Xavier

Interning at the ever-growing and reputable sports agency, King Sports, has been my dream job. This is what I want to do with my life. And I have one chance to impress my boss, Damon king, that I’m perfect for one of the coveted full-time junior agent positions up for grabs at the end of the summer. I’m hoping I can get some one-on-one time with him at the upcoming King Sports corporate retreat.

The only problem is, Camden Wheeler. My nemesis. My rival. He also wants the job.

College was four years of Camden being king on campus, while it was four years of torture for me.

Being a sports agent is all I’ve ever wanted. Being a sports agent is Camden’s backup. Camden couldn’t make it in major league baseball, so now he’s trying to weasel his way into my spot, and I’m not going to let him walk all over me like he did in college.

It’s game on.

Loved Xave and Cam! I'm looking forward to the King Sports series because Damon is one of my favourite characters in the Sadenverse, and Brady's book really intrigued me for what's to come with these characters.

My only complaint is that I wish this was longer! Loved the sniping between these two and the way Camden antagonises Xavier but gives in to him every time 😂

Quite boring and predictable, but the sex is great.

If you've read Finley's #Fake Boyfriend series, you'll remember Damon, who became a sports agent representing gay athletes and this series is about his company and the agents who work for him.

🟢 College rivals
🟡 Gay/bisexual
🟣 About 23 years old, then epilogue about a decade later
🔵 Some size difference
🟠 Pining, secret crush
🟢 Forced proximity, 2 days, then the epilogue
🌶️ Sex is about the only great thing here, wish there could be more; rimming is the first scene, some oral, kissing, penetrative; both vers but only t/b in this book

This book doesn't differ much from most of the author's solo work, meaning it's highly predictable and borders on overly cheesy at times. The main characters start off somewhat engaging and while the setting is well done and the characters are decent enough, the story doesn’t offer much beyond some banter, some sex, and then a whole lot of mush once they finally get together.

Camden and Xavier have been circling each other since college, always on opposite sides, always competing. Camden was a star baseball player, handsome and really smart and Xavier was a lacrosse player, but could never quite shake the feeling that he was always one step behind Camden, not to mention the taunting he got from the guy.

Now, years later, Xavier thinks he’s finally done with all that until he shows up at his new internship and finds Camden there too, still hot, still competitive and still getting under his skin.
They get stuck sharing a cabin during a work retreat, and at first, Xavier’s all defense and attitude, but then he finds out Camden used to like him and still does. That throws him a little bit and maybe it’s the cabin, the pressure for getting the job or just the way Camden's open about it all, but Xavier eventually stops fighting it and you'll get a few good sex scenes out of it.

The express relationship that followed felt a bit rushed. I get that they’ve known each other for a long time and liked each other for just as long, but the way the business offer was handled didn’t sit right with me. They suddenly had to prove to Damon that their relationship wouldn’t interfere with work and all that after just two days of hooking up. That kind of pressure felt unrealistic and unfair, especially since they were still figuring things out. It all moved too fast.

Then the story takes you to a decade later where they have an established work and private relationship and everything's perfect, so I definitely felt cheated out of the development of more intense, deeper feelings, especially from Xavier.

I'm probably going to re-read the #Fake Boyfriend series, I didn't like it the first time around, but Damon is such a big character in a lot of this author's book and I really like him, so I'm probably going to give it another shot.

Xavier and Camden have always been rivals, and now that they are out of college and interning for King Sports, that hasn't changed. With two coveted full-time positions on offer, Xavier will do anything to make sure he gets one. If nothing else, he just hopes Camden won't. But when another opportunity lands them sharing a room for the opportunity for one-on-one mentorship with Damon King, neither are backing down. And when the history of their rivalry is finally put to rest, Xavier and Camden realize they might have more in common than they thought. It seems like everything is falling into place, but will starting a workplace relationship ruin everything? Xavier isn't ready to commit if it means losing this job, but Camden isn't ready to let a possibility of /them/ slip through his fingers. Can they make it work?

