This is the second instalment in The Last Bear series.
April Wood had an unforgettable adventure on Bear Island but has now returned to the monotony of home in Britain. She struggles with her peers, with school, and being apart from her furry best friend. When news reaches her that a bear has been shot near Svalbard, April is sure that it is her bear and will not let anything, not even the many miles between them, stop her from saving him.
Just like the first series instalment, this proved to be such an inspiring and heart-warming story. April's care for the planet and the creatures who roam across it are inspirational for readers of all ages and her bravery in facing head-on all that she encounters make her a resilient and loveable protagonist. I loved venturing with her across the ice and meeting again beloved characters from book one.

Update on this book! I’ve been asked to be an Ambassador for an International project choosing and getting children’s books into the hands of children in remote schools and orphanages in the Philippines. This one and the first is a definite pick! What a beautiful book and so cleverly written. Hannah Gold is a fantastic Author. I haven’t read book one in this series but knew the basic premise of it and do intend to read it also. Stunning illustrations too! Really special.
Aimed at readers 8 and up it is a powerful message about the state of the Arctic, the demise and hunger of the polar bears and the impact of climate change on all creatures in this special part of our world. By weaving these messages into a heartwarming story it opens doors for great conversation and interest into the fate of these wonderful polar bears. We can’t afford to let them go extinct in a book or in reality.
This is a really special book and I’m not surprised this and Hannah’s two other books have been bestsellers. This is #2 in children’s books on Amazon today. Out now so grab your copy.

She hears that a polar bear gets shot and may be injured or dead and worried it’s her fiend Bear her and her Father travel over again to the cold Arctic. As they search for bear a delightful gift comes their way in the form of a polar bear cub!
This is gorgeous writing for both young readers up to adults. Joyous escapism and getting the true message across to children about the plight of the polar bears who are facing starvation today. The way it’s blended just works. It’s not preachy or over the top and the storytelling is lovely.
I thoroughly enjoyed this gem and highly recommend it to all ages 8 plus. It should be in every library, schools and public in multiple copies! If you can definitely read both books. I’m keen to go back now to Aprils first encounters and special bond built with her Bear. 4 solid stars.

‘Op zoek naar Beer’ is het vervolg van ‘De laatste beer’. In dit boek gaat het verhaal van April, een eenzaam meisje dat met haar vader naar de Noordpool reist, verder. De magische band die ze met Beer heeft opgebouwd is nog steeds aanwezig en het gemis is groot. Paniek slaat toe als April hoort dat er op Spitsbergen een ijsbeer is neergeschoten. Ze is bang dat het Beer is en wil meteen naar de Noordpool vertrekken. Daar begint ze opnieuw aan een onvergetelijke reis over toendra’s en ijzige gletsjers.
April is een fijn hoofdpersonage om te volgen. Ze is dapper, maar ook vastberaden en wederom hierdoor verovert ze al snel je hart. Haar vastberadenheid om Beer te helpen toont hoe moedig ze is, vooral wanneer ze ontdekt hoe de klimaatverandering zijn leefgebied bedreigt. Hannah Gold schetst dit thema op een manier die kinderen raakt zonder hen te overweldigen. Door de oprechte emoties en spanning van het avontuur in de ijzige wildernis, is het verhaal zowel educatief als aangrijpend.
De beschrijvingen van de omgeving zijn mooi en beeldend. De kou is voelbaar tijdens het lezen en ook de stilte van de Noordpool kan je horen. April Wood is al een jaar teruggekeerd van haar avontuur op Bereneiland. Haar leven is nu vrij normaal, maar April vindt het vooral heel erg saai. Regelmatig denkt ze nog terug aan haar spannende tijd op Bereneiland, en de bijzondere vriendschap die ze daar gevonden heeft.
Op een gegeven moment krijgt April te horen dat er op Spitsbergen een ijsbeer is neergeschoten. April is direct bang dat het om haar vriend, Beer, gaat. Ze vraagt haar vader om samen terug te keren naar het noordpoolgebied. Paps stemt niet meteen in, hij heeft hier een nieuwe liefde gevonden en kijkt er eigenlijk niet naar uit om het gevaar weer op te zoeken. April is echter nogal volhoudend, waardoor haar vader uiteindelijk toegeeft.
Ze reizen samen naar de noordelijkste uithoeken van het noordpoolgebied. Inwoners weten niet of de neergeschoten ijsbeer nog leeft of niet, en niemand kan bevestigen dat het om Beer gaat. Inwoners raden af om op zoek te gaan naar Beer, gezien de vele andere ijsberen, die haar niet als vriend zullen beschouwen. April is echter niet tegen te houden, ze moet en zal haar vriend vinden.
Onderweg treft ze nog een beer die hulp nodig heeft: een klein ijsbeerwelpje. April kan het welpje niet zo maar achterlaten. Bovendien, zijn ijsberen niet een soort die wel wat hulp kunnen gebruiken? Uiteraard neemt ze het ijsbeerwelpje onder haar hoede. Hierdoor komt ze echter oog in oog te staan met haar grootste angsten.
Inspirerend personage
In De laatste beer ontdekten we al hoe ontzettend April Wood is en dat zij echt opkomt voor waar zij in gelooft. In Op zoek naar beer laat ze dit opnieuw zien. Hoewel de gevaren die April meemaakt wat over-the-top zijn, denk ik wel dat April voor veel jonge kinderen een inspirerend personage kan zijn. Door haar moed, maar ook haar passie om het goede voor de natuur en dieren te willen doen.
Avontuurlijk
Op zoek naar beer is nog avontuurlijker dan het voorgaande deel. Het is hierdoor ook regelmatig spannend. Het boek wist mij dan ook wat minder te ontroeren dan De laatste beer, maar desalniettemin vond ik het weer een vermakelijk kinderboek.
Het boek is overigens voorzien van prachtige zwart-wit illustraties gemaakt door Levi Pinfold, die het verhaal ondersteunen en het boek echt iets extra’s geeft.
Ik raad zowel De laatste beer als het vervolg Op zoek naar beer zeker aan voor kinderen die ook houden van natuur en kinderen. Het zijn denk ik ook zeer geschikte boeken wanneer je het gesprek aan wil gaan over de opwarming van de aarde en natuurbescherming.

