I’ve never had sturdy before.

I’ve been the center of this town’s rumor mill for years. Between my father’s outburst ten years ago that left me orphaned, to now. Finding my boyfriend, my son’s father, in my bed with another woman; our family curse came back to haunt me. Now I’m forced to spend my days on the Ranch that killed my daddy and worse yet, with Crew Cassidy. The quiet home-town hero.

I feel like I can breathe again.

I don’t know what made me take her case. It could have been my brother's convincing but as soon as I opened her file and caught a glimpse of the storm behind her blue eyes…I knew I wanted to know more about her. I’m doing this for her son. So he doesn’t have to suffer the same fate she did. But the longer I spend with Logan Shepard, the more I’m realizing my heart is screwed

Ok, let's unpack this rating, so hang in there with me! Spoilers, obviously. I'm just going to dive in.

My biggest issue with this book is the lack of explanation to readers. Jumping into this book, it almost felt like I was jumping into the middle of non-standalone series. When I went to go look if there was a series or novella before the promoted 1st book of the series, there was none. Both of the authors are fairly new authors, so I'm pretty sure I didn't miss it.

Characters are mentioned willy nilly, and it almost feels like we were expected to know who they are and their connections. I was stuck trying to figure out who owned the ranch, who the brothers are, etc. Dot, an apparent mother-like figure to all these male characters, was mentioned once or twice, and we finally met her at like 75%. I kept scratching my head, trying to figure out who this woman was. It was like this for every character, and as a fan of found family, I didn't really feel like the MCs found their family with this crew. It also didn't help that everyone hated the FMC.

Next item on the list... The back story and history of the characters. We BRIEFLY get a small explanation on Logan's (FMC) tragic history. With how she let it affect her life and dictated the way she grew up, I think we as readers deserved more of an explanation. It's hardly discussed between the characters, and Crew (MMC) keeps bringing up her anger problems. Anger problems that she apparently acquired from her dad? I wanted more.

Also, why are all the townspeople hateful towards the FMC? Is it all because of her dad? It's BARELY mentioned - and not even between the MCs - that Logan is a victim from her past. I agree that she was, but with how it was glossed over, I wasn't a fan. As I mentioned above, I also wasn't a fan of this untold hatred the people at Whiskey River Ranch had for the FMC. Yes, her dad was an alcoholic and was fired from the ranch, but why is that Logan's issue? She was treated with so much hate and bias.

Alright, ready for the next one? I didn't feel any chemistry between the MCs. The hatred between the two was expressed, but all of a sudden, the MMC is interested. I know you're probably thinking that this is a popular trope, but trust me, you'll be left wanting more details and chemistry. The groundwork to this couple's relationship wasn't there. Someone else mentioned in their review, and they explained it perfectly about the spicy scenes. I could care less about the smut. Because the groundwork isn't there, the smut almost felt meaningless.

I'm now going to briefly mention other issues I had with the book.... Plotholes. I've already mentioned some major ones, but there were several minor ones that irrked me. Ready for another? Can someone explain to me why the characters keep walking into the shower with clothes on? I let it slide the 1st time it happened, but when it happened again, I felt utterly outraged. I really didn't want to read about the soggy bra and jeans you took off after getting in the shower. They're an established couple at this point, so it wasn't necessary. Lastly, the timeline. How is it already 6 months from the start of the book when barely anything has happened? The skip felt unnecessary, and we (readers) quite literally hardly even notice.

I feel like both authors spent so much time trying to put tropes in the book that they didn't focus on the development of the storyline and characters. Not to be mean, but at this point, I feel like the book needs a workover.

Thank you to the authors for an ARC. While it wasn't for me, it might be for other readers.

I can’t remember— if ever— I began a book in which the first chapter had my blood boiling the way it did in Huckleberry. And had my attention so completely, utterly, wholly, truly, endlessly caught.

I was all a flamed! And I was raging for our heroine Logan. Within just a few pages, really just a few sentences, I was all in for Logan, I desperately wanted to fiercely protect her against the clear injustice being thrown her way. I barely knew this character, but I so instantly knew I would have her back. Her emotions rippled off the page and there was no looking away. I felt it all and needed to see this through.

