Age was a peculiar concept for Owein Mansel. He’d been born in 1624, and been spiritually conscious ever since, which technically made him 227 years old. However, the majority of that time had been spent embodied in a house on an island off the coast of Rhode Island, and houses were, by definition, not living. Of those 227 years, only sixteen had been spent as a human, so one might argue sixteen as his age. However, the body he now occupied—which had previously belonged to a boy named Oliver Whittock— was physically eighteen, as of five months ago. And so, when anyone asked after Owein’s age, he usually said that: eighteen.
Wizard of most wicked ways could be described as Silas' book in the Whimbrel House series, given the title and how much we see of his POV. It could also be described as Owein's coming of age book, as he transitions through adolescence and the existential crises peculiar to his situation, as adolescents are wont to do. But the one adjective I cannot get past is that it is superfluous to the series - as semi-spoiler - at the end of the book, we find the characters and their situation to be more or less similar to what they were at the end of the previous book.
All the characters remain well-sketched, as they have been since the beginning of the series, and it was fun to see the families again. There is also some good world-building in this book, particularly the scientific research into magic. However, this doesn't outweigh the meager story arc and the time worn love triangle. This book is recommended for anyone with nostalgia for this series, but there are no great revelations in it.

In a Nutshell: A historical fantasy with amazing characters and magic. The fourth book of the Whimbrel House series and not to be read as a standalone. Great seeing all the beloved (and not so beloved) characters again. Takes a while to get going but engrossing after that point. Mixed feelings about the inclusion of a love triangle. A good ending - not a major cliffhanger but also not complete. Looking forward to the final book!

Ever since I read the first Whimbrel House book, I've been a fan of its outstanding magic and its endearing characters. The titles of the first three books clearly indicated who the main focus of the plot would be: Merritt in Keeper of Enchanted Rooms', Hulda in 'Heir of Uncertain Magic', and Owein in 'Boy of Chaotic Making' respectively. Using the same code, it doesn't take much for Whimbrel-familiars to guess that the focus on this book is on that ultra-powerful wizard from Book One, Silas Hogwood, who has made his way into the living world again. We knew he would return, but not how he would do so. The reveal is brilliant! He is indeed the “Wizard of Most Wicked Ways.”
Bookish Yays:
😍 Owein. The boy has become a young man (at least in physical years if not in calendar years), and his character has grown not just in age but also in maturity and complexity. One scene in particular solidified my respect for him. I won't stop rooting for him and his happiness!
😍 Merritt and Hulda- just the same as always, and hence, just the same feelings. It’s amazing to see them grow in their relationship so organically – they are so good for each other. Also nice to see Beth and Baptiste return in active roles.
😍 The littlies in the book, especially three-year-old Mabol. Wish there had been more of them, but even what was there was adorable. The presence of kids changes the plot dynamics, especially for Hulda.
😍 Silas – I had complained in Book One that his creepiness wasn’t fully utilised. I take back my words. Brrr! This is the first book where the potential of the antagonist is capitalised upon completely.
😍 Great continuity. The first three books were set within a year of each other, but this fourth story occurs four years since the events of the last book. There are enough details to help us bridge the gap successfully without feeling like questions are unanswered. There’s no time wasted in plot recapitulation.
😍 The characters are not just older in this one but also more mature, but without compromising on the original character sketch. While Merritt still has some joviality, we get to see his mature side. Hulda too has improved from her earlier dispassionate behaviour, though we still see glimpses of that attitude at times. I love how the author has accounted for the passage of time through her characters’ attitudes.
😍 The magic – as astounding as ever.
😍 The great confrontation – the best part of the book. Felt like I was watching a (good) Marvel movie!!
😍 The ending – not a cliffhanger, just a journey into the next step. Perfect for the story.
Bookish Mixed Bags:
😐 Though fast-paced, the plot takes a while to get things going. The initial 20% or so is mostly musings about the love triangle and the impending major decision. Only once Silas appears on the scene does the tension amp up.
😐 While the earlier books could be tagged as ‘cozy fantasy’, this book is certainly not ‘cozy’. The overall atmosphere is tense and there are even some gruesome scenes. The earlier books balanced the tension with many lighthearted and/or romantic moments, but the banter and fun are mostly missing from this one. Then again, with such a formidable opponent to overcome, the seriousness of the overall plot is to be expected.
Bookish Nays:
😢 I didn’t expect a love triangle in this plot, and definitely didn’t foresee it taking so much of the page space. A part of me feels like this complication has been added just so that the fifth book has something solid to continue the story with. As it is, I am not a big fan of the triangle trope. But when only two of the three parties are actually present on page, it isn't even a fair triangle. Plus, the connection between the two seems more forced than organic. The letters from the third person contained more heartfelt emotions than the actual dynamic between the two characters who had scenes.
😢 I remember not being a fan of the decision to add druids to the plot of Book Three. This plot development might have been somewhat justified if they had a role to play in this story. But it looks like they are being saved for the final book because the only druid in Book Four is Fallon, who didn’t have a big role in Book Three, and whose main role in Book Four is either to serve as a full-time security for the residents of Whimbrel House or to be the voice of protest for Owein’s upcoming British fate. Fallon is a great character, but I don’t think the story did her justice, or vice versa.
All in all, this book continues the story of Whimbrel House well, but changes the tone, being darker and more sombre than the earlier books. It serves as an interesting bridge to what’s next in store for Owein, but the love triangle really bugged me. Had it not been for the return of Silas and the magical action sequences, this would easily have been my least favourite of the series. Right now, it is tied for the position with Book Three.
I am not convinced that a fifth Whimbrel book was needed. This is the shortest book so far with just 269 pages. All the others had 300+ pages. So by adding 80-100 pages more (and culling out the needless romantic interactions), the series could very well have ended here. But it’s too early to judge, I suppose. I’ll just have to wait and hope that there’s enough plot left for the grand finale.
I have my suspicions about what the upcoming book will tackle, but as all those are major spoilers, I will keep my mouth shut until Fall 2026, when we will get Book Five: “Lady of Uncanny Charms.” (Will this be Cora or Fallon? Both are strong candidates for the title! My heart says Fallon. Let’s see…)
As the fourth book of a running series and the precursor to the finale, ‘Wizard of Most Wicked Ways’ is best discovered in continuity and is absolutely not to be read as a standalone work. I hope Book Five redeems my overall feelings about the series. I want this to end on a high note and not be a damp squib like the final book of the Emily Wilde series was. 😢

