Blood and Moon #1

The Fear of the Dark

Rate this book
Once the sun sets, the city of Grander comes alive with the undead. In the darkness of the night, forbidden love emerges.

Asher Black and Nikola Kingston are sworn enemies, each loyal to opposing sides of warring vampire covens. Manic and dangerous, Asher rules with an iron fist. Stoic and reserved, Nikola is devoted to his creator.

When the two vampires are assigned to spy on one another, Asher finds himself obsessively drawn to the hulking and sulking Nikki Kingston. Meanwhile, Nikola can't get the other vampire's lithe body or the taste of his scorching blood out of his head.

Games were fun, but this was war—Nikola Kingston was the enemy.

More than one kind of border separates Nikola and Asher. Has fate doomed them to destroy each other? Or will they betray their gods and their covens to answer the attraction burning between them?

Where is this going to end? In blood or in sex?

The Fear of the Dark is a slow burn, dual POV dark romance between two male characters intended for adults. For information regarding triggering content, please visit the author's website. I think this was a 4 star read, but I got 5 star enjoyment out of it, and the fact this is a baby author literally blows my tits off, because I have read some FUCKING AWFUL books lately from well established and well-liked authors, and this book completely gave me a feeling of joy that those other books COULD NEVER. 👏

I really look forward to what this author produces, and I need book 2 like I need oxygen and books with dicks in them. And soon, or I will pass away...

I can't even explain the plot or anything, because I'd need a fucking diagram, some brain processing power and a clue, and I don't have any of those right now.

The only reason I would say 4 star read, is because I did want SLIGHTLY more from the sexual encounters in this book, but there was a lot of hesitation and fear around it, so it makes sense that they weren't as spicy as they could have been.. Bring on the spiccccccccy in book 2 🙏🙏🙏🙏

There is also a lot to take in, in this universe. I was often confused, but just went along with the flow and enjoyed myself along the way, I feel like it's worth it, so work through it people!! and in the end I was absolutely frothing every second of it, and the ENDING.... 🤯

Nikola and Asher got me like:

Also, a moment of silence for my self-respect when I realised they had a 672 year aged gap. Um hello? Let me death roll with these men for the love of god... how does one stay appropriate on the internet? Because i'm not sure I know how anymore... fictional men will be the death of me.

Buddy DNF @73% with my bae Brooke who can explain why this did not work for either of us much better than I can!

What it comes down to though is that this book was simply not for me. The narrative style just wasn't working for me at all, and I found it impossible to connect to either of the MCs. Then there was the world building which was unnecessarily EXTRA, and worst of all, at 73% I felt as though the dubcon (yucky sires) was more pervasive than the whatever "romance" up until this point! Umm sorry? Where's the love, precious? Thanks, but no.

I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

We tried.

I know, I know. Why did I dnf so late in the game, with only about 30 minutes to the finish line?
Short answer, I was bored.

The author really tries to sell you on this intense rivalry between Nikola and Asher, this huge dichotomy between their worlds and their beliefs, their opposing views on what it’s like to be a vampire. But really, all of that just made it harder to feel a connection between them. They were constantly fighting, yet there was no animosity.

The politics of their worlds overshadowed the possible romance aspects of their relationship. What little is shown of their blooming love story is continuously interrupted, lacked passion and feelings.

I also don’t understand why there is a need to make vampire lore even more complex. I, personally, don’t have the brain capacity to learn a new set of rules, new sub-species of vampires, new powers, new hierarchy, new everything. Just give me blood-sucking, night crawling, old school vamps.

Almost at the ending, and I couldn’t care less of the war between their lords, of the weird dynamics with said lords, or if they get their happy ever after.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

I’m still a bit shooketh by the ending. I didn’t see it coming and I’m gagging for the next book 😭 so so good!

I loved this fresh take on vampires, the world building was thorough without info dumping. I liked that you gradually learned about it throughout the book without being bombarded with lore in the first few chapters.

I loved Asher instantly but Nikola grew on my over the course of the book. He’s a bit stiff and takes longer to understand/get to know but by the end I adored them both.

Some amazing side characters in this story. I loved Nikola’s housemates and everyone at the tattoo studio.

The story was beautifully written with a lot more maturity than you usually get with debuts. I think this author will definitely be one to watch.

But also if I could have the next book in the series, like tomorrow? That would be ideal lol.

