Reva has lived her entire life in secret, hiding in plain sight from a world that would rather see her dead. She has learned how to control her powers enough to escape life unnoticed.
But everything changes when knights of a neighboring country arrive at her doorstep searching for her guardian to help care for the Royal Family’s youngest prince and his mysterious illness. She sends Reva in her place with an ominous message and her control is tested when she has to live and work under the rule of a kingdom that hasn’t employed her kind in hundreds of years.
While Reva tries to help the young prince battle this illness, she realizes she didn’t leave as much of her life behind as she thought. The Abyss forming in the mountains that separate her country from others has reached beyond her home. Something dark, old, and sinister is brewing, and it’s fallen to Reva and her new friends to figure out who and why.
Through an unanticipated friendship with a princess and knight of the kingdom she now serves, Reva struggles to find not only her place in this world but who she really is.
With Fate rearing its ugly eye around every corner, Reva learns she may play a bigger role than she could ever have imagined.

3.75 ⭐️ For being this author’s debut novel, it was pretty good!! The story was quick paced, with simple/easy to understand minimal world building and interesting right from the prologue, that hooked me right in and I was super invested in where it was going.
I do wish some concepts (like the houses, backstory of Sirians) was explained a little earlier on than 50%-60% because when those would come up, I would be a little confused about the context they were mentioned in.
And Fin…I wanted to square up with Fin. I don’t see him as the best love interest for Reva. He just wouldn’t defend her or stand up for her. And by the end of the book, he just kept making snide comments about her abilities. LIKE SIR, COME ON NOW.
Overall, I did enjoy the story and I will want to be reading the next in the series because I need to know what happens next!
I have absolutely no words to express my love for that book.
The story follows Reva, who has to hide her true identity to the world, because she would otherwise be dead. She is recruited by a knight as a healer in place of her guardian to help tend to the young prince of the kingdom who is gravelly ill. Reva befriends the knight who has come to get her from her home, as well as the princess. Together, they have to discover truths about various forbidden subjects.
First of all, I have been hooked from the end of the prologue. The story is absolutely captivating and magical. Also, I think it is fairly easy to understand everything even though there's world building and talks of magic and gods.
Secondly, I LOVE Reva. She is a strong FMC and I find her so reliable in her emotions. It's been a while since I was able to identify and connect to an FMC (to some extent, I bear no magic lol) and that made me like the book so much more! I love the friendships she developed and I felt all of her emotions.
Lastly, I think the book was so well written, that makes my heart happy!
The book ends with a little cliffhanger... and I CAN'T wait for the second book!
Honestly, I would 100% recommend this book to anyone who love a fantasy story, with good banter, beautiful friendships and a little bit of romance, but nothing that overtakes the plot. I am definitely going to buy a physical copy to add to my shelves.
Congratulations K.M. Davidson for writing such a good book
Thank you so much to the author for an ARC of this book!
4.5 ⭐️
From start to finish this book had me enthralled. The prologue peaked my curiosity instantly and the ending definitely had me wishing I could set it down and pick up book 2 immediately.
So many of the characters we follow are so loveable, from the sassy FMC and the sweetheart MMC to all the side characters. I cannot wait to learn more about all of them, ESPECIALLY the final chapter appearance.
I loved seeing all the details come together, definitely a series to add to your TBR!
This book is a hard one to rate because I can tell the story is good and the magic system and whatever is to come with Reva and the Sirians is going to be extraordinary.
However.
I can’t stand Reva, she reminds me of that one guy who’s always bragging about the chicks he’s banged. This girl kept mentioning that she’s slept with countless men and it gave me a massive ick. Fin is annoying and also a coward. I didn’t see the chemistry between them, I don’t think Reva did either to be honest.
I loved Clint and Elly but the names are weird as hell. Clint, Eleanor, and TARIQ? Really? For a basically white blonde man? As someone who grew up in the Middle East, I knew some Tariqs and none of them fit that description, with siblings who had American names like CLINT.