1851. Whimbrel House is the same, but its residents have new challenges to face. Merritt and Hulda are raising a family on Blaugdone Island, and Owein is awaiting the next step of his royalty-approved marriage contract with Lady Cora, who's on the other side of the ocean. Fallon, the shapeshifting Irish druid, now spends a lot of her time with Owein, and his heart wants to go in a different direction from his head.

How this book, how this series, how Holmberg - can balance wonderfully cozy and utterly gravely is beyond me. Those two should not be able to coexist as though glued together. Yet that is, what this series does.
I love returning to this universe and reconnect with its beloved characters. Owein, who started as a puzzle piece for the story that was originally Merritt and Hulda, has grown so well into his own character, and with this book (and somewhat the last one as well) his own story. A story of identity, responsibility, growth, maturity, choice and heart.
As well as utterly delightful to be witness to the married life of Merritt and Hulda. I have, since the very first moment, absolutely loved Hulda and her entire character. How she is quiet, a bit shy, very prober, strict and with a heart of gold - and a defender through and through.
And I love Merritt next to her. How he sees her and how he has helped her develop, as Merritt himself has developed and grown - And I dare say, becoming more mature in this volume.
The overlaying danger and threat throughout the book, gives a tense atmosphere like previous volumes. It threatens the happiness and safety, and ties the entire series so well together from the first volume, to this one.
Being part of Silas Hogwood's POV with his inner struggle and madness was captivating and thrilling, and only added to his villainous character.
I was deeply touched by ending and am looking VERY much forward too see what will be in store in the next and final volume of this incredible series ❤

One Liner: Great action scenes

It has been five years and Whimbrel House is seeing many changes. Hulda and Merrit have kiddos (cuties). Owein is a little over eighteen and living with them. Fallon, the shape-shifting druid, is a regular visitor and Owein’s best friend, even if others don’t know about her yet. Owein’s contracts bind him to Cora. The Queen is waiting for Cora to be eighteen so that the wedding can take place.
However, the found family has to first deal with the return of Silas Hogwood. The powerful necromancer is back, intent on vengeance. Owein is worried his powers and the new human body aren’t enough to fight Silas and keep his loved ones safe.
The story comes in the third-person POV of Owein, Hulda, Merrit, and Silas.
My Thoughts:
This is the fourth book in what was originally supposed to be a trilogy. There will be a fifth and final book in the series, so this ends in a cliffhanger.
The central plot with Hulda and Merrit is sort of over in the previous book but there was a lead to this and the next one, where Owein is the main character. Since I loved the kiddo when he was a house and dog, I had to see through and support him find his HEA.
However, I’m not a fan of love triangles in any form, especially if it involves teenagers (like go and study, what are you doing choosing between ‘loves’). What with the poor kid unable to decide, this one didn’t appeal much to me.
However, the pacing is great. Maybe because there’s quite a bit of filler content with some atmospheric and dangerous scenes sprinkled in between.
I loved the scene of the villain’s reentry and the havoc he creates on the island. All scenes with Silas are terrific and filled with tension, fear, and pulse-pounding action.
The book ends on a cliffhanger though one track seems to be resolved (for now). I’m sure it’ll be revived in the next book.
To summarize, Wizard of Most Wicked Ways is a fast-paced read with some drama and danger to keep the plot interesting. Let’s see what happens in the final book of the series. Bring it on!

