It is difficult to do this piece any justice in reviewing it. It is a contribution by a Copt to the revelation and recording of the life and legacy of one of the most revolutionary saints in the history of the Coptic Church. Read the book.

The book itself, its organization, writing, and the content started off a little slow, but I find that biographies often do. But halfway through the book, I became engrossed and could not stop reading. The picture of Kyrillos’ patriarchate is fascinating and dramatic. You can’t make this stuff up! Based on the primary sources and eyewitness accounts of people intimately involved in various events, Fanous places us in the setting of Kyrillos’ life, with all its difficulties, victories, and contentions. Kyrillos’ personality is able to somewhat shine in this book as well. I found myself laughing out loud many times and crying a few times too.

The writing style and organization of the book is scholarly and clearly very well researched, but very accessible to the average reader. It is not scholarly in the sense that Fanous does not at all shy away from reporting descriptions and narrations of miracles and other supernatural happenings. Considering how widely accepted among Christians who are at all familiar with Coptic modern history that Kyrillos was a wonderworker, this is no surprise. Additionally, the supernatural is often difficult to separate from his personality, since it was so much a part of him, his life, his methods, his prayer, and his motivations. That being said, this is not an exaggerated hagiographical telling that will only appeal to those who already accept that Kyrillos was spiritually gifted. This biography is much more focused on historical context, his ascetics struggles, and most of all - his method of reform.

This is a beautiful story for anyone experiencing or witnessing corruption and dying faith who is in need of hope. And for anyone who might be curious what it is to love God sacrificially, here you’ll find what it sometimes looks like to give yourself fully and entirely to God.

ولديه مصداقية عالية جدااا فى طريقة

سرد الأحداث . والكتاب يؤرخ الفترة التى

عاش فيها البابا كيرلس منذ ولدته إلى اليوم

الذى تنيح فيه. سواء للدولة او الكنيسة .

بيذكر الكاتب كيف استلم البابا الكنيسة

مكسورة ومهشمة من اسلافة وكيف كانت

السيمونية متغلغلة فيها ويذكر الأحداث

المؤسفة للبابا يوساب التانى .والكتاب

يتحدث عن الإصلاح الذى أحدثه البابا

كيرلس بحياته النسكية و بفكره النسكى

وأهمية انه بدأ بنفسه فى التغيير وبالتالي

تلاميذه المقربين تاثروا به أيضا وبدأ

بيكشف الشخصية الجميلة و الغنية للبابا كيرلس من بداية ميلاده لحد يوم نياحته وبيقدم عنه صور اثري واعمق من انه مجرد رجل بسيط صانع معجزات
في الكتاب دا بنشوف ازاي استلم الكنيسة وهي حالتها مؤلمة ومنقسمة وتكاد تكون بتلفظ انفاسها الاخير في اجواء سياسية وثقافية صعبة و من خلال نسكه وحياة الصلاة واخلائه لذاته بدأ ثورة اصلاح وشفاء الكنيسة

Azer (Fr Mina) was among the seven kids born of the marriage of Hanna and Ester Atta, in a town called Damanhur. Glimpses of what's to come were showing up by the time he was going to be 4. The book mentions, "Hanna, Azer's brother, recalls that the family home was always open to monks from the nearby Baramous Monastery as they traveled the country to collect donations. Before Azer had celebrated his fourth birthday, in 1906, an elderly monk by the name Fr Tadros el-Baramousy knocked on the family door. The monk was accompanied by a certain Saweros, who assisted him because of his failing vision. The boy Azer was mesmerized. He gazed in innocent curiosity at the monk's long white beard. After a brief period of restrained observation, as is characteristic of children, Azer found immense joy in climbing up and smothering the elderly monk.

The sweltering desert night, though tempered by the coastal breezes typical of the region, drew long. Oblivious to the mundane conversation of adults that often persists long into the night, the child fell asleep on the monk's lap. Esther, rather embarrassed, quietly mumbled an apology and immediately made to carry away the sleeping Azer. Fr Tadros serenely protested and looked her in the eyes. His words would never be forgotten: "Let him sleep here because he is from our stock. He is one of us."

One character all people close to father Mina notice is his silence. His biography shades light to his desire for solitude since he was a young man. "Since my early youth, I was inclined to quietness, seclusion, and would wear black clothing. This longing for silence didn't stop after joining the monastery of el baramous, but rather increased as he wanted to later leave the monastic community to live in the desert.

"You are only thirty years old" said the monks, ... and have only been a monk for five years. Do you want to live the life of solitude in which monks with thirty or forty years of experience have failed? Or is it that you wish to escape responsibility, either at the Faculty [Theological College] or in the monastery? Also, there is the physical danger of living alone in a cave in the desert...That is why we absolutely do not agree...

