In Ivy Pierce’s world, Greek mythology is reality. Sirens, like herself, use men for money, power and status; but she has the greatest gift of all. Stronger than any of the Siren’s before her, Ivy’s attraction alludes to a prophecy that could mean the rebirth of Greek gods and goddesses for our modern time.
The Fates believe she is the symbol of a new era. Her mother believes she is the key to ultimate power in their Greek circle. And Nix, her godfather and god of the sea, believes she belongs to him.
Ivy doesn’t want any part of her world or the people that demand so much of her. With the help of Ryder Sutton, her closest friend, she will fight against fate, against the expectations of her society and against the desires of a monster that will do anything to possess her.
And through it all she will deny her feelings for the one person she loves more than anything in order to protect him.
While her future crumbles around her, Ivy will go to extreme lengths to free herself from her glass prison—or drown trying.

OK, WOW. The last half of this book just blew me away. And thus has made it sooooo hard to decide how to rate it. B/C the run to the end was solid 5 stars for me. But my problem comes in that for giant chunks of the first half, I was kind of bored. I think it was a personal taste thing. There's a lot of time spent in Ivy's head while she describes her emptiness, or her love, or her rage, or well, just about everything. But it got to be too much for me, and a bit repetitive, so it kind of lost its magic there. I think I was kind of influenced too b/c on a re-read of The Rush I felt the same thing (lots of beautiful prose, but that's never been a huge draw for me in writing, especially if it feels repetitive). But I have to caution readers that feel similarly to me -- KEEP READING!!! B/C once it picks up, OMG you will be so glad you hung on for the ride.
I love how the story picks up a quite a few months after The Rush. In other series that might have bothered me, but I felt it was all very seamless and didn't feel that I missed out on anything, just got to advance to the next big hurrah kind of thing....if that makes sense. And seeing the "platonic like" (yeah right) friendship that had developed between Ivy and Ryder was just dream come true territory. They have SUCH amazing chemistry, and while Ivy's struggles over whether she can't live without him, or if she's a horrible influence on him got to be kind of tiring, I *really* felt their connection in this book so that balanced it off. It was so nice to be given so many moments of pure happy to balance all the crap going on in Ivy's life.
There is a LOT more paranormal in this book than The Rush, and I really LOVED all the little tidbits of Greek mythology that was mixed in. And so many of them were a huge surprise. Of course, that does also mean that I was left with a bit of confusion and lots and lots of questions that I hope will be answered in The Heart. I did find that the number of new Greek characters and information could be a bit overwhelming at times, but that was really only in this one party part, so it didn't last long.
LOVED the Fates. And by loved I mean Hated with a fiery passion. Like seriously, creepy much? But yeah, they were a great new addition.
LOVED the development with Ava, and while I could see that things were being hinted here and there, I did NOT see that coming. I really enjoyed that twist.
LOVED (in a horrific kind of way) the storyline with Ana and Eva. I think more than anything else, that just ripped my guts out. I had a feeling how that was going to go, and I wasn't wrong, but it was just laid out beautifully. (on a side note, LOVED the craziness during Ivy's distraction....makes me want to know more about why that all is, etc).
LOVED Exie and Phoenix and the fact that they all had been hanging out with each other for the past few months....so glad that those girls got some normal in their lives.
Didn't think I could hate Nix more than The Rush, but oh holy hell do I want him to die a fiery death full of torture and badness....give me that god-killer, I'll do it. He really did turn from human nightmare into paranormal nightmare supreme (now available at taco bell).
And the climax battle....so epic. I still felt really confused about Ivy's powers...or whatever that was...but the things Ryder said....the...Ohhhhh....perfect...heartbreaking, but perfect. (and yes, I know that that didn't make any sense)
And the ending just left me feeling hope, letting me breathe and anticipate the dramatic conclusion. Oh November 2014....you are so far away.
So yeah. 5 star epic 2nd half -- such a refreshing addition to the paranormal series out today.
Okay, so I caved far quicker than I would have liked and bought the second book in the series because I have an obsessive personality… Damn it!
To be honest this book would really have had to have been drastically different from The Rush for me to dislike it, and as it happens I loved this book just as much, if not a smidgen more than the first book in the series. I found The Fall had more of a pace to it with lots more going on and a plot that actually felt like it was moving towards somethings. I was thrilled that this was the case in this book (especially as so many of you seemed to have issues with the slower pace of the first book) and having gotten to know the characters and having the scene set vividly in The Rush I was so pleased to delve into the plot more this time around.