This has been my absolute favorite series by Charlie Holmberg and this book was so good!!! I loved having more of Owein’s story and as always I love Merritt and Hulda and seeing them grow and adding kids in.
Lots of action in this one as well!! I think the magic system in this series is so good!!

Wizard of Most Wicked Ways is the fourth book in Holmberg’s Whimbrel House series. It’s the first book in a sequel trilogy focusing on a side character, Owein, from the first trilogy. You do need to read the first trilogy first, or you will be completely lost with the backstory of Owein being a house, then a dog, then a person.
Ugh. Holmberg, I can’t even with this bad guy. First you bring him back from the dead, then unleash him on everyone I love in the story… Congratulations, I don’t think I’ve ever hated an antagonist in anything I’ve read as much as I hate Silas Hogwood.
Having gotten that rant off my chest, I can say this book is fine. Just fine, but a good fine. A fine with a smile? Truth is, I loved Merritt and Hulda’s romance so much in the first trilogy, that I found it hard to give much energy to Owein’s romance and love triangle. Especially with hating Silas Hogwood taking up all my headspace. Seriously, that guy is the worst. In a romance, it may not be a good idea to write a baddie so bad he overshadows everything else.

4.75 stars! -- Charlie N. Holmberg has done it again with another fantastic installment into the Whimbrel House series. It has quickly become one of my favorites.
We follow Owein Mansel who is now 18 and having to grapple with his impending marriage to Lady Cora in England and his feelings with his childhood Druid friend, Fallon. But when faced with the return of the sinister magician Silas Hogwood, Owein must try to protect his family in any way he can, but is his magical ability enough?
I absolutely love these books and being inside this world so much I don't want to leave. I listened to the first three and just became spellbound by the magical system, characters, and plot. This book also features Hulda and Merrit (and their adorable, opinionated three children) as well as Beth and Bapstiste (who are now married with a child). With this book, we get to see characters years later and enter into a new movement of the series with some new and returning problems. I love how there are plot elements that Holmberg planted in the earlier books that are only coming to fruition in this one. The magical system is constantly developing to add depth to the world-building and each book has a primer on the different types of magic in the beginning which is super helpful.
Owein must deal with Silas's looming threat, his conflicted feelings for two women, and his duty to his family. These are all handled well and gives Owein an opportunity to really grow from the beginning to the end of this book. I felt his stress, anguish, and fear. The fight scenes were rather detailed and visceral which upped the stakes from the previous books.
Now for some of my spoiler-y thoughts:
Overall, I was so happy to rejoin all of my favorite characters in this world. And after that ending I cannot wait to know what happens in book 5, but thank goodness there is going to be another one!! This is out March 4 of this year and I highly recommend this series to all!

Several years pass, with children playing around in Whimbrel House. Owein approaches the time for his marriage contract with the magically compatible Lady Cora when, to everyone's surprise, Silas Hogwood returns, after being dead for five years.
This book, as shown on the cover, focuses mainly on Owein, his feelings, and his dear friend, Fallon, who is an Irish shape-shifter. At this point, I think we might have a chance to see more in a maybe-future-book about Merritt and his magical kids; that would be fun!

We jump forward a few years in this part of the story and we find live on Blaugdone Island serene and peaceful (aside from the children that have now arrived in Hulda and Merritt's life and also Beth and Baptiste's)
But whilst life is good, we find Owain pining for Lady Cora yet spending his days with Fallon! He appears to have a tough decision to make in his future... AND all this is before Silas Hogwood returns, seeking revenge!
Excellent as always, very enjoyable and a blooming cliffhanger of an ending (although a mild one), so I'm hoping there's a book 5 planned!