I didn’t like the king either, he gave me weak little man energy. Everyone was quirky and nice for no reason. The word “chuckle” was written 59 times in the book, and it made me angry every time I read it after the first dozen times.
The ending was also anticlimactic, I thought something was going to happen.
The story moved slowly, which is fine for me because it’s a long series and it really laid down the foundation well, it was necessary. If we completely changed the main characters, took out the romance, and eliminated the word chuckle, I’d probably love this book.
Since November I’ve been dreaming of the day I would get to read Darkness Comes Again, it did not disappoint.
Order this bad boy!! When it arrives at your door you can spend hours falling in love with these incredible characters and world. At times this book made me feel so cozy and at times I was gripping my kindle with anxiety. With the way Davidson writes it’s easy to picture yourself in the room with Reva and Clint or studying in the library with Ella.
I can’t wait for the next part to this story. I know I’ll be thinking about theories until the next book is released!
This was fun, engaging, fast, and easy to read. An interesting premise that I would love to continue exploring in the next book!
I did have some issues with the dialogue in comparison to the atmosphere the author was trying to build. There were some instances where some of the choices the author made took me out of the story and wasn’t as immersive. I would still recommend this book as a light palate cleanser read where you just wanna have some fun and vibe in a fantasy world.
This book was 🔥🔥🔥! I loved the character development, the tension between Reva and a certain knight 😉, the building friendships/found family, and every single part of the world building. There were a lot of details sprinkled throughout the chapters, just how I love my fantasy books. And the ending! An intense interaction mixed with a cliffy? Yes, please! KM knows how to write, and I can’t wait for Book 2!! 🙌🏻🖤🫶🏻
Getting to read Katie’s first book of The Sirian series was such a joy. It was the perfect setup for what I expect to be a pretty epic fantasy!
As we turn the first pages of DCA, we find ourselves in a world of humans, Magics (a suppressed people), and supposedly extinct Sirians. We follow the first person POV of Reva, a Sirian who has been hidden for her first twenty two years, as she embarks on her first journey: to be the new Royal Healer. In this new country that is trying to bring equality to Magics, Reva hopes to not only heal the sick prince but find answers to her forbidden and foggy background. It is here that she makes friends and enemies while cultivating new and never before seen powers alongside a budding romance.
Reva is a strong and compassionate FMC. She is open, kind, and sassy. Her crew is equally so and I just love this blossoming found family.
This first in the series is pretty low stakes as it sets the stage for a coming darkness and it just drew me in, creating a delightful foundation with an ending that has me diving immediately into book two to meet this new MMC!!!
Tropes you may find in DCA are forced proximity, hidden powers, unique magics, cinnamon roll MMC, slow burn to low spice, friends to lovers, and a reluctant hero.
Thank you Katie for sending me an ARC copy of Darkness Comes Again
There were so many things about this story I really enjoyed. The settings were always so descriptive I had such an easy time being immersed in this world which made me forget I was even reading. Then diving into the magic system, it was so unique and was brought into the storyline in the perfect trickle instead of one huge info dump, which I and I’m sure many other readers can appreciate.
Going into the characters starting with Reva, I love how there is a bit of mystery behind her that you slowly get more answers to as she learns more about herself but there is still plenty to unravel as the series continues. I also liked that the side characters had a good balance of being seen as the side characters but also still given personality and character development.
The ending made me need to know more about Tariq immediately. Hear me out Fin is sweet but seems slightly naive. Where in the few details that are given about Tariq, then how he carries himself in the short interaction at the very end, you can’t blame a girl for instantly falling for the strong authoritative character.
This was my first indie-published read. A solid 4/5 stars for me.
My thoughts: ~The map was a little hard to read due to the font of the text, but as I read the story, it made more sense and I was able to follow along with the world.
~I also felt like the chapters seemed really long and could’ve been split up at times. Sometimes I felt like the plot dragged because the chapters were so long, that I kind of lost interest.
