In the hills of West Virginia, the monsters are real...
The mountains hide magic older than memory, and weird and wild things lurk in the shadows, better left forgotten.
Veronica Carter, a bitter detective with the ability to talk to ghosts, seeks out cases that cross into the paranormal. While trying to solve a mysterious murder, she encounters Jennifer Simmons, a disgraced psychologist who has returned to her childhood home to find the monster who killed her father. The violent creature has plans of its own.
As their new friendship grows, both women must face the truth of who they are and what they've done. You can't outrun your past; sometimes, those things that go bump in the night come back to kill you.
I expected a series of short stories and ended up getting a paranormal mystery about a West Virginia cop with a curse and the ghost of her MawMaw out here kicking demon butt and taking names. 302 names to go. Also, I will vote this to be my favorite ending to a book, ever. I can't recommend this enough!
I legit think Stephen Bias may be one of the greatest bullshitters of our time and this book proves it. Meeting Stephen in real life, you immediately know this is a guy who can small talk with the best of them. He doesn’t know a stranger, he can bond with someone in five minutes tops, and he can relate to people. 304 Monsters shows those personal qualities of Bias flawlessly. The character work here can only be done by an author with a tremendous understanding of people. The characters here are written as fully fleshed out personalities, even without back story you know these people. That’s what makes this book special, the humor is there as back and forth banter between people who know each other deeper than a nod in the store. The writing feels like Bias is writing about all of the people he knows personally. The feel here is passionate because of that, Bias lays his heart out on the page as purely as some of the greats. Every page reads like a man who woke up and realized he had to write to survive. This isn’t just a damn good horror novel, this book would succeed with just five characters hanging out. Just don’t try and brush away the chapter markers like I did. K thx.
This book was amazing. As someone who has known Mr. Bias for years, I was convinced he was only capable of dirty jokes and general shenanigans. His first book really surprised me with the way he could make me feel emotions other than “happy comedy” type feels. With 304, he took me through a gamut of feelings. This book is a love letter to the weirdness of West Virginia. So many side characters lead me to wish there was a side story about them. I would love to see this become a series exploring the other 303 monsters. Wonderfully written horror. I fully recommend this to anyone who enjoys the campfire tales we enjoyed as kids in this weird state. I can’t wait to see if we come back to these mountains again. Super proud to have my signed copy on my shelf of local, signed books.
If you want to be awesome, read this book… if you wanna be a loser, don’t read this book.
But in all seriousness, this book is really worth your time. It’s a heartwarming story-line about the importance of community and found families, has the best old lady character I’ve ever read, and too many monsters to count….after all, it wouldn’t be a true WV story if it didn’t have a little weirdness, right?
A compelling story with great horror elements! The characters of Veronica and Jennifer were a breath of fresh air as protagonists. Wonderful reading characters that are fun to root for, but that are also flawed like real human beings.
Loved that the horror was rooted in reality with a touch of the supernatural. Hoping this is just the start of what could be a fantastic series!
It’s a little confusing until you get a few chapters in and everything merges together but once that happened? WOW! I’m dumbfounded by the story telling and I absolutely loved reading it, could hardly put it down!