And we’re not even to chapter two and look at how deep in the feels I already was!!! This book so quickly and effortlessly reeled me in.

I was getting ready to put my boxing gloves on, I was ready to throw hands, put me in coach, I want to fight!

Whewww! Let me calm down, let me calm down.

NO. Because my elevated blood pressure didn’t cease because not long after the injustice our heroine faces we then meet our hero Crew and, boy, I was SWOONING. Suddenly my blood was on fire for very different reasons, wooo. I was smitten, I was over the moon, seated on cloud 9, Logan was not, but she’ll get there soon enough, fear not. But I’m there! And I went from fanning the flames of anger to fanning the flames of love.

Will I calm down?! Still no!!!

Because it’s tension galore, it’s electric chemistry, it’s a fire that burns and burns and burns, and I simply can’t get enough!!!!

My girl Logan is all claws, all bite— she’s a fierce mama bear and I adore her and want to protect her, but now Crew is here so I guess I’ll let him do that job, but then they have to go and fall in love and of course I fall in love too! But we have so much engaging plot to get through alongside the love story! And we have a ranch to tend to! Aaand a scummy ex to deal with! Oh, not to mention a little boy to nurture and protect!

Okay, Logan and Crew handle it all really well, but I was too IMMERSED! I needed to be part of this story too! Once again, coach, put me in, I beg!

Alas, all I can do is stay on the sidelines and watch it from afar.

And what a damn good time I have at it.

This contemporary romance has the makings of all my top favorite things. Top favorite tropes, top favorite character archetypes, top favorite climaxes (mind out of the gutter but also yes!) and resolutions! It worked incredibly well. I never once felt disconnected from the story, it never lagged, it kept a high energy that was invigorating I truly felt I was there living it all, from the heart-wrenching moments to the sweetest, swooniest ones.

One side note before I wrap things up. Often times romances are promoted by trope list, and so many times contemporary romances are hyped with the “touch her and die” trope. And, look, I admit I roll my eyes good-naturedly when I see books like these promoted at such, because unless it’s a dark or fantasy romance, I think it’s safe to say that just means some alpha men marking his territory via growling. And don’t get me wrong— I’ll eat it up every time. Every single time. But, y’all, believe the authors as they hype this one up with that trope. Oooh boy, I shan’t say more, but I ate it up and then some!

And then some!

They took a trope and said, watch this.

Keep those eyes open, folks!

You most certainly don’t want to miss this.

I fear this isn’t a very coherent review, but I am still riding such a high for this one. I can’t wait to have a physical copy in my hands to make sure I place it front and center on my bookshelf. It’s the spot it deserves. An all-time favorite has been born. So please, if you’re reading this review without having read the book, I encourage you to click that “want to read” and to then secure “read” upon release.

You won’t regret it. Now time for me to invent a memory wipe machine so I can read this one for the first time all over again, see yaaa!

Thank you Jessica Norton and Aubrey Taylor for this complimentary copy, I leave this honest review voluntarily.

This book has such a memorable plot. It started out strong with a problem to be fixed throughout the story.

The two main characters started out not liking each other much but somewhat quickly developed into something more.

The only thing I felt wasn’t answered was if Logan finished her time at the ranch. It wasn’t super clear about that but I guess with the timing of the end of the book readers can put two and two together.

Read if you like—
- cowboys on a ranch
- touch her and die
- dual POV
- spicy scenes
- good banter
- some suspenseful scenes
- cute little boy
- found family

TW- domestic abuse and violence

Thank you for the ARC so much! I really enjoyed this book! Publish date is 8/26/24

Huckleberry by Aubrey Taylor, Jessica Norton is a captivating read for fans of contemporary romance who crave a heartwarming tale of second chances, family secrets, and the power of redemption, as it masterfully weaves together themes of resilience, forgiveness, and the unbreakable bonds of love and family.

ARC review

Logan. you have my heart girl. from one crappy man to the next, she had it rough. following her upbringing and people judging her because of her daddy... my heart breaks for her.

can I pick a favorite side character? if so it's Bode, he's funny for no reason

We stan Crew! putting Carl disgusting behind in check? always a win in my book.

