Will his call of duty break both their hearts?

Losing her father in Desert Storm has left Stephanie James with a bitter soul when it comes to the military. As a college senior juggling a full course load, Steph's only goal is to graduate with honors at the end of the semester. She’s focused, determined, and a firm believer in all work and no play. Then she meets Brandon Walker at a New Year’s Eve costume party. Despite his disguise, Steph finds herself attracted to the camouflaged soldier who curls her toes with a scorching midnight kiss.

Brandon is an engineering major and ROTC student from the hills of Kentucky. Growing up as the son of a major general has given Brandon firsthand knowledge of the struggles military families sometimes face. Now that his father’s memory is fading, Brandon is even more determined to make his dad proud and graduate as an officer in the United States Army. Then he meets Stephanie, and suddenly, his focus is less on his military service and more on the pretty brunette who has stolen his heart. When he becomes aware of Steph’s resentment toward the military, he worries their relationship is doomed.

Steph unexpectedly finds herself in need of a roommate. Brandon volunteers, thinking it’s the perfect opportunity to show her the real Brandon, before he’s forced to admit the truth about his four-year obligation to the army. Afraid that living together will be a distraction to graduating on time, Steph establishes house rules—rules they both find difficult to obey.

When faced with the realization that she's fallen in love with a soldier, can Steph’s wounds from the past be healed with love in her present . . . and in her future?

Steph and Brandon meet after they share a picture perfect kiss. They are at a New Years Eve party, she is in the library at a frat party, he walks in his Army gear and kisses while she is on the ladder. See..pretty perfect. Neither are the type of people to just walk up and kiss a stranger, but it’s New Years…

Days later and both can’t stop thinking about each other. Brandon is looking everywhere for the girl and find her one day in his Women’s Lit class. Being the only guy he stands out, throw in his Princess Bride shirt and everyone knows who he is. Both taken back now that they have finally found each other decide to get to go on a date.

So far things are moving on along perfectly, until the day Brandon learns Steph will never date a guy like him.

"You won’t date a soldier?"

"No, I won’t."

"What do you have against soldiers?"

"I have nothing against soldiers. It’s the military I have a problem with.”

Steph’s dad died while serving in the military while she was a baby. She has never got over the fact that the military took her dad. It doesn’t matter that these are completely irrational thoughts, she still feels this way and won’t budge.

Brandon decides to hide his past in hopes of being the guy to change her mind. The story progresses and things happen that are a little unbelievable to me, but hey it’s fiction. For the most part the characters are enjoyable, but in the end this one was just okay read to me. It is nice for a day when you are looking for a sugary sweet story, with minimal angst or drama.

My Thoughts - Story
I found this to be a medium level emotional book, but I just couldn’t get past how shallow Stephanie was. I understand her hatred toward the military and the fear of having a relationship with someone who could be shipped overseas to fight, but I think she just took it a bit too far.

You don’t choose who you fall in love with…it chooses you. Yeah, there were some other things that I can understand why Stephanie reacted the way she did…

It was sweet romance with Princess Bride references that hooked me.

Brandon is perfect except for a few moments of drama….stupid, stupid man.

Re-Cap
Stephanie’s father died overseas and she has sworn off the military and anything that goes along with it. But during a New Year’s Eve masquerade a handsome man dressed in camouflage kisses her in the library. Both of them can’t get their minds off of the other and with the start of the new semester, Stephanie and Brandon find themselves in the same Lit class together.

Things progress between the two of them and with Brandon knowing Stephanie’s hatred toward the military, he keeps his ROTC status a secret until the shit hits the fan.

#1 I'm going to try to do this without spoiling anything

#2 Sydney has a way with words.

#3 try not to cry.

This story was beautiful...Sydney weaves a story without taking up useless time.
Things progress....time moves on...the important things are known.

The relationship that develops between Steph and Brandon's father is, in my opinion, pretty special. Especially when it comes to key point in the story.

At the same time, the relationship that develops between Brandon and Steph's mom is very important too.

Those relationships are like the key to the story, and create this backdrop that is beautiful.

I find it a great, well written story.

If I could give this book 10 stars I would! This story is amazing! I no joke read it in one day because I couldn't put it down! Being a military wife, I thought "okay I'm going to like this", but it went far beyond my expectations. Bravo Mrs. Logan! One of my favorite books to this day!!!!

A sweet romance, very little drama, and quite entertaining.
My favorite quote,

I never thought I would love a soldier. I never thought I could.
Until a soldier loved me.”

