Rate this book
Desperate times mean taking desperate measures.

Her husband is dead and now her children are being taken away. Hannah Butler is struggling with the loss of her husband and the family business. Her in-laws have given her until the end of the month to either sell the wainwright business or remarry. Since she refuses to give up her deceased husband’s dream that leaves her only one choice… to marry and to do it quickly. In desperation, she sends out a plea in the territory’s newspaper for an honorable husband who knows how to build wagons and to help her manage the business. Never did she think someone would answer it. But he did.

Calvin Henderson is on the run. His father, the notorious outlaw, Ray ‘The Ox’ Henderson wants Cal to continue the family’s criminal ways and will go to all lengths to round him up and bring him in. Wanted posters are plastered everywhere in Nevada, by the gang, claiming he had stolen silver from a mine in Carson City. His best bet is to hide somewhere his father would never look for him… Utah. But luck seems to be on his side when he sees a woman’s plea for a mail order husband, even though he knows nothing about running a business or being a wainwright. At least it will keep him hidden until he runs again. But could Hannah change his mind?

Reading Mail Order Wainwright was delightful. We are so used to reading about mail order brides, that is was a pleasure to read a mail order husband story. Hannah is struggling, her husband was killed almost a year ago. She is trying to run his wainwright business and take care of two children. Her mother in-law is taking her children away, unless she gets the business back on track. Was is Hannah supposed to do now, she only has a month. She places an ad for a husband that knows how to build wagons. Cal, trying to hide and start over, answers the ad. His past is catching up we with him and Hannah is opening his heart. Can faith help them both.
I was given an ARC of this book by the author for an honest review.

FROM THIEF TO HUSBAND

The story is part of the Honorable Husbands series by various authors and each story will read as a stand-alone and can be read in any order. These are clean, Western historical tales that mitigating circumstances will result in couples seeking a mail-order spouse.

Hannah Butler is a widow raising two children, Sarah and Jacob, and trying to keep the business she and her late husband, Samuel, started in Richfield, Utah. With the help of two men, Bart and George, they have kept the wainwright open—but they are getting behind on orders. While she needs more help, she can’t afford it. Then when her mother-in-law threatens her and takes away her two children, the unthinkable becomes real—she needs an honorable husband.

“An ad in the newspaper was a long shot, but it was her only shot. She just hoped it would be enough.”

Cal ‘Rusty’ Henderson is the son of Ray ‘The Ox’ Henderson. After his mother died, he was taken to live with his father, the head of the Henderson Gang of outlaws. At first, Cal thought it was fun—but it quickly soured. He doesn’t want this life—he has escaped a few times, only to be caught and whipped by his father. This time, he hopes to escape him forever—but that is still a long shot. There are wanted posters with his picture and name on them.

“Wanted for murder and theft in Carson City. Rusty Henderson, $4,000. To capture the whole Henderson Gang, $10,000.”

What a surprise when Cal sees an ad in the newspaper for a widow seeking an honorable husband to help in the family’s wainwright business. At least this gives him a place to hide out and start life as an honorable man.

“I need a man of good character, skilled in the trade of wainwright, and experienced in business management. Honorable and single gentlemen between the ages of 30 and 40 are welcome to apply.”

Hannah: Tell me, Mr. Stanton, can you build a wagon?
Cal: I’ve built a few in my lifetime. I’ve spent the past three years managing a crew of eight unruly men in the last shop I was at. I know about money, and I feel I’m pretty good at finding new customers.
Hannah: Come walk with me. I am on my way to the General Store to place an order for more wagon bolts.
Cal: I’d be glad to join you.

I really liked the story, and the author did an amazing job of painting the picture as the pages turned. I enjoyed seeing Cal realize that he needed a God and call out to Him, seeking forgiveness. The story isn’t preachy, it is honest and heartwarming. Yes, it has the good, the bad, and the ugly of people. And true, Cal had lived a sinful criminal life that was forced upon him by his earthly father, it is his Heavenly Father, that offered redemption and grace.

Hannah lost her husband almost a year ago and is trying to raise her 2 kids and run her wainwright business.  Her mother-in-law takes her children away from her stating that Hannah needed to remarry and get the business making money again.  Hannah places an ad in the territory newspaper looking for an honorable husband who knows how to be a wainwright (wagon builder).  Cal has been raised by his outlaw father, Ox, and doesn’t want to be an outlaw anymore.  His father’s gang is robbing a silver mine in Carson City when Cal gets the opportunity to escape his father.  He ends up stopping at a farm and trying to stay in the barn in Mesquite, Nevada without being noticed but the farm owner who is also the Bishop of the church there catches him.  Bishop Vermont ends up helping Cal and sending him further north to Utah.  The Bishop invites Cal to have dinner with them and while he’s there, he’s given a newspaper.  He sees Hannah’s ad and decides Richfield, Utah would be a great place to hide from his father.  Hannah, who is strong in her church, ends up helping Cal see that God loves him and can forgive any sin if the sinner is truly repentant.  Cal and Hannah end up getting closer.  I want to say more but I’ll give spoilers, and I don’t want to do that.  This story is a sweet romance with some suspense and action.  It has a HEA ending.  I highly recommend it.

I wanted to take a chance on a different type of read. I could not be happier that I choose this one. This is a clean romance with an intense interesting storyline. Hannah is a new widow. She lost her husband not that long ago and is trying to raise her children and run the business that she owned with her husband. But things are falling apart and her nasty mother-in-law steps in and demands that she find a husband and turn the business around or she will forever change her life.
Hannah ends up putting an ad in the newspaper looking for a mail order husband. Cal sees the ad and knows that this is the chance to get away from his father and try to change the path of his life. But secrets will be revealed, and the past will come back to haunt him.
Will these two be able to find love among the lies and enemies?
This was a very sweet clean romance. It was enjoyable and intense right from the beginning. I will be reading more from Stacey.

WOW! Not your usual mail order husband story. Such fantastic twists make this a page turner. I am awake at 2am, unable to put the book down. Robbers vs Law, poor Cal is caught in the middle of a swamp of family history! Cal works hard to get Hannah, his mail order brides, her kids back. A DO NOT miss reading this book! Ms. Stacy weaves a true gripping tale.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! Despite dark secrets, danger lurking behind every corner, romance peeked its head amidst it all, eliciting hope of good things to come. And the ever consistent presence of God was the healing balm to troubled hearts. Excellent read!

Good book

Even without coffee!

Seriously, though, Cal and Hannah really had life stacked against both of them. But then, they met each other. I loved how they discussed what truly mattered- trust in each other and trust in God.

This was a good addition to the series. Hannah Butler received the answer that I would have feared getting, not really a wainwright, running from outlaws and the law, not really wanting to get married, not exactly what her ad requested. In spite of the law and outlaw bit in his past, Calvin was really a good guy. This was an entertaining book.
