Paranormal Security and Intelligence Operative Duke Marlow has a new mission: find, interrogate and possibly eliminate the target—Mercy Deluca. He knows looks can be deceiving, but it’s hard to believe the beautifully quirky woman running around in a superhero t-shirt is a viable threat. The sexy little biomedical engineer quickly proves she is more than he bargained for and Intel has it all wrong—she’s not the enemy. Far from it. Intel also forgot to mention one vital piece of information—she’s Duke’s mate. This immortal alpha werewolf doesn’t take kindly to her being in danger.

When Mercy accepted a position within The Corporation she thought it was to help cure disease and to make a difference for mankind. She had no idea what her new career path truly entailed—monsters masquerading under the guise of scientific research. Unable to stomach the atrocities she’s uncovered, she reaches out through what she hopes is the proper channels, asking for help. Mercy gets more than she bargains for when a team of paranormal hotties shows up on her doorstep ready to take down The Corporation. One in particular seems to be able to get under skin, both aggravating her and exciting her in ways she can’t explain.

Okay, this is an exact quote from my last review:

If I have to read about one more alpha caveman playboy asshole who only falls in love with the snowflake virgin girl who saved herself just for him, I will probably puke. .

Now, here are a few quotes from this book:

The guy's name is Duke. He's a werewolf shifter.
"Want to talk about a ladies' man," Striker said, pointing to Duke. "Right there. Big time."
Duke wore the label with pride.

Regarding how much respect he felt for the thousands of women he had slept with:
He was open with them all, telling them firmly he was only in it to get off, nothing more.

Sorry, girls. He found his mate now and is taken. You won't have the privilege of "getting him off".

Now, here are a few tidbits about his new mate, Mercy:

People had told her more than once in her life that she was very different - an out of the box thinker. Her I.Q. was off the charts.

She'd held on to her virginity for far too long... now she found the man she wanted to hand herself over to. Too bad she'd only just met him...

Don't worry, they had sex and professed their undying love for each other within 24 hours. It was about as romantic as bathroom sex.

This was free on Amazon, so if you want a quick and smutty read with a few chuckles, go for it. If you are looking for something great... keep looking. As for me, I'm going to go puke now.

The Grump and the Geek!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💚🖤💙💜💜
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌏
Character development: 😠😘🤓😉

The heroine: Mercy Deluca - she is a biomedical engineer for Donavon Dynamics Corporation. She grew up in foster homes and thought she would be helping people but instead found out she was working for cruel men and women who used their position to experiment on others. They barbarically tortured and committed other atrocities in the name of research.

The Hero: Duke Marlow - An alpha werewolf and a Paranormal Security and Intelligence Operative, Duke is a grumpy male with a reluctance to accept change. He typed with two fingers and couldn’t for the life of him, figure out the phone system in the office. His boss also keeps extra cell phones in his office for when Duke loses his temper.

The Story: When a woman kept calling the office and finally said she might be in danger before hanging up, Duke was unsure of what to do since he had no clue how calls were routed or how to find the woman that called. Though he felt something about the woman that he couldn’t define.

Mercy knew that the corporation she worked for was doing shady business and she wants to help the men that are being experimented on so much that they eventually died. She does her best to help them without getting caught herself, but is very worried every time she comes and go from her office, just waiting to get pulled aside and killed.

Duke is grumpy, growly and easy to anger. He is so cute in his grumpiness that you can’t help but like him. Mercy is small, geeky and cute in her naivety. They make a great pair and are both so interesting. The book is told in dual points of view via solo narration. The narration is done by Mason Lloyd who does a great job and is easy to listen to. I really liked the story and the romance.

Mercy and Duke

Dr. Mercy Deluca is a scientist at Donavon Dynamics Corporation, Paris. When she witnesses the abuse Test Subject 87P suffers, she follows his instructions and contacts the Paranormal Security and Intelligence Operation (PSI-Ops). Corbin Jones, head of PSI-Ops, and operatives Duke Marlow, Striker McCracken and Boomer Walsh arrive just in time to save Mercy from assassins. Duke realizes immediately that Mercy is his mate. Mercy just knows she is seriously attracted to him.