I was honored to be pre-reader of the latest novel by Sydney Logan. Solider On does not disappoint on the character development and realistic topic the author highlights throughout her novels. The heroine and her hero are complex characters who are going through their own personal/family issues when they meet for the first time. Their relationship is realistic with the struggle of developing a romantic relationship while balancing life's other demands. The heroine and hero are both far from perfect with the handling of their complex relationship. However, those character flaws are what draws the reader into the story...because no one is perfect. I found it courageous that the author selected a military hero. In today's society, military men and women should be highlighted for their own courage. I thank the author for the inclusion of that element! As with the author's other novels/books, she pulls you in with the weaving of her investment of her characters. Be prepared to become invested in the characters (tissues might be advised).

I was pleased to read Soldier On by Sydney Logan as a part of her release blitz and book blog. She provided me a free copy and in return, I offer this humble review.

Sydney Logan knows how to create a book boyfriend. Brandon says the right things, thinks the right things, and does the right things. Well, almost. He has just enough secrets to make him a little mysterious to Steph and keep him from being one of those lovely (but sometimes boring) goodie good boys.

As with all of Ms. Logan's stories, this one flows effortlessly and she manages to keep the plot light, focused on the development of the characters, without being aimless or plotless. The main characters are rounded, full people, not stereotypes or cardboard cut outs, and the secondary characters peppered without are funny and heartbreaking.

This novel is a perfect for lovers of Young Adult and New Adult.

Ever ever since I have read Dear John, I have always been fascinated in stories about Soldiers/Army. I don’t want to go all 'Nicholas-Sparks' on you guys but there's just something bittersweet yet so romantic about the concept of stories that involves soldiers. And looking for good stories that involves them can be a pretty tough job.

So, I was actually surprised (and honored) that I got an email from the author Sydney Logan offering to read this book of hers and upon reviewing the summary of Soldier On, I immediately grabbed the opportunity to read it and squeee it doesn’t disappoint and definitely lived up to the type of story that I'm looking for.

"Plans change. Memories fade. People leave.
For every amazing thing that happens to you, there are twenty crappy things just waiting to knock the smile off you face. But you keep smiling. You keep loving. You soldier on..."

Brandon needs to stay focused and determined to finish his studies.
No time for falling in love since he's committed to a four-year of service in the United States Army in exchange for paid college tuition. He needs to fulfill his duties and serve his country. After his service, he can have all the time in the world to do what he wants and even fall in love.

Stephanie needs to stay focused and determined to finish her studies.
She's your typical girl-next-door who has a full-load of classes plus a part time job and doesn’t have the time in the world to go to parties or better yet date until that New Year’s Eve...

"I just had the most perfect kiss of my life, and I don’t even know his name."

This is definitely the way you should start a novel. Total Swoon! Stephanie and Brandon's first meeting enticed me to read more. They met on New Year's Eve - Her wearing a Belle costume while He's wearing a soldier costume - and aside from the New Year's fireworks, their kiss also did some fireworks for me. Yiiii! :)

They met again after the said party but that's when reality sets in. Stephanie despised everything that is military after losing her father on service in a Desert Storm. It left her wounded and bitter. And that's where the complication comes because you see, Brandon is a soldier.

From the beginning, the chemistry is there and seeing them banter with one another is just so sweet. I enjoyed reading Brandon and Stephanie’s story even their cheesy and so used lines with one another. They are both far from perfect and they could have said and did things differently but then it still leads them to the right path so it’s all okay.

They are both going through a lot with their personal and family issues as they met but their development over the course of the story was so potent and good to see. It was nice seeing Stephanie take risks. It was also nice seeing Brandon taking care of his sister and dad and owning up his decisions.

The secondary characters also did a huge impact to the story. Stephanie’s best friend Stella and her boyfriend Xavier has been good friends and guide for both Brandon and Stephanie. Their families are also great additions. It’s nice to see them interact with one another for they all played an important role to the lives of the lead characters.

The phasing of the story is great. It's like things fall into a timeline throughout the story and pages are not wasted for some unnecessary additions. In all, Soldier on was a well written story of love, dedication, acceptance and understanding. I'm now looking forward to read more from Sydney Logan after this.

*** Review to come June 25 as part of blog tour ***

**I received an ARC of Soldier in exchange for an honest review***

Coming from a military family, I couldn't wait to read this, especially as I have a love for Sydney Logan's books. I wasn't disappointed.