I just cant seem to stop harping on about how much literary love I have for Ivy and Ryder. Ivy is strong and weak, smart and resilient, vulnerable and closed off, and better yet she is a complex character that manages to hold all of these traits without being annoying. Ryder is equally as complex in the way that he is protective but encouraging of Ivy to find her own strength – which is how I like my heroes to be. A woman shouldn’t find her strength in someone else but rather the other person should help her to find and build her own strength. Ryder also has a bit of otherworldly mystery going on with him in The Fall which doesn’t hurt my love for him! Rachel creates a hero and heroine that are completely balanced and deserving of each other which is something that should be celebrated!
Just like in The Rush I do have to admit that I had a really hard time reading some of the scenes that took place in The Fall as the intensity of the paranormal sex slave storyline progresses. Something I’ve been mulling over is how I read through these scenes and didn’t stop reading the series altogether (it is a well known fact that I can’t stomach a lot) as I’m very sensitive to lots of ‘dark’ themes so I don’t read them – until now. There have been other books in the past where I have come across themes similar to those in this book and I have turned away from continuing to read them, so I had to ask myself why could I stomach reading The Fall? I eventually came to the conclusion that it is because of Rachel’s writing and my investments in the characters.
I also appreciated the development between Ivy and her mother as well as the increase in Greek mythology used in this book. And there are some really important messages about the ownership of ones own body that really shouldn’t be missed here. I really can’t wait until I can get my hands on the final book in the series (I feel like it might be marked by another squealing session that my partner will have to endure at some point) and I have high, high hopes that it will complete the series with a bang.
**I received this as an ARC, in return for an honest review.**
I would say this would be 3.5 stars, but I'm giving it 4, since I did enjoy the last quarter of the book immensely.
To be completely honest... I just couldn't get into this book. I like the story. I like the interaction with the characters. I liked the dialogue. What I didn't like, was the overly descriptive sentences. The "his smile was like...", "the wind blew like...", "his breath smelled as...", "the air felt like..." (those are just examples, Rachel wrote them much better than that). A few would have been fine, but to me it felt like it was every other sentence and it was just SUPER hard for me to get into the book because of that. I found myself always glancing down at the bottom of my screen hoping I was almost done with the book (but I was never even close).
That being said - that was the ONLY part I disliked about this book (and I'm sure it's just personal taste on my end that I didn't enjoy it).
I LOVE Ryder and Ivy's relationship. I loved how it blossomed throughout the book and how they finally accepted it and what happens to Ivy when she is in weird situations and remembers his love. It's like he's her other half and they belong together, do doubt.
Getting to know the other characters better (Nix and Ava) was a huge plus... and a creepy plus. Because let's face it, Nix is creepy and evil... and I want to punch him in the throat so hard.
From 60% onward this story sucked me in. I couldn't read it fast enough. And that's when I fell in love with it (which made me SO freaking happy!).
I don't want to spoil anything for you - so let's just say: Nix is EVIL... throat punching evil... Like, you could kill him now, Rachel, and I wouldn't mind at all. Ryder is amazing. Ivy is the strongest, bravest girl ever. Ava is.... a surprise. Smith is caring... and another surprise.
And yes - the second to last chapter, is heartache written at it's best. But the last chapter... it's peace. It's perfect. It's comfort.
I'm excited for The Heart and for the conclusion of this story. I just want Ivy to be completely free.
This series is really everything right! I feel for Ivy's siren song in the first book and the spell continues to weave it's magic in The Fall.
Ivy is such a compelling character. She is both the troublemaker and the victim. All her life she was groomed to be a villain and to destroy the lives of people around her. It's a life she is expected to embrace, but it's a life that is slowly killing her. Ivy fights daily to keep a part of her soul alive, but the machinations of Nix and her mother makes it's increasing harder. Ivy finally has hope in the form of Ryder, he gives her the peace, clam and love she so desperately needs. With Ryder in her life, Ivy finally has something to live for and she refuses to bow to Nix's and his evil Schemes.
