Peace has finally come to Clan Ross of Skye and the laird’s younger brother, Gavin Ross, finds himself adrift, grappling with a sense of purposelessness. His days are filled with mundane tasks of training and patrolling, leaving him restless and yearning for something more. Suddenly their hard-won peace is on the brink of shattering, when a man’s death means years old strife may not be dormant. Gavin is torn between defending his clan and uncovering the enemy, all while grappling with an unsettling woman whose mysterious past forces him to confront choices about love, loyalty, and sacrifice. After a narrow escape and long days at sea, Freya Craig manages to reach the shores of the Isle of Skye. Fearing being turned away, she keeps her secret a past. That the laird’s handsome brother, Gavin, takes a personal interest in her, is a light in her rather gloomy life. Will she find a place to call her own, or will the ghosts of the past unravel everything she holds dear?A gripping tale of love, betrayal, and self-discovery.
Bestselling author Hildie McQueen loves unusual situations and getting into interesting adventures, which is what her characters do as well. She writes romance because she is in love with love! Author of Romance in Highland historical, Western Historical and contemporary, she writes something every reader can enjoy.
Most days she can be found in her pajamas hiding from deliverymen while drinking tea from her David Gandy coffee mug. In the afternoons she browses the Internet for semi-nude men to post on Facebook.
Hildie's favorite past-times are romance conventions, traveling, shopping and reading.
She resides in beautiful small town Georgia with her super-hero husband Kurt, an unruly boy Chihuahua Pepito and a spoiled rotten girl Chiweenie named Lola.
Gavin & Freya. This has been my favorite from this series of brothers. The storyline kept me engaged and I really liked Gavin and Freya.
He was drawn to her from the moment her and her brother washed up on the shoreline after a bad storm. Her brother ended up passing away. She's secretive of her past and come to find out she had fallen in love with a man and that man ended up killing her parents. He had planned to also kill her brother so he could marry Freya and take ownership of their lands.
The Ross Clan has been dealing with some random attacks on their people. A rival clan then declares war and attacks them. There is a battle and Gavin is injured. Despite the attacks not stemming from Freya or her past, Gavin is angry when he finds out about her past. They plan to send her away to Darach's lands to give her a chance of a new start. She decides to leave on her own and ends up getting taken by her betrothed.
He takes her back to her home and plans on marrying her to get her lands. Her uncle comes to her rescue and Gavin ends up showing up and tells her that he wants to marry her. They have to decide if they want to stay on her lands or turn them over to her cousin (uncle's son). Alexander, Gavin's older brother and laird tells Gavin to stay and run the lands himself. The uncle has his own land that he had planned to turn over to his son and Gavin wouldn't have his own lands if he returned with his family. They are going to expand the Ross' lands.

Gavin is the third son of the Ross clan from Skye. When a woman, Freya, washes up on shore with her brother, Gavin is tasked with finding out what he can about her. But Freya is not talking, even after her brother perishes and she is alone. There is a definite attraction between with Freya and Gavin but she is too afraid to trust. Her secrets will bring danger and regret to her and Gavin and they must decide to trust each other before it is too late.
Beathan and Freya Craig were on the run to get away from Freya’s betrothed, they were being chased and with no cover around to hide they let their horses go and found their way to the sea. They were on their way to their uncles. As they take to the sea they encountered a storm that took them to the Ross clan’s shore. Her brother was very sick and ended up perishing from exposure and refusing to eat or drink so that his sister could survive. Now she lived at the keep and worked as a lundress keeping her past a secret from everyone.
This story was just what I needed! I loved Gavin and Freya and the subplot related to the attacks was also interesting. In some ways the ending felt like it wasn't fully resolved. There was no mention of what happened to Tasgall. But overall I loved the romance between the two MCs, I love all the brothers, and Knox! of Clan Ross of Skye and I can't wait for Alexander's book. Hoping Knox also gets a book.
Ms. McQueen has such a talent in writing about her characters, you feel as if you know them personally before the book is over! I could almost feel myself standing in the great room in front of the fire. She describes Gavin so well you can almost see him! I fell in love with this book! I can't wait for the next book in this series!!!!! The Raven!!!
The Hawk is quite a story. The third born of sonsmeant he had tomfind his own road. Freya, left on her own due the murders of her parents and brother. Freya runs to avoid marriage to the person who murdered her family. Freya and Gavin must travel a difficult path to survive the trials of life. Awesome book!
Great storyline. Can't get enough of the Ross men. Love the Highlander men and how they love their mates. Those were the days when men were men. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
This was a good story that I waited for it to come on KU and then because of technical problems I was just getting it read after I had read 10 chapters. I will look forward to The Raven coming on KU.
What did I like? I liked how I was first time in my life, knowing the names of the characters. I don’t know how the author did it, but she did. I would recommend this book you those who like romance in the highlands with a highlander.
I didn’t think he remains in character. If he is so brutal and is the reason Freye and her brother escape, why wouldn’t he continue in his brutality when he brings her back. He just backs off and is docile.
The Clan Ross of Skye books are wonderful! Each book gives a more in-depth look into each brother's lives and loves. The strong women in their lives bring you along, as they cope with the troubles of the time in which the story is told. Very enjoyable story!
I liked the characters and the story. I do think the story needed a little more depth in some areas. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