I expected, from the summary, to be in floods of tears throughout the entire story, but I wasn't. Logan deals with the loss of a family member on the front line in such a tasteful way, I couldn't cry. Whilst the story arc of Steph's father was sad, it wasn't fresh and recent which would have ripped my heart out. It showed that while losing someone, whether you have met them or not, is not as easy as many think. There's that old adage of "Time heals all wounds" - sometimes that isn't always true. Such loss can have such an impact on someone's outlook on life, such as it did for Steph.

Enter Brandon.

Brandon's a soldier... but after Steph telling him she could never date a soldier, he hides this fact from her. How's this work out? Let's say... not great. He has his reasons, and his own family issues that will truly tug at your heartstrings, especially when we are introduced to his family.

All in all, the characters are likeable, but not without their faults. Brandon, Steph, and their friends Tessa and Xavier are 'normal' people with stuff going on in the background that affects their lives at college. I love the way Logan writes believable relationships, both romantic, platonic, and familial. The 'realness' just jumps off the page at you and you can't help but fall in love with them, especially when they're not perfect.

I have yet to meet a Sydney Logan book I didn't love, and Soldier On is right up there among my favourites!

HAPPY RELEASE DAY!!!

I loved Soldier On. Full disclosure: I was blessed to be on the editing team for this one.

From Brandon and Steph's first kiss, through the growing pains of a new romance, through the secrets that might keep them apart, I loved all of it.

I'm married to a Retired Air Force Captain. My daughter is dating a Marine. We know the military lifestyle. Ms. Logan nailed it. The pride, the fears, the joy to be found. Her research shines through.

There were times when I wanted to smack Brandon, and then Steph! Ah, she had such a chip, no, a BOULDER on her shoulder. She had some growing to do to whittle that down to something manageable. Reading through their growing pains had me flipping pages (well, I was reading on my kindle, so flicking through screens!) at a great rate. Their growth was a joy to read.

The supporting cast, from his sister to her mother, their friends (both young and old), and even a dog, added a depth to the book as each one played an important part. There are a couple scenes with salutes that had me in tears and a scene with a pond that had me on the edge of my seat. Well done, Ms. Logan!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sweet romance with a plot that reads real.

If you are looking for a sweet, romantic military romance with a light dose of angst, then Soldier On is for you. This is a standalone story and will truly warm your heart and make your pulse race. Steph and Brandon are two wonderfully-written characters and I was rooting for them to make it from the very start! But Brandon (foolishly) is hiding a whopper of a secret from Steph that might spell the end of their very new and fragile relationship.

Brandon is a handsome, smart, driven and honorable guy and you would think he would be the perfect match for Steph. But she has a deeply rooted hatred of the military for her own reasons and he is scared to tell her the truth about himself.

This is a lovely book with a moderate amount of steam and a fast-paced storyline. The author has a beautiful writing style and handles some very heavy topics with great sensitivity and care. If you are looking for a fairly quick, heart-warming story, then Solider On is definitely for you.

Soldier On is the story of Steph and Brandon. Steph has very strong opinions about the military and Brandon is in the ROTC. He keeps this a secret because he likes Steph and wants her to get to know him as him, not as a soldier in a military that she resents.

Brandon has always been focused on what he want to do. His plans include college and then the Army. Now that he has met Stephanie, his plans don't seem as important. However, he still feels like he needs to honor his family's traditions so he finds himself at a crossroads.

This story is absolutely AMAZING. I venture to say that this is Sydney's best book EVER! She has a way of writing characters that feel like your best friends. You are pulled into the story and can't put it down. I give this book 5++++++++

Stephanie James lives by a mantra: make good grades, graduate in May, and despise everything regarding the military. Losing her father in a friendly fire accident during Desert Storm has left a bitter taste for the military for her and fear that she may end up alone like her mother if she were to fall for a soldier. Therefore, she places her sights on graduating and becoming an English teacher, not falling in love.

Brandon James lives by his own mantra: make good grades, graduate in May, and remain focused on making his father proud by following in his footsteps as a soldier. Brandon received an ROTC scholarship and plans to commit to four years in the Army upon completion of his computer engineering degree. Falling in love isn't part of his plans either.

Things change. People change. Plans change.

A chance meeting during a New Year’s Eve costume party brings these two together. A kiss at the stroke of midnight alters everything. When Brandon seeks out to find Stephanie after that night, he doesn't realize her revulsion for the military until they both fall hard for one another.