~The MC was sassy and strong right from the beginning and didn’t change. I also liked how she challenged people, rather than just accepting their behaviour or explanations for certain things.
~I wish there had been more info or details about the “Magics”. At first I thought they were just people with magic, like all witches or sorcerers, but then characters emerged with scales & animal traits, so I was a little confused as to what truly classifies one as a “Magic”. It is explained a little further into the story, I still think I need more information.
~Now I know this is a Fantasy-Romance, but I unfortunately felt like the ‘romance’ aspect moved a little too quickly. I would’ve enjoyed more tension or flirtatious interactions between the MC and the love interest, maybe see them as friends first before anything major happened. I felt like it was a little too instantaneous, and honestly, it kind of ruined the story for me (I am not a huge fan of romance in general, so take that into consideration too).
~I loved the MC’s interactions with Clint, the youngest brother of the royal family. He’s written really well and added flavour to the story. I felt like some of the other characters’ personalities lacked.
~I enjoyed how the MC used real things, like herbs and potions, to help Clint’s illness, rather than just ‘using her magic’ to make it all better. I enjoyed the realistic aspect of that, as well as the frustrating part of the illness ‘not being cured’.
~The history within this book is crazy and insanely well thought out. The author has created this world so well, with all the background and information on past royals, the magic system and how certain powers are formed. It also always made sense and didn’t seem like it was thrown in there just because.
~I wish there had been more action, or more of a mysterious impending doom. I needed something more to get my heart racing.
Also, thank you to the author for sending me the special bonus chapter because I preordered this book. I enjoyed it and I hope to read more from Fin’s perspective in the next books.
I want to start this review by giving a HUGE thank you to the author for granting me a physical copy of this ARC! This is my first physical ARC, and my heart exploded when it came in the mail. 🤍
I have been a little inactive as of late dealing with the utter awfulness that is morning sickness. As a result, reading went to the back burner in a big way. THIS BOOK CHANGED THAT. I was hooked from the prologue, and it kept my attention throughout the entirety of the book!
This is an absolutely stunning adult romantasy with world building that isn’t overly complex, lovable and relatable characters, and a little bit of spiceeee! I really enjoyed getting to unwind the mystery of the main character and getting to understand her and her relationships better. I am also incredibly stoked to see how these relationships develop further in book two 🙊
I feel like I come to expect these insane cliffhangers with romantasy novels that this ending fell a little flat for me, but this is in no way a dig at the book! Just personal preference. 🥰
Never have I ever thought I would love a fantasy with Romance as a second plot this much, but I did!! The writing style of the author was too smart. The intriguing mystery starts from the prologue itself, it just keeps getting better, the more you read, the more you want to keep reading, also I read the prologue after finishing the book and it made so much sense😭 I was so stunned with how the story turned out, but let me tell you there's so much more coming wow, my mind is whirling with so many possible theories..
Reva, oh Reva I love her, the author made her too realistic she had so many anxious and self doubting moments but she never let that define her, I absolutely adore strong FMCs more than anything in the books, that's one of the reasons I enjoyed the book alot, My boy Clint, I absolutely love and adore him to death. He deserves so many great things in his life and hopefully he will get it all. The side characters? They are EVERYTHING , I want to write about all the characters lol, but then it would just be spoilers😭 but everyone in the book is so I don't know what word to use but Intriguing? Essential? Brave? Smart? Strong? You name it!
Thou I am not so sure about the love interest, He is charming, nice, friendly but idk there's just something, but I sure am alot intrigued about certain someone and shipping him with Reva already lol.. I don't wanna say anymore because I am overexcited and will start with the spoilers now, but let me tell you as someone who doesn't enjoy Fantasy that much, I LOVED THIS ONE!!!
I finished this book in less than a day! I could NOT STOP thinking about it when I wasn’t reading it Reva and Fin consumed my entire day. I loved the relationship between these two, it’s epic and slow burn and gosh darn so beautiful!
