Of Seas and Sunsets: A Little Mermaid Fairy Tale Retelling

Rate this book
The witch of the sea is out for blood.
And the human prince is the key to her plans.
If he doesn’t undo her first.

Orsana has a plan. And the prince is at the heart of it. She must make sure the mermaid princess, who is disguised as prince’s intended, marries the unsuspecting heir to the human throne, driving the sea king to declare war. Then Orsana will have everything she ever wanted. Death. Destruction. Power.

Vengeance.

All she has to do is maintain her disguise as the maid and not fall for the handsome human prince. The prince, whose simmering gaze makes her feel like a damn goddess of the sea. She quickly finds that some things are easier planned than done.

Revenge is a powerful motivator.

But desire is stronger.

Of Seas and Sunsets is a slow-burn, steamy, dark fantasy retelling of The Little Mermaid. It is part of a collection of standalone stories that reimagine the roles of the villains and the heroes. If you like dark witches and the princes who can't help but fall for them, then this book is for you! Perfect for fans of Tessonja Odette and Jennifer L. Armentrout.

ARC Review: This book exceeded my expectations! As someone who grew up loving the little mermaid story and being obsessed with prince Eric, this retelling was EXACTLY what I wanted and needed as an adult. The additions and twists to the story and its characters were excellent. I enjoyed every part of this new take on a classic story.

I love love love retailing! And with this being a retailing of my favorite movie I was all in. I love that there's a twist about this book though. I mean we all love Ariel a Little mermaid, but what about the sea witch. Does she not deserve love too. So it is twisted into her and her story about the kraken and the prince. Which Was fantastic.

Malekai is the prince and he runs the family business of killing krakens and harvesting them for food, oil and alot of other stuff. Then you have Orsana she is the sea witch. She makes a deal with the mermaid to give her the life of being a human and falling in love with the prince Malachi thinking that she was going to take down his kingdom. But does that happen?

Rewinding.... Malekai goes to the sea witch to save his father, the sea which puts a spell on him and tells him " you will only remember how good our first 🌶️ was in the sand"
So now he thinks he made love to a sea witch but doesn't remember anything else.
But the seas witch didn't do what she said she was going to do and his father died. So now he is starting to remember her cause she is there with the mermaid. Does he forgive her and marry the mermaid or does uf go the other way.

I will definitely be reading ALL these books in the series. Especially because they're all standalone and retails of Disney movies. I love the way this book played out, I love the twisted turns in, this author topped the cake with this one!

If you haven't read her retailing of Disney movies you need too right away! There wasn't that much spicy in this book but the part that does makes you feel warm inside. Great read!!!

Ohhh I liked this so much!!

The Little Mermaid has always been one of my favourite Disney movies as a child, so obviously I love any and all retellings of this tale. However, as I grew up I more and more fell in love with the morally grey villains in books, so #OfSeasAndSunsets for me was the perfect mix of two of my favourite things. 🥰

We get to experience the tale from a different POV in which we know the sea witch (Orsana) was slighted and cursed by the merking and Ariel (here Arista) is the naive little child she actually always has been. I loved experiencing this story from Orsana's POV and find she's (maybe unintentionally) funny.😂
Right when Arista is transformed into a human we get this gem:

"Oh yes. Air. Orsana forgot about that minor complication." 😂

But Orsana is also so much more than that. She is a woman who was not only wronged, but assaulted and cursed, a witch with powerful magic, a friend to sea creatures, a person who fights for those who can't and a mother set out to revenge. And at the end of the day she is also a woman who simply cannot fight against her own feelings no longer.

And Malekai? He's a grieving son, a prince that is desperate and powerless, a future king that is completely lost and a man who falls hard and deep for a woman he can't have and shouldn't want. And yes, he falls first and he falls harder. ❤️

This retelling was just so good! With twists I didn't see coming, new extras to the story, with feeling and betrayal and love and friendship and revenge and battle and trust.
I enjoyed this story a lot and I'd love to read more from this author in the future. 🥰

I absolutely love this Little Mermaid retelling! Love that the FMC is the villain (and she’s not even really the villain, let’s be honest) and morally grey and then you get an MMC who exudes cinnamon roll vibes! They pair so well together in this story.

