The Welter War

Rate this book
The boxer: The king at 147 pounds, Michael Bennett, is brash and cocky but has the ability to back up his mouth in the ring. But why won't he defend his words in the sport he constantly runs down? Surely he isn't afraid of men who can come in off the street and fight in uncivilized settings like a cage.

The mixed martial artist: Elijah Moore, the greatest welterweight in the history of the fastest rising sport, comes from a more humble background. His life outside of the cage is driven by the memory of his beloved. He has a secret that needs to come off of his chest and unwaveringly stares hate and intolerance in the eye to bare himself to the world. It's not common knowledge that there's no love lost between Elijah and Michael, but their accolades and their personal battles set the stage for an inevitable war that will answer the question: which is the superior combat sport?

Y'know, I was going to give this a 4. Drago has crafted a fine piece of work, with plenty of positive LBGQT vibes that don't overshadow the action.

And hoooo boy, what action! Hell, even the sex (which was excellently written!) does nothing but shine a light on some of the best, most technical action writing I've had the honor of readin'!

Now, I really REALLY don't want to give away anything (#StopSnitching I mean...#StopSpoiling), but I gotta come clear with one thing.

Drago has done a STELLAR job of not only fleshing out the two main characters of this book, but all the way from the beginning to the fateful end, all of it making sense. Watching the animosity build up to a satisfying fight...yeah.

Freakin' AWESOME!

Despite myself, I had originally wanted to give this a 4. To be straight with all y'all, I'm giving this a 4.5 instead, because the more I re-read that last battle, the more Drago's handling of technical combat stands out.

And then there's the whole "alternative lifestyles" and the complex relationships and characters involved. Seriously, watching the interplay between Vida and Elijah was freakin' awesome, and delving into Michael's past (somewhat) was just as interesting. Just...I can-NOT give just a 4.

So he gets a 4.5.

Which kinda-sorta in my logic translates to a 5, but pay heed - it's a 4.5.

Don't be fooled by the system. :3

"The Welter War" by Drago Drache Dragao was a real eye opener for me. Set in the world of boxing and mixed martial arts fighting it taught me a lot about the rivalry between the sports, the ethics and the cult around those sports.
But the story is mostly character driven by two fascinating, deep sportsmen: Michael and Elijah are both champions in their respective sports and the media would love for them to fight each other.
Their careers, relationships and family are a big part of the story.
Expertly written with sound knowledge of the sporting world and touching on sensitive issues, such as tolerance in sport for bi-sexuality and transgender, the book is quite a treat on more than one level.
I loved that the LGBTQ issue was only a minor part of the story, establishing a healthy trend where a book can contain these issues without having to be solely about them.
Having it in such a setting was new and refreshing for me. An important book for all sports fans. Recommended.

Sometimes in life we tend to say things that we believe to be true, but when the facts come up and smack us in the face with brutal honesty we are forced to reconsider our stance on the situation. It doesn't matter how much we want something to be true if it is not then we cannot force it to be so. This is a lesson that all must learn and if they are to grow from the experience then they must humble themselves and admit that they were wrong.

The Welter War by D. Drache Dragao is a story that displays this message through the growth and humbling of one of the main characters, Michael Bennett. He starts out as the reigning IFB Welterweight title belt holder who believes that boxing is a much tougher and more "real" sport than MMA. He is married to a lovely woman and has a young son who is his namesake. As the story progresses Michael learns many valuable lessons. He and his wife have a conflict which ends up causing them to separate during which time he finally accepts the challenge to step into the cage and fight the world renowned Elijah Moore.

Elijah Moore has been facing tough times of his own. His best friend and partner of three years was killed in an alcohol related automobile crash. He is holding a secret from everyone that could ultimately change the way others view him, and may create a large backlash when Elijah finally reveals the truth about him being bisexual. He is also trying to continue with a project his late partner started at the local LGBT center teaching self defense classes to school-aged children. With all of these items on his plate he is also having some family concerns of his own.

As you can tell by now, this story is very complex and elaborate in the range of issues that it covers. If you are prepared to read, listen and learn about the plights of two very honorable men and those around them, then I suggest you pick up your copy of The Welter War and begin reading. The values instilled through the writer's words will ring true to you and have you looking at life in a whole new light.

Man what a great read this Author starts out fast and just keeps going. This was such a great book I asked my husband one question about it and I had to read it to him. Rather you like boxing or not I think you can enjoy this book. It has so much more to it and the plot was very well thought out. It touches lightly on BDMS and sex. Not too heavy and not over detailed. Just enough for you to know love comes in many forms and fashions. The charters are well trained in their art and the Author pours blood and sweat into the detail not missing a thing.
I am waiting to see book two as his attention to detail is amazing and I want to see where the rest of the story goes. So hurry up we are all waiting. If you are a man or a woman this book offers a lot grab it up

I was slightly bored with this book even in the beginning, and I kind of just kept waiting for something to happen. Did anyone else think this was going to be about Michael and Elijah getting together? Ya, that was me. I realized how very wrong I was by the time I was a bit more than halfway through the book. The writing though, was good. It was really the only reason I kept reading. If I had known what it was about I would have only maybeeee read it. Not sure. Basically though, the author writes well, but the story itself was just meh.

I don't know who could gave that story a 5 star rating but from my point of view it shouldn't get event 1 star.

Story plot is boring, boring, boring.

I am disappointed on the whole line.
