Hoo-boy! We're back with the heroes of GV and Buck and Loretta are GREAT! Not just because they fit nicely together, but also because they uncover a lot of truths (many of them unexpected) when Loretta agrees to take the job Buck offers.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's talk about Loretta and Buck first. She's the job-juggling lady who makes lives better for pretty much everyone she meets. Well, except the cheaters. Their lives don't get better, but that's on them, isn't it? Loretta helps women in tough situations with her PI gig, helps everyone in GV with her job at the Sheriff's department, and makes fabulous beauty products because she's an overachiever like that. Given her past relationship issues, she's also tends to be a little wary in the heart department.
Buck is...well, he's kind of an old soul. He's young, but he wants the things his older coworkers and friends want. Which is to say a romantic partner who matches his in all ways and a family. Convincing Loretta that age is just a number takes a bit and it's complicated by some familial issues. Those issues are what prods Buck into asking for Loretta's help in the first place. And when that familial stuff takes a turn no one expected, Buck makes the mistake of going it alone in an attempt to keep Loretta safe. Which isn't his best idea ever, but I absolutely understand where he was coming from.
Twisted family dynamics, a support group of strong women, investigations, road trips on said investigations, a couple of Cletus sightings, a man who uncovers secrets that rock his world, and a lady who isn't good at leaving things alone. I mean that in a good way. Loretta pushes when she needs to and is a rock for anyone who needs one. *thumbs up*

I absolutely loved this book. It was interesting and intense, and held my attention quickly and easily. The storyline definitely kept me on my toes! Buck was a unicorn of a man, though flawed like all people, and I (for the most part) really liked Loretta too. Loretta’s jaded-ness was very frustrating at times, though. :) I HIGHLY recommend this story, and it is a complete stand alone. Although Forrest For The Trees comes first, it does not need to be read at all.
Right from the start, the way our main characters met had me hooked—it was fun, quirky, and set the tone for the rest of the story. Plus, the mystery subplot added an extra layer of intrigue that kept me interested.
However, as much as I enjoyed the ride, I couldn't shake the feeling of disconnect with the characters. The insta-lust/love dynamic wasn't for me, I like my romance to be more slow burn. And I think third act conflict was unnecessary.
Despite this, I still think Young Buck has its merits and would recommend it to others. Who knows, you might end up loving it more than I did.
Thank you to Valentine PR and the author for this arc!
I really have enjoyed this series, and especially the first on in the series that was also by this author, Forrest for the Trees. And this one started out really good too!
There was a lot going on this story. You had Loretta who was a PI and also worked at the police station. She also led a support group for women who had been cheated on. And because she’d always wanted a child with her ex who had died, she has decided to go the artificial insemination route.
Then you had Buck who was a firefighter, but was young for how advanced he was. His father was also a former politician, with his brother now working to get elected. He had just moved to Green Valley, since he’d always wanted to work in a town like this. He moves in next door to Loretta, but she didn’t know he was subletting her neighbors’ house, and so she got him with the taser when he moved in late at night. Unfortunately the video of it got shared with his fire crew before he got there, and so he started off on a bit of a disadvantage.
The two of course are attracted to each other almost right away. But both have things going on in their lives that keep them from jumping right into that. Soon Buck needs her skills as a PI for his own family mystery, and so that makes her want to keep their distance for that reason too. As I said, there is a lot going on in this story!
I enjoyed all the Green Valley aspects and people in the story, even time with my favorite Winston brother, Cletus. A few parts got a little long for me, and it was the opposite of the last book by this author, I was a little irritated with some of Loretta’s being angry at him, even if it did make sense with her background in this book. And I had to disagree when one character said women in their 50s who like younger men are called saber-tooths, they are actually called jaguars, I think maybe women in their 60s are saber-tooths? lol
"That wasn't a kiss. That was me creating a diversion. You'll know when I kiss you, Loretta."
Loretta Boggs, 35, PI and crime scene processor, burnt in love, done with trying to find love, but wants a baby. Buck Rogers, 26, genius, baby-faced firefighter, always working hard to be taken seriously, looking to settle down. The initial attraction is mutual, although they don't get off to a good start. However, that doesn't deter Buck.
"This was more than amazing sex. It was the feeling that he was really with me, that something sacred inside each of us was coming together. And I knew that I would never be the same."