I enjoyed this book, all the way down to the cheesy one-liners from the 80s. It is a book with a theme that carries throughout for us all to “Soldier On.” Stephanie’s entire insight is modified because she falls in love with a soldier, something that is taboo in her mind. With the aid of some very strong supporting characters, she comes to the realization that it is all right to adjust her plans and take a risk. Brandon’s character is so genuine and definitely swoon worthy, despite the fact he isn't completely upfront with Stephanie concerning his military involvement. He is a true gentleman, never pushing Stephanie, and takes care of his Alzheimer’s stricken father when his sister calls on him. For a light, comical, and quick read, I definitely recommend Soldier On.

** JOSIE'S 4.5 STAR REVIEW **

This is the first time I read a book written by Sydney Logan. After reading this book I have to ask myself how the world did I miss this author? I am a Marine mom and I love any read anything that has to do with the military. This book was written so well, the details were incredible, the plot flowed wonderfully and the character development was superb. I really identified with Stephanie and Brandon’s promise they made due to their military backgrounds. I fell in love with Brandon and Stephanie. There is no wrong person in this story. This story is about acceptance, forgiveness, moving on and taking a chance on love.

Stephanie is such a beautiful character. She never got the chance to know her father since he was killed by friendly fire in Desert Storm. Her love and anger with him being taken away from her is strong and intense. Steph vowed to never have anything to do with anyone in the military. Step is focused on her school and has a plan to graduate and become a teacher. She studies hard and plays very little. In mere seconds her life is changed forever when, she crosses paths with Brandon at a New Years’ party on campus. Everything she vowed to stay away from is put to the test by his presence.

Ladies hold on because I am about to introduce you to Brandon. Brandon’s father is very ill, he promises his father that he will follow in his footsteps by joining the Army. He is in the ROTC program on campus and has a full scholarship and after graduation he will be enlisted in the Army. Brandon is focused on his career. There has never been anything to make him question his decision. After kissing a girl at a New Years Eve party and then not being able to find her after the party, he is shocked to see her days later on campus. That is all Brandon needs to pursue Steph. When he finds out that she wants nothing to do with the military he feels by moving in with her and getting her to fall for him that things would just fall into place. He wasn’t banking on how far Steph’s hate for all things military was.

“I love you, Step. I love you so much that I don’t even know if I want to be a soldier anymore, and I never thought that would happen. It was always the plan. Always. Not forever. I don’t want to be a soldier forever, but for now, this is what I am. For the next four years, this is who I am.”

“I’m a soldier; I am a soldier in the United States Army.”

“Pack your s***, and get out of my apartment.”

Your heart will break for both Brandon and Steph. The author does an amazing job in showing readers the turmoil, pain and deep sadness they feel being apart and for having such strong views on the military. Both do not want to break their promises but neither can deny they love each other. I loved the support system they have with their friends and family, they make sure to let each know there is not right or wrong in this situation, the decision will have to come from their hearts.

“I can’t tell you what to do. But I can tell you what not to do. Don’t give up on him. You see, I didn’t need to tell you to tell me that you’re in love with him. I knew you’d tell me when you could find the words. Maybe that’s what Brandon was trying to do. Maybe he was just trying.”

“Dad, I’m committed to the military. Just like you always wanted.”

“Just like I always wanted. But is it what you wanted?”

“Be a good husband. Be a good father. It’s not how many medals or stripes you earn. It’s family. Your wife. Your kids. And then their kids. Someday when you marry that pretty girl sitting in the living room, read it from time to time.”

Brandon and Step are a work in progress. There is no denying they love each other but one can’t back down and the other does not know how to let go of a past that they never got. I was very emotional reading this book because I felt the character turmoil and it really broke my heart.

“You see, even if I could get out of my commitment, I wouldn’t. Not even for you. And that’s hard for me to admit, because there’s pretty much nothing I wouldn’t do for you.”

“You’re leaving. Soldiers leave, and sometimes, they don’t come back. I don’t know if I can, and I don’t know want to make a promise I can’t keep. I just need some time, I need to think.”

This read was a good clean read, innocent, pure and intense story with a couple in love who have different beliefs. I really enjoyed how the author told their story. She added just the right amount of anguish but kept the main focus on the couple trying to figure out if they could be together despite the obstacles in their way. Will Steph be able to open her heart to Brandon and accept him for who he is? Will Brandon be able to Soldier on knowing he can lose the one person that means so much to him? Will Brandon and Step get their HEA? Click this puppy and find out, you will be glad you did.

I am going to say this is Sydney's best story to date. Pure perfection...

Sydney Logan is just one of those rare writers for me, that no matter what she writes, I love.

It's true. Her stories always leave me with a smile on my face.

Soldier On was no exception.