Crew goes toe to toe with Logan and I love it. he don't let her anger get to him.  y'all he falls first. I repeat. HE. FALLS. FIRST!!!!!

and don't get me started on THAT KISS???? OMG PLEASE. HE'S SO HOT I CAN'T. the fact that he is good with Logan's son? be still my heart. he cooked and cleaned for her while she was sick because he knew she wouldn't ask. this man is so sweet and thoughtful.

I wanna like Ford, but he's asking for me to punch him.

alright, lets get together and beat Tommy a**. I'm sick of him and would like for him to not exist. why did I know he was gonna piss me off? I'm so sick of him.

overall, I really enjoyed this book. it was so fast paced and captivating that I constantly found myself wanting to read it. I truly can't wait for Bode's book because he was hilarious in this one

Thank you so much to the authors for giving me an ARC to review.

This is a super cute love story between Logan and Crew. Logan is a single mother just trying to make ends meet but gets into trouble when she assaults her ex with a baseball bat. This leaves her with community service and anger management, which is where Logan comes in. The main three characters, especially Crew are really nice but all the characters in this book are so frustrating. Overall the story is nice but I feel like so many details were left out. The story just kinda jumps around and doesn't go into dept where it should.

”I crave peace and quiet. Well, I craved it until the tornado with blue eyes sitting next to me walked onto the ranch. Now I find myself chasing the storm.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Single mom in danger of losing her son
Ex-military turned rancher MMC
Dislike to love
Touch her and die
Morally grey cowboys

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐀 𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊!! If you're looking for your next page turning cowboy romance, this is the one! From chapter one, I was so hooked into the story of Logan Shepard, single mom who is fighting for custody of her son from her abusive ex but also perilously close to ending up in jail herself. Her family's reputation haunts her in their small town and she accepts the lesser sentence of a ranch rehabilitation program, headed by none other than ex-military golden boy / cowboy, Crew Cassidy.

You know what I'm a sucker for every time? REALLY badass, strong, independent FMCs and the men who fight to show them that they are worthy of love! Logan is fierce & protective and has put up so many walls to guard her emotions, convincing herself she's unloveable. Then comes CREW CASSIDY. Ladies, your hearts will be in a puddle after reading all the ways this man RELENTLESSLY works to show her she's worthy!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

The plot in this book was equal parts funny, sweet and suspenseful. I struggled to put it down and absolutely loved the places & characters that Jessica and Aubrey painted in my mind. This will be a must-read for morally grey cowboy romance fans and I can't wait to see what comes next in the Whiskey River series!

Thank you to Jessica & Aubrey for the ARC in exchange for an honest review 🩵

I received this book as an ARC - my very first - and I have never been so excited to read something.

Crew and Logan stole my heart, as well as little Ash. The slow built of them getting closer and understanding each others anger and general feelings was written very good. The way things escalated with Tommy made it very interesting!

In the beginning I was not sure I was going to like Logan with her anger but throughout the book I also got to understand her better.
Crew seemed like a sweetheart from the start, his army background fit perfectly.
The way these to went at each other at the start of their story was funny and felt very authentic.
☀️
“Why are you being so nice to us, Crew?” “Because, despite what you believe, not all kindness comes at a cost.”
☀️

The dynamic between Crew and Cam was very sweet and I’d interested to read more from his side.
The way all of the boys came together to get Ash back kept me on the edge of my seat.
Very excited for the next book - the second book ‘teaser’ also sounded very good.

To conclude this, I loved this book, the way the story built made it hard to put the book down. Everything about this was perfect!

Huckleberry is such a heart gripping, beautiful love story. But it’s also so much more. With Crew and Logan, it’s like watching a tornado on a sunny day.
No matter how harsh the storm is, there will always be a settled and calm peace in the end. With them, I could really feel every aspect of love. The raw and real. That the right person will care for and love you no matter the sharp and shattered pieces from both sides. That’s why they’re so special to me.

