Once Upon A Time I walked into the (semi) wild world and came upon a rune stone. From the rune stone emerges, Freya, Viking Goddess of love and sex. Freya is also a modern day Goddess of fun and satire. She can fly, she can cook, she can make everyone laugh and everyone has great sex.
My profile on here states that I like to learn from my reading. With this little piece of ‘suitably lovely’ work, that did I! Nordic mythology and more importantly – the lovely, mellifluous Freya, who just happens to be a Goddess of all things good – and then some! Most excitingly, I also learned that it’s good to jump out of that silly comfort zone. I did just that to read a genre that I’ve not experienced before and this was a fun choice for me, as that’s just what I like – fun!
Mr Ullman has the knack of deadpan commentary (think of a “reasonably priced and ergonomic” bed at IKEA during a romantic moment with an alluring, perfect Goddess, or even what washing machine temperature to wash said Goddess’ robe), interspersed with absolute comedic moments. I was entertained by a narrator that was uber serious (think “Putting on sturdy boots, packing a small bag with water and fruit”), who was a total contradiction during the funny and silly that happened throughout. It was meant to be light hearted but our narrator mixed that up. I liked our unnamed narrator almost being the ‘voice of reason’, amongst a healthy splattering of sexy, and he too became alluring as he began to realise the enormity of the situation into which he was thrust upon. Yes, thrust!
The author uses short sentences, with extreme effect and surprising candour. Imagery was coloured and always vivid and pleasing, which was important to this story given its mythological and fantastical theme. I liked ‘pompous birds’, ‘liquid licorice’ and the lovely ‘thyme and apples’. His writing was straight to the point and matter of fact, but always with prose that I really liked and found endearing. The whole ride was a refreshing one for me; I did like this tale of, not only erotic love, but of real love by beautiful, strong, gentle and alluring women throughout the ages.
A lusty 5 stars here for something that could bring me out of my ‘normal’ and make me laugh, remind me of my womanly importance in this oft male dominated world, and for teaching me what a rune stone is - and the alternatives for its use! As for the last sentence in FBF, I am not backward in coming forward when I say I think this author must have a few more links in this chain, bring on the next chapter, please!
This is one of the most surprising books I have ever read. It is not a standard erotic novel, it is not a standard anything. It is a joyful and unabashedly cheeky romp through ancient mythology and modern life. Unabashedly witty, unashamedly funny, unquestionably passionate - definitely a must to read. I am a little bit in love with Freya and have decided to take her as my role-model ;)
FREYA BEING FREYA is a very unique and well written story with a fresh take on Viking goddess Freya and Norse mythology. I’m not the biggest fan of erotica, but this novel was well worth pushing my reading boundaries. The author managed to capture my attention from page 1 with his witty, sexy and fantastical storytelling.
This was unexpectedly delightful. Unique! Fun, but definitely not stupid!
But first, let me just say that Freya Being Freya is not an erotic novel or erotica (not sure if there's a difference)! Just because it has a few sex scenes (nothing over the top), it doesn't make it erotic fiction. Categorising it that way, I feel it devalues it, and that's a shame.
Because Freya being Freya is a wonderfully quirky, deliciously irreverent novel, with wonderful feminist undertones - well, actually the feminist message is right there on the page, no under anything about it:
"But I am here mainly for us women. I have witnessed many things in my long life.”.. “and have seen how women have grown strong in the last few decades, especially in these, my own lands. But we must not rest on our laurels as men, powerful men resent our power. They will always love our power of beauty and love and kindness and sex. … “But they will not allow us to be equal to themselves and certainly never more powerful. We must always be who we are without ever having shame or seeing ourselves as second class citizens. I am here today, not to make you hate men but to love yourselves more …to be proud of what you are, girls, women, mothers, temptresses, sirens, the people with more empathy, more gentleness and more love to give. With this love I ask you, maybe even command you to stand up to men’s lust for power. Those who lust for power are those who must not have power. I ask you always to point out what you think is wrong in the world. Your intuition will be wise. You need to speak out and then act upon this intuition. Powerful men speak too much."
