Based on the hit streaming series, “Young David” offers early readers five new chapter books, each exploring a different trial and triumph from the young shepherd boy’s days in the wild. King David was known as a man after God’s own heart, and as a boy, he’s no different. Through this stunning and Biblically faithful book series, kids get to grow up with David as he finds his calling as a warrior, a shepherd, a poet, a king, and ultimately as a worshipper.

In Book 4: King, David finds a lost sheep afraid of the world. As it turns out, the sheep belongs to a cruel shepherd who works for King Saul. The shepherd arrives to retrieve his lost sheep and gets ready to teach it a lesson with the end of his staff. David stands in the gap to protect the animal and offers the shepherd a trade: the boy’s lyre for the sheep. The shepherd takes the deal, David surrenders his prized instrument, and the lost sheep is brought into the boy’s fold where it will be loved and cared for from now on. Little sister Zeruiah reminds David that since his new sheep was the king’s sheep, that makes David a sort of king. Not to mention, David acted like a king when he stood up to the cruel shepherd.

Each book in the series is generously supplied with some truly incredible black-and-white illustrations. Both kids and adult readers will enjoy seeing David come to life as he leaps off the page to thrilling and often humorous effect. While the art design is similar, if not identical, to the “Young David” show’s design, the book team has instead chosen to draw their artwork from scratch. It’s a commendable decision that lends an original and fun storybook feel to all five of David’s adventures.

“Young David: King,” adapted by Andy McGuire with illustrations by Carol Langley, earns our highest recommendation.
