Most captains would call that insane. But when a routine patrol of a border system reveals six pirate ships attacking a mining colony, Captain Brad Mendoza, Commander Katherine Henderson, and the crew of HMS Lancer will do whatever it takes to save the day!
Join Brad, Kat, and their crew as they take on their riskiest mission yet in this action-packed short story from the universe of the fan-favorite series, Dumb Luck and Dead Heroes. You'll be on the edge of your seat as they take their single battlecruiser against an entire pirate fleet and show them what it means to attack His Majesty's Navy.
This thrilling short story combines military science fiction with space opera, sci-fi adventure, and a touch of humor. It can be read independently of the other books in the series. Order and read today!
Skyler grew up in Southern California, under the best weather that state has to offer. So, he's shown a little of his insanity over the years in moving to colder, wetter places: New York City; Provo, Utah; Bainbridge Island, WA. He now resides with his family in Texas, which (apart from the humidity) gives him that great weather once again.
Skyler has been and continues to be a leader and executive with multiple Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies, working across a variety of functions, both technical and non-technical. In other words, he's very much a jack-of-all-trades but master of none. Maybe that's why he has now decided to be an author as well. In it, he’s finally found the thing he loves to do most.
Mr. Ramirez currently resides in Texas with his wife, Lindsey, and their four children.
Battle for Poe is not the first book in this series, though it is the first one I've read. It's actually listed as book #4.5. (always hate when they do that kind of thing). Despite that, it's a fairly decent story, and now I want to go back to the beginning, and see where all these characters came from. Will be interesting to watch how they got to where they were for this story. If you're a scifi fan, and you like space battles, offing pirates, and a captain that flies by the seat of his pants (so to speak), then you're likely to enjoy this series.
“Battle for Poe”, episode 4.5 in the “Dumb Luck and Dead Heroes” series, steps back to Brad's time as the Captain of HMS Lancer in the Promethean Navy. His second in command, Commander Katherine Henderson, is less than impressed when, on a hunch, he decides to delay his return to base. He hopes to locate a pirate fleet which has been terrorising a remote mining area. It is the nature of the series that it is a matter or when, not if, he finds them. And, of course, Brad will come up with a cunning plan to even the odds. So far, so very run of the mill - but the outcome of the battle brings an unexpected and unwelcome surprise. It's a quick read. 3 Stars.
I really enjoyed this addition to the Dumb luck and dead heroes series.
This was a really fast read, but that's OK, Mr. Ramirez's books are all fast reads with lots of action and drama. The characters are very much alive and interesting. The stories flow very well. I highly recommend the whole "Dumb luck" series.
A “the rest of the story” moment for fans of Brad Mendoza
A well written short story that adds nice-to-know details mentioned in the Brad Mendoza novels. It’s good to see a confident Captain Mendoza before his later crushed soul version.
I Enjoyed this book greatly, again it is a short story explaining in more detail a reference in the main books a good interesting story well worth reading I enjoyed and again so should you
A good short story, maybe a little less good than "Jalisco" but good stuff. I'm very eager to read some other Brad Mendoza's short stories. In particular the one in which he shoots a civilian ship, but I suppose it will be linked to a full book.
A good but very short read. This book (despite the number) is really a prequel to the whole Dumb Luck and Dead Heroes series where we get to the whole story behind the abbreviated version Mendoza gave Lin in book 4 (or maybe book 5?)
