In a Nutshell: A collection of graphic short stories that focusses on the overlap between the observable and the occult. This was too metaphysical and experimental for my liking, so take this review with a pinch of salt.

This graphic novel was originally published in Spanish in 2019. This English translation by Andrea Rosenberg is due to be released in September 2024.
The book contains twelve stories that, though not interlinked, have some bearing on each other while still staying independent in their own content. There is no overarching plot, but there certainly is a common theme: self-discovery. The stories focus on the sense of feeling lost, of being summoned by the unknown, of discovering one’s identity under a mask. There is a recurring motif of a character feeling that someone is watching them when they are asleep. While experiencing this sensation, they try to figure out who/what is calling to them, why they can’t make sense of their immediate reality, and who they truly are at their core.
Each of the above aspects reveals how abstract this collection is, and unfortunately for me and my practical Capricorn head, I don’t do abstract. Even when stories go into the surreal, I prefer seeing some sense in the nonsense, which rarely happens here. There is very little dialogue across the stories, so when some characters across multiple stories resemble each other, it is tough to figure out if they are the same person or if the resemblance is yet another random mystery of the universe.
The world in which the stories are based is strangely oxymoronic, feeling primitive yet futuristic. The belief system seems primeval while the lifestyle seems to belong ahead in time. The set comes a full circle when the last story ends at the same place as the first begins. But don’t imagine a circular path because of this coincidence. It is more akin to a random scribble that crosses over an earlier line than the completion of a narrative loop.
This line from the novel best represents what I felt while reading it: “Something's trying to communicate with me but I can't understand the language.” Well, I understood the written language, but I didn’t get what the book was trying to communicate. As there are twelve stories across 150 pages, each tale gets hardly a few pages to create an impression. The only story that I liked was of the widow who feels comforted by a strange presence in her house. I found this the only subplot with a proper flow, even when it didn’t offer closure at the end. The rest go so meta that it feels like having a weird fever dream. (or maybe, multiple little fever dreams.)
The illustrations do save the book to some extent. The art style is different in each story. The colour palette shuffles between B&W, monochrome green, and earth-toned. The sketches match the mood of the story. If the book was intended to serve as a showcase of the author’s artistic talent and range, it functions quite well.
Basically, I didn't understand the point of the whole thing. It might work for someone who is more in touch with the higher consciousness, but I am of a more earthly bent of mind, and hence this book went above my head.
My daughter read this along with me. Unlike me, she IS of a philosophical disposition (she certainly doesn’t get it from me!), and enjoys reading books that delve into the subconscious and the metaphysical. She liked this book better than I did and found it thought-provoking, but what she enjoyed the most were the illustrations as the graphics emphasised the surrealness of the content.
In short, this book might work for the right reader, one who would enjoy an exploration into unknown realms of the mind and the occult. I wasn’t the right reader.

Los dibujos de Laura Pérez son bonitos hasta decir basta. La edición, una preciosidad. Comencé el cómic encandilada por la atmósfera de misterio creada, pero al poco ya estaba clamando porque alguien le escribiera a la autora un guión suficientemente interesante para aprovechar tanto derroche estético. Tiene imágenes y momentos aislados muy potentes, pero el conjunto se me antoja muy, muy deslavazado.

June 15, 2023Usando solo la cantidad justa de palabras, Laura Pérez muestra en «Ocultos» una serie de historietas breves en las que lo misterioso, lo onírico, lo inexplicable… se mezcla con lo más cotidiano. La aproximación que la artista hace hacía varios miedos humanos es muy original y su dibujo es, de verdad, una locura.

Ocultos trata sobre las presencias... sobre lo onírico, lo espiritual, las cargas, los recuerdos. Como los sueños, no es lineal ni concreto, ni empieza por el principio y te lleva a un final. Te traslada a ese momento en que tu mente vuela libre sin ataduras y lo hace con una presentación preciosa, un color cuidado y un dibujo de detalles.
La trascendencia, lo metafísico pero también lo terrenal que se unen y se dan la mano a través de imágenes, rompiendo la línea.
Oculto trata de las presencias... o de las ausencias, esos huecos que llenamos con algo intangible.

