She argues with her mother. She occasionally skips class. And she alternately crushes on two totally different boys.
But Chloe King is by no means your typical teenager. The girl can scale buildings and see in the dark. Sometimes, at night, she even likes to leap from rooftop to rooftop. Yes, Chloe has the instincts and ability of a cat. And that makes her unique indeed.
It also makes her a wanted woman.
Because the Order of the Tenth Blade does not deal kindly with people like Chloe. It stalks them. Preys upon them. And wants many of them -- like Chloe, for instance -- dead.

Again, I'm not sure that I would be reading this series if the TV series hadn't ended on such an immense cliffhanger and subsequently been canceled by ABC. But as I read these books, I'm realizing that the plots of the book and TV versions diverge considerably, so indeed, I may never know what happens with the storylines in the TV series. It's interesting--the books tackle a much simpler progression of events and the characters really do take on a completely different tone. Again in this volume, the most striking diversion is the characterization of Brian (about which I won't say more due to concerns about spoilers). And I'm intrigued about the threads of internal Mai politics that have started to become apparent.

But could I really say that this is a *good* book? Not so sure. Entertaining. But even as young adult books go, there are better examples out there. I think this is just a case of a TV series getting me hooked and me feeling like I need a sense of resolution with the characters. I'd recommend this book only to actual young adults and it probably wouldn't be at the top of my rec list even then. Or to people who, like me, need a sense of resolution to the TV series.

Summary:

Following a run in with an assassin attempting to kill her, Chloe is whisked away to stay with the Mai. The Order of The Tenth Blade, however, is still out to get her and do everything in their power to draw her away from the other catlike people protecting her.
When her mother is kidnapped, Chloe unintentionally brings both The Order of The Tenth Blade and the Mai together for a long awaited battle.

Personal Opinion:

A great follow up to the first book with many new characters and juicy drama. The gang like groups was a good addition and added some exciting action to the story.
I am looking forward to seeing how it all ends in the third book.

Mai, mai, mai...
The Stolen is an amazing sequel in the Nine lives of Chloe King trilogy. Full of action, suspense, smart ass-ery, and the build up of an impending race war. This book had me turning pages as fast as I could during my 30 minute lunch break (the only time I actually get to read books these days) trying to find out what happens next. I love some of the plot twists that unfolded that had me double-taking sentences I had just read.
description
I love how much of a badass Chloe is becoming. Shit just keeps hitting the fan and she's like 'hold up I got this'. However, I am not digging the whole cheating and multiple guy thing. Love triangles are definitely an unfortunate archetype of Young Adult fiction, but the protagonist can have far more pressing decisions to make other than which guy she should choose. Other than that little hiccup, this book was great and I'm so excited for the last one, the unfolding war, and how Chloe will handle her new role as the One.
Bring it on!

Honestly nothing really happened in the first 100 pages. We got most of the explanation and then it was nothing. Also all these characters are so annoying. Like Alyec doesn’t care Bout anything but hooking up. Chloe cares but she then starts thinking about her love life. Any and Paul are kind of annoying and I didn’t like how we got chapters from them. This still is like fun though but cheesy and very early 2000s vibes.

DNF’D at about 50%

This book’s biggest crime was being incredibly boring. The characters are either annoying or flat. I felt no connection to the world. The plot had nothing to it. I hated Amy and Paul was bland. I liked Aleyc but Chloe liked the boring love interest more—even tho that relationship had 0 chemistry.

Chloe was a great character, and I really liked her, but one good character does not a good book make.

Life’s too short to read books you don’t like.

This one took a little longer to get through even though it was still a fast read. Extras meets Anastasia. I liked the additional POVs. Lots of continuity errors though that made it difficult to stay within the story. Overall enjoying the story, things are wrapping up as to be expected.

The first book was about Chloe King, the teenage girl, slowly learning about her abilities, boy crazy, high school drama and angst, plenty of swearing, and a quick fight scene at the end with a twist. This second book is more about Chloe King, the Mai, slowly learning about her past and her people, still dating 2 boys, locked away from her friends and mother, dealing with political intrigue between factions and who she can really trust, and another quick fight scene at the end with a twist. Less swearing this time, and we get more answers on what all is going on with the Order and the Mai, but it was kind of a slow read.