For starters, Malekai is one of my favourite names and yes I know it’s used a lot but I still love it and second of all, I just love Malekai! He’s such a good prince and kind soul, who cares about people. 😍 And wow let me talk about Orsana….I feel for her so much. She honestly wasn’t even the villain, she was wronged, betrayed and hurt that I understand how she became the way she is. I love how the relationship between the Malekai and Orsana developed and it was beautiful!

I honestly think this is one of my favourite Little Mermaid tellings! So much love for J. Ann Curtis, cause this book is just amazing!

A Fairytale retelling or reimagining will always be one of my favourite kinds of stories.
The dynamics between Prince Malekai & Orsana were top tier. I loved watching their relationship unfold.
He calls her spider lily *swoon*
A forbidden romance. A prince and a sea witch.
There were a couple moments that sent me into a fit of giggles.
You learn something new everyday, like mermaid anatomy ❤️‍🔥
Other moments my heart sank and broke.
Political intrigue is a major theme of this book. The contrast between the beliefs and lore held by the Helonese and the Lamori was an intriguing undertone to the story.
This was a gorgeously written book.

Moments
🧜‍♀️ Oh frailty, thy name is man.
🧜‍♀️ But even on land, mermaids didn’t cry.

Oh my goodness!

I'm all emotional. This book is the perfect retelling! It takes the original elements of the story and goes deeper whilst also managing to be original enough to stand alone without the association of the little mermaid story we love.

And I do love it. At some point (around 70%) my inner child and nerdy adult merged in the most bittersweet happiness. I wish I could detail every single point that was just the perfect wink whilst being uniquely more without spoiling the story.

J Ann Curtis just became an autobuy author for me - Of Curses and Moonlight is also great.

I had SO much fun with this one!

I didn’t know what to expect when I started this one, but I know I left it on a standing ovation.

And so much of that is thanks to an incredible anti-heroine.

I loved Orsana. She carried a heavy weight in her heart, one filled with despair, rage, and anger. And all of it with good reason. So she chooses to create plan to enact vengeance, but goes in blindly to all this will encumber. She sets her sight to the presumed evil doing on both land and sea. Part of this plan includes the human prince, and it is he who will unravel it all.

Her expectations of who the human prince is are shattered when she sees the real him. A man devoted to his people, loyal to his duty, and desperate to keep footing when it seems his role can be stripped away at any time. His position is precarious and what once Orsana saw as cowardice, she soon finds his actions are carefully crafted to ensure the least amount of blood spilt. He’s trying, far more than the sea witch would have ever anticipated.

And that changes everything for Orsana. The second her heart is opened, the course of her life finds new, unexpected direction.

But when the truth is revealed— what will that mean for the prince, and what consequences will Orsana have to face?

The plot develops steadily, every turn of the page filled me with anticipation of what was yet to come. There are unexpected twists that had me clutching my pearls! I was just aaaah! I was all in! I was engaged! I was obsessed with this book more than I ever guessed I would be! I know it’s a bunch of exclamation points but it’s the best way to detail how I was feeling throughout this journey! !!!

I very much enjoyed it! If I had a quibble it was feeling too many transformations took place in the final act, throwing the pacing off a bit, but honestly— what a nitpick that feels like to say, when it never deterred my devotion to this book.

I just so wholly enjoyed it, y’all!

If you love fairytale retellings with a twist, do me a favor: read this one asap! You’ll love it!

Now excuse me while I go peruse the rest of J. Ann Curtis’ works, because I need more!

Thank you MTMCT Tours and J. Ann Curtis for this complimentary copy, I leave this honest review voluntarily.

“The black curtains in the room hung straight and still, with all the solemn gloom of a burial shroud.”