Ooph! The chemistry between these two was electric! Buck melted my heart! He was mature, sincere, and so smitten with Loretta. His romantic gestures made me swoon. When his life becomes somewhat tumultuous, I sympathised with his need to keep Loretta safe, albeit in the dark. She was carrying a vulnerable heart that had been so hurt, but I loved that she gave Buck a chance. However, this wasn't just a love story, it was also a story about sisterhood and friendship. I loved what Loretta had going on in the town. This story was amusing, sexy and very heartwarming.
Folks, I can FINALLY (finally, finally) confirm that I've written another book in the Green Valley Heroes series! I present to you Young Buck! Yes, *that* Buck...the one who helped Forrest investigate the suspicious fires in Forrest for the Trees. The one who had a tiny crush on Sierra (until Forrest shut it down).

This was a slow burn romance that held my attention from the moment I picked it up! And reverse age gap? Sign me up 🥰
Buck is a 26 year old firefighter who just moved in next door to Loretta, a 35 year old PI. Loretta has been burned by her ex so she is done trying to find love. Buck eventually needs Loretta’s professional skills to uncover a family mystery. With them getting closer, the undeniable chemistry starts to ignite.
Buck was such a good book boyfriend, and exactly what Loretta needed. I love that in the end she got the love she deserved after being so hurt in the past.
I think this was my favorite Kilby Blades book so far! The hero is nothing short of delicious (and thanks, Kilby, for acknowledging that he is an unusual specimen of a 26 year old!), the heroine is incredibly likable and competent, I absolutely loved the investigation they did together, the side characters and especially the COO community. This is a heartwarming, utterly engaging and often very funny book. The final twist when the hero has to rush to stop the heroine from making a mistake had me howling. Recommended with no reservations!
Let's dive into “Young Buck”! First off, let me tell you, I'm all about those reverse age gap stories, and this one tackles some seriously juicy topics that often get whispered about but rarely brought out into the open. Picture this: a woman in her prime who's ready for kids but doesn't have time to wait around for Mr. Perfect. Enter Loretta, a PI with a side gig at the police station, whose sass and humor add some real spice to the mix. She's been burned before, but she's not letting that stop her from being the rock for her fellow ladies in town, the “Cheaters On-Onymous” crew.
Then there's Buck, a young firefighter with an old soul. Despite being just 26, he's got the maturity of someone twice his age, thanks in part to his family's political drama. When he moves in next door to Loretta, sparks fly—literally, when she mistakes him for an intruder and zaps him with a taser! But hey, that's just the start of their wild ride.
Sure, there's plenty of playful banter and steamy chemistry between these two, but don't let that fool you—there's some serious stuff going on too. Buck's got family secrets to unravel, and Loretta's on a mission to become a mom, even if it means going the artificial insemination route (or is it assisted reproductive technology?). And let's not forget the whole “age gap” thing they've got to navigate while working side by side.
Now, while this might sound like your classic small-town romance with a twist, I'll be honest—I found myself feeling a bit distant from the story. Don't get me wrong, there were parts I absolutely adored, especially the push and pull between Loretta and Buck as they danced around their feelings. The book delves into topics such as betrayal, family secrets, and the societal pressure on women, which were all great themes. But at times, it felt like there was just too much going on, and some of the juiciest bits got lost in the shuffle. And even though I think the third-act conflict had valid reasons, the way it was executed…let's just say it left me wanting more. Because I could see the potential for so much more...
But hey, despite my gripes, “Young Buck” still packs a punch, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to fellow romance fans. Who knows, maybe you'll fall head over heels for it in a way I didn't. Give it a shot and see for yourself!
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving the ARC didn't affect my opinion of the book.
I'm absolutely smitten! Right off the bat, you'll find yourself rooting for Loretta, a go-getter through and through, and falling head over heels for Buck, who's just the sweetest. What's refreshing is how they embrace their age difference without any awkwardness. Both have their fair share of heartbreak – Loretta with her cheating husband and Buck as the forgotten child – but together, they find solace and strength. Buck's old-school masculinity is a breath of fresh air; he's not intimidated by Loretta's power but instead supports her in every way possible. Their dynamic is beautifully genuine, filled with mutual respect and understanding. And let's not forget their fantastic friend group, whose camaraderie adds another layer of richness to the story.
