A new sapphic mafia romance from the author of the Crossing Lines trilogy...
MIA
I can’t believe my parents have agreed to marry me off in order to have their debt to the Morettis paid by the Falcone family. Tying the knot with Alessandra Falcone seems to be the only way—but I can’t do that, can I? This is not the marriage I’ve dreamed of since I was a little girl.
This marriage is all but convenient for me because it comes with strings attached. There’s nothing romantic about it, and the fact that I've met Alessandra before makes it all worse. Because I am attracted to her.
ALESSANDRA
I wish things were different, but I have a responsibility to my family. This includes keeping my siblings in line, and the company going. It means I must go along with my grandfather’s ridiculous idea. The Leonards’ predicament is just convenient. Mia…
She’s dangerous, because every time I’m with her, it’s harder to pretend this is just business. I can’t be distracted, much as I’m tempted. Lives are on the line, and sometime soon, it could be hers…

First off I want to be clear that I enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend reading it, if you like any of the tropes of fake marriage, instant love (sort of), mafia romance, and ice queens. … and I absolutely plan on reading book two.
There were moments of brilliance when I got excited and was really engaged, and then there were moments that felt like missed opportunity. The scheming needed to be a bit more gritty and nefarious for my taste, and I just never fell in love with either of the FMCs. Hence my somewhat conflicted rating. Regardless though, read it. You will enjoy it.
Mia’s parents have arranged for her to marry Alessandra to have their debts paid, but Mia is less than happy with the arrangement. Alessandra understands her part to play in this arrangement, and her place within her family, but with a past meeting already setting the scene between her and Mia, she’s not sure she wants to fall for her the way she is.
This was such a dramatic story! It had the dark edginess I have come to recognise as a style Barbara does expertly when delivering stories like this one. It has multiple layers, depth, and there is always more going on than the plot leads you to believe at first. Both Mia and Alessandra were strong, determined, and focused, and while they were going through the motions of what their families had arranged, they were not backing down or ignoring their own goals and agendas. This played so well into the tension instantly between them and surfacing at every opportunity until they really worked out what one another wanted.
When they started working together in this, they were a formidable team and it brought unexpected surprises and twists in the story I couldn’t have imagined when they were first introduced. There was all that family politics that feeds a mafia themed romance, and I thought both of them handled the situation eloquently, and with that business savvy expected from women growing up in their families and surroundings.
Very excited to know what the future holds for these two, and hoping for more to their story in the future!
I read the synopsis and my imagination had run away from me before I even started. It never stood a chance living up to those expectations. Give me angst, give me danger, give me real slowburn drama. Oh, how I wish. Mia never stopped reading like a teenager and the mob was very high-school.
It begins with what’s to be a fake marriage, add in some mutual attraction, some intrigue and mafia mayhem, and a family that doesn’t follow the code of honour among thieves. It’s a surefire recipe for ‘who’s behind the foreboding disquiet’. Well-written and makes you want to know who and why.
This was so good , it kept me reading til I finished it couldn't't put it down. Mia's parents are going to marry her off to Alessandra to pay there debts. But there always trouble. I loved these characters the moment there eyes locked on each other at the beginning. I thought this was a thilling and romantic read not knowing what was going to happen next and very interesting. They have to work together and trust to get this marriage done. But can they find love too and make this marriage work? Well written 5 stars for me
I decided to test the waters of the infamous arranged marriage mafia romance (made readable by the gay agenda). It's... ehhh, not my thing. The premise was really silly. Mia meets Alessandra when she's barhopping for one of her cousin's birthdays. Well, "meets." They look at each other across the room, Mia chickens out, and then accidentally spills wine on Alessandra's white dress. Alessandra gets pissed and leaves the bar.
They don't even learn each other's names. Yet somehow, this brief encounter is so unique and unforgettable to them that it's referred to as "the one (hookup) that got away" a laughable number of times. Like, come on, you could've spent three pages making that encounter...literally anything. Show off a different side to Alessandra that Mia could have clung to, wondering if it had just been an act to get her into bed or something. Or show how the two had a spark when not under the pressure of their current circumstances. I found the constant "wow, so hot, I would love to have sex with her" to be tiring. Sexual attraction seemed to be the only thing that glued these characters together.
Then, Mia is sold to OneDirection forced to enter an arranged marriage with the daughter of another mafia family, who turns out to be... gasp Alessandra (The woman from the bar?!?! What?!?!). All this to save her family business, of course (mafia debt, implications of illegal dealings that could land her parents in prison).
From that point forward, the book takes us through the weeks leading up to the wedding. We get a villain who isn't very villainous because we don't get to know him. He's flatter than good old Plank. His motive is... I don't even know, honestly.
