“Coast to Coast with A Cat and A Ghost” by Judy Howard follows author’s cross-country journey and her struggle with loss
SUN CITY, Calif. – “Coast to Coast with A Cat and A Ghost” (ISBN 1461153786), an autobiographical account by Judy Howard, follows the author’s road trip across country after the death of her loving yet at times abusive husband.
When her husband of twenty-five years, Jack, passes away, Howard is faced with an overwhelming sense of loss. She takes to the road in her Winnebago on a journey of self-discovery aaccompanied by her cat, Sportster, and Jack Incarnate, a life-size stuffed doll she creates with an eerie resemblance to her late husband. During their travels she and Sportster experience the beauty of the land as she resolves her troubled memories through conversations with the doll. She comes to terms with her deep love for her husband despite the abuse that was part of their relationship and discovers how she became a stronger woman for it.
“The book is a narrative, both of physical travel and of emotional and spiritual evolvement,” says Howard. “It leads the reader through the hills and valleys and provides insights to fear and bravery.”
Howard aims to weave an emotionally-charged narrative with humorous anecdotes and a unique perspective on life, engaging and inspiring the reader. She looks to take the readers on a ride into her new stage of life, through the joys of travel, over unexpected bumps in the road with glimpses of the world through her eyes and even the eyes of her cat to a final destination that is hope.

Really loved this story! As my husband and I are also full-time RVers, Judy Howard's book was especially good on two perspectives: that of a widow launching out on her own to show herself she could do it, and from the viewpoint of a fellow full-time RVer (with my husband).
I love the way she writes about her cat and inserts the part about what the "ghost" says. I particularly related to the route she took to Florida as it's the same one we followed to Georgia and nodded at many of her observations about the landmarks she passes along the way.
I'm already looking forward to her next book! Brava, Judy Howard! Great job!
This is a wonderful travelogue and a memoir of grief. Ms. Howard's descriptions of the sites on her journey are mesmerizing. Her memories--good and bad--of her marriage to Jack add richness to her travels. I too am a widow and RVer and have imagined my husbands comments if her was riding with me. The strength and confidence that she gains on her trip are the highlight of the book.
I believe this book would be particularly interesting to a recent widow. Judy's honest and forthright candor about the marriage and sorting out these feelings after his death. I felt like I was in the RV with her and seeing all that she saw. Her descriptions of the areas she visited were painted with words I could see. I know what courage it takes to drive long distances alone as I too have done that many times.
Somewhere along the pages this book switched from a straightforward memoir into a suspenseful who-done-it romance novel. Many novelists try something new, and fall short. It was refreshing to read something that breaks the mold, and is as honest as it is unpretentious. I thought about this story a lot since finishing it.
I really enjoyed this memoir. Being near her age and wondering if something happened to my spouse, what would I do? It's great to know that you just have to pick up and take control of your life in whatever way is good for you. Even if you have the jitters. Loved the cat and the other traveling companion. What a great idea Jack Incarnate was. Looking forward to getting the fictional sequel.