* I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this one with a younger man and older woman. So cute and so much fun. A mysterious family secret and investigation as well as cameos with Cletus Winston all over the place. Loved it!
I went in blind just knowing the tropes and I have to say I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. Not only is it the most adorable reverse age gap with a BIPOC FMC, but it had a slight suspense/mystery surrounding it and I was here for it. It was more than I was expecting and I really enjoyed it.
I haven't read Kilby Blades before, but the writing style was so effortless and easy with humor injected into it that I found myself snorting at spots.
I also have to add that I'm not a crier when it comes to books, but Loretta's "graduation" had me sobbing. It was such a tender, heartfelt moment that I lost it. The friendships these women forged out of situations that they found themselves in was just beautiful.
Thank you, Valentine PR and Kilby for the ARC. This is my honest opinion.
Firefighters ✅ I love small town, slow burn romance of this book. Loretta and Buck were perfect! There’s the fact that they’re neighbors and the age gap that just makes this book one you don’t want to put down. I’m going to have to check out the previous books in this series for sure!
Oh, I really liked this book. I’m sure partly because there were a few parts that really resonated with me since I could’ve been a member of COO! But I also like anything that Kilby writes! Buck and Loretta just seem like real folks that I could easily relate to. This is another wonderful addition to SPR!
I received an ARC from SmartyPants Romance.3.1.24. It was such a sweet and inspiring love story. I enjoyed both of these characters and visiting this world again. This author never disappoints.
Tropes: close proximity/neighbors; age gap; small town; he falls first; grump/sunshine; golden retriever MMC; girl squad
Kilby Blades's contributions are among the best things that have happened to Smartypants Romance. Don't get me wrong; I have a lot of authors whom I love writing in this world, but Kilby Blades has a way of bringing more to her romances, and it brings added layers to this world. In Young Buck, Blades introduces us to neighbors, Buck Rogers (a nice throwback to one of my favorite 80s shows) and Loretta. These two have a wild meet-cute that makes you laugh and feel bad for Buck. As the story progresses, Blades gifts us with Loretta's capacity as an independent, intelligent woman who transcends a traumatic background to succeed in her present day. She wraps Loretta's story in the genuine adoration of Buck, who falls first. The PR machine behind this book considers Buck the sunshine of the tale and Loretta the grump, but I think the reality is a golden retriever/black cat trope. Loretta, as a PI of cheating spouses, has seen the worst of relationships while also living through it. It isn't that she's grumpy; she's careful and decisive about relationships. With his privilege, Buck has been less thoughtful about it, but a situation in his life allows him an understanding of Loretta's past. Buck must also navigate a new job in leadership at the Green Valley Fire Department, which brings tension. Blades challenges him throughout this story, and it adds gravity to his "golden retriever" vibe.
Throughout all of this is an underlying story about Buck's family that surprises him and the reader. This plotline drives the story forward and keeps the readers engaged. As Buck and Loretta grow closer, their romance becomes the sweet essence of the book. It's also here where my one criticism of the story lies. Blades makes a choice about Buck that threatens his relationship with Loretta, and I understand its need to create tension in their relationship. However, given how Blades develops Buck's character, it is "out of character" for him and seems inconsistent.
With Young Buck, Kilby Blades shows us why we should read her more. She crafts entertaining characters and draws us into her romantic stories. The ending of Young Buck is precisely what is needed to put a smile on your face for the day, the weekend, or your week. Smartypants Romance is better for having her on their author list.
She is a private investigator motivated by her painful past to help women. He is the young new Lieutenant at the fire department. She just tased him in her neighbor's home.
Loretta is a strong black woman who found out her husband was cheating on her in the worst possible way. Since then, she has worked hard to put her life back together. One way she has helped is setting up a "book club" as a safe space for women trying to escape problematic marriages. Another way is Loretta acts as a private investigator for women who need proof. She also works part time at the Sheriff's office. So when she spots a burglar in her vacationing neighbor's home she doesn't hesitate to take action and tases the intruder.
Buck Rogers is excited to move to Green Valley Tennessee to settle down in a nice small town as the new lieutenant of the fire department. Until he can buy his own home he decides to rent out from a local family currently out of town. What he didn't expect is an absolutely beautiful woman taking him by surprise thinking he is breaking in.