We get a dark past for Alessandra, questionable choices from Mia the Bratty Overgrown Teenager, mild smut, instant love, and some pointless misunderstandings sprinkled in for fun. Naturally, there was an oopsie on the wedding day, and I was face-palming at how the problem was solved—or at how a certain character wore the densest, thickest plot armor I've ever seen. The whole villain subplot just kind of fizzled out in the end.
Generally, I felt like I was reading a summary. Things were happening, but there was no soul or tension behind anything. I didn't care about these characters, and I didn't care about the twist at the end. After the wedding, I was just wishing for the story to finally end.
I couldn't help but feel like 30-40 more pages would've done wonders for this story. It's the written form of an underbaked cake. It's cliché and silly, but if the author had let it cook a while longer, it would've turned out much more palatable. Also, maybe a crumb of realism, possibly?
Other grievances I had were the weird comments about the age gap—just atrocious vibes. Also, if Alessandra could shut up about fucking models for five seconds, that'd be great.
I found it odd for Mia to say that she was "done with dating men altogether," only to later say that she had imagined herself getting married to a woman at 12 years old. It seemed more like a continuity error than a deliberate inclusion of comp het in the story. Then, one moment Alessandra says she has never loved her ex, the next that she did love her, and later that, no, she didn't love her. There were also some typos ("...we are keep an eye on the people...").
Forced into an arranged marriage to settle her parents' debt, Mia is horrified at the prospect of marrying Alessandra Falcone. This is not the marriage she dreamed of as a little girl. It’s a convenient arrangement and the fact that she's already met Alessandra only makes it worse—because she's attracted to her.
Bound by duty to her family, Alessandra must keep her siblings in line and the family business afloat, even if it means going along with her grandfather's plan to marry Mia. The Leonard's debt is just a convenient excuse. But Mia is dangerous—every moment with her makes it harder to pretend this is just business. Alessandra can’t afford to be distracted, even though she’s tempted. Lives are on the line, and one day, it could be Mia's.
What makes the characters in this sapphic Mafia book different from the others is their family dynamics. Regardless of an arranged marriage being the main plot, they want to ensure that everybody is kept safe. Alessandra is involved in the harsh world of the Mafia, yet she's classy, a businesswoman, and an artist.
In other Mafia books, the Mafia boss stands out as possessive and dominant but in this book, Alessandra has a big heart and has good intentions towards Mia. Yes, she's protective to ensure her safety, but once she gains her trust, she allows her to function as her partner rather than a contract wife.
Mia is at first naive about how the Mafia world works, but she's not ignorant and understands how to navigate it and defend herself.
This is an age-gap story and the steaminess is sexy and passionate rather than submissive and dominant.
The book is less than 200 pages yet it doesn't feel rushed and the plot has a well-written flow. This is Book 1 of 2. The author has written several sapphic Mafia books and other sapphic thrillers.
Barbara Winkes Promised to the Queen (Connected Book 1)
Mia's world is turned upside down when her parents arrange a marriage for her with a complete stranger in order to pay off their debts. Desperate to protect her family, Alessandra agrees to a marriage she has no interest in. Mia and Alessandra meet by chance at a club, feeling an instant connection, but their paths cross again under unfortunate circumstances. As I read this book, I couldn't help but question the value of family and loyalty. Is it worth sacrificing your freedom and happiness for? The story is filled with action and suspense, as the two women navigate the wars between their families. Despite the obstacles, their chemistry is undeniable, and it seems they were destined to be in love long before the arranged marriage. Mia is determined to find her happily ever after, and I was captivated by the book's intrigue. I look forward to reading more from this author and discovering how everything will come together. If you're seeking a compelling mafia sapphic story, I highly recommend checking out this book, available on Kindle Unlimited.
Alessandra Falcone is the head of her family and their business. She finally agrees to her siblings request that she marry so the three will inherit the $500 million dollars their grandfather left if they all are married. Mia Leonard is shocked when her parents tell her she must marry Alessandra to save them and the family business from a vicious crime boss. Not happy about losing her dream of a marriage based on love she’s surprised to meet a woman she had ogled in a gay bar. Will this lead to an unhappy marriage or is she there a future for them? A steamy sapphic romance. Great author.