I love a good fairytale retelling. I love the ways that an author can take a story we all know so well and turn it on its head to tell a different story. This Little Mermaid retelling focuses on the Sea Witch, named Orsana in this story - a mermaid who has been cursed to live as a kraken whenever she is outside her home in the water. She weaves a web of lies and deception around her, ensnaring everyone around her. From the mermaid Princess Arista, who she convinces to help her with a plan to deceive the human Crown Prince Malakai by marrying him to claim a powerful object, to Malakai himself. Along the way, Orsana’s lies begin to outrun her and all of their lives are in danger on all fronts.

I loved the way Orsana interacted with those around her, though she was being dishonest she held true care for Arista, and later Malakai. She had hidden trauma that drove her actions and made her that villain that we love, instead of hate. Malakai’s own damage causes him to behave rashly sometimes and he is not quick to trust others as his crown is always at risk of the schemers around him. The friendship that grows between him and Orsana, and even Arista, was fun to watch blossom.

I thoroughly enjoyed this retelling of one of my favourite stories - and I loved the nods to the original tale - including turning to sea foam!

Move over Ariel, because Orsana is here to show us what happens when a mermaid with a vengeance takes center stage! In Of Seas and Sunsets, we’re thrown into a twisted, steamy retelling of The Little Mermaid where our leading lady is more interested in death and destruction than in collecting forks and singing about love.

Orsana’s grand plan? Trick a prince into marrying a disguised mermaid princess, spark a war between land and sea, and reign supreme in chaos. Simple, right? Well, that was the idea—until the prince turned out to have smoldering looks that could melt glaciers and eyes that make her question her life choices (and who wouldn’t when those choices involve murder and mayhem?).

The slow-burn romance is like waiting for a storm to hit, with each look and stolen touch building the tension between Orsana and the prince. It’s all about revenge until those pesky human emotions start creeping in, and let me tell you, watching Orsana try to stay on her wicked path while battling undeniable chemistry is deliciously entertaining.

This isn’t your childhood fairy tale—expect darkness, desire, and a splash of danger. If you love cunning witches, unsuspecting princes, and a plot filled with betrayal and passion, Of Seas and Sunsets is the deep dive you’ve been waiting for. Just don’t blame me when you start rooting for the villain!

If Curtis writes a villain retelling, I'm going to read it. Plain and simple.

She does an amazing job at making "the bad guy" the one that appears morally superior (or at least morally justified), and writes those characters SO well that you are angry when they are angry and hurt when they are hurt.

I loved Orsana as a FMC. She was diabolical at the beginning, but honestly....she deserved to be (see what I mean). She wasn't just angry though, oh no, she was brilliant about it. Talk about someone who knows how to enact a plan and even her backup plans have plans. But what I always value in a main character is the ability to self reflect and change. And Orsana's journey of overcoming her grief and anger was beautiful.

Malekai is a cute lil nugget. He is also angry and alone. Cunning and smart. Really, already a perfect match. I love that he was also able to show his strength when it came to pushing back and doing the right thing.

This story was so fun to read and enjoy. The reader Is brought in from the very beginning and Curtis doesn't let us go until the very end.

This is a standalone book!

Overall: recommend!

"Of Seas and Sunsets" is a captivating Little Mermaid retelling with a twist.

What if Prince Eric fell in love with Ursula? What if Ursula wasn't really the villain, but just a woman seeking revenge on the evil sea king?

The Sea King, King Pontus, placed a curse on Orsana, forcing her to take the form of a kraken while in the sea. Orsana devises a plan to help the Sea King's own daughter marry the human prince she loves.

Prince Malekai is expected to marry a woman he's never met, let alone one he doesn't love. While preparing for the wedding, he's also trying to prevent a civil war from breaking out in his kingdom.

As the story unfolds, Orsana and Malekai's desire for one another grows, and they eventually fall in love.

Before reading "Of Seas and Sunsets," I had never encountered a Little Mermaid retelling. I can honestly say that I doubt any other Little Mermaid retelling could surpass this one! The storytelling was beautiful, and I was hooked from the first chapter. Orsana's redemption arc was masterfully crafted, and I admire how Prince Malekai stayed true to himself even when pressured to look the other way. The ending left me emotional in the best way imaginable!