Buck and Loretta move past the awkward first couple meetings. The attraction between them causes Buck to want to get to know Loretta more. So when problems arise in his family, he asks Loretta for her professional help. As the investigation unfolds Buck decides he wants a relationship. Loretta is hesitant when it comes to dating. Her desire to be a mom is increasing. So any man she introduces into her life needs to be able to fit her specific situation. With a nine year age gap between her and Buck she tells him anything between them will only be temporary. Buck is willing to play the long game to win Loretta but when his family needs him he is torn between what is the best thing moving forward.
Dual POV, neighbors to lovers, one open door love scene.
Another cute romance in the Pennyverse. Loretta is a strong FMC who is lovely. She has grown so much from her heartbreak. Buck is a mature twenty six year old looking to settle down. I enjoyed the sweet dynamic between the two of them. Sweet HEA and heartwarming Epilogue.
Bonus: Bethany Winston is mentioned as a critical influence for the storyline. Cletus and Jackson James make appearances.
I was provided an ARC of this book via the author and Smartypants Romance, all opinions are my own.
This is a cute age gap romance following tenacious Loretta, a part time crime scene investigator by day with the local sheriff's department and a personal investigator by night. Her PI business specializes in scorned women and she keeps their identities and personal well being safe. Loretta knows what it is like to be hurt by an unfaithful husband, so protecting these women and their dignity is very important to her. Enter Green Valley Fire Department's newest Lieutenant, Buck Rodgers and Loretta's new neighbor. Their first meeting is a comedy of errors, but Buck and Loretta have instant chemistry. Loretta isn't interested in a relationship, let alone with a hot fireman 10 years younger than her. Buck is determined to wear her down with his flirting and firehouse cooking skills.
Just as Buck and Loretta begin to grow closer, he finds he needs her PI skills to investigate something strange going on with his own mother. As the two of them look into what she is up to, Buck uncovers a messy family situation that he isn't sure how to handle. As he's processing his own dark family secrets he manages to spoil things with Loretta in the process. She isn't willing to let what appears to be Buck's immaturity ruin her life plans that she has worked so hard to obtain. Will Buck be able to protect Loretta from his family drama and win her back before it is too late?
I enjoyed Buck and Loretta as well as the supporting cast of characters. They both had good character development, and I thought they had good chemistry. This is a bit on the slower burn side as all of the threads of the story come together, but every thing does come together nicely in the end. This tackled some really great topics as well. As with all of the Smartypants Universe books this reads as a complete standalone.
This is another example of Kilby Blades' excellent authorship! Some things I liked about the heroine, Loretta: 1. Her age, 35 years old. She's experienced in her specialty, tracking cheating a$$holes for mistreated ladies. But her biological clock is ticking and she's made plans to be fulfilled without the personal involvement of a male. 2. After her husband's death, she changed herself from not only part-time investigator working with the local Sheriff's department, she's set up her own private-eye business behind her online presence as a vendor of self-produced herbal salves, soaps, candles, etc. Her former PI clients are the basis for her secret self-help group, Cheated-On-Onymous! She went from cooking for a husband to baking for her favorite groups. 3. She continues her green thumb activities: her own vegetable and herb garden and her neighbor's lawn as they do a year-long tour. This and her stakeouts give her alone and meditation time.
Things I liked about hero Buck: 1. He is a genius. He knew from early childhood he wanted to be a fireman, collecting toy firetrucks. He graduated high school at 15 and by 18 had finished college and was enrolled in the fire academy. Not surprisingly at 24 he was already promoted to lieutenant and hired at his choice of firehouses. 2. He had relationship problems, not only with his peers, so much older than he, but also with his political, controlling, Tennessee governor father. But he loved his mother and would do anything for her, including hiring PI Loretta when he discovers all is not well between his parents. 3. He was willing to risk his entire career in an emergency move to save Loretta from making a big mistake because he misunderstood her timeline.
I highly recommend this book. It has plenty of other characters as unusual as these two!
I ate this book up! I’ve never read any of this series before, as it can be read as a stand alone, but it did not disappoint. (Book #5 in the Green Valley Heroes series, Green Valley Chronicles, Penny Reid Book Universe.)