🤍One more story that made me fall in love with the book about love, friendship, adventures, kindness, and animals.
🐻❄️The Plot: We keep following April Wood. The girl and her father come back from Bear Island and try to adjust to a new life. If April's father succeeds more or less with their new daily routine, April feels utterly the opposite. The girl feels like a stranger and outsider at school and home. April can't stop thinking about her true friend – Bear. When she hears the news that a polar bear has been shot and injured, she doesn't hesitate a second. She persuades her father to travel back to the Arctic. But the journey appears to be a bit different than April expects.
🐻❄️The Writing Style: I fell in love with "The Last Bear" at once and was so happy to read the sequel. The writing pace is dynamic and adorably captivating. There were a lot of dangerous twists, and it made my son and me fidget, worrying about the main character. I truly adored how masterfully the writer infiltrated informative and illuminative aspects into the book – there are so many curious facts about animals and the planet. I like how the writers gently put the warnings through the novel for young minds to be aware of how dangerous such adventures could be. I loved how the fate of the animal and human intertwined and how it transformed them both. There is everything in this book – love, adventures, dangers, twists, lessons, intrigue, and morals. I deliberately read this book slowly, savoring every page and event of the novel to the fullest. I did want to stay with April and her fluffy friends a bit longer.
🐻❄️The Characters: All the characters are portrayed in some way that I felt to be their family member. Literally, it felt as if I traveled a lot, came back, and met all the family. It was so cozy, heart-warming, and a lovely feeling. The previous characters changed and matured, got new features, but still stayed the same beloved characters. The new ones surprised me positively and made me curious about their life in the future. The writer succeeded in creating perfect and memorable characters who stayed with me long after I finished reading the novel.