I loved the pacing of this book and the fact that Reva has healing magic itches a scratch that I didn’t know I had, I just want another 20 chapters of Reva healing people and kicking butt
Do you love:
Found family Friends to lovers Slow burn 🔥 Magic Hidden talent FMC learning to control her powers Swoon-worthy love interest Epic quest
I’m so excited for the next book, but I wish it was out sooner ( I think November 2025!)
The ending blew me away! I have to know what happens next, why did Reva react that way! I have a lot of feelings about it!
The world building and magic system of this book was unique and interesting. This book is more of a character driven one, where the FMC Reva is really smart and considerate character. She goes to another kingdom in place of someone to treat the prince. Her interaction with prince Clint was wonderful. The start of this book reminded me of Shadow and Bone where there is a dark patch caused by magic gone bad but it turns out to be a completely different storyline. It felt a bit more prequel to an amazing series. It is definitely slow paced with intricate details and descriptions of the world and magical beings like Sirians who are in hiding. They can be known from their mark on the forehead. I would recommend this book to young adult or a perfect starting to fantasy books.
When you read as much as I do it’s hard not to find similarities in books, but every once in a while you come across one and BAM! it’s something so unique and engaging you don’t want to put it down. That was me with Darkness Comes Again by @kmdavidsonbooks
Narrowing down my favorite parts of this book would be hard… but I’ll try. The main character is not your typical skilled warrior or damsel. She is strong and determined but still needs to learn her way around her power. She has great friends that break the mold on what she’d been taught to believe she’d find in this world she’s been thrust into. The relationships built in this book is definitely one of my favorite parts.
BLURB: “Reva has spent her entire life hidden from the world, until Fate brings knights from another kingdom to her doorstep, begging for her mentors help in saving their young prince. When Reva goes instead, she starts to find her purpose, her heritage, her future, and her found family.”
It releases April 15th, with kindle and signed preorders going on now!
A strong, relatable FMC, forbidden magic, a slow-burn friends to lovers, secrets, hidden powers, and more!
Let me start by calling out how beautifully written this story is. I seriously imagined it playing out in my head like a movie. The world building was easy to follow and laid out so naturally.
I found myself falling in love with every single one of these characters. You want to root for each one. My personal favorite has got to be Clint 🥹. You’ll need to read it to find out why! I’m excited to see these characters grow even more, and am VERY excited to learn more about the last character we’re introduced to 👀.
And finally the sweet and wholesome blossoming romance 🥹. I’m obsessed with Fin.
Reva has lived her entire life in secret, hiding who and what she really is from everyone around her.
Knights from a neighboring country come to her doorstep and change everything.
Reva has to follow these knights to their kingdom and help heal the young prince while making new friends & learning who to trust. They begin to discover hidden knowledge and secrets that takes them down a path of trust and danger.
Princess Elly has a total Hermoine granger vibe and I absolutely loved her character! Clint is seriously the best and Reva better save him or my heart will be destroyed. Reva’s growth and learning how and who to trust had me STRESSED haha & Fin was such a sweetheart, he kind of messed up here and there BUT when that ending happened, when the older Prince showed up, I was like 😳😳
This was such a fun read and I genuinely loved the vibes and story! Can’t wait for what comes next!!
