Welcome to the world of Rescue for Hire. Meet the team members that make up a company that form a family of heroes. Cade Miller is the owner of the company and is a dominating alpha in mind and body. Cade rescues Bret James on a mission. The instant connection between the two cannot be denied, and he decides to keep him.
Bret may have submissive qualities that mesh completely with the big bear, but it is his mischievous side that keeps Cade on his toes and coming back for more.
But Bret has evil stalking him. When the past wants revenge, can Cade discover who has taken Bret and stop him from being a victim again? The team will have to use all of their skills to rescue Bret before all hell breaks loose. Because when the big, bad alpha is crossed, nothing will stop him from getting his pup back.
Bellann Summer lives in the middle of nowhere with her husband and children surrounded by lakes and woods. In the summer Bellann enjoys fishing, camping, gardening and growing flowers. Autumn is spent out in the woods exploring the beautiful colors and nature at its finest. In the winter there is ice fishing, snowmobiling and sitting in front of the wood fireplace. She has always loved to read and any free time is spent with a book in her hand. When major life changes occurred, she decided to try writing what she liked to read. And it worked.
So I read book 11 first then decided to go back and read the rest of the series. Bear is dominant and protective. Bret is beaten down and needed a savior. These books definitely require you to throw believability out the window. The drama is OTT and it's insta-love on steroids. I don't mind though. Sometimes I need just that.
...I'm still scratching my head as I try to figure out how a story about two queer men could have so much heteronormative and heterosexist bullshit in it. RUN AWAY!!!!
I picked this audio book up on sale for just a couple of dollars. There's a whole series of them, actually, and this is (just) the first! I thought "what the heck" and bought them all.
I was expecting cheesy, and boy, did I get cheesy.
Cade Miller, "the bear", runs a Rescue for Hire company. During a search and rescue due to flooding, he rescues a man from the river, who's got more injuries than can be explained by just being a victim of the flood. Cade, the pup, just knows he wants to love Bret James forever, just by looking at him! Cade takes Bret home with him to nurse him back to health, 'cause that's what you do, when you pull a cute guy out of a river on a rescue mission..
--------------------------------------------- He knew that this small, blond headed man was going to be his for the long haul of life. He just had to wait for the little guy to figure it out. ---------------------------------------------
Bret has quite the horrible back story, the cause of his injuries, but seems to instantly trust the big bear of a man, Cade. Even going They're just perfect for each other, see!
--------------------------------------------- Cade found over the next few days, his dominating personality meshed completely with Bret's more submissive needs. Cade needed to touch Bret every time they were in the same room. Thank goodness this matched Bret's need for Cade's touch. Under Cade's calm, firm demeanor the pup was slowly settling. ---------------------------------------------
Bret's back story is revealed and there's some angst related to this. The story is absolutely OTT and not realistic at all. I'm amazed, really, how much "story" there is in this barely two hour audio.
I started listening to this while doing some house work, and several times I just had roll my eyes, or chuckle, or laugh due to the silly story and narration. It was insta attraction slash love at first sight. Everything is just so exaggerated and silly, couple with the breathy, soft voice of the narrator it's just cheesy romance galore! The narration and story just need to be experienced. It was such a silly, fun and kinda sweet treat.
--------------------------------------------- Cade added a third finger. He then scissored them back and forth to make room. Knowing how large his cock became when he was aroused. ---------------------------------------------
Oh, really, I didn't know..
Bring some crackers and help yourself to a good size portion of cheesy romance!
I know, I know. If you read this book the writing was bad. It may have deserved a lower rating for that but *glances around guiltily* I kinda liked the story. Now, yes, it is TOTALLY unrealistic. If it were paranormal or fantasy of some type I could believe the story line but insta-love in a contemporary read is just not believable. I wanted to believe it though so I did. I thought the two men were just wonderful. There isn't much detail and the characters need fleshing out but *sigh* I did enjoy them. The author does need to work on the head hopping. That was a very, very bad technique. There is NO distinction and so the reader is easily lost. I have read the snippet for the second book and it does the same but I'm hoping the author will adjust future reads.
As bad as all I could sound off on the book and it's writing I really did like it and will most likely buy the next. (I know, bad reader, bad reader!)
I guiltily admit to liking this book more than I should. I think it could use a lot of work as it is fairly lacking in details and, well, reality. (I know - I was probably griping about a surfeit of reality in the last book. *grin*) But we aren't dealing with the supernatural here so my ability to just go with the flow when two guys meet and immediately start living together and have a "deep connection" is severely strained. I needed a little more than "Bear was big and strong and protective" and "Pup was small and submissive and needed protection".