So touching. So poignant. Touched the very essence of my soul with emotions that just had me reeling from one end of the spectrum and beyond.

I snot sobbed through the last half of this story!

Brandon and Steph's relationship was realistic with all the obstacles that go along with new relationships, compounded by Steph's utter dislike of the military.

I actually found her to be immature in her reasoning why she disliked the military and her obstinate attitude a crux to keep herself closed off, not allowing anyone to get close to her. Steph kept herself focused on school and her goals. Again, reinforcement of the self built walls she kept up. defintiely nice to see those walls crumble a bit as the story went on.

Brandon is the perfect book boyfriend. Kind, respectful, honor bound, loving, smexy, just a good person.

He suffers from guilt of trying to always please and make his father proud. Something all to familiar for many sons.

He is ROTC which is how he is going to school. When Brandon and Steph meet, instant attraction but an attraction they both try to keep at bay because of their own secrets and demons.

When Steph discovers Brandon's secret is when the snob sobbing commenced. You totally got these two, understood both sides, and just cheered for them to come to terms with their pasts and figure out their futures.

Soldier On was so well written, so smooth the flow, that I just kept turning page after page just wanting to know what happens next.

The secondary characters, Tessa and Xavier, Steph's best friends, Christian, Brandon sisters were fantastic characters as well completely driving and anchoring the story line.

And though there was a military theme to the story, I found it be more a story of loss, love, and healing.

Breathtakingly intense.

Loved it to pieces! Sydney Logan, you play with my heart in the best possible ways!!

****I was given an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review***

I'm pretty sure that Sydney Logan can not write a bad book!

Soldier On is a book about a girl who, after losing her father in Desert Storm before she was even born, swears she can never love someone in the military....until a soldier falls in love with her.

Sydney captures our attention right off the bat - a frat house has a library big enough to have a ladder?? Stephanie is as floored as we are and, being the book lover she is, she is unable to resist the lure. She's even dressed as Belle from Beauty and the Beast at this particular Halloween party - who could resist? Stephanie comes face to face with a man dressed as a soldier and they share a kiss she's unable to forget. From there, the story leads us fall in love with Brandon as gently as Stephanie does. Things continue beautifully - until Stephanie tells Brandon she could never love a soldier. Brandon is ROTC and the military owns him for four years after he graduates college. With hearts breaking, Brandon and Stephanie have to figure out if Stephanie can kick this chip off her shoulder and love the soldier who loves her.

Soldier On is a beautiful, heartfelt story of love and loss. A conversation between Stephanie and Brandon's dad (who is suffering from Alzheimer's) is perhaps one of the most beautiful conversations I've ever read. The interactions are so real it's hard to believe that this is a conversation in a book and not one overheard at a family dinner.

This book made me ugly cry happy tears. That's not something that I can say about many books.

Give it a read. You won't be sorry.

OH I am such a sucker for a military romance...and I totally loved this gorgeous story.

Stephanie, Steph to her friends, is a dedicated and determined college student in the final semester of her studies. Her life is all mapped out, study hard, graduate with honours, get a teaching job and then maybe live happily ever after. So far so good. Steph has no time for romance and even if she did she has one strict rule - No Dating Soldiers.

Brandon too is in his final semester, extremely driven he is determined to make his Dad proud and come out on top in Engineering all while following the family motto of "Soldiering On"

Brandon and Steph meet briefly at a New Years eve party, a New Year kiss leaves them both awestruck. They do not cross paths again until classes commence and they find they share the same Women in Literature class.

Steph struggles with her feelings, she is extremely attracted to Brandon but she doesn't want any obstacles preventing her completion of college. Brandon is confused by the intense feeling he has for Steph too. They play it safe for a while and slowly realise that the chemistry is too hard to deny.

Steph opens herself up to Brandon and shares her secrets and her number one dating rule. Brandon realises that the secret he is hiding could make or break his relationship with Steph...the question is how long can he keep the secret...and the longer he avoids it the worse the outcome is likely to be!

A beautiful story, very easy to read. The characters are adorable and easy to relate to. Ms Logan has done a wonderful job with this story. I look forward to reading more of her work!

I’ve read several of Sydney Logan’s books, and I have to now say that Soldier On is my favorite. I loved it!

Steph is a college student with her eye on graduation and no time for men. Brandon is the same way – working hard to graduate from college and from ROTC into the U.S. Army. But when they meet, the attraction is undeniable. Problem is, because of her father’s death in Desert Storm, Steph absolutely HATES the military.

