his team of profilers have been working around the clock, to find this monster, but are still no closer to finding out the killer’s M.O.
When Senator Rowlands daughter goes missing, Kella O’Brien, (legendary) retired profiler, and previous work partner of Tucker Petrie, is called back in, after 10 years of retirement to assist the team. As clues start building up, it becomes clear to Kella, that she could be the target…

I absolutely devoured this book, it was everything I wanted in a psychological crime thriller. Full of twists and turns galore, which nearly gave me whiplash, this book was full on, from start to finish. It’s one of those books, I just didn’t want to put down. I loved each and every gripping and suspenseful page. The dynamics between Tucker and his team, are perfect and Kella is a force to be reckoned with. This book kept me guessing, throughout. Just when I thought I knew who the killer was, some new clues would appear, completely changing my mindset. If I could read this book again, I would…I loved it so much.
Peggy Jaeger, the author, wrote this story, several years ago, and she is an award winning writer of contemporary romance, but after reading, and loving Retribution, I’m hoping that she continues to write more psychological thrillers. This was SUPERB!!

5 ⭐️

I could not put this book down. My mind was blown.

This book was full of twists, turns and plenty of questions. When I thought I had it all figured out... nope.
This is a psychological thriller. It's twisted and dark. It's scary. I'm not used to this side of Peggy... but I like it!

The case is complex and a retired agent steps up to profile the person responsible. Can they solve this in time?

Can you catch the killer and save the day? or will you be the next to be caught in the trap????

Unable to force her eyes open any longer, the world in front of her went black.

WOW! What an opening. Peggy Jaeger hit hard and never let up.

What a fabulous cover and the title is spot on for Retribution by Peggy Jaeger.

Tucker Petrie is the star of the SPCD – the Sexual Predators Of Children Profilers. Six teenage girls were kidnapped, brutalized, and murdered in the Washngton DC are and Tucker is on the job, but, he will need help. He sent the Petrie Posse to approach his last partner and retired profiler, Kella O’Brien.

Tucker and Kella have known each other since she was twelve years old. They are best friends, but Kella had made a life of her own and left the dangerous world of the FBI behind. But, when she got all the details, she couldn’t say no.

The writing flows smoothly, even though the tragic story made me stumble at times. Sure, some moments were predictable, but I felt they were necessary to keep the story moving forward. The danger and cruelty that comes from the villain, leaves nothing to the imagination. At times I found myself holding my breath, devouring the words as fast as I can. The suspense was off the charts.

Retribution by Peggy Jaeger is not for the faint of heart, so brace yourself and dive into this unputdownable psychological thriller.

A 10/10 phenomenal read. This is a psychological thriller with child abduction so read the trigger warnings!! That being said.....
This book was amazing. I am a criminal minds fan and this book put me in the head space of that. I absolutely loved how the author kept the pace without rushing any part of the story and it unfolded brilliantly! I can usually figure out the killer fairly quickly but i was wrong on my first choice!! And then by the time i figured it out, i was almost at the end of the book!!
This is a must read if you like psychological thrillers, or crime dramas, or even criminal minds!! All the 🌟 🌟 🌟 🤩

I was completely enthralled by this book! As an author primarily known for romance novels, the transition into suspense writing was executed flawlessly. With its gripping storyline centered around child abduction, this psychological thriller had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

The plot is intricately woven with plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. The characters are expertly developed, each with their own complexities and depth, adding layers of intrigue to the narrative. The subtle romance elements intertwined seamlessly with the suspense, enhancing the overall tension of the story.

As a fan of crime dramas like Criminal Minds, I found myself fully immersed in the chilling atmosphere of this book. The pacing was masterfully done, allowing the story to unfold naturally without feeling rushed. I was completely blindsided by the unexpected twists, and I found myself eagerly devouring each page to uncover the truth.

In fact, I was so engrossed in the story that I ended up pulling an all-nighter just to finish it in one sitting. This is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers, crime dramas, and anyone who enjoys a riveting, pulse-pounding read.

Retribution was an unexpected surprise and a gripping read from start to finish. I went in curious, but I did not expect to be so completely pulled into the story.

The story follows a chilling investigation into a series of brutal murders of teenage girls around Washington, D.C. When the daughter of a powerful senator becomes the next victim, the pressure on the FBI’s profiling unit intensifies. With no clear leads, retired profiler Kella O’Brien is brought in to help track down a killer who seems to stay one step ahead.

What stood out most was the constant tension. Every chapter pushes the investigation forward. Each clue raises new questions. The pacing is sharp, and the stakes feel real.