وای که چقدر زیبا بود. حسابی لذت بردم ازش.
جلد دوم کتاب آخرین خرس که گویا دیدار مجدد ایپرل و خرسه. من جلد اول رو نخوندم و جلد دوم رو برای نمونهخوانی خوندم و حسابی لذت بردم و مشتاق شدم جلد اول رو هم بخونم.
ایپرل یک سال و 5 ماه بعد از بازگشت از جزیره خرسها، با شنیدن خبر تیر خوردن خرسی قطبی، با پدرش راهی شوالبارد میشود تا دریابد خرس تیرخورده، خرس خودش است یا نه.
آنها راهی قطب میشوند و ایپرل خرسش را دوباره میبیند. اما اتفاقی افتاده که خرس به کمک ایپرل نیاز دارد و ایپرل تلاش میکند که به خرس و تولهاش کمک کند و...
خیلی قشنگ و سرشتر از احساسات زیبای حیواندوستی بود. دقیقا عین کارتونها خرسها رو در تعامل با ایپرل تصور میکردم و ارتباط عمیق بینشون من رو تحتتاثیر قرار داد.
توصیفات فضای بکر قطب، خرسها و سگهای قطبی و هرآنچه از طبیعت قطب میشه کشف کرد، من رو در دنیای خودش غرق کرد.
جالبه که نویسنده برای نوشتن کتابش به سوالبارد رفته و از نزدیک محیطش رو دیده و اطلاعات کسب کرده.
تاکید کتاب روی حفاظت از محیطزیست و تاثیرات اقلیمه که جان حیوانات رو به خطر انداخته و این به گردن انسانهاست که جلوی خطر بیشتر رو بگیرن.
ارتباط ایپرل و خرس و تولهخرس بااینکه واقعی نیست، اما بهشدت احساسی و باورپذیر بود و برای کودکان بهشدت آموزندهس و برای بزرگسالان بهشدت عمیق و تاثیرگذار. خیلی لذت بردم از خوندنش.
جلد دوم کتاب آخرین خرس که گویا دیدار مجدد ایپرل و خرسه. من جلد اول رو نخوندم و جلد دوم رو برای نمونهخوانی خوندم و حسابی لذت بردم و مشتاق شدم جلد اول رو هم بخونم.
ایپرل یک سال و 5 ماه بعد از بازگشت از جزیره خرسها، با شنیدن خبر تیر خوردن خرسی قطبی، با پدرش راهی شوالبارد میشود تا دریابد خرس تیرخورده، خرس خودش است یا نه.
آنها راهی قطب میشوند و ایپرل خرسش را دوباره میبیند. اما اتفاقی افتاده که خرس به کمک ایپرل نیاز دارد و ایپرل تلاش میکند که به خرس و تولهاش کمک کند و...
خیلی قشنگ و سرشتر از احساسات زیبای حیواندوستی بود. دقیقا عین کارتونها خرسها رو در تعامل با ایپرل تصور میکردم و ارتباط عمیق بینشون من رو تحتتاثیر قرار داد.
توصیفات فضای بکر قطب، خرسها و سگهای قطبی و هرآنچه از طبیعت قطب میشه کشف کرد، من رو در دنیای خودش غرق کرد.
جالبه که نویسنده برای نوشتن کتابش به سوالبارد رفته و از نزدیک محیطش رو دیده و اطلاعات کسب کرده.
تاکید کتاب روی حفاظت از محیطزیست و تاثیرات اقلیمه که جان حیوانات رو به خطر انداخته و این به گردن انسانهاست که جلوی خطر بیشتر رو بگیرن.
ارتباط ایپرل و خرس و تولهخرس بااینکه واقعی نیست، اما بهشدت احساسی و باورپذیر بود و برای کودکان بهشدت آموزندهس و برای بزرگسالان بهشدت عمیق و تاثیرگذار. خیلی لذت بردم از خوندنش.

Somehow this is even better than The Last Bear! Hannah Gold’s writing is powerful yet extremely accessible for children, I can’t wait to share this with my school book club.

What a sequel! A wonderfully moving tale where April revisits Bear! I love this determined young lady and how she is passionate about the environment and the animals she adores. Thought the author explored really well the changing relationship between April and her dad and drew parallels in the story which were brilliantly woven. You do have to suspend your disbelief somewhat - not just that a polar bear would befriend a girl but also that a male polar bear would care for a cub (which as far as I’m aware they would not) but if you can take that leap of faith with the author you are wonderful rewarded with a tale that will melt your heart.

I loved this book as much as I loved the first book, The Last Bear. Aahh, April and Bear has my entire heart ❤️
In this book we follow April who wants to find Bear again after she comes to know that he has been shot. This is her journey trying to find him and trying to help him.
This book was also as emotional as the first one. I do not cry usually while reading but damn it, April and Bear makes me cry every single time. There were many instances which broke my heart, especially the moments between April and Bear, and the mentions of the devastating consequences of global warming.
I was not expecting to love this book as much as The Last Bear because that book was a favorite and I didn't know if the sequel could stand up to it, but this book was just as good as the first one.
This series is honestly one of my favourite series ever. Beautiful and a must read series, in my opinion. This series successfully talks about climate change and its consequences, but not only that this book is about friendship and loyalty and love which will warm your heart.