First of all, this is THAT story for me. I really needed this one at the moment. The one that I just loved instantly with all my heart and that I could see myself in at different points. I could really pull those strings and connect with on so many levels. Especially Logan. She’s just an incredible strong and fierce woman, a real fighter for her and adorable son Ash. She keeps her distance but she has her reasons of course. Logan is a character that I’ll always admire for what she have accomplished and how much growth there has been within her character.

Crew is such a kind and caring soul I think he actually broke my heart in the most beautiful way. That’s how much his love bounced back on me. Although the sharpness both had towards each other at first, he really is this thick massive tree trunk but so soft and warm on the inside. He wants to be there for Logan and Ash, to help them and make Logan see she’s so much more than she can let herself understand. Even though Logan had a tough shell in the beginning, Crew saw past it and made sure to be gentle peeling through every single layer. Cuz damn this man was falling hard and I don’t underhand how Logan wasn’t just 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 once it happened cuz that was definitely me lol. The relationship between him and Ash was one of the most precious things ever! Such a soft spot for me 🥹

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to be an arc reader! When two wonderful writers get their minds together, magic happens! I’m so proud of you 🤍 Huckleberry is now available on Amazon and KU!

First of all: thank you Aubrey and Jessica for letting me read Huckleberry! I loved it with all my heart. The story brought me so much comfort and happiness; it was truly healing! I enjoyed every second of it. The characters were perfectly written with their flaws and struggles, and there’s no way I couldn’t fall in love with them. Especially the relationship between Ash and Crew. The three of them will forever have a place in my heart. I have so many favorite chapters lmao. I don’t even know where to begin. There were so many moments my heart warmed up because of the love that Crew gave to Logan and even though sometimes it was some tough love, it fit them perfectly….and now I wanna live in a cabin in the middle of the woods too lmao.
The writing was sooooo good (I didn’t expect anything else from both of them). And yes, Jessica, you ARE a cutie patootie. I love you guys so much and I’m so proud of you both! This book is phenomenal and YOU did that. You can be so proud of yourselves! Thank you for bringing Crew, Logan and Ash to us. I’m already so excited for the next Whiskey River book. I know it’s going to be awesome!

4.5 ⭐️ rounded up!

“i need her more than i’ve needed anything in a long time. her smiles, her nights and her days.“

i just knew this book was going to be good given who the authors are, but when my heart rate started to steadily rise and i was feeling every emotion under the sun while reading, i knew it was going to be one i’d forever remember.

logan and crew are two people who desperately needed each other, even if they didn’t know it right off the bat. the way that crew helped logan through literally everything meant everything to me. i really appreciated that he would reassure logan that his help wasn’t transactional or meant to be taken any other way than the fact that he simply just wanted to help her and wanted to be there for her. they both definitely felt things for one another from their first interaction on the ranch, but the journey it took for them to actually say something and do something about it was so sweet (and a lot of bit sexy).

thank you, jessica and aubrey, for this masterpiece. i’m obsessed.

i reallyyyyy hope book two is in the works because i’m itching to get my hands on it!

3/5 but let me be clear - 3 is not a bad thing from me! I really enjoyed this ARC! And I will be reading the rest of the series.

✨MMC instalove
✨Domestic violence survivor
✨Single mom who deserves better
✨Men who give off Yellowstone vibes

Overall, I enjoyed the story, especially Crew's love and patience toward Logan. But I must say that Logan's anger FUELLED me with rage to the point I struggled to read it at times - I understand her anger but usually I read to relax and every time I put the book down I was wound up 😂 But I had to keep reading because I wanted to know if the system would continue to fail her or if she'd finally get her HEA 🥹

This book is shouting freedom, but really. Frankly, it was wonderful in its own – even with this challenging topic. It will stay with me for a long time, that's for sure.

Logan was a very strong and really persistent protagonist, full of surprise and strength. She improved tremendously over the course of the book, and honestly, she really needed that. Crew, well, let's just say he was more complex than anyone else. He had things I couldn't identify with, but I have to say that he did everything for Logan and Ash (my sweet boy is the corner of my heart), for which I owe him so much. I truly believe that he has finally begun to heal from his past and believe in the light again.

The supporting characters all added a lot to the narrative — or necessarily took away. Either way, I really fell in love with them, each in its own way.

