Magic, mad science, and teenagers are a recipe for trouble. As the only living necromancer, fifteen-year-old Avery Special has too much trouble as it is. Trying to use her dark powers for good, she awakens a cyborg from a coma.
The superintelligent Tonika is grateful and full of plans to help Avery help others, but the more Avery helps, the more trouble she gets in.
Her parents are worried. Her boyfriend and girlfriend are lonely. A robot-possessing ghost is on the loose. Oh, and she stole a crystal ball from a museum. How much helping is too much?
Can she afford to not help when the ultimate evil mad scientist tries to destroy the world?
Yet another fine installment of the series. The fact it normalizes dating two people simultaneously, one of whom is another girl, is notable but it's mostly just more fun oddball YA antics in a superhero world. If you liked the previous dozen or so books then you will probably like this one.
I have been avidly reading this series since it's beginning. In general, many people have said that the first book was the best, and that they have been at varying levels of quality since then. Unfortunately, that does continue to hold true here. I like Avery as a character. I think that her schtick of necromancy works well in the plot, since she's always trying to figure out how to do good with powers that aren't necessarily the nicest. That said, it all fell a little bit flat for me. There were so many characters, with so many little side references, that I kept losing track. The plot, while in retrospect had a clear direction, felt like it meandered a lot in getting there. Avery's main group of friends were sidetracked for another new group, who I never really got to grow fond of.
From a technical point of view, I didn't notice any typos, and only a handful of cases of missing words, and one missing quotation mark that had somebody start talking in the middle of descriptive text.
I really wanted to like this book. I do still enjoy the concept of this world, but this one just left me a little bit cold. I finished it more because I wanted to finish it, rather than because I felt like I had to find out what happened next. I'm giving it five stars because Amazon's review system is lousy, and penalizes honest feedback, especially for books that don't get thousands of reviews, but it's not up to the level of the other books in the series.
Cute story for middle grade. Avery is a fun character to read and her conversations with her ghost ancestors are entertaining. Also, couldn't help getting a crush on Mech. That ending. He scared me for a minute. Can't wait to read another of this series with Avery as the main character.
