Kyotaro’s broken arm means that he can’t exactly do a lot of what he’s used to, but Anna is more than willing to use that chance to get a little closer to him. But Kyotaro and Anna have one unfortunate thing in common and it’ll take some growing up if they’re ever going to get past it…
The aww-inspiring antics of Anna and Kyotaro continue and, while they aren’t making a lot of movement this volume, we know where this is eventually going. It’s really just a question of how much they’ll screw it up on the way there.
Being open with people brings the possibility of hurting and being hurt. That’s just a fact of life, but dealing with that while you’re young and accruing a pile of hormones that will slowly drown you in other thoughts besides what’s for lunch is not easy.
And it’s clear that Anna is more physically developed than Kyotaro, but the extent of this becomes slightly more obvious this volume when his voice starts changing. It’s a perfect use of puberty as a storytelling device, but also something that so many manga could have used that I’m shocked this is the first time I’m seeing it.
This story has thrived on dealing with complicated emotional immaturity by showing how that can eventually grow to something like maturity and it’s why this manga is so captivating. There’s been a real, painful progression over time, especially with Kyotaro. His turn from not liking Anna to liking her so much that he thinks he’s not good enough has been well portrayed.
Yes, it is full of cringe, but it’s cringe that shows two people falling in love who can’t quite put themselves out there to let it happen. Anna is scared to death of the people who love her no longer doing so, but Kyotaro can barely handle the idea of putting himself out there. The number of times he bottles what he wants to say because he hates himself is depressingly believable.
And there are also the messy social mores and the fact that Anna and Kyotaro occupy very different spheres. Which means absolutely nothing to Anna, but Kyotaro is acutely aware of constantly. None of which also takes into account the dreaded blending of the genders - this has one of the most awkward chocolate baking scenes in manga history.
It’s a good, fun time. There’s a lot of cringe (there’s that word again!) this volume and Anna gets hurt again and is really obvious again and Kyotaro is accidentally hurtful and apologizes and all the dramatic stuff you’d want from this ongoing train wreck.
Moeko turns out to be exactly the wingperson that Kyotaro needs, but even her shrewdness only goes so far when Kyotaro’s second visit to Anna’s house goes from awkward to more awkward to absolutely super awkward because a little white lie to save the day only saves the day if people know it’s a lie. The way Kyotaro occasionally steps up really makes his character so much more than he started as.
I guess the big downfall here is that the movement remains very, very slow on the dating front. There’s a certain sameness to this, which bugged me enough to prompt a second skim through the pages, but this gets the balance of heartfelt to teenagers being dumb (I’d love to throw Adachi through the wall) and the agony of adolescence pretty much bang on, even with the occasional focus on literal boobery.
5 stars - know how I can tell when I like a book? When I have stuff to say about the characters and am not reliant on hashing out what was good about plot points. These two are a messy pair that it’s hard not to want the best for and that’s a good story right there.
This Manga series is a sweet take on juvenile love, how it’s not so different from the love we carry into adulthood. It’s funny and a nice awkward twist from the usual tropes seen in young love mangas. Excited to read part 6, July 18th!
I love this series. The two MCs are fantastic. Seeing them grow, mature, and develop is a treat. Yes, it is a bit campy at times but it also feels very real and genuine at other times. The humor also hits very hard at times. I laughed out loud on several occasions with this one.
From going to her home, to admitting when he made a mistake, to not wanting to lie, to meeting parents, this volume is so dang cute. Helps I'm watching the anime with the wife and we're having so much fun. I NEED MORE!
it has its ups and downs but overall keeps on being light-hearted for the most part, which i love. also, i've started loving ichikawa, even if he's a failure for most of the volume.
They make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside when she clumsily wants to take care of him; when awkward misunderstandings arise. Some scenes, however, are not always easy to understand.