I knew he was smitten from the moment he laid eyes on her and said (There was no denying, I found her to be haltingly beautiful. It was something visceral, something I couldn't control.) This is man is perfect for Loretta. He is very mature for a 26 year old, which makes it that much easier to fall in love with him. He’s PROTECTIVE ("If you don't get the fuck away from her, you're gonna find out how off duty I can get.") And he doesn’t see her age, he sees her as the beautiful, strong woman that she is. This is a beautiful story with aspects of sisterhood, fertility, hot firefighters, found family, and so much more! 💗

Young Buck is part of the Green Valley Heroes series, but can be read as a stand alone. This was my first read by Kilby Blades and I really enjoyed this sweet, reverse age gap story.
Buck is a firefighter in Green Valley and the son of the former governor. Loretta is the leader of a secret support group “cheated On-onymous” an and a private investigator. They don’t exactly have a “meet cute” as she tases him in her neighbors driveway in a case of misunderstanding. This earns Buck the nickname “sparky” in the firehouse, but Loretta gets a spark of her own when she sees this beautiful man, however the age gap and her set on having a child on her own in the next year keeps her at a distance.
Buck hires Loretta to help him uncover some secrets in his family. Even though she wants to keep it professional she can’t help but sneak peeks at him. Buck wants to show Loretta that he is different than other men and that even though he is younger, he is ready for Loretta in his life. She really can’t resist him, but when he shuts her out she doesn’t understand why. Can they find their way out of this mystery and before she moves ahead with having that child on her own?
This was a really sweet romance and I enjoyed reading this book. I will be reading more from this author in the future. This is a book for you if you enjoy Reverse age gap, men in uniform, a little suspense, and funny friends.
This was a great read from start to finish. I loved Loretta and Bucky’s journey to their HEA ~ with all the ups and downs ~ and couldn’t wait to see how everything worked out for them in the end.
I adored Loretta and Bucky. They are just really good humans who are genuine in their care of others and need to protect and support those they care about. The journey to their HEA was a fun one. I loved how Bucky showed Loretta he was all about her and how she saw him for the man he was, not just his age. I enjoyed how they got to know each other and found that they had a similar POV on many things, and even when they didn’t, they found a way to accept it. They have a bit of a bumpy patch, which I understood to an extent, but I loved how they found their way back to each other and got the HEA they both deserved.
I really enjoyed this read. The pacing was good, the dual first person POV’s were well done and I really liked the flow of the story. As for Buck’s need for a PI, it was well written and I really liked how it all played out. As always I love being able to spend some time in Green Valley and getting to see some old favorites and meeting new ones. I loved Clarine ~ and am hoping she gets her own HEA ~ and the OCC group as a whole. The firehouse crew was a lot of fun, Dan was my fav along with Grizz. So, if like age gap, small town romances this is a one click for you.

i won't say that it didn't take me a minute to get into this book. I kinda had to re-read the begining again for me to really get into it. When I did that, it was really hard to put it down. I loved Loretta and what she was doing for the women in her town and nearby. She is a down right amazing!!! She has a heart of gold and puts herself in the right spots. I loved how seriously she takes her PI jobs and the people she's protecting. She's been hurt and isn't looking of love at all. After an interesting meet cute with Buck, she notices him but tries to shove it off. He isn't in her plan. Buck is younger than her but determined to get her so see he's not like other 26 year olds. He's also a firefighter. He's worked his tale off to get to the position he's in. He has his world rocked in this book. With being the Governor's son, he's had a different life then most but it hasn't stopped him from being a good human being. He's the son that didn't want to follow in his father's footsteps and in turn, turned out to be a better man. He's fiercely protective of his mother and will do anything to make her happy. When he finds out the family secret, he steps up and protects the ones he loves. It also means Loretta in this as well. I love both characters, the group of women or book club as they call it and all the firefighters in this. It was a very well written stories with characters you will love and rally around.
Young Buck is a super fun romance set in the quirky town of Green Valley that celebrates second chances and the unexpected turns love can take. Author Kilby Blades skillfully blends humor, romance, and a touch of mystery creating a story that is as heartwarming as it is entertaining.