*blush* But at the same time...*shifty eyes* I kind of liked reading about the two of them together, so I guess I was able to toss reality out the window fairly easily after all.
Looks like this might be a first book for the author. Hopefully she will continue to grow and improve.
I actually didn't mind this. Yes, their relationship was on a high speed chase, but it worked.
The writing was too telling and not enough showing for my liking. There was a huge lack of details that bothered me, as well. I wanted to know more about the team. I wanted to know more about why Cade called Bret 'pup' and when did Bret start calling Cade 'bear'? It just came out of the blue. Kind of weird.
Yes, Bret was carried around a lot, but I could see the reasoning because of his feet. I liked that he was strong and didn't break. He wasn't whiny and didn't cry a lot, just had to be carried or sit in Cade's lap.
Overall, it was a first book and I already bought the 2nd of the series.
Having enjoyed a number of other books by Bellann Summer, and loving strong, dominant men as much as I do, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the description for 'Bear's Pup' would lure me right in. The prospect of a brand-new-to-me series involving alpha men and smaller partners, in this case a bear and his pup, and a rescue-for-hire agency was just too much for me to withstand and I had to read it.
I knew I was going to like and respect Cade within a few pages of reading. He and the four men who make up his crew perform mostly rescues within the United States, and they get called in by towns during snowstorms, power outages, flooding, and hostage situations. To hear Cade talk about rescuing people from dying of hypothermia or many other myriad issues that can occur when we face the wrath of Mother Nature, just made me see him as a strong, compassionate man. Definitely a dominant alpha, but a good man.
When Cade and his team rescue Bret as he's being carried on the river currents, something in Cade screams he's got to take this little guy home and protect him. Cade can tell immediately that something horrible happened to him, because even being dragged down a river during a flood doesn't leave perfectly spaced welts from the soles of the feet to the tops of the shoulders on both sides. Cade is furious when Bret recounts his last week's of torture at the hands of a wannabe Dom, Keith.
After settling in together with the beginnings of a strong and loving relationship, strange things start to happen, leaving Cade on edge and willing to do whatever is needed to protect Bret. It didn't take a genius to guess what was going to happen, but even being able to predict the drama didn't mean I didn't enjoy it. I was proud of Bret for gaining some courage, and I really liked seeing the whole team working together.
A fun, sexy read that reminded me of how insanely hot it can be to have your love be your everything.

So, often when I read fanfics with my favorite shows and pairings, I often enjoy a good hurt/comfort fic. They come in all types and this book, seemed to be in that vein. I thought, this sounds good. I was wrong. I only got to chapter 4 before I had to stop and say fuck it.
Things that bothered me: -In the beginning we're told how important the jobs they do are - going into dangerous places, saving lives, etc. Yet the minute Cade sees Bret, he's all fuck it, even though I'm team leader and people are still out there, dying and fighting for their lives in the flood I have to go home and take this man with me. Yeah. Okay. -"Little man" "little guy" and "pup" - used way too much, too often. I get it. He's a small - short, slim man (a twink?). Using is so much, made me think though, of not just a small man, but of a child and in an erotica book, that's a bad bad thing to evoke. Also "pup" - really? And it wasn't just used as an endearment, but in the narrative too. -Also "sweetheart" and "baby" being used so quickly. And from Bret - calling Cade "bear" - WTF? Where is this even coming from? -Cade doesn't know Bret, doesn't talk to him about things, but seems to know Bret is a gay man? He cuddles him and calls him sweetheart and caresses him (this is like within a hour of "knowing" each other). I thought the leap was pretty presumptuous on Cade's part. -They seem to be too close in too short of a time, with little explanation or reason. If this were a book with paranormals and mates, I could over look that, you know, with mating-heat/pull and all, but this is with people and it just seems...weird!
So after getting through 4 chapters, I realized I couldn't do any more. I think this would have worked better with shifters and mates. At least then, the weird dynamics would be explained in a way. Heh. As it is now I'm going to DNF this and pass on the rest. While it has some elements of hurt/comfort that I enjoy, it wasn't enough for me to over look all the other crap wrong with it.
This is the introduction to the Rescue For Hire series. In it we meet the team and it’s team leader, Cade. Cade rescues Bret from an abusive boyfriend and immediately “claims him as his own.”
It’s sort of a D/s relationship but not by any sort of typical rules. Bret lets Cade make most of the decisions until he decides to throw a fit and then he gets his way.
In this book Bret is thrown into trouble at least three times, and Cade must rescue him in his super-alpha-badass way. Bret is teeny tiny and Cade is huge.
I love this series and love this couple, but it honestly isn’t my favorite in the series but it’s still so much fun!
Darcy Stark narrates the entire series (so far!) and I really like his interpretation of the alphas and their mates in these stories.
