While living in sunny California, 'Brown Wolf', the dog-wolf is feeling the call of the wild nature of the desolate and frigid North. Neither the affection that surrounds him, nor the good living conditions can make him overcome his innermost desire to go back to his roots...
John Griffith Chaney, better known as Jack London, was an American novelist, journalist and activist. A pioneer of commercial fiction and American magazines, he was one of the first American authors to become an international celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction.
London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of animal rights, workers’ rights and socialism. London wrote several works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, War of the Classes, and Before Adam.
His most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in Alaska and the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote about the South Pacific in stories such as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen".
Predictable ending with a flimsy plot. But London's talent as a wordsmith is well at display here. Nothing is wasted: there is just enough description of the characters, setting and wolf to make you feel like you're there with these people, that you've me the dog, that you care about its destiny. Worth your (short) while.
I didn't know how to rate this. London is a great writer but I HATE dog stories. It's why I've put off reading Call of the Wild for so long. I am way too attached to dogs. Love them. And so I hate when stories make dogs sad. Either they're sad or hurt or die. In this one, I think the dog is sad. London does an amazing job of portraying the indecision the dog goes through in this story, and I could totally feel for the woman wanting to make a sound and gesture to the dog. I didn't much like the original owner and felt the dog belonged to the couple. There was really no way for this story to end that would have made me happy. But that shouldn't diminish his writing. London has a talent for writing prose through the eyes of an animal and anyone who enjoys this can easily see what a fantastic writer he is. Just not a story for me!
This is a great story of a dog named wolf in California who was previously owned by a man in Alaska. When the former owner sees the dog in its new home, the dog is put in the position to choose between a life of ease in the mild weather of California and a world of work in the wilds of Alaska.
I agree with some reviews posted here. Jack London's writing is what saved this from becoming a mundane, 1 star read with a predictable plot that bores its readers to death. The story of the dog was sweet. And though there wasn't much in terms of the plot, reading this was enjoyable.
