DCI Cieran Black is still reeling from his last case, but when he discovers that his next assignment is in his childhood hometown of Aberdeen, he knows he needs to pursue it, despite his lingering injuries.
But when he arrives, he finds himself knee-deep in a sordid tale of murder, secrets, and even an affair. Now, he must put the pieces together quickly before the situation escalates, and he must do it all while facing the ghost of a past he can't remember.
Facing both physical injuries and broken childhood memories would be enough to throw anyone off course, but with so much at stake and his team depending on him, Cieran Black needs to stay focused... before the weight of it all pulls him under.
Book 3 and I still find the writing style difficult at times. The repetition of "the dark haired detective" or " the lead detective" is really annoying.
I always see a series through to the end, so let's see if book 4 is an improvement
I gave this book One Star, not because it deserves it, but because I wasn't sure that I could review it if I didn't give it any. It came as a shock to discover that the author was, once, a police officer. Then I realised that it didn't say that he was a police officer in Scotland, or any part of the UK. That would make some sense. I served with the former Strathclyde Police Force. We did not refer to members of the CID as "Detective". We addressed them by rank or name. We did not have CSI teams at a crime scene. We had SOCOs. We did not have a "police academy". We had the FTRC (Force Training and Recruitment Centre) at Jackton, where I was, for a time, deployed. I cannot recall having read such a load of codswallop for a long, long, time. In a relatively short book, I made 69 comments! The only saving grace was that the book contained no blasphemy.
I agree with another reviewer - the constant repetition of 'the lead detective' or the 'dark haired detective' is so annoying & unnecessary. The whole book is sloppily written. Also too many Americanisms - my pet hate - 'off of' & 'gotten', being the worst. Plot not bad. Story ok but needs editing. Won't be reading any more - too tedious.
Cieran Black goes back to work still recovering from his injury and is faced with a stinker of a case. He makes some bad decisions and upsets his crew while finding more about what happened to him as a kidnapped child. The case is solved more by accident than detective work in my view, could have been better.