I really enjoyed Steph and Brandon’s banter, but there were also times I wanted to wring both of their necks. Steph was stubborn and Brandon deceitful… but as they grew closer, they changed, and it was a wonderful thing to see.

The secondary relationships are fabulous too – Steph’s best friend Tessa and her boyfriend Xavier are so much fun. I want to hang out with them (and have Tessa cook for me, of course.) Brandon’s family brings out a whole different set of emotions. His father is suffering from Alzheimer’s and deteriorating before his eyes. There is a particular scene near the end that made me cry it was so beautiful – and there are many more touching scenes in this book.

A sweet romance about a boy, a girl, and a family working to get through the tough times by leaning on and loving each other - Soldier On is a winner!

SPOILERS I Just finished reading Soldier On and I have to tell you it is an amazing book. The characters are rich and real.
I felt their emotions.Giddy at a first kiss. Nervous at the time when they connected again. Angry, sad happy ecstatic excited and content. I laughed and cried and laughed while I cried. I highly recommend this Book I give it 5 STARS.

Join Steph and Brandon as they start out focused on school and career. Soldier On by Sydney Logan was a beautiful, emotional, gripping and compelling read that just could not be put down. This story moves you to tears and all of the characters have their own set of struggles and challenges that are met head on and bring forth the water works.

The character growth of Brandon and Stephanie is enormous and their story flows well. Brandon and Stephanie's characters are well matched in the story and find a good balance within their character struggles and successes. A cast of characters makes this book a stand out that will bring tears in many scenes and paves the way for a storybook happily ever after.
5 Shining Stars!

Sydney Logan is one of the handful of authors that I will read anything she writes. Her story is about love, trust, fear, anger, the military, real life adult issues, health, and so much more, and it's heartbreaking in some moments and completely heart melting in others.

This book was recommended by a friend and I bought it to support a local East Tennessean. I could not put the book down. It is beautifully written and so much more than a romance novel. Not that there is anything wrong with a romance novel. I can imagine a book club reading and enjoying this book. I highly recommend this book. I cannot wait to read more of her work.

I'm so pleased to be included in Sydney Logan's tour for her latest romance, Soldier On . This is her first self-published book and it's quite engaging! I read it all in one sitting.

The author provided me with a complimentary copy for review. Thank you! :)

When faced with the realization that she's fallen in love with a soldier, can Steph’s wounds from the past be healed with love in her present . . . and in her future?
Review
This is a delightful New Adult Military Romance.
"Do you have someone to kiss at midnight?" he asks.

I simply shake my head. He steps closer, pinning me between his body and the bookshelf.

"You do now."

Not quite the opening sequence but very close!

The story between Brandon and Steph really works for me for several reasons. Steph is a real person with a serious chip on her shoulder. I can understand her, but I don't like how this chip has affected parts of her life. Still, she has maintained a largely positive relationship with her mother, has good friends, and is an intelligent young woman ready to make her way in the world. She's focused and doing her best to prepare for anything.

And I have to say a word about her friend, Tessa, who is Steph's biggest mainstay as we go into the story and the man whom Steph hasn't prepared herself for.
"You know, sometimes I step on the scale and wonder how I've gained twenty-five pounds since my freshman year. Then I remember I'm living with Rachael Ray."

Tessa is in a long-term, loving relationship with a sports star at their university. Tessa is open, supportive, and an awesome cook. She and said boyfriend provide Steph with sounding boards and balance in a world in which Steph sees goals and lists of things that have to be done. So getting to see Steph being playful is very helpful, because otherwise? We might not like her much.

Due to that chip on her shoulder. A chip that Our Hero, Brandon, finds out about early on.

Brandon is a dedicated young man with a plan, rather like Steph. But his plans include time in the Armed Forces and he's in the ROTC — Reserve Officer Training Corps. As he gets acquainted with Steph, he finds out she hates all things military. And, because he's really into her and doesn't want to drive her away before they get to know each other, he doesn't tell her he's in the military.

Not so brilliant, right?

And Steph doesn't pick up on the abundance of clues that surround Brandon, either. She has avoided all things military her whole life so it's as if part of her brain refuses to see a soldier when he's right there in front of her.

The revelation is not pretty.

But. It happens.

So, why did I enjoy this story?

Not for the deceptiveness of the hero or the close-mindedness of the heroine. I loved it because it was well-written, fast-paced, and had some terrific elements.

One of these is Brandon's dad. Like his dad, my father is a veteran and facing memory issues. The way Sydney Logan portrays that here is excellent. Good days, bad days, but the family loves and "soldiers on" even so.