If you like a very sappy, sometimes OTT romance where the alpha does a lot of rescuing but is in turned cowed by his partner - with a small element of D/s – this is right up your alley and I highly recommend it.
Overall book rating: 3 stars Audio book: Narrator - Darcy Stark 3 stars Book Cover: 3 Stars MC1: Cade Miller - Boss of the Rescue team MC2: Bret Jones - Captured victim Short read
This book could have been a 5 star if it was a full length book with more detail. It all happened way to fast.
I started this book fully knowing it was NOT a shifter book but the way it was written and the names that was used, I just kept waiting for someone to shift. First bear and pub it kind of sits in the back of your head "Shifter" and then there were the instant love MINE kind of thing that happend when Cade's eyes landed on Bret for the first time it just gave you the feel of shifter.
I obviously listened to this audiobook again, so I need to bump up the rating. I must admit though the story is unbelievable, I am fond of the MC's. Also, I did enjoy the narration a lot more this time around.
I see potential in this author so I will continue this series. I almost quit reading this book less than half way through. The longer I read the better it got. If the ratings for this book and the following in the series are anything to go by they do get better as the series progresses.
Overall book rating: 2.5 Audio Book: Darcy Stark: 3 Book Cover: 3.5
This one didn't do it for me. I'm sorry. It should have been interesting with the background of the psycho Dirk kidnapping and abusing Bret, and the flood and rescue was a really nice idea, but it just went totally cheesy, unbelievable and lighting fast in chemistry to be anything Non-brow-lifting for me.
The story idea had potential. The end result ...not so much.
I get kink. I get the whole "daddy/little one" thing so of course I thought yeah," bear/pup" is the flip side to that right ? That’s ok, I can deal with that. I was actually looking forward to it since I haven’t read any MM with that in the story. Oh boy. I was thoroughly disappointed.
So many things are wrong with the story, that there is no way I can list them all. Suffice it to say, it takes place nowhere, with people who didn’t exist until they met each other as they don’t seem to have a past. If one of the MCs wasn’t gay, well, he sure was by the end. The POV is all over the place. It almost seemed as if one sentence was one guy, the next the other.
Now don’t get me wrong, I know this is fiction. I love reading PNR so I’m ok with things being less than normal. But this was supposed to be “normal” people and there wasn’t a single believable thing in the whole damn book.
$3 for 59 poorly written pages. How in the world is this book getting such high ratings ?
Ok here's the thing, I like plot, and the characters, but the story is waaay too fast paced for my liking. And the time it took for Bret to get attached and fell in love with Cade was freaky! Even after all the abuse he suffered from not just one but two sadistic men. I get that it's only 59(?) pages, but for $2.99, I feel that it is way too short. And the change of point of view is kind of confusing sometimes. I would have enjoyed this book more if the author made it into a full length novel.
Instant Love y mucho sex. El libro se lee rápido son solo 70 páginas, así que no puedo pedir mucha más trama.
It was pretty much as insta love as you can get and Case always refrered to Bret as "the pup" or "his baby" in his head which can be a little weird during sexual scenes. Overall not bad, I think I'll try the next book but I don't know about the whole series
Welcome back to the "I'm sorry I clicked on a random book on kindle" and "WTF did I just read" series. I DNFed, but reading this was like watching a pileup wreck on a highway, with every paragraph more and more disturbing. The, ehm, 'bear' dude who works in rescue, 'rescues' a half-drowned/beaten/tortured young man from a flood, instead of taking him to a hospital contacting authorities he has a great idea to steal him an keep him in his home and treat him like his possession. The 'young man', and although I have missed how old he was supposed be, is referred to as 'pup''boy'baby' etc and has mental capacity of toddler and the whole thing stinks of pedophilia to high heaven. It's all very disturbing.
there's bad, and there's this book. the narration style was kind of weird and didn't make much sense. and what about that tattoo scene? never wanted a book to end so bad in my life
Why did I read this book? Don’t ask (I’m not sure myself)! The best part was the narrator, Darcy Stark. I was also lied to because it was clearly not a paranormal book!
Well, the author wanted to write sex scenes... and that's it.
There's really nothing much to the story. It throws away way too many opportunities to develop the characters and the story itself in favor of the smut.
Ok, so Cade saves Brett from a flooded river and bam! insta-love! Cade takes Brett home to heal, both from the injuries from the chaos with the flooding and from injuries that Brett's hook-up and the hook-up's boyfriend caused. When he wakes up, Brett is obviously scared of Cade and not prepared to trust another "dominant" man. Cade tries to calm him down, and... nothing. We skip ahead a week or two to where Brett completely trusts Cade and can only be calmed by his touch, instead of writing some kind of process when Brett slowly learns to leave his fear behind and trust Cade - which would have been much more interesting to read about rather than just being told "everything is okay now!".