Fr Mina patiently endured their resistance. 'My fathers and brothers, he quietly responded, I appreciate your love and care for me. I appeal to you as an obedient son asking for the opinion of his fathers who have spent many years worshipping God. You know more about the mysteries of the solitary life than I. But I also trust that the Lord Jesus Christ will prepare the narrow road that I will travel.
... I will be the obedient son and will not walk in any way without the guidance of my spiritual father."

The book also mentions Fr Mina's love for the Divine Liturgy, "Just before three o'clock one morning, still in the trance of slumber, Fr Mina went to knead the gorban only to find that the oven had been deliberately destroyed. Apparently, according to Hanna's account, their daily liturgical habit had become the cause of some contention. We may also reasonably suggest that at the time, in early-twentieth-century Egypt, the very notion of a daily Liturgy was unheard of; and, therefore, their practice may have understandably provoked some jealousy, or at the least, disturbance, given the unavoidable noise in the quiet of the night.

Had anyone else been in that helpless situation, the matter would have been concluded at a more reasonable hour. Not so for Fr Mina. He rushed to [his friend] awakening him with some panic and explained the disaster: without the gorban, it would be impossible to celebrate the Divine Liturgy. But Mina had an ingenious idea. Recalling that the bakery across the street opened in the early hours of the morning, he asked the owner whether he could bake the gorban in its oven. And so, undeterred by the momentary delay, the Liturgy was "celebrated as usual." Perhaps it was on that occasion that Fr Mina minted his famous adage: "If the priest is present, flour is handy, and the altar is available," he would repeat with conviction, "[then] if we don't pray, what shall we say to God?" It is vital to discern here the beginnings of a eucharistic devotion, or even more, a modus vivendi (way of living). Fr mina speaks, "Just as the Cross reveals the self-emptying of Christ, the Eucharist is the counterintuitive revelation of Christ under a visible form."

Fr Mina was also a confessor to many prominent figures that helped to heal the coptic church through the Sunday School Movement. "If anyone of us complained, Abdel messih (one of the university students) recalls, [Fr Mina] used to say, 'You want to pray at a church, here is a church, pray? He had little time to dwell on negatives.
It was this attitude that most marked Fr Mina's capacity as a confessor. "I personally remember, continues Abdelmessih, that I could go to him any time...whenever I felt worn out I ran to him; he was my confession father. He never let one leave depressed but rather only having hope. [In confession], he would look to the ground and quote sayings of the saints, mingling them with familiar words of wisdom and the Scriptures...He had a remarkable capacity to encourage...He embraced and uplifted people. We used to go to him burdened and threw everything on him; and he carried us with a smile, peace, and power."

Warning - Refrain from praising the written note or the writer because it is vain. Instead, praise God for everything.

Absolutely incredible! I was amazed at the beautiful and seamless combination of rigorous historical academic scholarship and pastoral spiritual edification. An appreciated addition to the Coptic Orthodox Library.

p.s. there are a couple of times where the book is a bit slow, but take heart! It definitely picks up and is SO worth it:)

كتاب رائع جداً
من أكثر ما عجبني أنه يؤرخ حياة البابا كيرلس من مولده و يكتب شرح وافي لحال الكنيسة و البلد من ساعة مولده لحتى مماته
فنفهم من هذا كيف كان حال الكنيسة حين تسلمها و كيف اثرت حال البلد على الكنيسة و كيف سلمها

الخلاصة: قداسة البابا كيرلس و نسكه هم اساس نهضة الكنيسة في هذا الوقت

"من هو البابا كيرلس؟ هل هو من يصنع المعجزات؟ من يخرج الشياطين؟" سأل أبونا رافائيل بهدوء وهو يهز رأسه: "هذا ليس كل شى عن البابا كيرلس، ولكن إذا كنت تريد أن تعرف من هو حقًّا، فسأخبرك ..ص٤٠٧

قدمت إستير، قبل وفاتها المفاجئة، لابنها الصغير هدية غير عادية ونادراً ما تلفت انتباه أحد ... لقد عرَّفته على قديس رائع تم نسيانه بشكل كبير فى مطلع القرن ... على الرغم من أن الكثير قد كُتب عن علاقة عازر بمارمينا، إلا أنه لم يُقَلْ سوى القليل عن بداية العلاقة وتأثيرها. ص٣٦
كان مارمينا، شخصيًّا ومن خلال ديره، مصدر قوة وراحة للبابا كيرلس. تلقى فى الدير بصيرة وإلهاماً لطريقته الإصلاحية، وكان هناك دائماً "يحل" مشاكل الكنيسة - غالباً بأكثر الطرق روعة.ص٣٣٧