Another is how the romance works AFTER the big reveal. There is pain, there is healing, there is a determination to move beyond it and to grow and love anyway. It's a perfect time in their lives to learn that this is one way to grow up. And they do.
"You always have a choice, Steph."

Steph sighs softly before placing a soft kiss below my ear.

"That's the thing, Brandon. I don't have a choice at all. I love you. You love me. The only choice we have is to make it work."

I bury my hands in her hair and pull her face down to mine. Our hands roam as we kiss, causing shivers to radiate up my spine. Steph breaks the kiss to grab the hem of my shirt. She lifts it over my head and tosses it aside.

Then she surprises me by placing her hand over my heart.

"No matter where you are, I will be right here."

Another is because Sydney Logan is a fun writer.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a real-world, new adult romance that has its ups and downs. Want a sweet hero? He's here. Want your HEA? That's here, too. Do things get...warm? Yep, they do. But it's not too heavy, honest. It's just sweet and passionate and well-timed.

You should pick up a copy for your shelves or Kindle! Find it at Amazon!

During the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to familiarize myself with Sydney Logan’s novels. I first read one of her books last summer, and since then I’ve found myself drawn to her stories again and again.

Soldier On is the fourth book I’ve read by Sydney, and it is my favorite to date. My husband asked about the book and Sydney’s style of writing as I was preparing to draft this review, and it didn’t take me long to use the adjectives “sweet” and “wholesome” to describe this romance, although there is much more to Sydney’s writing than that.

Sydney resides in East Tennessee and usually sets her stories in small town settings. Having spoken with her recently, I know it’s important to her that the rural communities in her stories are populated by “good-hearted, friendly people who are educated, well-read, and truly love living in the country.” As someone with roots in a rural community myself, I truly appreciate Sydney’s depictions of small town life, but there are many themes and situations which can be universally understood and enjoyed no matter where you call home.

At the beginning of Soldier On, college student Stephanie James reluctantly finds herself at a New Year’s Eve frat house costume party. She’s a serious student, focused on achieving her academic dreams, and uninterested in her university’s social scene. Seeking solace and peace, Stephanie wanders off to find a quiet corner to hide away in.

“Bravely, I try a few of the rooms, but all are locked except for a set of open double doors at the end of the hallway.

Curious, I step inside, and I’m instantly mesmerized.

Frat houses have libraries?

This one does, complete with ceiling-high bookshelves. Laptops line one wall, and a giant multimedia screen is attached to the other. While all of it is impressive, nothing excites my book-loving heart more than to see the library ladder.

Secretly, I’ve always wanted to climb one – the tall ladders that roll from one end of the shelves to the other. Ironically enough, library ladders always remind me of Beauty and the Beast. Or the love scene in Atonement.

One of those movies is G-rated. The other most definitely is not.”

And (as tends to happen in great romance novels) Stephanie is soon joined in the library by a handsome stranger dressed as a soldier. They speak ever so briefly, an instant attraction brewing between them as the New Year quickly approaches…

“Before I can ask why he noticed me, shouts erupt from downstairs.

“Ten, nine, eight…”

“Do you have someone to kiss at midnight?” he asks.

I simply shake my head. He steps closer, pinning me between his body and the bookshelf.

“You do now.”

Horns blare below, but I barely notice because in the next second, his mouth covers mine. His lips are featherlight and sweet, causing warmth to spread through my veins and settle itself in my heart. I sigh, causing my lips to part slightly, allowing him to deepen the kiss.”

As the story progresses and Stephanie and her new friend, Brandon, get to know one another, both find that their careful planning for the future never took falling in love with someone into account. Brandon is as serious about his future as Stephanie, but he becomes concerned when he realizes their individual aspirations and beliefs strongly contradict one another.

Soldier On is a carefully crafted love story, featuring two fully-developed lead characters who deeply care about one another, but who are also challenged by their family circumstances and the unstoppable onset of adulthood. Stephanie and Brandon are faced with important decisions that could not only alter their individual plans but could also challenge their long-held perceptions of their place within their families.

Sydney Logan manages to handle this fragile love story with a wonderful mixture of warmth, humor, consideration and passion. On it’s first day of release, Soldier On became an Amazon best seller, and within a few days was featured in USA Today as one of this week’s new romance release highlights. So, clearly I’m not alone in my high opinion of this story.

Whether you’ve read one of Sydney Logan’s novels or not, I highly recommend that you pick up Soldier On. It’s a great summer read and enthusiastically earns four stars from me!