Their love happened a little faster for me (even faster than it should), but maybe I only felt that way because the book is so short. But their nicknames, the little moments between them, and the endless devotion and care they showed each other were just wonderful.

Well, the plot wasn't much, that's a fact, but I didn't expect much different either. It was understandable and easy to go with, there was nothing complicated or difficult to decipher. I still felt like sometimes we stayed very much afloat and it didn't move much. I think the pace was quite ok, maybe I would say it was mediocre. The wording - I can't believe I'm saying this - was quite good, I'm not saying ‘it was a Shakespeare’, but it was appropriate in its own name. The ending was nicely closed and there were no questions left in my mind, I loved the endless peace and happiness that surrounded them. Everyone deserved that.

I recommend it to those who love (morally grey) cowboys, with a hint of romance and full of unforgettable moments.

I was blessed to receive an arc for this book and man was it a great time y’all. There’s so much to say and only so many words I can use to try and convince y’all to read this book once it’s released.

Logan is a guarded woman raising her son in a small town with a lot to say about her and her family. And Crew is a stubborn man determined to break down her walls and show her she doesn’t have the weather the storm of life alone.

The writing was absolutely beautiful in this book. So damn well done.

What’s not to love about morally grey cowboys, black cat and golden retriever, and enough action to keep you on your toes wondering what’s coming next. So much excitement, smut, and emotion packed into this story.

The names also have my heart, I’ll always love boys names for girls. And when she calls him grizzly?? I lose it.

The found family within this book is also top tier.

As always, check your trigger warnings and protect your peace friends🫶🏻

I’m excited to continue the journey in Whiskey River Ranch as the stories go on. Thank you to both Aubrey and Jessica for allowing me to indulge in such a great read🫶🏻❣️

**ARC review** *Publishing August 2024*

This was such a good read!

Logan and Crew were so adorable together. I loved how they worked for their relationship in order to make it work.

Logan is trying to make ends meet and everything work. She finds her boyfriend and the father of her adorable and precious child in bed with another woman. After taking matters into her own hands after the incident and trying to make things better she is forced to work at the ranch that she believes killed her daddy and made her an orphan. To say she is bitter and angry is an understatement but she goes to do the work to keep things from falling apart as best as she can.

Crew takes the case on the ranch after getting it from his brother the sheriff. He wants to help Logan keep her life together as best as she can , and keep her son. He was ready to send her away but is making things work and slowly coming to understand a little more about Logan.

As time goes on Logan and Crew become closer. Both realizing that they are starting to understand each other. Logan has to work to let her anger go and understand Crew. While Crew is working to show Logan that not all kindness comes at a cost and understand how Logan has closed herself off.

Once Crew decides to show Logan what she means to him they both realize their feelings. They work to find space for each other in their lives. They work to make the others life better while still working on what they need to work on as individuals.

Sadly the ex makes a reappearance however this time Logan isn’t standing alone. Crew makes sure Logan and her son are protected and he makes sure to show how he is willing to care of them. Crew and Logan’s son have a special relationship shop that Logan fosters since Crew is such a great man.

Crew is a morally grey ex military/cowboy who will make your heart pitter patter with all of his cute gifts and the way her cares for Logan and her son.

This book was amazing and I loved every moment. I can’t wait for the next one!!!

Logan is the woman I aspire to be. As a fellow grumpy woman I adore it when the FMC is tired of the worlds shit cause same girlie same.

Crew HOTDAMN Cassidy. Gimmeeee. I want him forever and ever. He’s actually the best person ever for Logan, making her feel so seen, so safe and so loved.

I need more from this world asap. No pressure (full pressure)

The couple: Crew and Logan

Romance trope: redemption story
Series: Whiskey River Series
Length: 246 pages

Plot: Crew found his salvation at the Whiskey River Ranch, and his brother the sheriff is hoping he can give someone else the same chance. Logan went a little wild when she caught her boyfriend cheating and is now on probation. She's in danger of losing her son over it. The sheriff knows her backstory and is asking for someone to give her a chance. Crew doesn't want to but takes on her probation as a favor to his brother. Logan is contrary on a good day and Crew doesn't put up with any nonsense. Eventually, they start to work out how to deal with each other and Crew starts to think that maybe he didn't give Logan a fair shake to begin.