Laura Peréz nos quiere mostrar a través de los ojos de distintos personajes dibujados con maestría que existe quizás una reliadad paralela que sólo algunas y algunos pueden y quieren ver. Con un dibujo preciso, hermoso y que evoca los sueños, nos recuerda que a veces compartimos el mundo con cuestiones que no conocemos del todo. Una hermosa forma de acercarnos a esas cuestiones que no entendemos del todo.

Though a truly cool concept, this book’s exploration of the overlap between reality and the occult simply wasn’t developed as much as I had hoped. Many others have mentioned a similar sentiment, but this book is just far too abstract — at least for me — and I also found it to be somewhat repetitive. This book qualifies as a very high 2-stars, borderline 3-stars, but unfortunately it did not deliver what I expected.

Tuve la suerte de poder acudir a la presentación de este cómic en Madrid. Tal como dijo la autora, se trata de un proyecto muy experimental, tanto a nivel gráfico como de narrativa. Se compone de varias historias, todas ellas con el tema común de lo misterioso y lo paranormal. De acuerdo con dicha temática, la narración es poética e intuitiva; incluso en ocasiones etérea, como los espíritus que en ella aparecen.
Por supuesto, a los lectores se nos permite sacar nuestras propias conclusiones al respecto de cada pieza, invitándonos a reflexionar y a plantearnos nuestra propia realidad.

Execrable. Me ha parecido una tomadura de pelo. Pretencioso, vacuo, historias que no conducen a ninguna parte, pastiche de imágenes sacadas del imaginario de Miyazaki, mal escrito... El dibujo llamativo y el formato del cómic llevará a muchos a comprarlo (como me pasó a mí). Craso error!!

A ver, visualmente es maravilloso. No dejaba de sacar fotos y enviarlas a mis grupos de lecturas. Es para quedarte atontada mirando las páginas. Pero las historias... No hay por donde cogerlas. Y esa es la verdad. Y por eso no le puedo poner más nota.

another really interesting comic from laura perez. this one actually reminded me quite a bit of PTSD Radio, though it's not nearly as heavy on horror. instead it's more lightly creepy, and it makes no effort to give any definitive answers or reasons behind the stories it shows. it's not even entirely clear how they all connect. i'm not sure i entirely "got" everything here, but i really enjoyed it and will continue to happily pick up perez's work.

Prikrito je najnovejši risoroman za odrasle, ki je izšel pri VigeVageKnjige. Je zbirka kratkih stripovskih zgodb in takšnega formata nisem brala še nikoli. Rdeča nit vseh zgodb so prikrite, skorajda okultne reči, ki se nam vsem dogajajo vsak dan, če ji želimo videti in razumeti, ali pa ne.
Ves čas se zdi, da se zgodbe na nek način povezujejo med seboj, čeprav so povsem različne. Priznam, da sem dolgo časa skušala razumeti vsako posamezno zgodbo, povezavo med njimi... A sem nekje na polovici ugotovila, da ravno s tem delam veliko napako. Bistvo te knjige je namreč ravno to, da znotraj našega sveta obstajajo še številni drugi svetovi. Nekatere si ustvarjamo vsak sam zase, drugi morda prihajajo iz povsem drugačnih svetov in energij... Bistvo pa je, da se moramo le tem svetovom enostavno prepustiti in jim dovoliti da obstajajo.
Velikokrat smo ljudje namreč obsedeni s tem, da moramo vse razumeti, vedeti, obrazložiti na nek logičen, objektiven način. A dejstvo je, da svet ni vedno takšen - logičen, razumljiv in tudi to je povsem vredu.

El dibujo de Laura me parece precioso, de una sensibilidad perfecta para las historias que quiere contar, pero creo que mi problema con Ocultos son precisamente esas historias. No he sabido conectar muy bien con ellas, a pesar de que hay un par que me han gustado muchísimo, y al terminar el libro tenía una sensación de frialdad hacía él. De todas formas creo que Ocultos es un tebeo interesante y experimental, muy cuidado y muy bien editado. Y así da gusto.