Corbin and the operatives with Mercy rush in to save Test Subject 87P (James Hagan), who is badly hurt and not healing properly. Can they save him in time? Will they be able to bring down the Corporation? Can Duke keep Mercy out of danger?

We know that Duke hates everything but loves Mercy. We learn Mercy is a pixie mix but nothing else about her. Mercy wants to save the test subjects, both animal and supernatural. I feel the characters could have been further developed. Perhaps in the other books in the series the characters are more fleshed out. The plot is well thought out. There is adult language and explicit sex in this novel.

2.5 stars.

I love the plot. I challenge another author to take this plot and do it better.

The Plot
A technical genius woman doctor (I think PhD) is working in a mysterious scientific organization when she sees a test subject being beaten by a guard. She starts to notice more and more violence, but it's too late for her to do anything without being in danger herself. She teams up with one of the test subjects who tells her how to call in a secret paranormal black ops group to save them all.

The team of paranormals have been working together for centuries and each has a specialty. When the doctor calls in, the man who answers is attracted to her voice. He turns out to be her mate. They end up meeting up and breaking the test subjects out together, bringing mayhem and violence to the villains. And the woman is an integral part of getting into the facility.
----
Sounds great, right!? Well, the devil is in the details and the details in this book are NOT GOOD.
----
1. Toxic masculinity.
a. Ultra macho men who are ginormous.
b. Every SINGLE man is a manwhore. They sleep with every thing in sight. Even when they are under a time crunch to save the test subjects, they hit a cafe where they pick up women's phone numbers.

2. Awful depictions of sex everywhere
a. Every time there's any "sexy" time, I wanted to puke... here are a few quotes:
"He could already smell her cream" (gross)
"In the supernatural world, it wasn't uncommon for females to save themselves for their mtes. He liked that his mate had done that" (ya... while he was sleeping with women left and right)
"Duke thrust a finger into her, tearing through her virginal barrier" (uh... and this is their first time when they're not in a private place)
"he came in jetting waves"
b. a strange woman grabs the hero's erect penis... in a cafe... with lots of other people around. He's erect cause he smells his mate, but why the author normalizes sexual assault in this book is beyond me.

3. The heroine is supposed to be smart; however,
a. she acts like a ditz. When she knows she's in danger, she puts on sound cancelling headphones (that she doctored to make them truly ALL sound cancelling) and dances around her apartment, packing her "go" bag. When the hero comes up behind her, she doesn't react. And doesn't really make sense throughout the whole first fight. And everyone's like "aww, how cute. She's a little crazy"
b. when they storm the facility, the hero tells her to stay behind. They're in the middle of a gun fight, so it makes sense that she waits until the rest of them clear the area. But no, she's "made a promise" so she runs and opens the door. A bad dude grabs her and bangs her against the floor and wall so hard, he almost kills her.

There's more... but I'll stop there.

Fun quick paranormal romance. The chirpy heroine was fun. I liked the way she babble when she was nervous. The grumpy hero was fun too. I felt the paranormal world could have been developed a bit more but what was there was clear enough. The fated mates thing was OTT in a fun way. I could have done without the heroine being quite so babbly about I might read more in the series if I need a quick fated mates type read.

If this book hadn’t been funny I probably wouldn’t have finished it.

But it was funny, I really enjoyed it, and it’s free right now on kindle.

So what are you waiting for?

Anyways, Duke is our alpha male wolf who is part of a super secret paranormal military team. His interactions with his unit made the book for me. All the men on his team are shifters. One of their own has gone missing, and they receive intel to recover him.

Mercy is a scientist who discovers too late she’s working for an evil corporation. She is determined to free her test subjects, and her favorite test subject gives her contact info to free them. Unfortunately she forgot to give them the code that let them know she was on their side, so the unit thinks she is their main target.

Whoops.

The plot is straightforward, the romance is a “mate” situation, which isn’t alway my favorite but it does work here.

I just loved reading the guy pick on each other. One of the teammates who is a panther shifter got drunk and passed out in panther form. So what do they do? They take him to a zoo and throw him in the panther exhibit. So he wakes up hungover with a bunch of female panthers trying to make him their mate.

If you didn’t find that funny, you probably won’t like this book.