The Last Bear by Hannah Gold was a wonderful book telling the story of April Wood rescuing a trapped and starving polar bear - despite numerous obstacles. April is back in this sequel and is even more headstrong and determined to fight for the plight of polar battles and battle against climate change. News reaches April and her father that a polar bear has been shot near the town of Svalbard. April is convinced it’s “ Bear” and with her father return to Norway with the aim of helping Bear. April’s determination to find Bear is palpable and at times she probably crosses the line of disregarding advice but her courage and commitment to save Bear takes her on a series of adventures - each showing the impact on global warming on the plight of polar bears. April is reunited with characters from the previous book. This is a rip- roaring tale ( no pun intended as Bear certainly roars a lot) and will be an exciting read for the 8 plus group. Plenty of nail- biting moments - a great sequel .

The books in this duology (series?) are stunning. The way that the surroundings are described in such a rich way that you truly can picture the frozen tundra. The relationship between Bear and April is exactly what's needed to inspire hope and shows how the human impact on animals can be amazingly touching, but also so so harsh. It makes me want to go to Svalbard, see our impact first hand, but also see the beauty of the Earth. This book and it's predecessor make me want to do more. I dare anybody to read this book and to then not want to fight for the climate, nature and animals - even if in the smallest of ways. These books should be required reading. The audiobook and illustrations are also beautiful. I can't sing these books praises enough.

Vervolg op ‘De laatste beer’. April gaat op zoek naar Beer op Spitsbergen. Er is iets waarom Beer wil dat ze terugkeert. Het verhaal komt dit keer wat traag op gang, maar waarschijnlijk ook omdat je graag wilt dat er iets gaat gebeuren. Het is niet zo voorspelbaar als dat je misschien hoopt, maar dat maakt het verhaal alleen maar sterker.
Fijn boek om te gebruiken in de klas. Het gaat over klimaatverandering, vriendschap, helpen en de Noordpool. Vanaf 10 jaar.

When I first requested Hannah Gold’s middle grade novel, Finding Bear, I didn’t realize that it was a sequel to Gold’s first novel The Last Bear in The Last Bear series. I borrowed The Last Bear from the library and read it in preparation for the second installment, and I really enjoyed both!
I commend Gold for using storytelling, specifically April Wood’s story, to demonstrate the ways in which April’s experiences demonstrate to readers how climate change (global warming) affects an environment and all living things in that environment. And while April’s friendship with a polar bear which she affectionately names Bear is the fantastical element of this series, April befriends other people (children and adults), who support her not only her dream to live in the Arctic close to Bear but also her mission to fight climate change. This story also touches on a father/daughter relationship after the loss of April’s mother, the relationship she and her father have with other family members, and how April navigates complex relationships with adults when she herself is still a child.
Finding Bear is a bildungsroman that is so much more than a bildungsroman because it’s April figuring out how she—as a child—is strong and smart, but isn’t as emotionally intelligent as an adult (which Hedda, another character, points out), but the story also highlights how young children who don’t “fit in” with other children their own age struggle in social situations when they are only among peers. This type of situation is not as uncommon as it may seem, and Gold’s ability to write about it in a manner which acknowledges April’s age but also illustrates her relatively successful relationships with adults is done well and isn’t too mature or too childish—such a well-written experience!
I’ve loved both The Last Bear and Finding Bear and would highly recommend them to younger readers! The strong environmental message at the heart of the story which is rooted in the idea that love and friendship are the foundation of saving animals and the environment is a bit cheesy…But true.