So who says the above? It's Freya, a Viking goddess of love and sex, who's brought to life into this word by a mere mortal thirty-something Swedish guy. He's in deep with Freya, because no one and nothing can resist her. Her beauty and presence are astounding. But she's more than just beautiful. She's intelligent, kind, smart, shy, assertive, daring, demure, silly, friendly and altogether amazing. And no push-over! She won't let men dominate, tell her what to do, who to be! (When was the last time you've come across a similar female character?)
Anyway, I don't want to give too much away. I will just say that this was beyond surprising.
The writing is excellent! It's so good, I even enjoyed the first person narrative, which, if you've been reading my reviews, you'd know I'm not too keen on it.
So, yeah, this was an unexpectedly enjoyable read. Whoever Thomas Ullman is, he/she (I'm leaning towards she) is a great writer. While I'm not a big fan of cliffhangers, I'm going to read the next novel (I was intrigued and I googled the author and I came across the fact that there's a sequel).
Thanks so much to Suzanne for reading and reviewing this. Her warm recommendations convinced me to buy it.
This story was beautiful. It was written from the male's perspective, which I really loved. Freya was the most wonderful woman and I loved her portrayal and the way Thomas gave her such humanity while maintaining her goddess status. The sex scenes were purposeful and while they were explicit, they weren't gaudy. What I really loved was that the women in this story were powerful, valuable and were treated with utmost respect by the author which is unlike most stories available now.
It could have used a proofread, which I usually rate down for, but in this case, the author did such a good job that I overlooked it.
Seriously unique and unlike anything I've ever read before. The beginning was quite interesting and had a twist I didn't see coming. From page one my eyes were wide, and the excitement just kept coming. This was the first time I've read from a man's perspective on a erotica novel and I have to say it was something I enjoyed. More direct but still with all the delicious details, they were just styled differently. Freya was a fresh, original character that I really enjoyed reading about. She stole the scene in every chapter she was in, and appeared to do the same in whatever world she was drawn into. I liked that our MC was humble, and not some dreamy out of this world man. It made him very relatable and realistic.
Not to give too much away but the ending left the reader wanting to know so much more about what was in store for our MC's.
Overall I do have to say again how different, but refreshing this novel was. It will be unlike anything you ever read, and that is a good thing. Would recommend to any that are looking for something a little out of their conform zone if they don't normally read erotica, or for that erotica reader who needs a breathe of fresh air.
As an avid supporter of all things Gods and Goddesses *wink* I accepted a copy of FBF to review by Mr. Ullman. What a treat it was! I turned off the lights, cozied up with my red wine, and couldn't pull myself from this delightful tale. I didn't know what to expect, truly. I'm a YA Author, but stepping out of my comfort zone to divulge in a guilty pleasure is A-okay by me. The opening pages captured my attention and the rest of the novel surprised me in a great way. Loved the narrative and this phrase specifically, "Freya exists for me as a symbol of what women...what we all should be striving for...freedom of thought, deed and expression. Though I do draw the line at sleeping with dwarves for payment."
Five stars for Mr. Ullman and his erotic storytelling that leaves nothing to the imagination. A must-read for fans of romance and fantasy too!
It is clear this Author is an intelligent writer and knows all about Norse Mythology and the Goddess Freya. What we know about this Goddess is cleverly weaved into the present, leading to a fun, light hearted and sensual story. The narrator takes us on a journey of happiness and lust. I really enjoyed Freya being in the now and how everyone felt the effects of her beauty and charm. The story flows well and is a real pleasure to read. I think this is the cleanest story I've ever read that contains raunchy moments, no crudeness, it is delicately worded but leaves nothing to the imagination. I'm looking forward to reading more as the ending of Freya being Freya opens a whole new tale....I recommend.............. Now I'm off for a ride in my golden chariot......