Holy smokes! I absolutely loved it so much! I absolutely adore every book I've read by this author! I see her name and I immediately get it to read! I am absolutely obsessed with the way she retells the classics! This was a little mermaid retelling! But the villian gets the prince. So in this case, Ursula! But is she really the villian? It's spicy and emotional and I'm obsessed every time. The world building, the writing, it makes for such a wonderful story! I can't wait for more from this author!

Love this adult little mermaid retelling. It's dark, spicy, and I loved the chemistry between the prince and Orsana, the sea witch.
I liked that this showed a different side to the mermaid and prince pairing and the king of the sea, and Orsana was an anti-heroine.
I enjoyed that Malekai wasn't arrogant too and he actually wanted to make a change and help his people.
It's a fun twisted retelling.

Of Seas and Sunsets is a dark fairytale retelling of The Little Mermaid told in dual POV from the perspective of Orsana, the sea witch and mermaid cursed to turn into a kraken whenever she leaves her home and the Lamori Prince Malekai. To claim her revenge against the Sea King, King Pontus, she tricks his daughter, Arista, into becoming a human to marry the prince.

Political intrigue, spice, romance, vengeance, warring kingdoms, magic this story has it all! It took me a little bit to get into the story but once I did it was so good. I will say I think some of the side characters could use a little bit more development, but the world building and back story was excellent. I also found the leap from like to love between Orsana and Malekai slightly unbelievable (because a story about mermaids in a fictional world is totally believable 😂) and the spicy scene when she’s a mermaid was a little…weird but the plot kept me intrigued with all the twists and turns. Along with that I appreciated the references to the original story from the 1800s and the Disney version.

If you like dark fairytale retellings or The Little Mermaid, I definitely recommend this book!

Tropes/Triggers: Spicy, Falling for the Villain/Enemies to Lovers, Little Mermaid Retelling, Villain Redemption, He falls first, Sea Monsters, Witches, Child Loss

Such a good book. I didn't realize that this was part of a series of retellings, but now I have to go and read the first one. They seem like they're standalones, so that's a good thing, because I jumped right into this one.

So, I love the idea of a wicked witch gets the prince vibe, and this story embodies all of that. Orsana, the 'wicked witch' in this story is out for revenge against the Prince's bloodline. Disguised as the maid of his false intended, Orsana tries her hardest to focus on her task, but she can't resist the attraction that she has for the prince. Malekai, is the king intended, though he didn't want to be, since his father's death he has focused on one thing-- getting the kingdom freedom from the real people who seem to rule the throne. But with all the dangers that loom in the background he decides to take a step back once the princess comes... The only thing that he can't seem to take a step away from is her maid. After he recalls a previous night where they met, the images that she put into his head are seared into his memory.

For a retelling, this was very good. I loved the idea of it being a swap, and J. Ann Curtis such a great job with the characters, the descriptions of the scenarios, and so much more. It was so easy to immerse myself into the book and get lost, and I finished it in a few hours.

💬: “But even on land, mermaids didn’t cry..”

Read it if you like:
✔️ Romantasy
✔️ The little mermaid retelling (but twisty, steamy and fierce FMC)
✔️ Slow burn
✔️ He falls first
✔️ Mermaids, kings, witches, magical creatures/elements
✔️ He calls her ''spider lily''

''Of Seas and Sunsets is a slow-burn, steamy, dark fantasy retelling of The Little Mermaid. It is part of a collection of standalone stories that reimagine the roles of the villains and the heroes. My thoughts: Little mermaid WHO?! haha Orsana is absolutely the type of FMC that I love: fierce and brave, has goals and dreams, revenge plans and she ACTS on it! She's such a powerful being and she doesn't apologize for it, on contraire: she embraces her strength and uses that to her own benefit and I love that for her! I hate when FMC's are powerful but afraid to show it or to use such powers! I also loved how Malekai is a MMC who breaks himself free from the shackles of weird traditions and thinks about his people first, then... he falls first (and hard) for Orsana giving us the most swoony, steamy and powerful couple we could ask for. It's a book about power, family bonds, love, desire and things that are beyond the ''simple romance book''. This book is so special, I loved every minute of this journey!