Duke and Mercy

First book for the Immortal PSI-OPS, Act of Mercy

I originally thought that Duke and his team will be the same as the I-Ops but they aren't.. There may be similarities but you can still see that they are different and this series meant they have something to offer that will get you more hooked in the Immortal Ops Universe. 😲😲😲😲

Mercy is too funny, the way she babbled when she is nervous or stressed. The questions that came out of her mouth was so hilarious.. 😂😂

Fave Quote:
“Captain, I think Duke is beggin’ for a mission that leaves us parachuting in. Face your fears. Live dangerously. Be a man. Okay, be a wolf-man.”

Another good read 👍👍

STORY:
I am in love the with this whole organization of special ops paranormal shifters. All the personalities were entertaining and their chemistry as a team was so good.

The Good
Love Duke, grumpy as hell. But if I lived centuries without a mate and hate technology, I would be too. He is sexy and appealing and love the way his inner beast reacts to finding his mate. Mercy is the ultimate nerd, but a sexy nerd. Her corky attitude complimented Dukes grumpiness.

The Bad
The author took too long bringing the characters together. As much as I was entertained by the whole team as they made me laugh, I kept thinking, why am I still waiting for them to connect. I didn’t like that they mated at the end of the book. Granted they were on a rescue mission and in danger but shouldn’t have thrown it in at the end because of how long they came together in the beginning of the book.

CHEMISTRY:
Duke’s Insta obsession and possessiveness was appealing once he found his mate. The physical wasn’t bad, but would have liked more.

SECONDARY CHARACTERS:
I LOVE this team, Stryker, Boomer, Corbin and James. I am curious about their story and planning on reading them. (I listen to the audio, so hope spelled their names right).

Overall, I was truly entertained. Didn’t like how long I had to wait on the characters to interact. The secondary characters gave this book a nice appeal as well.

****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.

I read the Immortal Ops series a few years ago, well the first few books. I thought I would be fine reading this one as it is a side series, I really should have read the remaining books in the other series first. There are spoilers here if you have not read them.

This is the other team that does basically the same work as Immortal Ops. just more born shifters here. Plus these guys have been around much longer. They have a great dynamic and banter as a team. I can not wait to read all of them finding mates.

This story, from what I can tell, pieces together things after the last I-Ops events. Even though this is a novella, the world building is great, well if you are familiar with the other series. This does catch things up nicely, as I said it was a few years ago and this give a slight refresher of events. I kind of like this team better, they have more of a playfulness about them.

Duke is one of my favorites right off the bat! I love the he is a Luddite and is matched with a techie genius!! Gotta love opposites attracting! Mercy is very like-able and it is fun trying to follow her rambling when nervous. There are a few times when it seems too much, she just becomes a caricature of a nerdy girl.

Yummy smexy time!! Oh yeah!! The steam is great, could have used more, but it is a short read. It fits in with the whole true mates insta lust/love theme of the series. I have no problem with that, it is quite common in paranormal reads. It cuts down on too much chit chat before the steamy action.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Mason Lloyd, who is delicious!! He as several accents to tackle, doing a great job of keeping them distinct and consistent. His pace is swift, which I typically love, but had to slow down on the accents, it was tough to clearly get the words when listening at warp speed. He is totally understandable and delightful at normal listening speed.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can not wait to read the rest of the team. The books are very connected to the other series, so I do suggest reading those first. It will help you understand the world, events and the characters. Too bad the first 4 are only in ebook. Fingers crossed audio is on the way soon, I cold use a refresher listen myself.

Disclosure – I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts opinions and ratings are my own. I was under no obligation to post a review or give positive feedback.

*** I hope this review was useful to you and helped your decision to read or not read this book. I love reading and sharing my opinions with other readers. I listen at double speed; all my impressions of the narration are from that setting. Thanks for taking the time to read my review!