إن عظة واحدة، لأبونا مينا البرموسى أثناء دراسته بكلية اللاهوت الرهبانية بحلوان، قد نالت إعجاباً شديداً من البابا يؤانس التاسع عشر تجعل تفضيل أبونا مينا للصمت أمراً صادماً جدًّا ، وعلى الأقل تنفى بقوة أى ادعاء بعدم كفائته أو سطحية تفكيره. ص١٠٣

على الرغم من أنه كان متواضعاً دائماً، يجب أن ننتبه أنه فى الوقت نفسه لا يعرف الخوف فى سعيه وراء هذه الحقيقة(حادثة الرهبان السبعة). هاتان الصفتان؛ التواضع والشجاعة التى لا بمكن إنكارها، ستؤثران إلى الأبد على أسلوبه الكنسى فى الإخلاء.ص١٤٩

عند النظر إلى نهضة الكنيسة القبطية فى القرن العشرين، سعى العديد من الباحثين إلى حصر من الذى بدأ حركة الإصلاح إما فى شخص أبونا مينا البرموسى أو حبيب جرجس، على الرغم من أن الواقع كان أكثر غموضاً وتعقيداً. ص٢٠٩

يبدأ الإصلاح بالنور: القدرة على رؤية الأشياء كما هى فى الحقيقة.
مع انتشار هذا "النور" (حبيب جرجس) كالنار فى جميع أنحاء القاهرة والجيزة، تشكلت الحركة ... حركة مدارس الأحد.ص٢١١
إن البذور التى زرعها فى يوم من الأيام حبيب جرجس، والتى نماها ووجهها وقواها أبونا مينا، من شأنها أن تجتاح مصر فى خلال عقد من الزمان. وهنا(فى كنيسة مارمينا مصر القديمة حيث كان يعيش أبونا مينا) تلتقى حركات(مدارس الأحد) الجيزة وشبرا؛ هنا بالمعنى الحقيقى - الحرفى والمجازى- أصبح أبونا مينا اب اعتراف حركة مدارس الأحد. هنا، تحت هذا السقف العجيب جدًا،
أصبح أب اعتراف الاصلاح نفسه. ص٢٢٩
نجد هنا فى مارمينا مصر القديمة، مجموعة من الخدام العلمانيين، والكهنة، والرهبان، ورؤساء الأديرة، والأساقفة، والمطارنة، علاوة على اثنين من البطاركة. ص٢٢٩
فى خلال عقد واحد وتحت هذا السقف المميز لدير مارمينا فى مصر القديمة، يمكننا أن نجد من دون استثناء تقريباً كل صوت إصلاحى للكنيسة القبطية فى القرن العشرين. ص٢٢٨
كان من بين هؤلاء الشباب الذين تتلمذوا على يد أبونا مينا المتوحد فى دير مارمينا فى مصر القديمة ... على سبيل المثال لا الحصر:
- وهيب عطالله (المطران الأنبا غريغوريوس أسقف البحث العلمى ١٩١٩-٢٠٠١)
- عبد المسيح بشارة (الأنبا أثناسيوس مطران بنى سويف ١٩٢٣-٢٠٠٠)
- ميخائيل خليل (الأنبا دوماديوس مطران الجيزة ١٩٢٥-٢٠١١)
- سليمان رزق (الأنبا مينا رئيس دير مارمينا ١٩٢٣-١٩٩٦)
- يوسف اسكندر (أبونا متى المسكين ١٩١٩-٢٠٠٦)
- نظير جيد (البابا شنودة الثالث ١٩٢٣-٢٠١٢)
- سعد عزيز ( الأنبا صموئيل أسقف الخدمات العامة ١٩٢٠-١٩٨١)

إن شخصيات القديسين الرائعة التى قفزت من صفحات الأدب الرهبانى المبكر (التى اكتشفتها حركة مدارس الأحد، ولكن اعتقدت أنها لم تعد موجودة) كانت متجسدة أمامهم فى شخص أبونا مينا .... يقال إن حركة مدارس الأحد كانت بمثابة إيقاظ ورد فعل على فقدان الجذور التاريخية للهوية القبطية. إذا كان هذا صحيحاً، فهنا، فى كنيسة مصر القديمة، تجسمت تلك الهوية فى لحم ودم (أبونا مينا البرموسى).ص٢٣٣