Commentary: I don't guess I ever understood - beyond small-town living - why everyone in town hated Logan so much. I got that they hated her dad (although I would have liked more on what specifically happened at the ranch to make them in particular loathe him) but why did they all transfer that hate to her? She was a little girl when all that stuff (whatever it was) happened at the ranch. Why would it have anything to do with her? Not only that, nobody in town thought to check up on a little girl in a bad spot? Check on a community member who was suffering? I can't see any redeeming features of a place like that. I hate that the sheriff was the only one who knew anything real about her past, but also glad that he looked out for her. That cruelty - everyone in town treating her like a criminal because of her father - made my enjoyment less, mostly because there didn't seem to be any specific hatred behind it. It was garden-variety condescending snobbery, looking down on the girl from the other side of the tracks.

That said - I found this story to be incredibly sweet and Crew, once he realized his own feelings, was perfect for her. She needed someone to stand for her, visibly, and he did that and beyond. He went to all the lengths for her. I will definitely read more in this series.

Before I start, let me say that I feel super grateful to have received the opportunity to be able to read this ARC💜

I loved this book and I loved the whole environment and the whole story! Logan was amazing from the beginning to the end, always trying to stay strong for little Ash, I love that she is a tough woman who refuses to be helped, but then finds her safe haven in the Crew and begins to let her walls fall so that he can enter her and her son's life🥹
The Crew I don't even have words for him, the way he took care of Logan and Ash and the fact that he is willing to do everything for them!!!!

Logan and the crew are perfect for each other and bring the color that is missing in each other's life! Like i’m obsessed with them😭

Let me tell you that this book is very worthwhile and as soon as it comes out on August 26 I highly recommend you to get the book if you like a book with a single mother, a grumpy cowboy, and much more🤭🤭🤭

After an awful situation, Logan and Crew are forced to spend lots of time together. Their disdain towards each other is palpable, yet Crew can't help but feel oddly protective over her. Before long, Crew finds himself checking in on Logan, standing up for her, making sure her and her son are safe.

This was such a great series opener. I absolutely adore Logan as a person and the. Logan as a mom. Her life revolves around her son and keeping him safe. And if my mama heart didn't explode every single time that boy was on the page. 🥹

As if the banter between L & C wasn't enough to keep you turning the pages, there was a suspense storyline thrown in there that will keep you on your toes.

I loved this book and I cannnnnnooootttt wait for more from this town!

A morally grey cowboy romance series? Yes please. This book was a great introduction and definitely eased us into the darker themes. Logan Shepard is a black cat, single mom, who’s struggling. She’s sentenced to work on a ranch through a program to help convicts and winds up working side by side with Crew Cassidy, the towns golden boy. Crew starts out grumpy but when he falls, he falls HARD. He’s patient, kind, a wonderful dad to her son, and shows them what real love looks like.

Check the trigger warnings, but this is a quick, angsty, full of heart, cowboy romance! 🖤

This was a good quick read! I flew through this book!

Who doesn’t love to read about a single mom and rancher who is willing to reach out and help her?!?

We meet Logan, a single mom going through some hard times. She is trying to take care of her son Ash as best she can while she goes through this rough patch.

We also meet Crew, a rancher who helps Logan in more ways than she could imagine. He stepped up and was what Logan and Ash needed to live a happier life.

These two together were so great! Their banter back and forth, and the way they cared for each other. There were so many good moments throughout that made me smile.

Thank you so much to Aubrey and Jessica for the ARC! Huckleberry comes out in August!