Okay this was so fun!! Rival vampires from different groups sent to spy on each other and end up in weird do I want to fight him or fuck him?! vibes. 👌

Was I confused by the world building/vampire politics for a good chunk of the beginning? Absolutely. But I rolled with it and near the end I was starting to get it (maybe?). I don't know but I need the next book ASAP because that ending?!?! Are you kidding me?! 🤯

Nikola is our stoic, somewhat grumpy, old AF vampire. He absolutely does not know what to do with Asher but can’t help being drawn to him. I loved seeing the progression of his feelings - from reluctance and mistrust to romantic and protective. *sigh

Now let’s talk about my man Asher. What an absolute chaos demon. If a character is a sassy little shit I will immediately fall in love. And Asher was giving me life. Sad boy with a heart underneath it all. He deserves the world and I can’t wait to see him get that 🥹

The characters all feel fully fleshed out (even the side characters - shout out to my main gal Veronica). And I cannot for the life of me predict where this series will go which is so fun. I am so invested!! This was a fantastic debut novel and I can't wait to see what this author has up their sleeve for us.

Well, what to say about this debut novel?

First of all, thanks to the author for this arc. The first time I saw this book on Goodreads I knew I wanted to read it based on the cover alone, then my bestie started reading it too and loved it, so I had to read it as well.

At first, I was a bit confused about what was going on, it's always either weird or random or confusing when you start a fantasy book and have to immerse yourself in the worldbuilding, and this book was no exception.

Having said that, I just decided to not be annoyed about the million questions I had about the mythology and the characters' motivations and just roll with it, this proved to be the right decision as it allowed me to enjoy the story for what it is, a story, which if I might say, it's very compelling.

You can definitely feel the push and pull and the tension these two guys have towards one the other, Nikola certainly comes across as the typical sad/hero and Asher is the misunderstood grumpy boy, which based on what we read of his backstory makes all the sense.

This book is not perfect but it is very entertaining, and I will most certianly read the sequel because WTF was that ending?

Happy publication day 🥳

THAT ENDING. HOLY SHIT.
damn.

Thanks, booksiren, for the arc!

I had so much fun reading this. I needed some vampire (I always want more vampire tbh) and this delivered.

It's told in dual pov, one side is Asher, a vampire following the blood god, meaning that they kill who they drink from. On the other side, Moon goddess follower Nikola, his kind drink blood but don't kill !

Their paths intertwine because of territory law, and their bosses wants to gain information about the others.

I must say, I'm hooked. I cannot wait to see where book 2 will go after that ending !

The plot was intriguing, I'm curious about so many things and tbh I can't wait for some characters to hopefully meet their ending.

Nikola and Asher relationship was one of mutual obsessions turned into more, and LISTEN I LOVED IT. GIVE ME MORE.

Anyway add this to your tbr asap

OMG where to begin?
THAT book is just 🤯 A-MA-ZING !

This is not the typical vampire MM romance you see out there, this is a very good vampire story with an add-on the ennemies to lovers gay couple !

The story telling is impeccable 👌🏻 I was submerged and captivated by it from the first lines and the world building/politics is just outstanding !

I’m super picky with my vampire story and this one is just gold itself.
I love the facts that there is two types of vampires, two parts of the city, a whole hidden hierarchy and soooo many politics and plots to gain the High Throne !
I have so many questions that I’m sure are gonna be answered in the rest of the serie.

Asher, the bratty blood follower is so much more than the bloody ennemies from the other side, he is so much more than a killer. I really enjoyed having his back story and be able to see his vulnerability.
My dear Nikola is this grumpy “old” man that had lived for too long and has been deceived by the world to many times, I loved that how he opens up in the story more and more. His background was super interesting as well and I’m sure we will have more in the next books.
Their romance come little by little and it just makes so much sense.

Every single characters was super well made. Veronica, Francis, Katsumi, Diesel are just my new favorites gang. Even the “bad guys” like Riccardo… I’m so invested in putting him in his place haha I just can’t wait for book 2.

And the plot twist ?! 🤌🏻😮‍💨 Brilliant. I didn’t see it coming !

Big up to this author ✍️ for the amazing work she has done on that ! I had “interview with a vampire” vibes the all times between medieval time and contemporary. I really had a great time.