Oh, this novella was super cute. I loved the tension and chemistry between Xavier and Camden, both before and after they are together. The challenges were great, and I loved that Lane, the pot stirer, and Damon, always in damage control. were perfectly themselves the whole time. It definitely makes me excited for the King Sports series! 5/5 🌟

Xavier and Camden have been rivals all throughout college. Their sports teams were rivals that pranked one another throughout the years and took every opportunity to one up the other. Xavier thought he would finally be free of Camden when they graduated. That is, until Camden showed up at his internship with King Sports. Now at their corporate retreat, they have a few days to impress the boss to land a full time position. But underneath the rivalry, there be a lot more feelings than Xavier wants to admit. Camden has always had feelings for Xavier, but didn’t realize that what he thought was always in fun was not what it appeared. But he wants to show Xavier that he deserves a chance. They could be friends and more if allowed. And he’ll do what he can to prove it. Enemies to lovers is always a fun trope and these two were another great example! I really liked both of these characters and their story. We had some great laughs and sweet moments too. It’s a perfect opening to this series and I can’t wait to read the next one!

This is an okay novella, but there is just not enough there for me to love it. I also like one of the guys a lot more than his partner. But Damon and Maddox cameo was worth it.

This is a cute quick story to get to learn a little about the beginning of King Sports. Xavier and Camden are the perfect match they are the second generation of Damon and Maddox. I look forward to reading more of them in the series.

After second read:
Once again, a fun little in-between story that moves too fast for my personal tastes. Still an enjoyable read and I always love more Damon though! With the release of King Sports #2 later this week, I thought a refresher was probably not a bad idea lol. I wasn't the biggest fan of The Back-Up plan, so I don't think I'll be rereading it completely, but maybe skimming it to familiarize myself with the characters again? I want the be ready for book two, because that story sounds quite promising :o

After first read:
I don't know how this happened, but during my Eden Finley marathon last year, I somehow missed this novella? Not to worry, this mistake has been fixed now :)

I definitely had fun with this, just a quick little story with some fun characters and Damon being delightful. The relationship itself was a little rushed for me personally, but then I am a slow burn girlie so I kind of expected to feel that way. The writing in general and the dialog specifically is solid, but just on the wrong side of cheesy for me at times. We get some declarations that just don't feel like an actual person said them, and definitely not the character(s) we got to know throughout the story.

Besides that, an enjoyable little story, that only makes me more excited about King Sports and the stories we'll get here.

Available only through Eden Finley's website or Patreon account is the prequel to her latest series, King Sports. Here's "Rival" (because it just came out, because I can't decide which Christmas book to read next, and because I reeaalllly need a break from thrillers).
["Interning at the ever-growing and reputable sports agency King Sports has been my dream job. This is what I want to do with my life. HA! When Lane told them to compromise, they both looked like shocked fish. What’s “compromise”?

These two are too much. There was so much sexual tension and mutual feelings of he’s-hot-but-brain-remember-you-hate-him and yin/yang awesomeness. This was the perfect start to the Kings Sports series (if only that series wasn’t still a year away).

Fun romance novella!
It features college "rivals" who end up in the same sports agency as intern, both coveting the limited full-time jobs, and who then find each other once more rivals in the corporate retreat teambuilding competition.

The way the two character, Camden and Xavier, view their college rivalry was very different. Apologies were made, of course, though I wish it had been handled a bit more seriously, as for one of them it certainly felt quite a lot like bullying... on the other hand, this is a lighthearted romance novella, and it all ended up fine, so I didn't mind too much.

The "teambuilding" competition also wasn't enirely a new concept from the author, as it reminded me of the borderline hazing stuff in Face Offs & Cheap Shots, but it felt a lot less malicious or dangerous this time, so it was fun.

I also, as usual, greatly enjoyed the cameos from familiar characters, as well as introduction of new ones that I hope will appear in the upcoming King Sports series!
Great introductory novella to a new series.

Rivals, forced proximity and the return of Damon King? Sign me up! In this novella, we meet aspiring sports agents Camden and Xavier. They didn't have the best college experience together, since Camden and his baseball team continuously tormented Xavier and his lacrosse team. Now, they're both interns vying for a coveted spot at King Sports, Damon King's (MC from Fake Out) own agency. They're invited to a corporate retreat for some skill building and competition that leads to some wonderful forced proximity.