If your looking for something different, want to break out of the norm, then this is the book for your. It was definitively different, and very outside of the norm for me anyway ... but overall its a love story. It took me by surprise, on a bit of a journey and opened my eyes to a different world. The world where The Goddess of love exists, or does she?
Freya being Freya review I didn’t know where this book was going when it first started – it is a profound and eye opening sequence of events that pushes the reader straight into the story – giving you a good idea what to expect. The erotic content leaves nothing to the imagination which for some may be too much, but for me personally I find nothing wrong with a bit of sexual content as long as it doesn’t go overboard into porn. Thomas’ descriptions of Freya are very clear, allowing me to visualise her immediately and I like the added mystical element of the Goddess, I found it difficult to conjure up an image of the author as the book is in first person and my imagination varied from one chapter to another. Some of the events in the book were astonishing and I found it hard to imagine taking a Goddess to any of them, which brought a comical, light-heartedness to the story. (Whether this was intentional or not I don’t know) but it kept me intrigued as to what would happen next. I won’t spoil it for anyone! There were area’s that for me went on too long and started to sound a little too monologue from the first person’s perspective which made me shift forward now and again as it contained too much detail I didn’t think helped the story along. This isn’t my type of genre, but I was glad to have perused the pages of this author and see ‘Freya’ from another angle. It’s good to step out of my comfort zone and find interesting reads that certainly made my eyebrows rise quite a few times!
I will be the first to admit that I was very unsure about reading this book. I didn't think I would like it. I like tangible concepts…things that seem obtainable…and an erotic tale involving a Norse deity was certainly not on my reading list for this decade. I was wrong…plain and simple.
Thomas Ullman has ripped me from the predictable little box that I was reading in and proved that writing talent supersedes my preconceived notions about mixing the fantastical mythological world with modern day.
Freya Being Freya is a beautifully vivid and surprising story of love, awakening and empowerment. Written from the male point of view, some may be shocked to find the underlying call of action to women everywhere to “love yourselves more…to be proud of what you are, girls, women, mothers, temptresses, sirens, the people with more empathy, more gentleness and more love to give.”
The tale is a charming romance with just the right touch of humor and erotic artistry to entice all your senses. Read this book!!! Tell your friends about this book! Then plan to follow the story in the next installment, Freya’s Daughters.
This book has been getting very good reviews, so I decided to give it a go. I had read the synopsis but I wasn´t really sure what I was about to read.
Let me tell you, I did not expect that! It was just fantastic! This is an adventurous, sometimes humorous, erotic story about this man who meets Freya the goddess of love and the writer takes you on this adventurous ride that includes for example goddesses and gods from Asgard. The writer puts together this story involving our time and mythology and does it so well. This story is witty and funny and so sensual and sexy! I don´t want to give much more away about the story, you just have to read it yourself, I don´t think you will regret it :)
This book is very well written. The descriptions of the characters and the environment is very good and very believable, you can almost feel like you are there with them! And don´t forget that this is an erotic book also, and I liked that part too, very much ;)
What makes this erotic novelette really stand out is that it has a strong theme of feminism throughout. Erotica could often be criticized for being anti-feminist; however, Thomas has completely turned the tables with Freya Being Freya. Throughout this book Thomas shows how strong, empowered women are sexy. Thomas even manages to present his point without sounding preachy, and actually uses a quirky voice. It initially took me off guard, but ended up winning me over by the end of the story because it matched this quirky book perfectly. I was initially curious as to why Thomas paired a goddess with a man who doesn't seem terribly successful or driven, but later realized this was perfectly in step with the message of this book. I would suggest this book for the feminist who wants to get her (or his! I love that the author of this feminist piece is a man) hands on some erotica.
A beautifully written story of love, lust and intrigue.
Viking goddess of love Freya is summoned when our narrator visits an ancient rune stone early one morning. What ensues is fantastical, sexy and at times hilarious romp through the joy and peril of hosting a goddess in our mundane, mortal world.
Obsequious fawning, appetition and the odd awkward moment abound as our first person narrator skilfully talks us through the world of demigod meets domesticity.
