It was a pool party at the neighbors' house. A little get-together with some of their friends. People I didn't know. That was OK. Just six couples. I noticed that. Everyone but me was a couple. My hosts told me it was a requirement. The thing was, I was single. And sixty years old. But all the guys here looked to be about my age. The hostess, Toni, gave me a funny look. "Jeff, given that this is couples only, and you have to have a wife to attend, meet Connie Claire." Toni turned around and looked behind us into the house, and I turned to see what she gestured toward. "Jeff, meet your wife. This is Connie Claire. Connie Claire, this is Jeff Delaney, your new husband. If you want him." I looked at the girl across the room. She was beautiful. And smiling at me. But her smile was... intelligent. There was something behind her eyes that almost didn't match her blonde hair and very attractive body. I didn't think blondes were necessarily stereotyped in any particular way, but this girl was... surprising. I was instantly attracted to her. But she had to be a lot younger than me. I was sixty. This girl was in her thirties!
I've read every book Ms Foxworthy has on Amazon today. I've been waiting for this one since I finished (I think) the Nogud series. Reasonably, it reminds me of No Monetary Value in some ways.
It's written in her loquacious, philosophical style, with the same sort of relationship dynamics. While most of her books sort of popped into place early on, it took a while to get into this one. Same went for NMV at first. Once I did, of course, I was drawn in. By the end it feels more like the first book of a trilogy in and of itself, and I'm curious to see if it breaks out of Honest Attractions
She takes the poly/harem-as-multiple-aspects that's disclaimed in many of her prologues and adds the reverse in this book. The idea that the "husband" to more than one woman would be a different husband to each, based on their needs, seems like fair play. It also opens up the women to more individual development.
There were the 80s culture references like Brass in Pocket (which was technically 70s but close enough), the policy of sexiness, Max Du Pree, and some hints at connections to other story lines. I knew there was something interesting about Dana, for example, but it ended up not being what I thought it would be. And I wonder if Jeff's wife had any connection to Nancy.
Submitted For Your Approval was a welcome and long-awaited break from the fast I had to take from Foxworthy's writing. And while I'm still hoping for more from a couple of her other series (okay, all of them, but especially Barsoom and Nogud and Nymphs and maybe Girls on the Hill), I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
An enticing exploration of permissiveness well contrasted with other mores
The book starts with an excellent rhythm as the interesting ideas are introduced. The reader is kept captivated as the author skillfully creates the context and reveals veil by veil the nature of the affair that falls upon the main male character. After the breath-taking first part of the story, the author completes the work thoroughly with the progressive reactions of the comprehensive character cast to the consequences of living with permissiveness as principle. Many funny passages and as always with this author well-mastered intimate sections fully necessary to and embedded in the story. For improvement, the relatively advanced social/professional level of the characters was not well used, more sophistication was expected, which could have made the story even more funny and high-spirited. In sum, a nice read, just a touch boring at the end.
Marilyn, you just get it, I love you! Your mind is perfect! I bet the rest of you is also. Life is not, all sex and humping, nor is it pursuing and conquest. Most times it is understanding and giving. I am 73 years old, I am now with my 3rd wife. The first gave me children, then betrayed me. The second gave me unconditional love, was my soulmate, then contracted cancer, passed away and crushed my heart, I still love her. My present wife had a similar experience to mine her husband passed, we met consoled each other and now live a loving life in total understanding and appreciation for each other, she is 65 years old. Life, is full of surprises you never know what your gonna get. But every time I read one of your books, its as if,I know, you get me. Thank you. Rich.
---Spoilers--- As a preface, I get the lesson(s) the author is trying to impress from the book. But, I still found the book pretty confusing at times and just lost. More than a few times during reading I literally lost the plot of the book. Like, "Where is this going?" I had a grasp on the end point during those times but was very confused on the pathing to get there. I don't that the book was bad, I can honestly say it needs more than a little polish, especially with the scenes later in the book with character interactions happening. But for the most part I did enjoy the book
I previously got tied up in a Foxworthy series and decided to not get caught up in another. She is an excellent storyteller but when I finished reading this book it was like I had just eaten a great fried eggs and toast breakfast. However upon finishing I realized that there had been no jam for my toast, beacon or OJ. This book was well written and the only error I noticed was use of the word “two” to mean “also” instead of “too”. Unfortunately, once I started reading this book it was almost impossible to stop until the end of the story.
I will admit that this story was confusing at first. But the further I read in, the more I understood the aim of this complex storyline. It is just wonderful, it pulls you in and causes me to think and be mindful of the wonderful situations in the story. I will be reading this over and over. Finding new nuggets of thought each time!!
I decided that when I die I want to come back as the main character in one of MFs stories. I love the philosophy in the dialog in these. No tramatic drama but enough turns and twists keeping the story going. I will keep following the author and eagerly await the next installment.
In this story a retired man is invited to a party and is introduced to a woman as his wife. Many amazing things happen with multiple women in the same household. I enjoyed the story.
My first reading of a Ms Foxworthy story. I loved it, if there was 600 more pages it still would be too short. This was a happy discovery type story I will read more of her work
the guy is just dumb, and a simple straight forward honest (which the promised to do) question from about 30% in would have solved the whole book, so it was a worthless story just to add word count.