🔥: Steamy! We only get a couple scenes since it's a novella, but they're full of heat. Plus, there's so much buildup from the sexual tension that's been brewing for years. Scenes are medium paced with graphic details.
😆: Lots of comic relief! Especially with the cameos from previous books. They're my favorite!!!
😭: No tears!

Loved this! I wish I could live in this universe. The world needs more Damon!

I'm such a sucker for the Fake Boyfriends series, so when I saw the prequel to King Sports on Eden Finley's website, I obviously had to have it. I love enemies to lovers, and this one was so cute. What I love most about Eden Finley and Saxon James is that their books are low angst and humorous. I love angst and drama, but some times you just need light, easy reads, and these two authors are my go-tos for that. I've only recently started reading their books (combined and solo works), but I've re-read most of them multiple times already. I can't wait to see where the rest of the King Sports series goes, and I'm looking forward to cameos by Damon, Maddox, and all the other Sadenverse guys, especially Brady and his SEALS!

Xavier Cassel, college lacrosse player, always wanted to be a sports agent, gay, interning at King Sports, wants to be hybrid agent-contracts/negotiation and PR, neurotic, insecure

dark hair
blue eyes

Camden Wheeler, college baseball star, chose not to go pro because of the pressure, interning at King Sports, cocky, arrogant, entitled

blonde hair
blue eyes

first person dual POV
Newport, CT
LA, CA

prequel, novella, rivals, coworkers, competing for an internship, bantering as foreplay, only one bed

Good. I see why it's a prequel novella. It's setting up the framework for the King Sports series. This only works because they had history from college. That way it wasn't insta-lovey. A lot of tell rather than show though.

Camden and Xavier

— college rivals turned workplace rivals
— workplace romance
— forced proximity
— one bed
— novella

This was a fun, quick, prequel novella. So many moments where I was laughing out loud (mainly any moment with Damon or Lane) Every scene with them was perfect. And seeing Maddox again 😍

Xavier and Camden definitely get together pretty quickly, but it is a novella. They still have banter and bicker about things once they’re together though.

Overall I enjoyed it, and it’s a great lead in to the King Sports series.

Ok I know that I just wrote a review literally yesterday about how it is tricky to start a series with a novella. Novellas are just so short, so it can be hard to get invested in brand new characters without giving them a full story. Buuut I take it all back.

I think it was easier with this one since they were set into a familiar universe. It also didn't hurt that we got to see so much of Damon and a little cameo of Maddox!

I am really excited for the Kings Sports universe to get going. I have been making my way through Sadenverse books, but it has been a minute since I had one about sports, so this feels like going back to the beginning.

I've read all of Eden Finley's books, and most are 5 star reads for me. This story didn't quite achieve that for a few reasons. On the plus side: Damon! Lane! PR nightmare trivia that described the plots of the first 3 Puckboys books! On the minus side, the pacing seemed a bit off to me. That may be due to the novella length as compared to a full book. Also, while I really liked Camden, I wasn't too crazy about Xavier, who came across as neurotic and less invested in their relationship. While I wished the story had been fleshed out further, I'm glad I purchased and read it as a lead-in to the King Sports series.

meh.

Enjoyable - probably because I just read this AFTER reading The Backup Plan, book 1 in the series where Rival is the prequel novella. A little too quick on the loathe-to-love for me but that’s hard to avoid in just 95 pages. I liked seeing how it lead into The Backup Plan with some details from that novel showing up though, and with how that book ended, I have a feeling we’ll definitely see Camden and Xavier again in book 2 in the series, whenever that will come!

This is a short prequel novel of a new series, with cameos from the fake boyfriends and puckboys series. It was fun, spicy and entertaining, but a bit too superficial. I understand that being a short novel, there is not always time to go in depth, but the change from ennemies to lovers was not completely believable.

Cute, quick, and fun Read. This one follows the start of the careers of Xavier and Camden. These two are rivals all the way through. However, they both want to do the same thing. Being a sports agent. During a retreat, they find that their college rivalry was them ignoring how they actually felt. Soon enough, they found that they were the perfect team together. Now happily inseparable.