Thomas Ullman certainly knows how to capture and maintain our attention as he takes us on a journey we're not likely to forget in a hurry. Freya Being Freya is a 'must read' not just for fans of Erotica, but for fans of fantastical fiction in all its forms.
I really enjoyed reading Freya Being Freya, I found it very interesting, enjoyable and well written. When I finished reading, I was smiling. Not many books I have read left me with a smile. What made me laugh and smile, was the thought of a goddess drinking black coffee in the modern day world. I could actually picture the scene, which is very well written to me. In short I found it enjoyable, interesting and well written.
When I received Freya Being Freya yesterday I began reading it. To say the least I couldn't put it down. I stayed up till 1am reading it and I was half way threw it. One of the best books I've read in a long time. Had my attention from the first page. Absolutely loved it.
I am Suzy from PS Naughty Reviewers. RATING: 2.50 out of 5.00 Review: This book was refreshingly different. It is a modern mingling with ancient Norse Gods. I am Swedish after all. ;) It was a mix of descriptive explosion, which is a gift he possesses, and history all rolled together in one. The story brings in words like: “Bifrost”, “Rainbow bridge”, and “”Asgard from movies like Thor, so you as the reader can relate.
The characters are well defined and I never felt overwhelmed with the amount of them. I did feel tension, however never any other emotions—yet told that the characters were upset or crying. The reader was told that he (the character) liked people, a lot. Show me!
Being the writer’s first piece, I find this is a good attempt and with reworking—this series could be AMAZING in the mythology/fantasy community. I implore the author to find an editor to fix the telling portions to really make this great piece shine, because honestly they have a future in writing, IMHO.
PS the ending! Woah!
Thank you for the pleasure of reading a truly interesting book from a new and gifted writer. I do hope you check this one out. It really did take me on an unexpected ride.
First off I need to say that I received a free copy through Goodreads Firstreads.
Now on to my review. I like Freya as a the main character. I didn´t really like her mal counterpart. Maybe that made the story a bit sour for me. If I liked him more, I would have probably rated the book with more stars. Storywise itself, it took me quite a while to get in the mood for the total clash of cultures described. The crossover of modernism and mythology was a nice twist, I could´nt find in a lot of stories. But I enjoyed it, especially with me working at IKEA I laughed a lot at the scenes talking about a meatball eating goddess :D I expected a little bit more - I think Freya has potential for a bigger story. She´s a goddess, there´s always room for more. It was quite short and the scenes are quite short and dense. I would have liked it to be slower at some points, going more into detail...
But all in all I enjoyed it and liked it :) I hope that my very honest review is of use for some of you.
To be entirely honest, this isn't the kind of book that I would normally read but I'm glad I did. The writer's ability to descriptively paint the country-side and the outdoor locations is phenomenal. The words sort of get into your head and arrange themselves into the referenced landscape. The Swedish scenery coupled with the Norse mythology is a combination which goes hand in hand and is easy to relate to. The book is well versed and divided into exact proportions of the many twists that occur in the story. The most important thing that this book promotes is the empowerment and self-belief of women. It emphasizes upon the fact that women are independent and quite free in making and following their own decisions. All in all, it is a good read.
So the book arrived yesterday (or the day before yesterday, I don't remember) and this afternoon I finished it.
I loved it the ironic note in the voice of the narrator (who has no name and this thing upset me at the beginning because I had never read a book whose main character has no name, but I took it as an innovation and I liked it) and want to talk about Freya?! Freya, the goddess with golden and almost solid tears.. I mean, what an awesome image for a goddess! Divine!!
I also liked the opposition between her taste of something so sweet like apples and thymes and her sensuality!
And last but not least I really really liked "seeing" with every sense, very tenderhearted.
I think this book was well written, very nice... awe, who am I kidding, this book is AMAZING! Thomas was able to capture the essence of Freya in this book, and I would be lucky to be able to write as well as he has. I loved the book, and I often find myself reading it over and over again, not because of the smut (which was a nice plus if I may say so) but because of how well it really is written.
