This is such an absolutely gorgeous book that is beautiful inside and out. It is a collection of mini stories about different goddesses from mythology around the world. I would say it is for all ages but particularly marketed at 12 to 16 year olds. However. I have looked at it with my 7 and 9 year old girls and they have really enjoyed looking through the stunning illustrations and reading some of the stories about the goddesses.
It is a glorious book that is empowering for children and gives them advice on how to overcome anything that may be worrying them. By reading about these various goddesses you relate their struggles to modern day life and find wisdom that can help you feel the confidence to overcome any mountain. You can find your own interpretation of each story too.
These goddesses all went through many trials and tribulations and the author writes about them in such a clear and concise way that makes it accessible to young girls and boys.
As a parent it brings me such joy that there are books out there like this for my girls. It can give them the confidence to stand up for themselves, to treat people with kindness and learn that you can overcome any battle.
The illustrations are some of the best I have ever seen in a book like this and it definitely makes it an even more immersive experience reading this wonderful collection of stories about women that are sometimes forgotten about in myth and who deserve to have their story told.
A book that I loved at twenty-one but wish I’d had at fourteen because I know it would’ve meant so much to me as a nervous, shy, emotional teenage girl who loved storytelling and mythology who was exploring new feelings and situations.
Each woman in this book acts as a ‘beacon of hope’ or ‘fountain of wisdom’- Jean tells their stories in a way that highlights how you may use their myths as inspiration for navigating your own life.
What I really loved about this book is not only that Jean added a page after each story about how she connected with each woman and how you could interpret their story but also that I ended up finding some of my own meanings within the tales as well.
I must also mention the gorgeous illustrations by Taylor Dolan! They really enhance each story make this a beautiful book to spend time pouring over.
Different myths leave different legacies and even all-mighty goddesses such as these go through hardships, toxicity, sadness, trials and set-backs. If you want some accessible mythology that highlights womanhood, sensitivity, kindness, power and confidence then definitely give this one a go!
*This book was sent to me by Hachette Children’s Books in return for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.*
AD/PR - Live Like A Goddess tells the stories of numerous Goddesses from all cultures and parts of the world. Each chapter focuses on a different one and finishes with what life lessons or inspirations we can take from their stories. It was an absolute joy to read and I learned so much I didn’t know before! This is the kind of book I wish I’d had as a teen, but as an adult I took a lot away from it too.
Full of positive and uplifting messages of feminism and power, it’s a must read for a whistle stop tour of goddesses around the world and through history. Packed with gorgeous illustrations, a stunning cover and beautiful endpapers (swipe to see) it’s definitely one for those who love a beautiful book inside and out!
"You don't have to be worshipped to be worthy of respect. You don't have to be a goddess to live like one."

As soon as I saw this cover, I knew I needed this book. It shows off some of the strong and inspirational women from different cultures around the world in a whole new light! Some are well known, others not so much but all just as inspiring as the last! I could easily read another 👀👌🏻😍😍
Wanted an easy read so went for a YA book. Where was this book when I was a teen! Learnt about goddesses from a range of countries and cultures and offers life advice relating to their stories. Makes me want to read more about mythology which is previously an area I had put off. Also loved the illustrations
Received a copy from Hachette Children’s Group in exchange for an honest review, so here we go ✨❤️
Rating: 5/5⭐️
Live Like a Goddess is a collection of short stories from 21 goddess from around the world. It’s an inspirational and somewhat educational way of telling their stories and what we can learn from them. I found this book touched so many different aspects of life, good and bad, and the author did so without any judgement and in a really beautiful, respectful way.
I initially read this as a proof read to offer to a 10 year old girl and in the end, I found myself fully immersed and in awe with this book. I would recommend this book to children and adults alike and I feel that this is a book that can be read throughout the different chapters of our lives.
This book is definitely an inspiration for young readers, teens and older teens. It not only inspires but provides advice and places they can go to seek more information or help with any similar problems they may be having.
The stories chosen are also lovely and the author does a fantastic job of relating them to modern day problems.