I adored this cowboy romance! I loved the grumpy and grumpy but also kind of grumpy vs sunshine in there. It was a very cute dynamic! The found family (trademark AT) was absolutely perfect and I loved the morally grey aspect bubbling beneath this story. I can’t wait to get the other boys stories! (I’m looking at you Ford and Walker boys 👀)

If you love the men from Chestnut Springs, then just wait till you meet the men from Whiskey River Ranch 😏 when I saw the tropes for this book, I had to immediately sign up for it! Boy, this book did not disappoint! There's so much that happens. You meet Logan, who is a single mother who left her abusive boyfriend. She defends herself against him but is blamed for endangering her son, so she is put into a program to clean up her act. That's where she meets Crew Cassidy. He is in charge of this program and started it when he came back from serving in the army. The program helps people learn how to control their anger and fears. Logan despises the ranch and everyone in it, including Crew. He knows he has his work cut out for him but is still willing to help Logan. She has such an emotional and rough childhood, which is why she's not trusting of anyone and has her guard up. Crew can see right through Logans rough exterior and sees her for who she is 🥺 and as much as Logan tries to push Crew away, she can tell that he's what she needs. Crew shows her that she doesn't have to be tough all the time and feel alone. He's there for her and her son 💜 I fell in love with Crew! Every time he said, "pretty girl" I swooned 💓 the things he said just had me falling for him more and more! Logan calls him a mountain of a man 😮‍💨 whew! I loved seeing how Logan finally allowed herself to be loved by Crew! The banter between them and the tension was executed so well 🤌🏼 I also loved reading about the side characters in the story, such as Ford, Bode, Levi, and Cam. There is a scene in the book that reminded me of Yellowstone! These cowboys do not play! Do not mess with their women or their family 💥as for the ending, it was the perfect 🥹

Please read the trigger warnings before reading this book because there are some heavy topics ⚠️

Huckleberry comes out on August 26th on Amazon & KU!

Thank you @aubreytaylorauthor and @jessicanortonauthor for gifting me this arc!! I loved it so much 💜💜

Initially I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it but as the plot progressed! OMG! It literally kept better.

I never thought I'd read a book like this in a small town setting.

I’ll read anything by Aubrey Taylor. I’ve discovered her this year & she’s underrated! I was sooo excited when I got an arc for Huckleberry. So this is my honest review!

🌻 Small town
🌻 Second chance in life
🌻 Hate to love
🌻 Single mom
🌻 Possessive/protective MMC
🌻 He falls first
TW : violence and domestic abuse

Crew Cassidy this man. OMG I need a man like that in my life. Possessive but sweet and kind at the same time. He take care of you when you’re sick. Cook for you. He loves your son like his own.

Logan, my sweet girl. With everything she went trough in her life, she deserves to be happy. She stay strong and doesn’t give up. She’s such a good mother & we can see her trying to have a better life for her boy.

Logan & Crew together was explosive. They hate each other at first, but they are forced to spend time together… and well you know what happen. Their chemistry was crazy!

For a romance book, we have a good balance of romance and plot. Small town is a weakness of mine and these two authors didn’t disappoint.

Can’t wait to read the second book. We got a glimpse at the end & it’s sound promising!

4.5 Stars Rounded Up

Tropes:
-Single mom
-Hurt x comfort
-Small town
-He falls first
-Morally gray cowboys
-Grumpy x sunshine

This is the first book in the Whiskey River series, and follows single mom Logan Shepard and home-town hero Crew Cassidy as the two are unexpectedly thrust into one another's lives. Logan has long been the center of the small town rumor mill due to a tragic event from her childhood. Now in trouble because her anger got the better of her after finding her son's father cheating on her, she has to work a program at the Whiskey River Ranch to prove she should be the one caring for her son. Crew Cassidy runs a program on his ranch for people who need a second chance...much like he got after coming home from the military. Logan's temper, anger and stubbornness are legendary in town, and unfortunately much of it is now directed squarely at Crew. Will he be able to break through her defenses to help Logan and her son, or will broken hearts be all that are left in the wake of the storm that is Logan Shepard?

