Christian Jacq is a French author and Egyptologist. He has written several novels about ancient Egypt, notably a five book suite about pharaoh Ramses II, a character whom Jacq admires greatly.
Jacq's interest in Egyptology began when he was thirteen, and read History of Ancient Egyptian Civilization by Jacques Pirenne. This inspired him to write his first novel. He first visited Egypt when he was seventeen, went on to study Egyptology and archaeology at the Sorbonne, and is now one of the world's leading Egyptologists.
By the time he was eighteen, he had written eight books. His first commercially successful book was Champollion the Egyptian, published in 1987. As of 2004 he has written over fifty books, including several non-fiction books on the subject of Egyptology.
He and his wife later founded the Ramses Institute, which is dedicated to creating a photographic description of Egypt for the preservation of endangered archaeological sites.
Between 1995-1997, he published his best selling five book suite Ramsès, which is today published in over twenty-five countries. Each volume encompasses one aspect of Ramesses' known historical life, woven into a fictional tapestry of the ancient world for an epic tale of love, life and deceit.
Jacq's series describes a vision of the life of the pharaoh: he has two vile power-hungry siblings, Shanaar, his decadent older brother, and Dolora, his corrupted older sister who married his teacher. In his marital life, he first has Isetnofret (Iset) as a mistress (second Great Wife), meets his true love Nefertari (first Great Wife) and after their death, gets married to Maetnefrure in his old age. Jacq gives Ramesses only three biological children: Kha'emweset, Meritamen (she being the only child of Nefertari, the two others being from Iset) and Merneptah. The other "children" are only young officials trained for government and who are nicknamed "sons of the pharaoh".

I really liked some of Jacq's other works (Ramses series, Stone of Light series)but this series, The Mysteries of Osiris, is not nearly as interesting. I have two more to finish, and I'll follow through in order to see what finally happens (I know good will win out etc.). But after that I guess I'll let Jacq go... too bad but there are plenty of other authors clamoring for my attention :-)

Gracias a este libro me he vuelto a enganchar a la trama. Es cuando de verdad empieza la acción. Los personajes un poco estereotipados (Iker demasiado perfecto, Medes demasiado malvado...), pero ha mejorado con respecto al primer libro.

Partiamo dal presupposto che a me Christian Jacq mi è sempre piaciuto come autore devo dire che con questa nuova serie di romanzi mi sta piacevolmente sorprendendo.
Questo è il secondo volume che narra le avventure dello scriba Iker e della moltitudine di persone che poi ritroviamo intorno a lui, uniti contro un unico nemico che vuole il male per l'Egitto. In queste pagine trovaimo un Iker ormai scriba affermato che però continua ad essere tormentato dal suo passato, che si può considerare il suo punto debole, e dall'amore per la bella e misteriosa sacerdotessa del tempio di Abido. Ormai traviato dai discorsi di coloro che crede suoi amici si appresta a compiere un atto decisivo, ma qualcosa gli permetterà di ricredersi e diventare in questo modo una delle persone di fiducia del faraone d'Egitto.
Libro che consiglio, naturalmente dopo aver letto quello precedente (se no non avrebbe senso), piacevole e scorrevole.

Precisaria de ler os próximos livros para saber o final da história. Terminou sem uma resolução. Embora eu queira saber como vai terminar o conflito entre os personagens, achei a história pouco interessante, não me cativou muito. Provavelmente não lerei as continuações, pelo menos não nos próximos meses. Nota 2.5.

Esto ya lo he leído.
Christian Jacq se repite más que el ajo, pero en esta saga se supera a sí mismo. No hay un solo giro que no veas venir de lejos, los personajes son exactamente iguales a los de todos sus libros (el protagonista es una copia del de su trilogía más celebrada, Pazair de El juez de Egipto) y el lenguaje es más pomposo y artificial, si cabe, que en sus otras obras.

Definitely one for lovers of ancient Egypt. It's part of a series which makes the plot complicated to follow.

I've realised something about this series, which I am thoroughly enjoying. It has a lot in common with fan fiction. Except this is fan fiction for the discipline of Egyptology. Every time I recognise a text, an artifact or historical personage, I squee!

Iker is an excellent character because he does essentially the same things I do as an accountant.