My only qualm with this book is that there are 1 or 2 spelling mistakes that I noticed (or should I say, grammatical - your / you're) and punctuation is not great at all. It makes any attempt at reading the book fluently quite difficult.
Aside from that, the book would've also been better if pronunciations were provided for a lot of the names in my opinion. As a lot of the goddesses mentioned are from Ancient Mythology, their names are difficult to pronounce.
I do recommend this book, not just for female readers but for male readers too. It promotes not only equality amongst sexes, but also teaches about boundaries, consent and self-respect; things which everyone can benefit from learning.
Live like a goddesses was just so unique and special to me and i loved it. i loved how jean Menzies told the story of 21 different women and how they all have different personalities and strengths and weaknesses. My favourite story was about psyche because she never gave up on life and she kept on going with challenges she was given. That's how all women should feel never give up on your dreams and challenges. i liked the style of writing with this book i liked how they were all short stories.i would definitely read more jean Menzies books in the future.
Even as a non woman, this book taught me a lot of valuable lessons. I adore any and all things mythology, so having these lessons be taught through stories of these powerful women? Amazing.
First of all; the artwork! Oh my gosh. I actually squee'd when I opened this first.
We'll come back to the artwork in a minute. I often mention in folklore reviews that when I was a child, we didn't have nearly the range of cultures published that we do now - generally you'd get Greek/Roman, Celtic and Norse, maybe some Egyptian. It's great to see that collections like this pull from all around the world nowadays - there's stories here from Polynesia, from the Americas, from Australia and Asia - it really is a global collection. Each story comes with a brief introduction at the start and a note at the back with ideas to help us be more like that goddess.
It's an interesting collection to read, as the stories about gods and goddesses usually present their problems as far beyond the mortal realm and too difficult for us to comprehend. Seeing them linked to human problems and emotions like this is really intriguing and clever.
Now, the art! The endpapers, with their stamp-style images of the goddesses, are the first thing that will catch your eye, but the book itself is heavily illustrated. There's a full page image of each goddess at the start of her story, the pages have frames and there are small pictures as well, including a symbol for each goddess at the end of her story, which I really loved.
This is a wonderful selection of stories to inspire any child, and hopefully it will encourage some of them to do further research into these amazing folktales and cultures. One of this Christmas's highlights for sure.
Live Like a Goddess is a fun and intriguing mix of mythology stories from around the world and personal development.
Each chapter talks about a particular goddess, tells her story, and relates that story to a kind of personal development message.
The stories themselves stood out as a highlight for me. They’re written well and are very condensed and short, so you can absorb the story quickly.
The personal development side of the book was done with intention, it was gentle and filled with good advice, but this advice was very surface-level. Each section was about a page and a half of almost post-it note-style advice that I would have enjoyed more had it been fleshed out and more in-depth.
I enjoyed the premise of this book, the structure, and, of course, the gorgeous illustrations. If you’re looking for a quick read you can pick up and put down, this is a great option.

What a delightful reading start to the month! The illustrations were great and suited the book very well. I loved how this was the perfect blend of mythology and self-help. Even if you wouldn't usually see that combination of genres, it worked seamlessly here.
I've been reading a lot of mythology lately, but I still learned about goddesses and their stories that I hadn't heard of before.
I really liked the international scope to this, and how the goddesses were chosen from all the continents equally.
After each goddess intro & their tale, we get a moral we could take away from the story. I felt like the life lessons were relevant and genuinely good advice for teen readers (and adult ones too, ngl).
It didn't shy away from the darker stories or the more intense but very necessary advice either, which is again: very good for this age audience.
i really liked the concept of this and loved the art within it. this is definitely one that i will be coming back to when i need it. Live Like A Goddess is a collection of stories about different goddess from different cultures, which i really loved as i got to learn about more mythologies. with these stories, advice is given on how to overcome modern life struggles and the wisdom you can find in these stories to help you. i loved the uplifting message of it and would definitely recommend this!
Un très bon livre qui permet de mettre en avant plusieurs mythologies et figures importantes ! C'est toujours sympa à découvrir, et ma permis de me trouver des affinités avec certaines.