I'd still recommend young adult readers (college, not high school) even though the characters are HS age, mostly because of the still-present swearing, violence and hatred for different peoples, and the fact that she's pretty much cheating on 2 guys the whole time and no one ever mentions how messed up that is.

Have you ever come across those series where the first book makes you think, "Hmm, this is going to be good!" Then you pour through the second book and just sit speechless for a bit?

Yep, that's what happened to me this weekend. I recently finished reading The Fallen, the first book in The Nine Lives of Chloe King. I was left wondering after that book so went and found the second book. Just as the first was, THE STOLEN, the second book in this series, was a quick read and packed with enough action and emotion to make me lose myself completely in the story.

The Fallen introduces us to Chloe King, our smart, spunky, and slightly feline heroine of the series. She discovers within the story that she is a member of the ancient race of the Mai, and feline race whose existence has been recorded since the time of the ancient Egyptians. Hunted by the human assassins, The Order of the Tenth Blade, Chloe discovers that her life is in jeopardy shortly after discovering that her new abilities exceed simple cat-like reflexes.

Continuing the story in THE STOLEN, Liz Braswell explains more about the Mai and their history. We get to learn who they are, where they come from, and what has happened to the mighty race within its recent history. Schooled in Egyptology herself, Braswell really gives the story a lot of color and realism with the ancient myths. If I had to pick one thing, that would be what made THE STOLEN a complete winner for me. It was perfectly evident that Braswell did her research and the way she explained and incorporated the ancient Egyptian gods made for a brilliant book that was not only easy to follow, but addictive as well.

Going beyond simple introductions to Chloe's life, we see the action kicked up a notch within the pages of THE STOLEN. Now we discover that there is more behind The Order's need to slaughter the Mai. More than that, it seems that darker plots arise around Chloe, making life even more dangerous for her and the people around her.

New characters and new scenery add an interest factor to the book that is sure to keep readers entertained throughout THE STOLEN. Sometimes with a series, even though the story may be good, reading about the same characters in the same settings book in and book out can get old. While not completely throwing us into a different world from the one we were accustomed to in The Fallen, Braswell, does change THE STOLEN up a bit, adding newer dimensions to keep us attached.

As I've mentioned in my review of The Fallen, this series, The Nine Lives of Chloe King, was picked up by ABC Family and will be premiering on that network June 14th. Along with many others, I was one who thought the previews looked fantastic and then only later discovered that the show was based on a book series. If you're one of those people who enjoy reading the books that go along with a show or movie, I suggest picking these up. So far the story has proved to be fascinating with just the right amount of drama and otherworldly feline awesomeness.

Again, if you are looking for these books online, you may need to look under the author name Celia Thomson. The combined edition (three books in one) comes out in June under Liz Braswell, but previous editions were published under the name Celia Thomson.

A continuation of my tv and book series comparison...

- the Mai portrayed as an organization with real means, money and manpower compared to the tv version

- Alyek depicted as the protégé (or being groomed) to be the next in line for the leadership compared to the tv version where he is following Jasmine (Valentina's daughter). Valentina and Jasmine did not exist in the first two books yet.

- Kem could be Chloe's sister. I like her being so different from everyone else even the Mai's. I also like the way she explained things to Chloe. She doesn't exist in the tv version.

- Chloe's agreement into staying with the Mai for the time being, "federal witness protection program" which was very different from the tv series

- a Mai kiss alone will not actually kill a human compared to the tv version that will kill a human after one make-out session

- history or legend of the Mai was explained in more detail. The history of the Order of the Tenth Blade was also explained and reason of their name was given light by Kem to Chloe. These were not really given too much importance in the tv version.

- too much teenage alcohol drinking (beer, vodka, wine, bourbon) in the book. I'm glad it wasn't like this in the tv version.

- the hunt was interesting but not really needed on the tv version.