*Book source ~ Kindle Lending Library

Duke Marlow works for Paranormal Security and Intelligence Operatives (PSI-Ops). He’s also an Alpha werewolf. Alive for a couple hundred years, he hates change. Well, he hates pretty much everything and everybody. Especially technology. When he and his team are sent to Paris to watch a Dr. Mercy Deluca, learn everything she knows about the capture and detention of a former teammate and then eliminate her, Duke takes one look at her picture and suddenly decides she must not die. Confused about his gut feelings it isn’t until he meets her face-to-face that he realizes she’s his mate. And no way will he allow her to be in any danger. They may need her to extract James Hagan, but that doesn’t mean he has to like it. This mission could possibly be the death of him.

Ok, I have a favorite new author. When I picked this story up through the Kindle Lending Library, I knew it was a book 1 in a series. What I didn’t know was that it’s a spin off from another series. Of course, being the way I am that means I need to go back and read the books from the original series, but not just because of my series reading quirks. I need to do it because I love this story. It’s fast-paced, quirky and full of humor. It has many paranormal elements and some steamy stuff. The characters could use a bit more oomph in their personalities, but for the length of this story I’ll take what was put out there about them. Duke is a curmudgeon and Mercy is a feisty nerd. They’re great together! All I have left to say is: I want more!

Hmm, I don’t really know how I feel. I loved Duke and his team. Their back and forth is what made the book for me. They are total guys ribbing back and forth. I like banter 100% of the time.

Mercy is a character I am not sure I like all the way, I think I need more time for her to grow on me. For this reason, I wished the book had been longer so we could really get a sense of who she is because I feel like we are missing out on a really great character.

Loved the narration. Mason Lloyd is yum. I can’t explain his voice better than that. ;)

This was kind of fun. I went into it with pretty low expectations, so I am pleasantly surprised.

The one thing I can't believe though is that this book is supposed to have 410 pages according to Goodreads. Never! More like 200 pages, because I was done with this pretty quickly.

A great story if you love steamy sex involving shifters.

Dr. Mercy Deluca works for The Corporation, but doesn't realize what they are doing to animals and other creatures. When she meets Jimmy, she realizes that he will die if she doesn't do something to rescue him.

Enter PSI-Ops.....including Mercy's mate, Duke. Lots of testosterone involved in this one (to be expected from a shifter book). Mercy doesn't understand what is involved in being a shifter's mate, but she is soon to find out.

Lots of action and tons of steam sex. The narrator did a great job in his performance. I was given a copy of this audiobook by the narrator/publisher/writer and chose to review it.

I do think this was borderline cheesy, but I still may check out the next book in the series. I don't know. The guys just didn't have that oomph that I prefer. I love the dates mates trope but this one veered more towards instant love, which I realize I am not a fan of. I enjoyed the friendships and bonds that the guys had with each other. It was also funny in a few parts, enough that I audibly laughed.

This review and more can be seen at http://gothicmoms.blogspot.com/

Once readers pick this book up they will not be able to put it down until the very end. Non-stop action from one page to the next that will leave you questioning the advances that have been made in the name of science, and just how far some may be wiling to go to further it along even more.

Dr. Mercy Deluca has never had much of a social life nor any type of real family. Hopping along from one foster home after the next growing up, the only thing she always had to rely up was her intelligence. So when she is offered a job within The Corporation, a biometric engineering research facility looking for ways to improve humanity, she's more than excited when offered an important role within their establishment. Not learning that the true nature of their research was by far anything but humane. In way too deep to simply just walk away, she puts in a call for help bringing down The Corporation. Problem is, the person who answers only offers to her is help with some anal probing.

Duke Marlow hates pretty much everything this day and age has to offer; the technology of it and airplanes most of all. Everything that is besides his job and his brothers-in-arms. But one phone call, or rather several irritating small ones, will turn his world upside down. One of his brothers, a werewolf named James, has been off the grid for a decade now. When intel comes in that is so encrypted their own techs can just barely decipher it, one part of the message comes through very loud and clear, James is being held captive. Duke and all of the other shifters know all to well what that usually means, he is being tortured. One vital piece of the intel also leaves them questioning the whether the sender is friend or foe. Duke's instincts tell him it is the latter, a feeling he must hold onto because his is screaming, MINE.

Mandy M. Roth creates a picture like quality within the minds eye. Every page is filled with wit and humor that will have readers laughing so loud anyone around them will be thinking they have lost their minds, fun, love, violence, diabolical masterminds, characters to captivate the readers heart and deeply heated love scenes that will leave steam coming off the page. A must read for any Paranormal Romance lover who loves the heat as well as the action.