Young Buck introduces readers to FMC Loretta Boggs, a sharp-witted infidelity investigator and leader of a support group for betrayed women. After her husband's scandalous death, Loretta has vowed to stay away from men, focusing her energy on her work and helping others navigate their heartache. Her orderly life is disrupted when MMC Buck Rogers, a charming (and much younger) fire lieutenant, moves in next door. As Buck seeks Loretta's investigative expertise to find the truth about a family secret, their interactions become a test of will power as they battle their attraction to one another.
I loved that Loretta was strong and independent, yet vulnerable in her struggle to let go of her past and embrace new possibilities. Buck's youthful, sincere charm added a dynamic contrast to Loretta’s serious nature, making their chemistry irresistible.
Anything set in Green Valley is an auto-buy for me and I loved seeing some familiar faces pop up to aid in the investigation.
Overall, I recommend Young Buck to any fan of this wonderful Smartypants Romance universe!
Thank you to Valentine PR and Kilby Blades for an early review copy. These are my honest thoughts.
Blurb: When her husband died in bed with a 19-year-old college student, Loretta Boggs swore off men. Now she moonlights as Green Valley's finest infidelity investigator. When she's not staking out scumbags, sidelining sugar babies, and catching cheating bastards, she's the fearless leader of Cheated On-onymous, a secret support group for betrayed women that meets in the basement of Green Valley Library.
Fire Lieutenant Buck Rogers is Green Valley Fire Department's newest recruit. He's also renting the house next door to Loretta’s. When a mysterious family secret compels him to seek the talents of a private investigator, he calls in a friendly favor.
But keeping things neighborly isn't easy. Not with Loretta spying on Buck's chin-up routine through his open bedroom window. Not with Buck's shameless flirting and beguiling blue eyes. Buck may be testing her resolve, but Loretta is testing his mettle. Can she get over the fact that he's just so young?
I loved the characters. This was a real and relatable couple with complicated stories that you couldn't help but be pulled into. Buck put the work in on the relationship and showed how age doesn't necessarily determine maturity. He never disrespected Lorettas feelings and always made her validated after her past experiences. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for more!
I’m a Kilby Blades fan and will always shout from the rooftops for everyone to pick up her books - especially those that are in the Smartypants Romance world! This is another excellent read, with a firefighter and a law enforcement officer (starting as a PI and turning into an actual police investigator). Great diversity and a great read.
Loretta is a PI - keeping her eye on Green Valleys cheaters, scum bags and other terrible players. She was the victim of a terrible mother and then a terrible, cheating husband who went and died before she could divorce and take him for everything… she stayed in Green Valley afterwards, a place where she finally felt like she was home and had a great (3) job and community and support groups.
Buck Rogers is new to the Green Valley FD and just moved in next door to Loretta, in the middle of the night - firefighter hours made for an uncomfortable taser situation that went viral with his new crew and earned him an unlucky new nickname, Sparky.
As the pair works to repair their terrible meet-cute and work together on an investigation, the story takes some excellent, if very emotional, twists and turns that makes this another enjoyable Kilby Blades story. You won’t want to miss this Green Valley Heroes addition!
I received an advance copy from Smartypants Romance and this is my honest feedback.
“She’d tasted like sugar, and spice, and everything nice, and watching her work had been a turn-on. Ingenious women were my kink.”
Aw, my heart is so full after reading Young Buck by Kilby Blades! The feuding neighbors to lovers premise made me giddy. Loretta Boggs is one of the most formidable and fascinating FMCs in a world of fierce, boss bish heroines. I love that Kilby made not just one, but both of the MCs hometown heroes in this book. The hot, successful, young firefighter and the tough, beguiling P.I./crime scene processor made a fabulous pair with scorching chemistry. I was hooked by Loretta on page one and drooling over Buck the moment he stepped on the page. With wonderfully devious character cameos, a powerful community of women, and a whole lot of slow-burn tension, this small-town cozy mystery checked all my boxes. Kilby’s exploration of family dynamics, toxic relationships, and the importance of women uplifting women made my heart soar. The vivid imagery her storytelling evokes (especially in a certain photo shoot scene) had me tittering like a teenager and wooping like a thirsty heaux. If you have a competency kǐnk, prepare yourself for Lieutenant Buck Rogers! If you’re looking for a he-falls-first, low-angst, slow-burn love story with a few twists, grab Young Buck now!