- Chloe's mom was kidnapped by Brian's dad. It could have been in the second season if the tv series wasn't cancelled just because of how it ended on the final episode.

- Brian knew how his mom died, about the Order and he's even part of the Order. I think I like the tv version where he was totally unaware of his father's involvement with the Order, he did not know how his mom died and he was able to find his grandmother with Chloe's help.

- I like Chloe's destiny in the tv version, her being "the Uniter" and not just as the book version's "the One". I also like the tv version that she is the only one who has 9 lives and not most of the true Mai leaders as in the book version.

- I like the Sergei ending twist, he has a hand in the killing of the previous leader's daughter who could have been Chloe's biological sister.

A quick summary of the book:

THREE STARS!

This book started out slow with boring and unnecessary events that I didn't get why the title was The Stolen.

One thing's for sure: I liked this book BETTER than the last book. When I reached the pre-climax, I couldn't stop reading. I was like, Damn, this book is insane, man! (yes I quoted Hamilton) The events started to tense up and the story gets more complex!

One thing I didn't like, however, was Brian's "love for Chloe".

I don't know, it seemed too soon, and he's a really nice guy but Chloe could be a total meanie sometimes, and he doesn't deserve someone like that but I guess his romance fits the storyline.

Well, that's... tragic. I would pick Brian over Alyec anytime, but I wouldn't want Chloe to end up with Brian. Well, maybe if this was the tv show I'd love them to be together but here in the book? N. O. I hated the way she referred to both of them as her "two boyfriends" like okay, that's some Alyec material but NOT FOR BRIAN BECAUSE HE'S TOO PRECIOUS FOR THIS WORLD YOU STUPID LIONESS.

The last chapters, I LIKED THEM A LOT because of the thrill and suspense and how Chloe somehow became not much of a meanie anymore.

ALSO, THAT EPILOGUE WAS THE CREEPIEST BUT STILL THE BEST! Not only is Chloe fighting one army of enemies, but now she's fighting with two armies who joined forces just because of their personal reasons which include killing her! (You'll find out which is the other army soon)

I can't wait to read the third book! I hope it doesn't disappoint!

P.S. I liked this:

I did not finish this. I don't know, it was just too slow for me. I mean, the premise of the book is about this girl that discover she is part of an ancient race of feline warriors and that a secret order wants her dead, and everything was extremely dull. For starters it takes her an entire book to discover what she is, the first book is basically just to explore her powers. This second one there is close to no action and she is secluded in this location and is basically just to discover the history of her race.
For something that I was expecting to be extremely action packed, it was just boring...

I wish I could say that I liked this series but I just can't get into it which is odd because I really like the TV series.
The Chloe in the books is nothing like the one in the TV series, in fact none of the characters are. Maybe if I hadn't watched the TV series first I would have like these books more. As it is, I doubt I will be starting the last book anytime soon.

Okay so this is my second review for the Nine Lives of Chloe King trilogy! So I’ve said before this book is sort of a wattpad esc read, and so along with all the good written parts and good story being told, there’s also some contradictory stuff written and plot line that doesn’t quite work well for me.

Like for some reason this love triangle with Brian Alyec and Chloe? It’s really dumb. Celia Thomson writes as if 1) it’s perfectly normal for a girl to date two guys, one her age and her species and the other out of highschool and human which would kill him since their species are not compatible.
2) going off that last line, Brian can’t even date Chloe since her saliva is poisonous to him. It seems really strange this is considered a love triangle book.

I should give credit where it’s due however, as the actual plot line with Chloe being Mai and the feud with the Order is very fascinating and good. I still want to root for Chloe to win, and finding out Sergei isn’t as good of a “pride leader” as she thought is pretty cool.

This story is a very conflicting read for me since I really want to like it, but there’s so many things that just are a little strange. Look forward to the final review for the third book. Overall a 3 1/2 star read.

WOW the main character Chloe King in a trilogy called The Nine Lives of Chloe King has nine lives? I am shooketh.