the writing is definitely not the best (very ya..), but i love the characters and the plot is fun and interesting. the ending…. davidson is sooo dramaaaaa for that.. fin is cute but he don’t stand up for rev sooooooo.. read fast bc (of it not being written weellll errrmmmm.. i mean the flow is a little odd and more tell…) easy to read.. i think some inconsistencies w the characters and their personalities (does that make senseeee
If you like fictional fantasy & magic then I recommend this book. I quite enjoyed it, I loved the world building & magic system. I just didn’t like how Reva’s kind was marked as a “death sentence” because supposedly their powers were more “powerful” but hey there wouldn’t be a story if it was all peachy and great haha Reva by the way is one of my fave main characters she’s strong, sassy, & resilient. Clint is also another of my fave and I’m really hoping he pulls through!! The only thing I did not like was that cliffhanger now I have to wait until BOOK TWO to see what happens NEXTTT!!! I literally finished it as soon as I got the email with the arc I had to know what happens to my girl Reva and my boy Clint lol
Don’t miss the debut novel from K.M. Davidson. I devoured this book from start to finish and cannot wait for the next one in the series. It’s easily one of the best books I’ve read in years.
It maintained a beautiful balance between character conversations, descriptive scene setting and establishing this new world. I felt immersed in it from the first chapter without feeling overwhelmed and I cannot pick a favorite character, I’m obsessed with them all!
Every character had a well thought out storyline and development that made you sympathize with even the most aggravating one.
If you like strong characters and a plot that lures you in, this is a must read. Really, don’t miss out!
Although a part of me wanted more from the story and felt like a lot was left unanswered. Some parts felt rushed in a way, for this to be a series more time could’ve been taken to explore them. Waiting for the second book to get the answers I need.
WOW! Darkness Comes Again is the perfect gateway to K.M Davison's debut series. This is one of those "I need the next book immediately" stories. I cannot wait to see the character art for every character. Each one is so diverse and well planned out. Clint is such a sweetheart, he really stole the second half of the story for me. Reva is going through some pretty rough orphan trauma, but it's all for the growth and character development. Her anxiety is refreshing to see in a FMC. This story has it all from royal politics, unknown fate, lil romance, forbidden magic and bad ass side characters.
I really enjoyed this book! I love Reva as the FMC. Her backstory, hidden powers, and upbringing were all interesting and kept me engaged.
I wish I’d gotten a bit more with the found family built around Karasi. That being said, once Reva traveled to Mariande, I absolutely loved the found family that developed there. I was impatiently waiting for things to develop between Reva and Fin, but by the end of the book I was glad things had been paced the way they were between those two. There are aspects of Fin that turned out to be wholly disappointing when it came to standing up for the woman he was infatuated with. The relationship between Reva and Clint is so heartwarming, and I really like Elly.
I do feel like some things that should’ve been more treacherous were somewhat too easy and smoothed over, but I believe this book is a good foundation for the series to be built on.
Overall, I loved the writing quality, the character development, the world building, and the magic system, especially when it came to the mystery of the Sirians. I’m all in for book 2!
Looking for a NA fantasy/romantasy with forbidden magic, found family, banter, royal intrigue, and more? Look no further. Darkness Comes Again is the first book in a fantastic up and coming series with a truly wonderful cast of characters and a plot that is teeming with mystery and dark intrigue. It is a moody atmospheric read and is the first step for what is shaping up to be a long and epic journey.
I really enjoyed how descriptive and stimulating it is. The magic systems are gradually introduced and expounded upon as the story progresses… it gives you just the right amount of information that allows you to get a good grasp on everything but also piques the curiosity because there’s so much to unravel.
The characters are made up of a diverse group who each have a distinct voice and purpose. Reva, our FMC, has been hidden away her whole life due to the forbidden magic that she was born with. Raised in the art of medicine and healing by her guardian, she gets summoned away to a neighboring kingdom to help their young dying prince. There her mettle is tested by not only the impossible disease she’s meant to cure but also the prejudices of people who fear magic. Her journey is one of heartache but also self discovery and determination. Along the way she meets Sir Finley, a kind and honorable knight who accepts her for who she is and begins to care for her as more than a friend and the tension between them is palpable. And then we meet Elly, a princess with a thirst for knowledge who has no desire for the throne. And one can’t forget dearest Clint, Reva’s charge, the young sickly prince with a heart of gold and a will of steel who is fighting his illness and just wants to be a normal kid. His story really tugs at the heartstrings. The character dynamics as a whole bring a strong sense of found family to the story that I found really enjoyable.