REVIEW:
I loved how the Psi-Ops team bantered and interacted with each other. I laughed out loud several times and even though the dark menacing danger and action swirled around, I had a smile on my face. A very nice spin-off from the Immortal Ops series and I can’t wait to read about the others in the group. True to form, there was page turning danger and page melting sex. I did find some of the description of who and what got a little tedious but it did not detract from the overall story and my need to finish it in one sitting. Totally enjoyable.

I was looking through my books for something fun to read and came across Act of Mercy. I love Duke. So much fun. Actually, I loved all the characters. The perfect group. Fate picked the perfect mate in Mercy for Duke. The geek and the warrior who hates everything including computers. Perfect. Lots and lots of action. Which you would expect in a book of this type. Even though, that is not always the case. I always love Mandy Roth's books. So far she has not disappointed me. Always and adventure. I'm very excited to read about the other guys in the group. They've all been around for so long, you know the story will be amazing. Mercy being on the mission to save James was wonderful. Everyone was pleasantly surprised. Including Mercy. One thing I thought was not necessary was Mercy's question about Duke not saving himself for her. He's at least 100 years old and a man (sorry). There is no way he would have saved himself for a mate that he could only hope was in his future. It just seemed like wasted energy on Mercy's part. I don't want to give too much away, but look forward to reading more about her and Duke. Highly recommend. Enjoy!

Good reading

Mercy was a doctor at a research facility but she realized that they were doing horrible studies on humans DNA with animals. Duke was part of a paranormal security unit and he was a wolf shifter. When Duke saw Mercy his wolf knew she was his mate even though the group thought she was part of the target at first. So when Mercy and Duke met their interesting and exciting romance began an adventure full of danger, intrigue, secrets and handful of a pixie for one wolf to tame. Exciting read

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I enjoyed the characters in this book. I would recommend this book to others. It was as a fun, quirky read.

2.5 stars, I think. Part of me wonders if I've just read too many of this type of story lately and I am growing bored with it. Insta-love is INCREDIBLY hard to pull off, even mates recognizing their other half is hard to pull off, so this just, I didn't really feel it. I liked the characters, the guys, the team. Mercy was kind of obnoxious, I know she's "brilliant" and "different" or whatever, but the conversations and stuff were like.... Whhhhhaaaaaa?
It is a pretty quick book, I think the author did nicely give glimpses into the other characters and made you want their story also.

I love that this book gives us a better look into the PSI Ops side of the Immortal Ops World. The story has everything you've come to expect from a Mandy Roth story - action, love, friendship, and some humor mixed in. Duke's relationship with technology greatly amuses me.

And yet another 5 star read. I love finding these books. This is a paranormal about a group of shifters who work for a rather secretive group of basically immortals who run into trouble. In this particular book they are set on rescuing James, a retired member of their group who has been captured by a real evil conglomerate who like to experiment and torture shifters, trying to create some type of super human immortal soldiers. They have received communication that he is being held prisoner in France and they head there to the rescue.

One of the team members is Duke Marlow, a real grumpy wolf shifter whose been around several hundreds of years and the hero of this book.

The heroine is Mercy Deluca, a brilliant and quirky biomedical engineer. She works at the facility that is holding James prisoner and once she realizes what evil is being committed, she is determined to rescue James and as many other prisoners as she can. She’s the one who sent the group the information though she neglected to tell them she’s one of the good guys. So it’s not clear to the rescue team whose side she’s on. But when Duke sees her picture he knows she’s on their team and oh, she’s his mate, something he didn’t think he’d ever find.

And when they finally meet in person, she’s wildly attracted to Duke even though she’s not sure she buys this whole mate thing.

I love these two together. He’s a grump of a grump and absolutely hates modern technology. She’s about as socially awkward as they come and is a genius when it comes to technology. So the two of them couldn’t be more different. It’s a hoot reading about them. And I love the camaraderie amongst the the team with all their trash talking.

This is the first Mandy M Roth book I’ve read but I’ve already picked up several more I had such a good time reading this one.