إذا كان الإصلاح الحقيقي للكنيسة يبدأ بإقامة سر الإفخاريتيا كما أشار الأب ألكسندر شميمان ذات مرة، فإن نهضة الكنيسة ، على الأقل فى مصر القرن العشرين، قد بدأت أولاً فى الحياة الإفخارستية للأب مينا. كانت حياتة مركزة أساسا على المكان الذى تلتقى فيه السماء والأرض؛ سر الافخارستيا؛ وبالتالى، التقت السماء والأرض بطرق لا يمكن فهمها فى الحياة الشخصية والكنسية والوطنية لبطريرك المستقبل. ص١٠١، ١٠٢

"كان البابا كيرلس السادس يعيش حياة صلاة وتأمل، رجل صامت يعمل فى الخفاء، لا يسعى إلى الأضواء بل يكرس حياته لله"
"ظل صامتا أمام الانتقادات التى وُجّهت إليه، مفضلا الرد بالأفعال بدلا من الكلمات، فكانت أفعاله تتحدث عنه أكثر من أى بيان رسمى"
"حتى فى الأوقات العصيبة، بقى صامتا، متمسكا بإيمانه وصلاته"
"لم يكن صمته ضعفًا، بل قوة مستمدة من روحانية عميقة."
"اختار أن يكون صامتًا أمام التجارب، مؤمنًا بأن الله يتولى تدبير كل شيء."
"كان صمته أبلغ من أي خطاب، فقد عبّر بسكونه عن حكمة لا تحتاج إلى كلمات."
"في لحظات الصلاة، كان صامتًا تمامًا، غارقًا في التأمل الروحي."

ارتبط بأذهاننا من صغرنا أن البابا كيرلس السادس هو رجل الصلاة والمعجزات. فقط!. ولم نسأل أنفسنا قط كيف كان يدير الكنيسة كبطريرك؟

لقد قاد البابا كيرلس السادس الكنيسة كربان ماهر ... أجازها بنعمة المسيح من العاصفة وأوصلها لبر الأمان ... أو ل(ميناء الخلاص) كما يُحب أن يسميها.

تسلم كنيسة مهشمة عانت على مدى عقود متتالية من التهميش والتدهور الرعوى والروحى والرهبانى. وتركها كنيسة مزدهرة كبستان جميل يتزين بأولاده الرهبان والكهنه والاساقفه والمطارنة... يتزين بشعب عادت له ثقته فى الكنيسة ورجال الاكليروس ... شعب أحب الصلاة كما أحبها البابا كيرلس ... شعب عشق القداسات كما عشقها البابا كيرلس ...

حقا كما قال الأنبا أنطونيوس مطران سوهاج والقائم مقام البطريرك فى يوم قداس النياحه:"أنا يا سيدى إذا تكلمت قد يخوننى لسانى، وقد تخوننى مشاعرى، وبغض النظر عما أقوله؛ فمهما قلت لا أوفيك حقك، فقد كنت قديساً عظيماً بمعنى الكلمة."

A Must Read

Never in my life have I felt ever so strongly about recommending a book. An incredibly powerful documentation of an absolutely strong personality in the Coptic Church; Pope Kyrillos the 6th. Not only was it an accurate documentation of life events, but also a careful analysis and dissection of how God has saved the Coptic Church in the 20th century through the life of this giant. Incredible read. Highly recommend

A book about Egyptian Coptic Pope Kyrillos VI - I admit I knew nothing about him nor much about the modern history of the Coptic Church. So it was interesting. But I prefer reading Christian biographies rather than hagiographies, and this one though both tends to the hagiographic side. The difference in my mind is that biographers tend to report things that can be verified from sources. Hagiographies tend to be written in praise of someone and so report all kinds of 'favorable' stories even if they can't be verified. Hagiographies tend to overlook sources critical of the main character. They also don't make an effort to reconcile contradictory evidence. Fanous occasionally points out that there is little evidence for a certain claim or criticizes the critics in order to maintain a positive view of Kyrillos but by repeating the claims he gives the impression that they are facts whereas sometimes he notes he couldn't coroborate the evidence. Hagiographers do this to ensure that the readers feel the holiness of the subject, but I generally tend to find such efforts to diminish all the 'miracles' of the person as one cannot be sure any of the 'miracles' happened rather than having gained embellishments over time.