And as we learn about Reva, her powers, and the mysterious Sirians and their magic, the plot unfolds in the background as discoveries come to light about the forgotten race + impending darkness and what that means for Reva and her friends.
Which ultimately makes the first book feel more like a sampler. There’s still so much to delve into and a few characters who arrive late to the game. The foreshadowing is definitely there if you’re paying attention and could be easy to miss if you’re not. Personally I feel like this will require another read through because I’m curious to see what I missed and I feel like I’ll have a firmer grasp on the story after having finished it.
Because like I said at the beginning, book one is definitely a setup for an epic journey and the questions abound. The buildup is totally wrapped up in intrigue, it honestly feels like a great introduction for what’s to come in the series and I can’t wait to see what unfolds in book 2 and beyond!
Thank you so much to K.M. Davidson for the ARC opportunity! It’s been a joy to be small part of this debut.
⟡ 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: 4.5/5 ⟡ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞: 1.5-2/5 ⟡ 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬: elemental magic, forbidden magic, reluctant hero with anxiety, friends to lovers, medieval fantasy vibe, royal intrigue, cinnamon roll knight, a young prince with a chronic illness, strong female friendship, found family, rising darkness threatening to take hold, mental health rep, open door spice, cliffhanger ending ⟡ 𝐂𝐖: violence, verbal abuse, bullying
This book brought my love for fantasy back to life. It’s so well paced and a good mix of description vs dialogue. I could not put this book down as a beta reader, I devoured it as quickly as possible as cannot wait for book 2. The easily to relate too characters, and vibrant storyline will leave you wanting more as soon as you turn each page.
I think the premises of the story is good and interesting, I'm definitely curious to see where the story goes. The writing style flows easily and it could definitely be considered a fast read...but that could also be because of the dialogue? Which I've found to be a bit too much. Too much talking, which subtly morphed into repetition in my opinion. Unfortunately I didn't find the dialogue to be...well organized. I found it a bit immature here and there, and I was confused about certain verbiage, it sounded a bit too modern for a fantasy book, which sometimes can work, but most of the times it just doesn't fit right (my opinion). Also, the main female character had to repeat herself by saying the same thing over and over again a few times. I think the dialogue took a bit away from the plot, as I didn't really feel the essence of it that well. There is plot, don't get me wrong, but I feel like it was overpowered by the dialogue.
The characters were alright. I didn't feel a strong connection, but I didn't disliked them either. I like the fact that yes, there was conversation between characters, but there wasn't any frustrating misscomunication, so that was good. I didn't see any fun and witty banter to add to some of the characters personality, but I'll wait, the series has just started. 😅 The conversations between them just flowed normally, so that's why I probably didn't feel any "sparks". As for someone hating on "magics", I think Pax character was well done. I could definitely feel his reactions and his hatred for the magics pour out of him. Reva was friendly and ready to do whatever it takes for the job that she got employed for. However, I didn't like the character growth as much, because for someone who's been hiding a secret, she was way too quick and easy to trust someone she's only known for a short amount of time (Fin in this case). Especially after she's been told by her foster mother to be careful. Fin....sounded fun at first, nice guy, but then you discover that altough he is a nice guy, he's not courageous. I've found his character to be spineless and weak, not standing up for what is right. I didn't feel his attraction to Reva, and found the training scene unnecessary, especially since she did not reciprocate the same feelings towards him. Also the fact that the King was so informal in private, and that Reva didn't held back complaining about the abusive, rude knights, threw me off a bit. I just didn't expect a conversation with the King to go that way....😅 (maybe that's just me).
Like I said, I think the story is interesting. I would like to know more about the Sirians, but I must admit that towards the end there was a bit of overload of information and I had to focus for a minute to grasp what was going on. I will probably continue reading the series, because I like to show my support to the indie author, and I'm curious to see where the story goes.