I adore Barbara's mafia romance novels. The twists and turns in the plot keep me fully engaged and on the edge of my seat, making it impossible to put the book down until I finish it. I was hooked from the very first page and couldn't wait to see what would happen next. However, I felt a few parts of the book were rushed. Nevertheless, the story is very good, the ending was interesting and left the door open for an intriguing follow-up.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! From a captivating prologue to an unexpected ending - what a great journey in between! Mia and Alessandra's story includes everything - fabulous characters, excitement, suspense, intrigue, laughter, spicy steaminess, that lesbian-wedding feeling, sweaty palms, fear, and power - pure female kick-ass power. Barbara Winkes delivers in that way that she does - a story with intelligent layers that will easily keep you up until you finish it! Then it will leave you missing your friends, new and old, when you put the book down - vowing to read it again. Right away!
I loved the MC's in this book. So real and engaging. There is a ton of angst that they both weather gracefully and so delightfully! The mafia background made it all very dramatic and enticing. Mia is already attracted to Alessandra and so when they get engaged and then married you know there is a complicated future in the offing. Couldn't really put this one down until I was finished. I would recommend it for a good time with a good heart. I received an ARC.
This book had it all. Drama, love, mafia brides and family drama. Mia and Alessandra were great characters and the story was very interesting, leaving me wanting to read more. An arranged marriage, with an ice queen, age gap were all included mixed together with some humour and fantastic writing. Without giving spoilers, the epilogue was unexpected and I’m hoping we get more of this persons story in the next book. They are conveniently single after all.
Honestly I can’t tell if I enjoyed this book are not but I can say I did lose sleep over it cause for the most part it kept me intrigued enough.
The mafia aspect of the book was giving pg-13 tbh (that’s not really what I look for in a mafia romance). This book would def work for those who want to read mafia romance but don't want all the 'horror' aspects of it.
honestly I would be reading that second book but not anytime soon
An enjoyable read that had some mystery to it! Mia and Alessandra make the perfect couple. It was awesome to feel the sparks they gave off each other in their scenes within the story. I never would’ve guessed Alessandra has a huge heart but boy does she. Their happily is an enjoyable ending. That epilogue though, more mystery abounds! Onto the next in this series.

3 stars. I feel like the page length was a hinderance. It's too short and I never got attached to either of the main characters unfortunately. The romance between them was good and the plot was interesting for the most part but overall there were definitely moments of this that I found to be really dry. Wasn't bad at all but I was hoping for more. I'll continue on with this series though.
The plot of this book was similar to Persephone Black's book Her Mafia Bride, but it was written a lot worse in my opinion. It wasn't bad necessarily. It also wasn't the best, though. It felt very underdeveloped. There could have been a lot more plot and character development. This was my first book by Winkes and I felt like I was missing background information despite this being the first book in this series, which made the plot hard to follow sometimes.
What would you do for your family? Mia is placed into a difficult situation to help save her family business. Alessandra isn’t sure about her bride to be, but she quickly finds out she may be in for a big surprise. Grab this one if you want to be swept into a mafia family and find out how things really work, behind closed doors. Good characters, interesting story and an easy read.
Barbara has a way with writing books on connected families. I love these types of books. Alessandra is the head of her family's holdings. Mia's family needs some help after borrowing money from a low life. There are secrets being kept. Mia wants to be independent. This is a well developed story. It will keep you entertained. Highly recommend.
Starts off pretty slow just introducing the problem the main characters are facing but I did find it sometimes difficult to follow along with the perspectives and the constantly switching narrative style. One being for Mia and the other for Alessandra. Otherwise I thought it was well done and very much a mystery with some tensions and intrigue thrown in there.
Love this type of Sapphic stories. Mafia Queen, forced marriage, sorta Ice Queen. After reading all of Persephone Black's Mafia Queen books, this one was a poor (very poor) cousin. The idea was good, that's what convinced me to get the book in the first place. But the execution was poor, sloppy and I never really cared for either MC. Sorry, not for me.
I love the building up of things within this story: the characters, the nitty gritty as well as the $ and glamour, the incredible plot. It is an awesome story, please, give it a try.
Captivating, angs, rollercoaster slow burn. The book would have been more amazing, if there were 🔥 steamy scenes between the FMC's. That was disappointing, especially for the type of mafia book it was. A 4,5 🌟 due to no intimate steamy intell of our ladies.
I love a good sapphic mafia book. This one was really good. I enjoyed the enemies to lovers vibe, the angst, the mystery and the ultimately happy ending. I look forward to reading more books in the series!
Wonderful escape from the current reality. Barbara always creates such dynamic characters and interesting backgrounds. Mafia, powerful families, and the bad guys always lose. Didn’t put it down until I had finished.
For such a short book, the storyline was absolutely fascinating. So much happens in the short span of time this books covers. But the ending though!!!!!!! Oh my gosh! Read this book if you want an action packed, sapphic, mafia romance book.
Very good exposition and writing in general. I like how the intimate parts aren't ruined by using crass language. Very good read, kept me on my toes right up to the end.