Having a son in law in the service this was a relateable book for me to read. I also like to read books where the men are in the service or were there at one time. Usually the women swoon over them or fight their attraction to no avail. But this one turns out to be something else where the girl wants nothing to do with a soldier thanks to having lost a father she never got to meet to the service. Also not wanting to turn out how her mother did mourning forever (so she thinks) she has her sights set on one course with no room for a guy or love for that matter. Going to a party at a frat house Stephanie finds she is the only one not drinking not seeing anything fun in anything associated with it looks for her friend ready to go and stumbles onto the library. Being everyone is in costumes when a soldier stumbles upon her while she is on the ladder and being it is close to midnight New Year's Eve when they get close to each other she also notices he hasn't been drinking and the kiss the share is wow for both. Kisses some could say are the kind that could be the ones if with the right one that sears the soul. That is also to say the beginning of the end for both of them even if they do not know it at the time. It is quite exciting after that to see how the author leads them to finally meet each other after this night with their mutual attraction for each other to grow and grow. But there is one tiny teeny fact that Brandon is not sharing with her thanks to her aversion to not wanting anything to do with a soldier is what his goals are with all the training and schooling that is leading him to that goal. Thanks to his father it is something he also hopes to make his father proud he does. The heart wants what the heart wants more times than not what the mind says no too. Especially when that is part of your past that you just maybe might have to live with instead of avoiding it. This author does a fine job of showing how one girl Steph will have to do just that especially if she wants to have love in her life or is principle more of something that will warm the heart and the bed at night. Once I was caught up in this tale of these two young loves it was not easily put down having to know if love would be the one that comes out on top. Even when the truth about Brandon is revealed will their path go separate ways or travel together the way they should go. Fabulous other characters also are in this novel that are in these two lives her mother and friend, his father and sister with her kids. There is also something alittle sad you see that develops further along that is very well written that opens a window on what it could be like to have to deal with a loved one in that same situation. Following the heart the rewards can be tremendous that last a life time which you become the cheerleader cheering these two one to achieve just that. If a novel can get you to interact like that the author has engaged you the way the talent of a author that know her stuff should be able too. Quite satisfied with how this all flows and leads you to the last few pages with a lasting impression and a smile on your face. Received a arc for a honest review.

I was kindly provided with an advance copy in exchange for an honest review

So what did I think of Soldier On? I can quite honestly say I loved it, I started it at 9pm and had it finished for just after 11pm, nothing was gonna stop me from finishing it!

Steph and Brandon's story is just beautiful and quite refreshing too in that it is not a young adult book filled with sex!

Steph James is a college senior with her only ambition at the moment to graduate and become a teacher, what she doesn't plan is meeting a guy and falling in love. She meets Brandon briefly at a New Year's party where he is her midnight kiss, she is dressed as Belle and he is a soldier, the kiss is unforgettable but before she can get his name he vanishes.

They meet up again in a shared literature class and get to know one another, discovering shared interests such as a love of all things 80's, from the start Brandon is extremely flirty determined to get his girl, he is smitten and all does go really well until a spanner hits the works.

Steph has grown up never knowing her Father, he died in Desert Storm, she hates the military, she is fed up of hearing that her dad is a hero and he died for his country, soldiers are a no no which leads to a problem, the one thing that Brandon has not told her about is the fact that he is one and he is signed up for four years.

He tries to keep it secret and as Steph finds herself looking for a room mate he decides that he is perfect for the position and the two end up living together but with some no touching rules firmly in place which prove to be difficult for this young couple with such amazing chemistry.

With the help of Steph's best friends Tessa and Xavier, Brandon has to decide whether to tell Steph or to keep it hidden but the decision is made for him when she discovers his dog tags, she is furious to say the least and she throws him out but she loves him and he loves her, can they overlook all the obstacles in their way and can Steph get over her hatred of the military? Well get going and download the book to find out!!

It is a great read, the characters of Tessa and Xavier, Steph's friends are also well written - maybe they need a book as they have quite a big story of their own! Also the parents of Brandon and Steph, especially Brandon's dad who had Alzheimer's are great additions and never feel like they have been tagged on.

As I said this book is refreshing in that we have a young couple with a huge amount of chemistry but they don't jump in to bed straight away, now I am by no means a prude but maybe just a little jaded after reading gazillions of books where the leading characters are in bed by page 3.

One thing I would love - maybe a novella!! is to find out how Brandon and Steph continue their lives after the end of this book, you do find out a little at the end but I don't know I feel like their story hasn't quite finished yet but I guess that is up to their boss Sydney!!

It is out now and it is awarded 5 out of 5!