4.25⭐️ I loved being back with my little found family! Owein, Hulda, Merritt, and the Babineaux’s were waiting for me…taking place 4 years later after Boy of Chaotic Making, we get right into what everyone has been up to!
This book was a great addition to the story filled with action, a lil romance, magic, family, and mystery! It made me emotional a handful of times towards the end. I am so excited to see how the final book closes out this story!
The Whimbrel House series perfectly blends a unique magic system, cozy vibes, and historical fantasy with the right amount of romance subplot. I am sad I have to wait a year for the conclusion with the 5th and final book!

This is such a fantastic book! From Mabol’s very first “No” to the absolutely thrilling pages that followed, I fell completely and totally in love with these characters. Merritt, Hulda, and Owein have been some of my favorite characters for a very long time, and this book just ingrained them into my heart even more.
I feel like the author really stepped up her game with this book. I have loved every Whimbrel House book, but this one tops them all. From the heart wrenching emotions that Owein dealt with to the gripping fight scenes that were just purely amazing, I had trouble putting this story down, and I certainly didn’t want it to end!
I’m dying for more of Owein’s story, and I cannot wait to see what the next chapter brings. Absolutely fantastic book, ten stars!

ARC/Superb As Always From Holmberg!
So excited to see this pop up as an ARC, a few months before the expected release date. It was good to get back to the characters of Whimbrel house, this time told from the perspective of Owen.
There’s a lot of angst, histrionics, and surprises that unfold, keeping you on the edge of your seat, and wanting more, causing it to be nay impossible to put the manuscript down.
Although Holmberg talks about that this was originally planned to be a trilogy, she had the need to move forward with book 4 after all. In the final authors notes and acknowledgements, there’s a bit of a hint, that this one may also not be the last in the series, or possibly a spin-off.
Holmberg comes back strong on this one, and definitely writes this in the style that we all have come to expect and love from her.
Highly recommend!!

Everyone on the island is married with children besides Owein, who has been having a secret friendship for 4 years with a certain Druid from Ireland.
It was interesting to see how much the characters changed over the years in-between the books, and I wouldn't say all of them were for the better. This story focused on Owein with snippets of the life between Merritt and Hulda, with an open ending. The final quarter had my emotions all over the place and I'm curious how Holmberg will end the series in book 5.
Overall I still recommend this series to Charlie fans, especially those who loved her Spellbreaker duology, and Paper Magician series.

A series who’s characters I have grown to love so much and never wanted to end. I have enjoyed being in this world and I can’t imagine it ending. Typically with series the books tend to not be as good as the first but not with this. What a terrific conclusion, though I hope we get to see the story continue. I would follow Merritt, Hulda, Owein and the rest of the cast anywhere. What a warm and cozy magical journey that I have not felt since reading Harry Potter. Thank you Charlie Holmberg for taking us on this adventure!

Enchanting and unpredictable!
Another wonderful addition to the Wimbrel House series! I loved finally getting the closure we need with the villain of the series, while it leaves things wide open for the next book. The author masterfully crafts a magical world brimming with endless possibilities, keeping me breathless as the story unfolds, never knowing what twists await.
I've loved watching the characters grow throughout the series, especially seeing Merritt and Hulda making appearances with their family. Being able to learn more about each of their pasts makes them even more endearing, deepening my obsession with following along on their journeys.
My heart was literally in my throat for the final few chapters of this book, and I'm so glad I was listening to the audiobook as I couldn't have seen the pages through my tears. I'm nervous and excited for the next book, but looking forward to seeing how things unfold!

5/5 ⭐️ I LOVE THIS SERIES OMG! I am fully obsessed. Each book has gotten better and better, I absolutely loved the different POV and my heart is so full. I can’t wait for the fifth and final book 🥹❤️ if you want a cozy fantasy / romantasy, definitely recommend this one!

I'm going to be entirely honest: at first, I was a little salty at this book. Some of that was due to the fact that the third book in this series was incredibly mid to me and I went directly into this one from having finished that one. Then, there was the fact that the two characters I'd come to grow most fond of--Hulda and Merritt--seemed to be taking a backseat in this book. Owein is a character that, initially, I felt worked better as a side character. I'm very happy to be wrong after finishing this book. I really liked seeing the journey Owein went through and I love just how much of a family they've all become over the course of the series. Seeing Owein become uncle/big brother to Hulda and Merritt's and Baptiste's and Beth's kids is just unbelievably sweet and wholesome.
I will say that I wasn't the biggest fan of the love triangle element here. This is both because I detest love triangles and also because I felt like Fallon and Owein's romantic relationship never really hit for me. This book takes place several years after the third, so any build-up between Fallon and Owein's friendship takes place when we, as readers, can't see it. And Fallon spent most of the third book--her introduction--as a bird, so the connection was never fully there. I appreciated their friendship and that Owein had someone he could rely on who flouted conventions and allowed him to be as wild and untamed as he'd always been. But the romance, and thus, Owein's conflict regarding it, felt a little hollow.
That's mostly why this is a 4 star as opposed to anything higher. Honestly, I was looking at this more as a 3, but the ending really got me. Despite the love triangle and the slightly uneven pacing, that ending did make me emotional enough to skew my rating higher. And, although I'm not as attached to Cora's family, I'm actually excited to see more of Owein's journey.