This was a small town romance that got at the heart of what it means to hurt and feel angry, and had me feeling all the emotions for Logan and Crew. Immediately upon being introduced to Logan, you know that she has been dealt a bad hand in life and is just trying to survive for her son. Logan is so reluctant to accept any kind of help, but after her experiences it is no surprise she has a hard time trusting anyone. The tension between her and Crew is palpable, and I love how that is explored throughout her time at Whiskey River Ranch. Crew also deeply understands what it means to harbor anger and hurt, and consistently shows up for Logan and her son to prove to her that she deserves all the good things life hasn't really given her. Crew falls first and hard, and I loved how protective Crew is of both Logan and Ash. Logan and Crew's relationship becomes the healing balm that both of them so desperately need. The cast of side characters are also super endearing, and I cannot wait to see future stories in this series because the characters were set up so well in this first book. The story has the perfect amount of spice, and is done in such a way to help Logan, who has honestly not been loved in the way she deserves, feel desirable and safe. There is a flash point of action that requires the men on the ranch to act, and it is suspenseful. I personally love when morally gray cowboys will stop at nothing to keep those they love safe, and this was no exception. The men of Whiskey River Ranch don't show that side often, but will not hesitate to act when a direct threat is brought to their door.

Overall, this was wrought with emotion, and is a beautiful story of finding comfort after being hurt and true love even when you don't think you are deserving. If you love small town, cowboy romance, and want a story with emotional depth that will first break your heart and then put it all back together again, add this to your TBR.

this book was cute but i wouldn't recommend. i'm a romance reader first and foremost and i'm a normal person who can empathize so of course i want the main characters to end up together happy and safe but it was hard rooting for these characters. not because they are unlikable but they're written without any development.

the book started strong but as it continues, the writing glosses over developments and feelings i wished i was able to read from logan and crew. what was more disappointing that it was a dual pov which should make it rich in feelings and changes but there wasn't much in the book. it made it hard to care about who these characters were. i wanted more about logan's anger especially considering her past and that she's doing anger management at this ranch and more pining (or anything) from crew. he seemed so resistant in the beginning, it was hard to believe he just switched it up one day. i also wish there was more bonding with logan's son and crew. it was disappointing to miss that especially when it seems her life surrounds on being able to provide for and keep him. there were a few plot holes (beyond these) that left me feeling a little unfinished.

the spice was written well and crew was written saying the perfect words to coax logan into being his but it wasn't exciting when they finally got together because that foundation wasn't laid. i just didn't care and found myself even glossing over some of the smut because without their growth, i wasn't interested in their intimacy. the ending was a very sweet bow to tie it all up that i predicted but didn't feel earned ultimately.

this still reads like a draft for me all built on tropes people (me included!!) love. all the big points were there and tropes to drive a reader in but i wished for more detail and development. a story just cannot be written around only tropes. i want to care about who these characters are and i just didn't find it here.

i can see the possibilities here though and am sure with time, the authors could really do something big and beautiful in the future.

thank you to the authors for an ARC!

✨ARC REVIEW…✨

📖:Huckleberry
✍🏼: By Aubrey Taylor & Jessica Norton
🗓️: 26th of August
⭐️: 5
🌶️: 3.5

This book. I want so badly to just tell you everything about it and get in a knee deep conversation about it and just blab about it but I’m not going to spoil it for you you’re just going to have to read it! Then we’ll talk about it! This book is packed full of emotions ups and downs but still has such a lovely ending! One of the things I love most about this book is the highlight of motherhood the importance of ash and Logan’s relationship. How strong it is and how much she is willing to do and sacrifice for her son is truly beautiful! I love the persistence of Crews character and how he doesn’t stop trying with Logan and how he sticks with her when no one else has and I’m sorry but a hot morally grey cowboy what’s not to like?! The emotions written behind both characters are so intense but also oddly relatable you feel as though you’re in the story with them and that you’re rooting for there battles. Now the spice was spicin 🌶️🥵 especially that scene in the snowy mountains can I just say Jessica and Aubrey you outdid yourselves with that scene and this book I want an ending like Crew, Logan and Ash it was truly beautiful 🥹 If you haven’t already preordered this book then what’s wrong with you?! Honestly I love these two! Also the teaser for Bodes book😍🤍

Last but never least a massive Thankyou to both Aubrey and Jessica for letting me have an ARC I am so grateful! I love these two so much their story is so beautiful and soulful 🤍

⚠️While Their story is beautiful some scenes in huckleberry may be sensitive to some readers so I recommend looking at the trigger warnings ♥️