Could Hannah Gold keep April and Bear's story at the quality of The Last Bear?
Well, I think she did.
April is in England with her father, living near Granny Apples and the coast. She is at school, but she doesn't feel like she belongs. School is difficult. Dad has a new girlfriend Maria; she is April's head teacher! But her life is missing something....Bear.
One night she wakes...she heard him surely....how could she hear him roar? Tor's email is due the next day - it doesn't arrive on time...and when it does it says a bear has been shot by a tourist in the port at Longyearben. A bear that was on his hind legs, roaring at the sea....just as Bear had done when she said goodbye.
April persuades Dad to return to Svalbard, he's not happy- Maria doesn't really understand why as she hasn't heard the full story. Dad points out it might not be Bear but April is convinced.
When they get to Svalbard, they are staying in a bit of a shabby hotel, run by Jurgen who is surprised to see a child in Svalbard in the Winter. April runs from the Polar Institute in alarm when the man says they shouldn't go looking for an injured polar bear, who probably won't remember her, even if she is THE April Wood! She gets lost. She's at the edge of the town. She gets picked up by a woman who clearly lives there; she makes it quite clear Ashe thinks April is stupid! She drops April back at the hotel. Dad is back here and then Tor arrives!
Jurgen is stunned by their story and arranges for them to be taken to the area they suspect Bear to be...by the woman who picked April up! They tell her they want to see the Northern Lights; Jurgen suggests telling her they're looking for a polar bear isn't a good idea! But things go wrong when a storm blows up, first April and Tor are separated from Hedda and Dad, then April is alone. the dogs take her to a cabin...but she forgets Hedda's rule and doesn't tie them up...in the morning they've gone. But there is something else there...a polar bear....Bear. And he does recognise her!
Bear wants April to ride on his back, he's refusing the peanut butter but seems hungry. Why won't he eat? She leaves Dad a note in the cabin, and climbs on. He takes her to a cave, another bear is there but she has died. Then, Bear makes a different noise and a cub appears from the back of the cave. This is why Bear wouldn't eat. The cub is very small. She decides she has to help. But how?
Suddenly she isn't alone - Tor, he took a sled North from the cabin, while Dad and Hedda went back to Longyearben. She tells Tor the plan.
Hannah's story of Bear and his love for his cub made me unable to put this down (and I'm not a speed reader!) I couldn't stop reading because I had to know if the plan could work.
A twist at the end of the story surprised me and left me with tears rolling down my face and a smile on my lips. Every emotion overflows throughout this book. Hannah's words bring Bear, his cub, April and her family, Tor, Lisé, Jurgen and Hedda to life.
As for Levi's illustrations - well they bring the beauty of the story to your eyes. I couldn't imagine this book without them.

Hannah Gold na žiadosť čitateľov napísala voľné pokračovanie príbehu April a Maca.
April je sice s ockom naspäť v Anglicku, no nevie naňho zabudnúť a v istom momente vycíti, že Maco ju potrebuje. A tak sa vydajú späť na ostrov Svalbard, na veľmi dobrodružnú a riadne mrazivú záchrannú výpravu. Ľadových medveďov tu je tentokrát viac, ale autorka nás trochu vytrápila a na priateľského, spriazneného Maca nás nechala celkom dlho čakať.
Chvíľami nám prišlo, že April bola až trochu príliš vyspelá, až sme jej to nechceli veriť. Ale aj tak sme si príbeh nesmierne užili a deti prosíkali každý večer o “ešte jednu kapitolu, ešte nie je moc neskoro!”
Toto je asi najkrajšia séria detských kníh aktuálne!
PS Musím spomenúť aj ilustrácie, ktoré aj do tejto knižky robil Levi Pinfold, a ktorý vie tak dokonale nakresliť Arktídu, že som aj zababušená v posteli drkotala zubami, a zvieracích hrdinov kreslí tak rozkošne, že som bola pri čítaní ochotná ihneď si adoptovať nejakého ľadového medveďa alebo veľrybu!
PS2 Hannah Gold už napísala aj štvrtý príbeh, o korytnačom ostrove, nevieme sa dočkať 💚

Przyznam, że miałam lekkie obawy przed kontynuacją, bo widziałam tę historię „Ostatniego niedźwiedzia” raczej jako skończoną i pełną samą w sobie. A ta część chyba nawet jeszcze bardziej mi się spodobała i bardziej do mnie trafiła!
W przeciwieństwie do panującego w pierwszym tomie dnia polarnego i lata w rejonach okołobiegunowych — w tej części April przebywa swą wyprawę podczas nocy polarnej i srogiej, już mocno zimowej pogody, przy jeszcze niższych temperaturach.
Surowy klimat rządzi się swoimi prawami, a ludzie żyjący na kole podbiegunowym mają swoje zasady, zwyczaje i osobliwości. I tak jak w pierwszym tomie poznajemy bliżej życie niedźwiedzi polarnych, tak tutaj Autorka przybliża nam społeczeństwo ludzi z Arktyki (co jest bardzo ciekawe, bo jednak to zupełnie inna mentalność i nastawienie do życia).
Dużo wartości i świetnie zakończenie dla tej opowieści. Literatura middle-grade godna polecenia — i nie tylko młodszym odbiorcom.
