The Perfect Pie: A Handbook for Pie Lovers by Dennis Weaver is an excellent 'how to' for pie making. In spite of a few typos, I gave it five stars.
It took me back to my high school cooking classes & the pie making basics I learned so many years ago. Those lessons have served me well. I'll admit that I don't make pies as often as I used to, but this book has encouraged me to do so again.
There are practical tips for crust making & delicious recipes included. I highly recommend it.
This is an extremely basic book and may work for a very new baker. There are a few issues though: The author does not refer at all to using Lard in pastry crusts; it would be helpful to have advice on whether lard is acceptable, how it affects the result, whether it is useful in any type of pie. There are no savoury pie recipes. The author refers to equipment that is not necessarily common and does not explain what they do or where to get one; for example what is an “Apple Master”? Some of the recipes are confusing; one example is the Boston Cream Pie where the author has you make a box cake mix then gives a recipe for a cake. The instructions are very confusing. For a book about pie making the author uses a lot of ‘box’ mixes. If you can get it on sale, go for it but do not pay full price - there are better books available.
This is a perfect book for me because I would rather bake a pie than cakes or cookies. The Perfect Pie ~ A Handbook for Pie Lovers gave basic techniques and ratio of ingredients to making a perfect crust, which turns out to be just what I needed to improve my crusts. The wide variety or pies has also expanded the types I have been making and my family has loved all the new ones we have shared from The Perfect Pie Book.
I enjoyed the variety of recipes. I thought I knew a lot about crust and fillings but I still learned a lot more. This book is and will be helpful on my next big family get together. I would recommend this book to all the people that enjoy making pies and trying new pie recipes
This cookbook by Dennis Weaver has many recipes for pies as well as tips for making the perfect pie. My grandson likes the Mississippi Mud Pie for his birthday.