Nix is such a great villain. You love to hate this guy, but you find nothing to love about him. We find out that he is the God of the sea, and will stop at nothing obtain his powers and to take over Olympus. His obsessions over Ivy, is all about power and control. She is the one person that will allow to return to his former glory. We truly see Nix true nature when he sees his hold onto Ivy begin to slip. He will destroy everyone that Ivy loves in order to possess. But the harder Nix pushes, the harder Ivy pushes back.
And can I say that Ryder is totally swoon worthy in this book. His love for Ivy knows no bounds. He refuses to let her give up and gives her the will to live everyday. He is her rock, the one person her understand Ivy and is willing to give everything up to set Ivy free. My favorite thing about Ryder is his willingness to stand up against Nix. No one has ever tried to protect Ivy and he is willing to lay his life on the line to do it. Ryder's defiance against the status quo, helps Ivy to never lose sight of the ultimate goal.
WARNING: This books is packed full of messy feels & really dark shit. Like DARK. So dark that I’m hesitant to say that I ‘enjoyed’ reading it because that seems wrong. There is some really hard to read, horrible, horrific scenes that are not ‘enjoyable’ but I will say that this story is incredible & written in a way that makes me super immersed & invested & I NEED to read more & if Rachel Higginson doesn’t give me a happy ending I am writing her a very strongly worded letter.
The feels are real; Everything about Ana & Eva, that scene with Nix, Sam *actual tears*, the fight, when she sees him before she leaves *shakes hands at the sky & shouts “I can’t even handle these feels”, or something like that*.
I mean I so really want some people to die. Like horrible, gruesome deaths.
Also on a separate note I love stories based on Greek Mythology so I am loving that we’re getting more of that.
I've always had a fascination with Greek mythology so this series has been absolutely amazing. I love how Greek mythology has become intertwined with the modern world
Everything Rachel Higginson writes is golden YA material and I always absolutely devour it. I read the first book in the Siren series a long time ago (or so it seems) and I remember loving it and feeling so anxious to get my hands on the next book. When The Fall was released, I was excited but I'll admit that it took me a little while to fully regain my memory of the storyline. And what an impressive storyline it is...
Ivy is a beautiful teenage girl who happens to be a Siren. She is basically enslaved by a man named Nix, who happens to be the Greek god, Poseidon, and loves to manipulate and hurt her. Ivy has lived a lonely life without ever really knowing love or stability for most of her years. As a Siren, Ivy has the curse of making men fall madly in love with her, an act that eventually leads to their death. Luckily, Ivy has Ryder, her best friend and the only male she knows that is able to resist her powers. Ivy and Ryder try desperately to keep things in the friend-zone, but they both love each other deeply. To sum up the plot line concisely, The Fall essentially revolves around Ivy and Ryder's blooming, yet forbidden romance, and a brewing war between the Greek gods--a war in which it seems Ivy will play a major role.
This series is a lot of fun overall, but does have some heavy elements such as abuse and loss. I can't wait for the third book (and if I'm not mistaken, the final book) in the Siren series... I just hope that one book is enough to bring this awesome story to a close.
Enjoyed the two books but I am not much into a cliffhanger ending. Both books so far is about the underdog getting beaten. I wasn't happy about not seeing too much of Ivy's siren power. So far she only sang once and some white lights that was useless in defending herself. I gave this 3 stars because I got tired of her be beaten down through out both books and how she was powerless. It got a bit repetitive on how much she talked about how Ryder makes her feels. Also, I wish Ryder was able to escape with her. Overall, the story line is engaging and it pulls you in. I just felt that the ending could have been more of the potential of Ivy being able to kick butt. I recommend this series but expect the bad guys being on top all throughout the first two books. Book two would've been awesome if Ivy had more power and Ryder having power too. I jus felt like Ivy was portrayed as weak in that she can protect herself. Too wimpy forme. I will read the next book though because of the captivating storyline.
This book wasn't for me. If you're into Greek mythology, this might be a good fit for you.
There were multiple spelling errors, missing words, punctuation mistakes, and incorrectly chosen words. Also, the plot seemed liked nothing happened, nothing happened, nothing happened, then suddenly everything was happening all at once. The author dials up the Greek mythology is this book with a whole new host of characters, but the amount of stuff Ivy gets away with in spite of Nix's apparent tight control just left me feeling like he wasn't a real threat until the author decided she needed him to be.