I’m bored, a bit confused and this has turned into a chore so DNF @ 46%

I don’t have any feelings towards the two main characters. I kind of get the world building but am still a bit confused about what a moon child, a blood follower and their gods thing is all about.

Maybe I need to read more- but I’m nearly halfway and I just haven’t connected with the characters so I’m going to stop there. They haven’t made much progression with each other so I’m afraid I’m out.

Sorry.
I feel bad but this book just isn’t for me.

We meet Nikola, who is a Moon Child. Over 700 years old, he has lived to see a lot and is currently serving under Lady Morrigan.
Asher, a fairly young vampire and a Blood Follower serves under Lord Malkolm as his second in command.
What happens when two vampires from opposite sides have to pretend to play nice with each other while trying to gain information for their leaders, while also lusting after one another?
Their story was so well done! The world building is fairly easy to understand and the plot is so intriguing. The balance between plot/romance was perfection!
The main characters have such depth and personally I am Nikola’s biggest fan! He was a slight grump but that’s how I like them.
Asher although young and a Blood Follower, is certainly more kind hearted than he wants everybody else to know.
After a lot of push and pull between them and plenty of outside dilemmas they try to find a way to be together and BAM cliffhanger!
The side characters were also extremely interesting, the plot twists unexpected!

Absolutely cannot wait for book two🥹

“And, Asher Black, even if I were to sacrifice my own morals and abandon my Goddess, I still could never bring myself to smite you down. I would be killing a part of myself with you.”❤️❤️❤️❤️Nikki, you romantic you!!!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book didn’t work for me. It had its moments - like can we talk about how devastating Asher’s back story is? And it certainly is intriguing (the last 20% was 😳). But the world building has me super confused. I got a little bit more familiar with some vampiric differences by the end but there’s still a huge question mark there for me. It was also WAY more slowburn than I was expecting and ugh I hate slowburn 😂

This is also book one or two, I think. There’s definitely more to come but I wish it was all one standalone. I think it would have made it more enjoyable for me, because I likely won’t pick up book two.

Still, if you’re in the mood for MM vampires with a unique concept (because it is unique - even if I fully didn’t grasp the world and the lore) - I recommend this one. It’s also fairly short and can likely be read in a sitting or two.

This book reminds me of The Vampire Diaries (but make it gay) in the best way. The two main characters give off the same vibes as Damon Salvatore and Elijah from the originals.

Asher Black is a blood follower who is a vampire who feeds to kill. He is reckless, strong and will literally take on anyone. He's rebellious and ready for anything.

Nikola is ancient, he is formal and has his own moral code. As a moon follower he only feeds to sustain himself and never kills. Though he is strong he chooses to remain passive and is a diplomat.

Their worlds collide when Nikola is granted access to the blood followers part of town and Asher has been tasked to keep tabs on him.

This is very much a true enemies to lovers, slow burn romance which is well written. This book also has spicy scenes which I think are definitely put in the right moments and not overly used.

The ending of the book really took me by surprise as it left on a massive cliffhanger. I'll definitely be picking the second installment up when that gets released too.

This book? Absolutely loved it.
It's written well, and very engaging, with an amazing plot and a brutal cliffhanger (which just leaves you wanting to read every next book...)

The characters mentioned are so complex, that I cannot help but applaud Alex Vale for coming up with them and their stories. Both Nikola and Asher have so many demons and history of their own, seeming very different yet somewhat the same.

There are some trigger warnings to be noted, but what do you expect of vampires that are basically immortal? Lots of blood. And, well, hot bloodsucking? Never mind the question mark; It was pretty intriguing.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone in search of a vampire MM romance with an interest in enemies to lovers (which cannot go wrong, of course)
This is Alex Vale's debut book and I am looking forward to everything that's next!!

This is my #1 TOP PICK of the Year. Words cannot describe the intensity of The Fear of the Dark. The writing is top-notch, beautifully and seamlessly transporting you the dangerous city of Grander where, oddly enough, a love story blooms. Nikola and Asher are all you've ever wanted in main characters, both individually and together. The tension and intimacy are spot on and the prose makes it truly the best book I've read in 2023 (I had the privilege of Beta Reading Books 1-3 and they do NOT disappoint).

Both characters are well developed, deep, complex, broken and secretly yearning for that missing piece that is the other.

ALEX VALE is a MASTER storyteller.

