Love is the greatest treasure of all... Home. Samantha Carleton dreamed of such a wonderful place, somewhere permanent, somewhere safe to simply be herself. Her life wasn’t easy by any measure, traveling from place to place with her father, always to her knees in creeks and mud, hot on the trail of the next gold nugget. Danger lurked in her day to day existence, dependant upon the rough miners and greedy outlaws they encountered believing her to be a teenage boy. Ever since she budded into a beautiful young woman, Sam’s pa dressed her as male to keep her from unwanted attention. But when his love of whiskey causes him to ramble on about his ‘son’ Sam’s keen ability to locate gold, it all backfires and Sam finds herself taken hostage by the worst kind of lowdown criminals. Shortly after Sheriff Trace Wallace agrees to go undercover to find out who’s been jumping claims, he overhears a plan cooked up by two lazy greenhorn outlaws to kidnap and enslave an older boy to pan for them. Rather than see the kid who is labeled a menace about town placed in jeopardy, he offers his help in bringing Sam to heel. But Sam is no picnic to handle and in their many struggles Trace soon discovers the unruly boy is in fact a beautiful but tough woman who not only helps him bring in the bad guys, but also ensnares his heart.
I have had the desire to write since I was a little girl. Growing up in trying circumstances oftened tested my goal to do so. But once I reached a point in my life that allowed me to accomplish this dream it's been the greatest journey. I would never claim to be anything but who I am. A small town girl who enjoys sharing my stories with others. A painter creates an image to behold. A musician produces sounds to hear. But an author shares their thoughts to entertain the imagination. I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I delight in creating them. Thank you and God bless. Terri Crews
Whether it’s claim-jumpers, snakes, or a troublesome sheriff with a killer smile, Sam’s just the girl who can handle them all…
How do you get a drunken father out of a saloon? With a beehive, of course! At least that’s Sam’s solution. And so begins a very uniquely written story that overflows with wonderful dialogue and humor. I was hooked on this story in the first ten pages because of Sam. She’s a fun and feisty young lady that is always jumping off the deep end of trouble.
Author Terri Crews keeps the plot moving at a brisk pace with plenty of evil characters bent on stealing Sam’s gold. On the side of Justice is sheriff Trace Wallace who is equally determined to save Sam despite the opposition she gives him, not to mention, the well placed kick and the smack across the jaw she subjects him too. Enjoy these little snippets of dialogue and action.
“I need you to do as you’re told, Sam, as a part of the deal. I’m to see to you and I’m telling you now, obey me without argument, understand? I’ll be expected to tan your hide if you don’t and I will if I have to, so don’t make me.” ~Page 47
As soon as he turned his back, he heard her feet hit the floor. He turned just as she plowed headfirst into him. ~Page 171
Caution: Don’t buy this book if you don’t want to be compelled to read all the way to the end. Do buy this book if you love characters that will linger in your mind long after you’ve finished reading. Buy this book if you enjoy laughing out loud while reading, because all of the above will happen to you. In my humble opinion, it's well worth the risk!
For some reason, I got the impression that this book was considered a Christian Historical Romance. It's not. But the ideas were clean and I enjoyed the book's morals very much!
There is some cussing in the book (nothing too bad). There is no premarital sex that I could find (though the father did plan on spending the night with a prostitute one night when drunk). I thought this story really had a good message about finding hope. I really, really liked the scene where the hero (sorry, it's been a few days since I read the book and can't remember his name) finally confronts Sam in her father's cabin. I couldn't help laughing - thought she did have that coming!
Great book! Would love to revisit these characters.
This was a very sweet romance, probably a PG-13 rating because there is an attempted rape (did not get far) and a couple of swear words. No bedroom scenes though. It takes place in California in 1850 during the Gold Rush and I have not read many with that setting so this was a nice change. Sam has been playing a boy since she was about 15 for safety reasons as her and her dad travel about panning for gold. Dad loves her but is running from his past by drinking and letting her clean up and be the adult of the two. She is a fun character, very much a spitfire and fun to read. The hero is a second generation sheriff, so very noble and working undercover when the story starts. He is fun to watch as he makes her mad and tries to figure her out. This was a cute read and i enjoyed it very much :)
There was a lot about this story that I liked. I liked the idea of a girl hiding as a boy and finding love. I liked Trace, the lawman. I found her constant anger and fit-pitching annoying after a while. Anger isn't really that endearing or funny to me. I am glad, however, for the ending of the book. I had a bit of a problem with her description, being so small and short. I don't think enough was said to paint a good enough image early on to prevent her from becoming odd-sized in my imagination. I also liked that her father and Charlotte found love. That part was nice. Overall a good book, but not as gritty a western as I generally like.
It was really entertaining to see a girl, Samatha (Sam) hid her identity in pretending to be a boy due her father using her to seek out gold and due to his stupidity she was discover to be a good seeker of gold. When she was kidnapped and held captive by three cowboys yet one is a sheriff named Trace who seeking out for the murder, Sam was having a rough time.Yet when Trace found out Sam was a girl, things alters all together in which they found a undying love for each other. I like the other character which Sam's father found an opportunity to love again. It was good book.
I don't usually go for books marked romances, but this one was clearly a western, so I read the description. Something about made me decide to download it anyway, and I am glad I did.
The book is mostly well written, but could use some polishing. There is plenty of action combined with a nice clean love story.
A light pleasant read, which was exactly what I needed today.
Wonderful book. I don't usually like cowboy or cowgirl books, but this was an exception. It was hard for me to stop reading it. I covered 18 chapters the first night.