During this time, I was constantly waiting for the shifter part of the story to be revealed, since it is called Bear's Pup I of course assumed that it was about a bear shifter and a young wolf shifter. That would explain the whole "suddenly - love!" theme, with them being fated mates and all. But no, they are both normal men, despite the whole "alpha male" talk and that Cade calls Brett "pup" while Brett calls Cade "bear", and the reader doesn't get any explanation to this. So, I repeat: THIS IS NOT A SHAPE-SHIFTER STORY. If you are looking for that, there are tons of other, and better, books to read. Sorry, just wanted to point that out to all of you who are considering reading this, since I found myself a bit disappointed at this.
Continuing with the story; it's a few days to a week after Brett was saved from the river. He is slowly recovering but can't walk by himself yet. He is drawn to Cade and after Cade warn him that if they start anything Cade will never allow Brett to leave his side. Brett agrees to this and they proceed with having sex. So, what now? Do we get to read about Brett recovering and adjusting to his new life? Do we see him meet the rest of Cade's team (except for Jack whom he already met) and getting to know them and realize that he can trust them as well? Of course not! Instead we make another time jump one month ahead and into another sex scene. Are you starting to see the problem here?
In general, the characters are way too underdeveloped and the story is barely there, more or less only forcefully thrust in when the author needed a conflict, and even then it's only brushed off. There is way more telling than showing going on and nothing is really believable. It was actually hard for me to get through this book since it never once tried to lure the reader into its world. On the contrary it felt like the the author made sure to do everything to try to push the reader away.
One other major problem, other than the already mentioned fast pacing and the underdevelopment of... well, everything, was the jumbled mess that was the different characters' point of view. You can never really tell who is telling the story of when the narrative switches between the characters. Also, Cade's possessiveness of Brett was a bit annoying, that Brett basically never got to do anything by himself. The constant babying almost makes you think of Brett as a small child, and that is a big no-no in a story that is basically all about the smut.
Though I guess if you're looking for a collection "Plot? What plot?"-sex scenes you might still like this book. Each to his own opinion, I guess.
Wow. It seems like a long time since I last read something so amateurishly written. I don’t even know what to say.
The viewpoints are a huge mess – even if you are into the head hopping style – since the author sometimes forgets to make clear she hopped again, sticking to personal pronouns only. And maybe this is supposed to be an omniscient narrator since even before Cade knows Bret’s name he already uses it in his viewpoint bits.
It’s doubly sad that the execution falls so short of its mark, because the intentions seem to be benign at least. It does focus a very specific fetish or set of conditions though. (Albeit relying on the tropes to fill in description instead of actually having it in the story.) Somehow Cade being insanely controlling is simply “dominant”, and there’s more than a strong hint of babying the bottom partner, what with all the lugging him around and his permanent place on Cade’s lap and so forth. I suppose I might be irritated slightly by the fact that whenever Bret opens his mouth to even faintly question or disagree with Cade, he is instantly fucked into submission. End of discussion. Yet Bret somehow loves this. As I said, a very specific kind of fetish. But really not mine.
But why am I even going into detail? There’s so much else, much more basic, that just doesn’t make sense due to the raw beginner’s issues.
I’m quite saddened by this outcome. I’d hoped for light (even super light), mushy reading. The author wrote so many of these books too! I wonder if they get any better. This might actually be a case where I am unable to find out because the writing is just so pointlessly awful that I don’t know how exactly to progress in the series.
I liked this book. I mean, it wasn't anything extraordinary and I actually enjoyed the fast way that Cade decided Bret was his. But there was something lacking. I was thinking about it, and I realized that during sex, the characters should be moaning or groaning, or expresing what they were feeling some more. I don't expect them to be screaming, but a little sound would be appreciated. It was so methodical and in order, without the characters' personalities developing much. Besides, the story was so fast paced and there wasn't much explained or described, that I didn't really have much time to enjoy this book. Generally, it's okay, easy to read in an hour.
approx 60 page story. Cade (bear) and Bret (Pup) story. Sweet story between the 2 characters. Horrible what Bret went thru before Cade rescued him and again what he suffered at the hands of keith before Cade rescues him again. Crazy Angle Ranch, Rescue for Hire, Granite County and Rescue for Hire West are all connected.
pup, pup, pup, bear, bear, bear. wanted more from the characters beside bear/pup. new series and I'm not sure if this works for me. read this earlier today only thing I remember is how annoyed I was with the repeated use if the bear pup dynamic.