For the most part I felt like not very much happened in this book and whatever happened was pretty predictable. I did enjoy the backstory of the Mai and learning more about their past though. But come on the moment Chloe fell from Coit Tower we knew she has more than one lives or cannot die forever or the series called The Nine Lives of Chloe King, and then when Kim told her about how the One has nine lives it was pretty obvious for the reader.

Despite not much happening in the book and being predictable, I enjoyed the writing style. I went through the book pretty fast and it was just an easy read and fun. Also cats. I love cats. Leaving Chloe's totally badass scene during the final battle aside, I wish more things happened. Idk I think so far the show did it a tad better. We'll see the final book. I am excited for it since now Chloe is basically Pride leader and I can't wait to see all the intrigues and action.

I wasn't able to give my opinion on the first because I had really mixed feelings. I couldn't decide if I liked Chloes' character as well as Amys'... plus I thought that the relationships were kinda rushed like you don't see a man and immediately fall in love with him. The only one I seemed to really like was Paul. The second book was quite better, but still, the relationship part lacked a lot. We finally see some great characters, like Kim or Sergej, but after reading another book of the series I have to agree with someone comment and say that Chloe is quite selfish and puts everybody at risk. Why does she have to treat Alyec like that, he genuinely cares about her while she lies and plays with him?! I will be reading the last book of the series, but if something isn't going to have a major turn this is going to be another "broken" fantasy series.

PS: I love how the show developed the plot, so sad there is only one season.

I'm just going to copy my review from the first book, since literally nothing changed in this one:

Egh. Okay. So this wasn't terrible, as far as following along and being interested with nothing else to do on a 5-hour flight.

But that being said. What is the point of this book? Why do young adult novels feel like they have to delve into conversation about breasts and sex and periods and skipping class and drinking as part of some societal norm? Ooo, okay, so Chloe's a cat. Person. Thing. Got it.

But what else is actually the point of this novel besides her hormones and the need to jump on every guy that she sees?

This was recommended by someone when I said I enjoyed the Shadowhunters series, and this is nowhere near the complexity or writing quality of that series. Ugh. I mean, a good read if you're really bored on a flight, but otherwise pointless.

Soooo, I forgot how frustrating and unlikable the main and supporting characters are (especially Chloe) - I would however say that I enjoyed the chapter with Anna King’s perspective and am fond of Kim. On the negative side, it really pissed me off how almost every mention of Kim had the word ‘freak’ in it.

To be honest this book could really be something if it were properly fleshed out or had this been run through an editor. There are too many errors not just in the writing itself but also in plot building and character work - the story and mythology if fleshed out well would have done wonders.

First, let me say that this was significantly better than book one. While I feel that some of the emotional attachments moved too fast, I did feel a lot more for the characters and appreciated how they came together. However, it did take half the book before I was really invested, but once I was it was good! The writing is still pretty basic, but the story got better. I’m hopeful for the third book now.

It was interesting: more lore, more context, new and intriguing characters, a few plot twists, and some predictability.

The pacing was a bit slower, and it wasn’t as funny as the previous one. I still wish there were more details and references to Egyptian mythology!

But I’ve noticed a pattern—almost every second book in a trilogy tends to feel a bit more “meh” than the other two, so I’m fine with that, I guess.

Unlikable characters who point out others flaws on a constant bases. The “weird” characters are the only likable ones but I think I felt more bad for them than anything. They seemed to care and actually think things through while everyone else is mean spirited.

There’s not much of a plot as well so you spend most of the time with these horrible characters.

Better than the first, this book is starting to develop the supernatural side of things and the plot focuses on that (instead of how many boyfriends she has.) Although it definitely took us long enough to get here. There was even a twist I didn't see coming. An easy, fluffy read overall.

Twilight meets Buffy, you have Chloe King. Lol which is why I love it. A guilty pleasure read that is fun & young. This sequel is exciting & perfect for setting up the last book. I loved all the new characters, & storylines put in place. Can't wait to read how it ends.

While the first book in the series and the short-lived TV show went along closely, this book takes Chloe and her friends deeper into feud between the Mai and the Tenth Bladers. I enjoyed this book and am into the third book of the trilogy.