Definitely loved how the author made me feel for each characters, their heartbreak 💔 ❤️🩹, their sadness 🥺, their pain and everything they were experiencing. When I was either reading or listening 👂 to this audible book, I was happy 😊, sad 😢 , OISSED OFF 🤬🤯, but truly 🥰 ❤️ it. I like the turn this series has started to go in and I'm interested to see what happens next. Definitely recommend this series and can’t wait to start the next book now….
I am finishing the second book in the the series. The first book was a slow start for me, but I am glad I kept going. I have enjoyed the reference to Greek Mythology and modern day. I do feel that Ivy (lead character) is slightly whinny and dragged out. I have about a quarter of the book left and thing are slowly picking up. I wish things would have not been dragged out and slow. I wanted to see Ivy more powerful a little sooner.
I enjoyed the continuation of this series in The Fall. The Greek mythology gets to be a little much in this one but it’s still a really good book. The ending is a little frustrating but I have hopes that the third book will remedy those frustrations.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Fall is a PHENOMENAL continuation of the Siren Series. Time has passed since the end of The Rush. It's summer now, and Ivy and Ryder are closer than ever. However much Ivy tries to convince herself that they are "just friends", they are more than that. They are more than just friends. They are more than best friends.
We start off with Ivy's seventeenth birthday. Nix, her twisted godfather (and, oh yeah, POSEIDON!), has an elaborate party for her. We learned from the last book that Nix is a controlling and demanding tyrant, but that still doesn't stop Ivy from ditching Nix's birthday event to hang out with Ryder no matter what the outcome will be when Nix finds out. From then on, the book is a full of twists and turns as Ivy continually battles to break Nix's hold on her, fights for her freedom and the freedom of her friends who are oppressed under the same force, and learns shocking truths about people in her life that she never would have guessed.
What I loved most about this book was that despite everything that was going on in Ivy's life, she was still so strong. She didn't give up. No matter what Nix demanded of her, she kept pushing against the boundaries and fighting to be free.
And I think an influential part of Ivy's strength was found in Ryder. His strength gave her strength. She learned from him that she wasn't trapped in a life she could never escape. She had a choice.
My favorite quote: I promised to let him rescue me from every day forward. And I let him promise to hold onto me forever. As long as we had each other, I could fight hell and I could survive.
Wow! Don't know how Rachel does it, her stories are unimaginable, and pull you in so far when your reading. You become part of her mystical ,magical worlds. Right from the start you are pulled into this mythological world. The Energized , super charged connection of Ivy and Ryder thrum through these pages with heat. As much as the pulse pounding fear shakes each page as Ivy struggle with Nix. Ivy carries a curse an ancient curse, and after meeting the "Fates", they have only confirmed that Ivy carries greater powers. The secrets and mystery's are unfolding about who Ivy is and what she is capable of. But which path will her fate choose to take her? If Nix ( Poseidon) has his way, and the ownership he claims of Ivy is made his, his goal is Olympas with Ivy by his side. Ryder is intent on saving her from her evil world. He is her savior, her calm place in the storm that is her life. But what is more is that she has hopelessly fallen for him. Ivy will protect Ryder at all costs, but Ryder will protect Ivy at all costs. And there is more to Ryder than we know. After a devastating dose of reality with her older friends, she see's now the evil that Nix is capable if he is crossed, if she runs. Ivy clues her friends in on her plans but will they be strong enough to follow? She desperatly wants to save them from this world as much as she wants to flee it. Time is ticking away, things are escalating, Can Ivy save herself, Ryder and her friends. You won't want to put this book down once you begin.
A truly fantastic book. I felt like the series really picked up with this book. There is a lot more action and we also got to see a lot more of Ivy's character. A lot more information about her powers and her place in events that are leading to a war between opposing sides of the Pantheon was also revealed. The story was well-written and paced fast enough to keep me reading. One of the things I really loved about this book was that Ivy finally acknowledges her love for Ryder and it is this love that finally gives Ivy the courage to stand up to Nix and set herself free. I loved the last battle scene where Ivy realises that no matter what Nix does to her physical body he can't touch her soul. The only thing I was gutted about was . Anyway, like I said before this book was great and I can't wait for the final chapter of the series to be released. I'd definite recommend picking up this series - even if you didn't enjoy the first book so much - if you stick with it and read The Fall too you won't regret it.