The characters add depth to the story. Kella O’Brien is intelligent, determined, and deeply invested in finding the truth. Watching the team work through the case made the investigation feel intense and believable.

The suspense kept me guessing, and the twists made the journey even more gripping. By the time I reached the final chapters, I could not stop turning the pages.

I’ll definitely be picking up the second book as soon as it’s released.

If you enjoy dark crime thrillers with strong characters and a fast-moving investigation, this one is worth picking up. It caught me completely off guard in the best way.

Your heart will break, rage, and finally mend in this story!

BLUFF: Great plot building, 3rd person with multiple POV, serial murder mystery with FBI in charge (obviously :) That's there job!)

I'm not going to go into a plot synopsis - I feel it would inadvertently give spoilers.
First and foremost, there's one big thing you should know about this fantastic thriller: there's 2 descriptions of SA to minor girls. The 2nd chapter, and honest to goodness one line with maybe 8 words later in the book. They're hard, they're ugly, but especially the 2nd chapter set up the depravity of and sense of urgency to find the perpetrator. So, if you're a parent (like myself!), especial of girls, this book, especially chapter 2, will hit HARD. I mean, crack open your chest and tear your heart out, hard. And you'll be absolutely cheering for the total and utter destruction of the perpetrator. You could skip chapter two entirely and still fully enjoy the story if you need to, but you do lose a little context.
This is indeed heavy subject matter, but hints of Peggy's romance background seep though this story at just the right places to let you breathe. The love story between our FMC, Kella, our former FBI agent pulled in as a consultant on the case, and her husband Sean, is beautiful. And honestly, I want to know more! Tucker, our MMC, a current FBI agent and former coworker of Kella's, is a driven, smart, capable man. It's clear throughout the book the characters support one another, acknowledge each other's strengths, and as a team, work together. There's no "super power" for any one person that seems utterly unreasonable which is refreshing. So each of the characters, main or secondary are real and relatable.
Those small points of levity throughout the book are perfectly placed. The story moves forward well, a burst of activity, and then a bit slower just a real investigation would, the sense of urgency building and building. You'll probably find yourself even reading faster as you draw closer to the climax, the big reveal. And with that, there's great hints throughout allowing you as the reading to build your own mental suspect pool - you're fully engaged and invested in figuring out this whodunit.
There are a few elements of 'romance' as I mentioned, but it's all closed door, hinted at, or a gentle flame that builds. Just enough to balance the book out.

I definitely recommend checking this book when it releases April 23, 2024

I received this book in a Goodreads Giveaway get absolutely nothing for my review other than the satisfaction of hopefully having more folks read her book when it comes out!

Wow oh wow first book by this author and it did not disappoint! I went into this book thinking criminal minds! After reading it I have the criminal minds with law and order svu! This is a psychological thriller and it does not disappoint. There is suspense, action, twists, child abduction with a fast pace. Even with the fast pace the author had an amazing plot that didn't feel rushed to where you couldn't get a grip on the story. It was beautifully executed writing that had me guessing who done it and I was wrong!

Kelly has been out the fbi game for years. She is living her happily ever after. Small town, husband and three children. She is called upon by her former partner who knows her profiler expertise is needed. The killer leaves clues. What's the endgame?

This is a must read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I'd give more if the rating allowed it!

I absolutely loved Retribution! From the very first page, Jaeger pulled me into a tense, edge-of-your-seat thriller. The story follows Kella O’Brien, a former FBI profiler, who is drawn back into the hunt for a ruthless serial killer. The suspense is relentless and the twists kept me guessing until the very end.

What I loved most was the combination of gripping procedural details with deeply emotional, well-developed characters. Kella’s journey is intense and personal and you can feel the stakes in every scene. The pacing is perfect, the tension builds steadily and the ending left me thinking about the story long after I finished it.

If you enjoy psychological thrillers with clever plotting and strong, realistic characters, this is a must-read. I can’t wait to see what Peggy Jaeger writes next!

This is a completely different sort of story from Ms. Jaeger’s other works, but you’d never know it - it’s just that good!

Retribution is like reading an episode of Criminal Minds - it gets you thinking, keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the twists and turns will keep you guessing until the end! The story is so addicting it will keep you up all night, just to see what happens!

By far, Retribution is one of my favorite reads in the last year. I was glued to the pages!

If you like a great whodunnit that’s brimming with tension and a perfectly paced story arc, Retribution is the book for you! Spine-tingling, mind-blowing perfection!.

This was my first time reading a book by this author and I can't believe this is her first crime novel. It was brilliant, super compelling writing and I loved how many false trails we were led down.

I really enjoyed the relationship between the team, especially Anna and KC, they had such big sister/little sister energy.