This one took me a bit longer to get through than I would have liked. I loved getting to dive back into Oweins, Merritt, and Hilda’s life, but this seemed a little slow moving. I also was expecting this to be the last book and was shocked when it clearing did not end with answers to Fallon and Cora.
I’ll continue to read the series as I am invested in the characters but I’m filling like it’s losing some of its magic.

Wizard of Most Wicked Ways is the final book in the Whimbrel House. A book that only exists because the author couldn't let go of the character yet. Where despite my complaints I knew that the author clearly knew where it was going with the previous books, I didn't quite feel that here. This was just an extra.
Four years have passed since the ending of the third book and Owein has grown since then. He is now over the age of 18 and his betrothed is almost turning 18. If she hasn't found anyone else than they will marry. Yet they don't talk about this portion at all. But at least they communicate through letters so that is something. Hulda and Merritt have started their family with three little ones and apparently the housekeeper and cook have now gotten married and have a kid.
Honestly it felt like we were getting a rehash thrown at us by resurrecting Silas Hogwood who is apparently not dead at all. He just put his soul in someone else's body as he died (which I had suspected because of something told to Merritt at the time, but when it was never used I was relieved). Silas was a fine enemy for the first book but by the time this fourth book comes around, he has become stale. There is no progress in him as a character. The little chapters we got in his point of view were boring and messy.
Owen on the other hand was always a fun character to follow but some of his choices were questionable this book. Most of them concern a druid that has been visiting him at the island for the past 4 years without him telling anyone else. She's a shapeshifter so she is often a bird or a dog when others are around. Of course this druid is female and around his age. Because we missed the 4 years that they got to know each other better there should have been something on the page between. But unfortunately it felt very flat. I didn't really believe there was anything between them. Any caring from her side felt very forced. The added romance made it worse.
And you know, I do get it from Owein's side. He is over 200 years old soul wise but is in a teen boy body and he has never experienced any romantic feelings before. But his doubts regarding having a bethroted went out the window a bit too fast for my taste.
So all in all I had higher expectations of this book and was left somewhat dissapointed.

Most of them concern a druid that has been visiting him at the island for the past 4 years without him telling anyone else. She's a shapeshifter so she is often a bird or a dog when others are around. Of course this druid is female and around his age. Because we missed the 4 years that they got to know each other better there should have been something on the page between. But unfortunately it felt very flat. I didn't really believe there was anything between them. Any caring from her side felt very forced. The added romance made it worse.
And you know, I do get it from Owein's side. He is over 200 years old soul wise but is in a teen boy body and he has never experienced any romantic feelings before. But his doubts regarding having a bethroted went out the window a bit too fast for my taste.
So all in all I had higher expectations of this book and was left somewhat dissapointed.

This series started slow and uninspiring but as I kept going the characters strengthened and I especially loved the last book. The themes throughout are good!There is mention of love, detailed kisses and mentions of bedroom scenes(married couple) throughout the books so but I’d caution teens. I think adult audiences is better. Mentions of death and the evil character is very evil and that could be upsetting to some. I can’t imagine not having a book five??? Please tell me it doesn’t end here??

Gosh I love the Whimbrel House series. I really do. That little island in RI is one of my favorite fictional places to visit, and returning for a new story was a delight.
I do think this was my least favorite installment, but that's a me thing. I don't like villain POVs, and we heard a lot from Silas in this book (and I cannot express how much I do not care about what he's been up to). I did love Owein taking the forefront of the story, he's so precious and I love him so much. Seeing where Merritt and Hulda are after going on so many chaotic adventures together had me all in my feels. 🥹
I can't wait to see how it all wraps up next year (I think?). It made me want to go back and start again at Keeper. Four stars from me!

While this book was…fine…, it did not have the charm of the first three books. It took me almost 6 weeks to read this while I sped through the other books, reading each in a week. Most disappointing? Owein. Loved him in the other books. In this one? He was OK, but not the Owein of the other books. In the acknowledgements, the author wrote that this book was unplanned as she originally thought she would write a trilogy. I think it’s very evident that this book is the misfit of the series.