This was a highly anticipated book for me, from one of my favorite authors.
I have to say this book does NOT disappoint for many reasons - from near perfect editing to the story line this book was an emotional rollercoaster, for the right reasons.
This book picks up sometime - maybe a few months? - after the first book and it seems there's some progress in Ivy's relationships with..everyone. There were some surprising moments for me, I totally didn't see them coming, but I think the author did what she had to do. Greek mythology plays a bigger role in this book, which was a bonus for me (I'm a huge fan).
The main plot point still centers on human trafficking, a difficult topic but one that needs to be addressed seriously, so kudos to Ms. Higginson!
The only drawback I had was I felt that Ryder's importance was repeated a tiny bit too often. That said, I think Ivy has grown A LOT in this book and I do see why Ivy keeps repeating her 'Ryder mantra'.
Cannot wait for the conclusion - The Heart (I think) later this year!
I am honored to be a part of Rachel's team and received an ARC of this book for an honest review. I simply devoured this book; I read it from start to finish in one sitting but had to wait to write my review until my brain and heart processed all that happened.
Bottom line - Rachel is a writing genius! This book, oh this book...twists and turns, shock and awe, romance and defiance, heartbreak and truth - it has it all! Ryder (oh, how I LOVE Ryder), Smith, all of Ivy's allies/friends will make you cheer while the villains will make you cringe/shutter/sit breathless in fear. I thoroughly loved every word and despite the fact that I now need a support group I'm telling you that this series is worth every penny! I promise you will love it! Now I just have to be patient and wait to see that The Heart has in store for us!
So in love with this series, I thought book 1 surprised me with it's uniqueness but book 2 has surpassed that as well. Things I love: romance, mystery (we've learned more but there's more...), Greek mythology (in a totally different way than you've read it and alive today), the other relationships, the strong characters, unique story line you can't figure out, everything else...
I've been waiting for this 2nd book to come out for so long but it was definitely worth the wait. Thank you Rachel Higginson for another great story and book hangover!
Oh. My. God. This book was fabulous. There is something about the story line in this series that just pulls at me. I loved The Rush and have been waiting patiently, or impatiently, for its sequel, the Fall. It was definitely worth the wait. Ivy and Ryder... Watching them fall more in love was amazing. Nix.... oh Nix... watching him become more evil was not as fun. I literally just finished and my heart is a little broken. The final book will be out in October, but I'm not sure I can wait that long. I absolutely loved it!!
The stakes have been raised. The gods are showing their true colors & Ivy thinks *a lot* about her guilt, her self-pity, her fear, and her unending love for Ryder.
This does feel like a complete story, but it also reads like a bridge between books 1 & 2. Stuff happens: we learn more about the Greek Pantheon, get teased about Ivy's powers, watch her relationship with Ryder grow. But, there seemed like a lot of filler narration where Ivy processes her feelings.
I couldn't put this down once I started. Shocker right? Rachel really shows us some of the power that the old gods still have in this. I knew going into this that I would more then likely come out having cried a little from the struggles that poor Ivy has to go through to be stronger and I was right. This was so much better then The Rush in the fact that we went even darker into the crazy world of sirens and gods. Loved it and can not wait for The Heart.
I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review. The Fall is soooo much better than The Rush. After reading The Rush I wasn't sure about the series. Yeah, I really like the Ivy/Ryder 'ship but the whole Nix possessiveness garbage just drives me completely nuts. I love the resolution at the end of The Fall and the hope that wasn't present at the end of The Rush. Definitely looking forward to the next book.
I like this book the relationship between Ryder and Ivy is getting intense. She is letting go and being defiant. I like that she has found her courage, Or finding it. The relationship at home is horrible and kind of gross . I feel sorry for her mother and her friend's. This book ended badly I wish that it was different but what can you expect. I hope the next book is better than this one and gives me what I want ... a really happy ending ( she deserves it)
Gah...Gah...I don't know what i feel or what i want to say!! Just so many emotions are reeling. Nix, I hate him just as much as Ivy...a definite villain. I love Ivy and Ryder...they have so much chemistry between them...it's like this awesome fantastical romance. I love getting lost in that. I am really anxious for the next installment. Like...on pins and needles!!