To take revenge on the sea king and the humans, Orsana needs the power of the coral crown, which only appears during the coronation of the new human queen. Orsana then fakes the identity of the mermaid princess, Arista, to make her marry the human prince, Malekai, in order to drive a war between the sea king and humans. Disguised as Arista's servant, Orsana's plan must take a turn because not everything is according to her expectations, including falling in love with the prince

I’ve really been into the mermaid retellings these days and this one was not what I expected, a wonderful retelling with loads of new perspectives! this was a good read with action-packed, twists and turns, and a morally gray FMC. there are battles, magic, character growth, and the ending was good. I love the interactions between Orsana and Malekai, they're so perfect for each other like dark and light, and it's really nice to read and feel the chemistry between them. and I'm not that into a nickname, but I love the nickname Malekai gave her: Spider Lily. fun and page turner, a great enemies to lovers twist on Little mermaid!

This brilliant retelling of The Little Mermaid, but with a wonderful twist about the sea witch in whose perspective the story is told, is such a compelling read. I couldn't put it down and had to know how Orsana would resolve the massive mess she landed in and helped to worsen.

Of Seas and Sunsets offers a wonderful redemption arc for the sea witch, while also taking a very powerful look at the consequences of seeking vengeance, and why wanting to do so can be detrimental to a person and everyone around them. I also appreciated the author's candid exploration of power, what we believe about power, and how we can be misled because of those beliefs. I enjoyed having a "powerful" character, like Prince Malekai turn out to be anything but, and how he made the best of things despite everything stacked against him.

The twists and turns were unexpected, and there were definitely details I did not see coming. I highly recommend this to any who enjoy fairytale retellings and want something fresh and new with good worldbuilding and an interesting cast of characters. Romantasy readers who'd like something a little different with a good slow burn enemies-to-lovers will also enjoy this spicy read.

Of Seas and Sunsets by J. Ann Curtis

Of Seas and Sunsets is a retelling of The Little Mermaid from the perspective of Orsana, the sea witch. It’s a dual POV between Orsana and Malekai, the prince, and what happens when she is so filled with vengeance and revenge that she sets in motion a plan to destroy everyone who has wronged her.

It took me a few chapters to really get into this book, but once I did I had a hard time putting it down! Orsana, at first, seemed like a character that I wasn’t going to be able to relate to, but I am so happy to be wrong. I found myself sympathizing with her story and rooting for her to get her revenge anyway she could. She is a very complex character who has been written beautifully in this retelling and I thoroughly enjoyed her tale. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the villain and finding out what happens when, at first glance, things aren’t always what they seem to make them as such. I was provided a copy of this book aand all opinions are my own.

“Those moments when I wasn’t supposed to want you, but I did. Those are the moments that made me fall in love with you.”

4 ⭐️

Malakai seeks revenge for his brother’s death, hunting kraken and profiting off of them for his kingdom.

Orsana, a sea witch, is a kraken herself who is also out for revenge on the sea king who has stolen everything from her.

She creates a plan to take the sea king’s daughter, Arista, to land and convince Malakai to marry her. Thus granting Orsana the opportunity to get her revenge.

But as Malakai gets to know both ladies, his pull towards one will change the trajectory of many lives.

His life and the lives of the people in his kingdom are at stake.

What to expect:
🧜🏼‍♀️ Mermaids, kraken, and other sea creatures
👑 Forbidden romance
🧜🏼‍♀️ Forced marriage
👑 Little mermaid retelling
🧜🏼‍♀️ Secret identity

In this unique twist on The Little Mermaid, the author creates an entire new world where the villain is not who we thought she was and that happily ever after doesn’t have to be perfect or make sense to anyone else.