قاد الكنيسة بروح "الإخلاء الكنسي" متنازلا عن أي كرامة شخصية وأي مجد أرضي من أجل نهضة الكنيسة وشفاؤها من جروح عميقة كانت قد تأصلت فيها لسنين كثيرة. محتملاً الكثير في سبيل ذلك.
كان صمته سمة مميزة له وكثيراً ما جلب له الكثير من اللوم والإهانة ولكنه كان يعلم أن لا يوجد حلول قد يقدمها البشر ولكن كل الحلول عند الله الذي يستجيب لآنات القلب.
تتلمذ علي يديه كل عمالقة جيلنا امثال البابا شنودة الثالث والانبا غريغوريوس اسقف البحث العلمي والانبا صموئيل وابونا صليب سوريال وغيرهم الكثير فأخذوا من روحه الكثير وقادوا نهضة ال��نيسة في عصرنا الحديث.
أن البابا كيرلس ليس مجرد بطريرك قاد الكنيسة لعقد او يزيد ولكنه أب لكل المؤمنين علي مدي العصور.
ذلك الغريب الذي أراد أن يعيش غريباً وأن يموت غريباً ولكن الله وضعه علي المنارة كي يضيء لكل النفوس ويصل بهم إلي ميناء الخلاص.

Given my love for Saint Pope Kyrillos VI, I had high expectations of this biography, and the author Daniel Fanous did not disappoint. This is an insightful, extremely well researched, well-referenced and well-written account of a life devoted to Christ amongst a backdrop of political unrest and persecution. A demonstration of how one man's kenoticism transformed, renewed and strengthened the Coptic Church in Egypt and consequently throughout the world. This book reminds us that through Christ good does triumph over evil. It is a story of spiritual formation and reformation that contains many a tucked-away gem ready to shine for the reading.

Easily my greatest read of this year.

I learnt so much about my beautiful Church and have fallen more and more in love with her.

I knew bits and pieces about my dear St Kyrollos, but I feel like I know him intimately now. The amount of jaw drop moments, tears & literal gasps in amazement during my read of this is uncanny. I could barely control myself in public with this book.

Easily one of the most important works of this decade.

P.S. Who was gonna tell me Coptic history is so juicy ?!

It’s a must read book. It is an extensive study about pope Kyrillos. In this book , the author will take you back in time to dig very deep in history, to put some light on a dark period in our church history and how miraculously God chose his shepherd to make a spiritual revolution , as per the author nothing in Christian history can compare to it but what Paul the apostle did in early church years.

كتاب في غاية الروعة .. بيشرح فيه معجزة الاصلاح الكنسي لكنيسة تعتبر جثة هامدة ليقيمها المسيح عن طريق قديسه البابا كيرلس اللي قام باخلاء ذاته ليظهر المسيح فانكر نفسه وتواضع واختفى لتظهر يد المسيح و تعالج كنيسة تم ايذاءها عن طريق بشر احبوا الظهور ووضعوا ايديهم فوق يد المسيح بكل وقاحة ... اذا يوضح الكتاب معجزة الاصلاح الكنسي والنهضة الروحية الاروع من زمان الرسل

Exceptional book. Not only is it an amazingly educational biography into the life of a modern day saint, it is incredibly inspirational as well. God clearly worked through Fr. Daniel to gather and beautifully portray such a thorough history of Pope Kyrillos before all of the letters and eye witnesses could be lost to time.

The book is a well documented historical record of the late Pope Kyrillos the sixth. Who is a well known Pope, reformer and above all Saint. A good addition to the many books about Pope Kyrillos to the English reader.

This book not only told me a lot about Pope Kyrollos, it gave the context in which he shepherded the church of Egypt, a timenthat was tumultuous for political reasons as well as spiritual ones. I truly enjoyed it.

This book served as the gateway to learn more about the saints of the Church. With a modern Patriarch and saint like Pope Kyrillos, I learned the great value saints can have my spiritual life. Also a wonderful book in learning about the modern history and environment of our Church

كتاب في منتهى الجمال والروعة حقيقي
سرد وتحليل سلسل وممتع جدًا لسيرة قديس وبطريرك كان مؤثر في الكنيسة، ربما بدون قصد او بدون تصنُّع. كان نسكه الشخصي سبب تأثيره الذي غير مجرى تاريخ الكنيسة، والذي ما زال يرعاها حتى بعد نياحته.

Here is a man, a Saint, whose prayer life and devotion to God is clearly above and beyond mine, creating in me a hunger for more. His deep inner life with God, strengthened by his adherence to the teachings of St. Isaac the Syrian and his love for the 3rd century St. Menas, a holy Martyr, transformed his outer world, th Coptic Orthodox Church from sickness to health. I would add that I am a witness to one of his miracles, which inspired me to buy this book.

Lovely read for any Coptic Christian, well-referenced with sources not previously familiar, good research into the life of Pope Kerolos the 6th.

This has definitely become one of my favourite books; just heightened my love for this saint and explained his asceticism in such a beautiful way. Will definitely reread.