The art work, design and colour are as dreamy as the book. So rich and delicious, I could stare at the pages all day.
The story was not my cup of tea however. Though I commend anyone who goes for something more surrealist I wasn’t pulled in enough to hold my attention. Could also just be lost in translation as well. Here’s to the English language being completely useless
Worth it for the art though and a little fun dip into dreams and the haunted.

Una novela gráfica de la inquietud. Muy experimental y preciosista, donde lo importante no es la historia sino las sensaciones que es capaz de evocar la autora. Recomiendo leerla varias veces antes de decidir si te gusta o no, porque es una novela gráfica que va creciendo a medida que profundizas en ella.

Bonita, inquietante, bizarra y aterradora. Es tan etérea y onírica que parece que el concepto se te escapa entre los dedos, como una brisa, pero a la vez funciona tan bien con el tema, que no puedo más que aplaudirla. Sobre la belleza y la delicadeza del dibujo, solo se me viene a la mente una palabra: sublime.

Leí este cómic el año pasado gracias a eBiblio y ahora he tenido la oportunidad de disfrutarlo en físico.
El arte de Laura Pérez es precioso, como siempre. Su empleo del color y las tintas negras es de un gusto exquisito, podría pasar horas contemplando una viñeta.
Ocultos no es un cómic al uso y que puede no ser del gusto de todos. Se trata de una antología que recoge momentos casi sin diálogo en los que prima la atmósfera. No sería adecuado denominar estos fragmentos como historias, pues muchos de ellos no cuentan con trama; incluso algunos podrían asemejarse a un poema críptico en el que no sabes explicar que ocurre exactamente, pero deja un rastro de sensaciones que permite comprenderlo en su conjunto.
El tema que vertebra esta antología es lo oculto, como su título indica. En esta línea, la autora propone una aproximación a lo paranormal desde un sentimiento primitivo de familiaridad. Los ovnis, los espíritus y las dimensiones paralelas se convierten en algo cotidiano. Pérez construye una atmósfera en la que todo es conocido, pero hay algo que no encaja. Esto hace que el lector transite por un valle inquietante demasiado similar a su día a día.
En definitiva, Ocultos es la entidad que te observa en las sombras y, al mismo tiempo, te acoge como una vieja amiga.

3,5 en realidad. Me gustan más las ilustraciones que las historias, que son como los pimientos del padrón, que unas pican y otras non. Pero las que pican muy sabrosas e incluso algunas divertidas.

Un prodigio estético de evocación.
El trazo de Laura es gozo visual y picada mental.
El mundo mágico-onírico que retrata es sin duda evocador, pero pese a sus conexiones, las historias me han parecido un poco faltas de trama. Llenar lo que falta quizás es el reto, pero incluso la imaginación tiene difícil competir con el pulso de una artista que dibuja con elegancia y contundencia hasta lo oculto.
El trazo de Laura es gozo visual y picada mental.

No llega a las 4/5 pero está cerca. Me encanta el estilo que tiene, de 10. Me habría gustado que profundizara más en las historias, algunas son tan cortas que no deja tiempo a elaborarlas. Creo que su idea de lo onírico y lo oculto deja tanta libertad al lector que puede resultar confusa, así que si esa era la idea principal *besito de chef*. Me gusta el cierre pero podría haber explotado más la trama hasta llegar ahí.

Es un conjunto de historietas que tienen cierta conexión. La mayoría me han sabido a poco, creo que debería haberlas alargado más o haberlas enfocado de otra forma. El dibujo me ha gustado mucho, en una historia he pegado un bote por algo que sucedía solamente en las imágenes, que sí que tenían fuerza, a diferencia del guión.

De ilustración espartana por momentos, y por momentos tan vívida que asusta. Nos sugiere detalles, sueños, sensaciones, ansias, de un mundo paralelo, a menudo oculto, cuya existencia nos daría un respiro a nuestro desconcierto, y con los que es fácil identificarse.

Prvi risoroman uveljavljene ilustratorke Laure Pérez v odličnem prevodu Vesne Velkavrh Bukilica navduši s krasnim ilustratorskim pristopom in barvnimi kompozicijami. Malo manj pa prepriča kot celota, ki je ilustratorsko in sporočilno nekoliko premalo povezana in močna.