It does end with a cliff-hanger so you HAVE, HAVE, HAVE to read Book 2 or your soul will feel incomplete until you do!

Cannot recommend this book enough. 6 STARS!

4.5 Que final.
First of all I loved Asher's personality, his sassiness made me laugh every moment.
We have Nikola, a son of the moon, who despite needing blood to maintain himself, does not kill people, and on the other hand, Asher, a son of blood. They are from opposite sides but they have the same mission to make the other change sides.
The author gradually led us to want these two to go from enemies to lovers, feeling the chemistry and the internal struggle that both have to not let themselves be carried away by their feelings.
They are both powerful in their army but they also share the loneliness and sacrifice they make to their respective masters, which I have to say the one I understand the least is Corvellious, because when he turned Nikola he was more affectionate and seemed like he really cared.
Contrary to Malkolm, he is the typical sadist who wants to possess everything beautiful and unique that he finds. And Asher had the misfortune of running into him.
And the end. It left me with my mouth open, I need to know what will happen with these 2 and especially with Asher (you can tell that he is my favorite character).

Nikola Kingston is a Moon Child though he's alienated by other Moon Children. He hasn't killed nor plan to kill anyone anytime soon. Not even young, psychotic Asher Black and his sociopathic self. He's a Blood Follower and second in command to the Lord. So he's Master Asher but "none of that formal shit especially when you have your cock in my mouth Nikki."

They're both tasked with spying on each other and to convert from Moon Child to Blood Follower and vice versa. But along the way, they both warm up to each other though Asher will deny it. Until the end when feelings become involved and he's okay with that.

Asher’s left eye, kissed by scar tissue, gleamed revitalized scarlet, a ruby with its own eternal light. But the right eye… A silver disc, a speck of captured moonlight. Asher Black blinked the heterochromatic eyes up at Nikola, unaware that he now carried both the marks of the Horned One and the Moon Goddess.

“Nikola,” Katsuki said, their sword falling to the floor amidst their astonishment. The steel echoed in the heavy silence of the apartment. “What have you done?”

Yes Nikola, what have you done?

Plot: ⭐⭐⭐

Tension: 🌶🌶

Recommend: Oh yeah baby. It's amazing and I love Asher.

Alex Vale debuts a dark vampire romance that will have you craving for more.

This story follows two male adult vampires. An elder vamp named Nikola Kingston, a Moon Child vampire, and a younger Blood Follower vamp named Asher Black.

Nikola Kingston gives off “I’m a loner but not lonely vibes.” Something that I can connect with. Like, you have the selected people you’re willing to spend time with but you prefer being alone. I like that he tries to stay true to himself and his beliefs as serves his sire. It’s a difficult task for him and it only gets harder when Asher enters the picture.

Now, Asher Black is the character that brings the spark in the book. He’s a jokester, especially when it comes to Nikola, but he doesn't take any mess either as second-in-command of his coven. His coven leader, Malkom is wild for what he put him through after he was created.

Now, let's get down to the nitty-gritty. Nikola and Asher gave me all the feels when they shared scenes. Nikola provided a safe space for Asher, and Asher provided space for Nikola to “let his hair down.” Even though the story is a slow burn, I enjoyed watching Nikola and Asher’s relationship develop until their true feelings about one another surface.

Towards the end, I think my heart rate spiked. The plot twist and cliffhanger left me speechless and with questions. I know it’s going to take a minute for Book 2 to drop but I need it ASAP!!

Couldn't put this story down, had to read it, page to page. The story of Nikola [Nikki] and Asher Black. The Horned one and the Moon Goddess. This story is fascinating and not like all those other vampire stories. No, this story goes deeper. Actually the epic story about good and evil. Light and dark. And who will win. Both Nikola and Asher have enemies. Empower enemies. But also friends, like Katsuki and Veronica. I can't wait for book 2. Highly recommended.

The author, Alex Vale, skillfully weaved a slow burn forbidden romance between two people who follow opposing deities. Their relationship is complicated mesh of tension and intimacy that questions the very essence of fate and loyalty. This book definitely kept me refilling a cold glass of water. Wow what can I say? Honestly such a good book! The idea of 2 different types of vampires is genius and adds a new concept of vampires. Love both of the main characters.

This is well written with a great twist at the end that I did not see coming. The spicy scenes weren't overdone and were just enough.

Honestly cannot wait to read the next one!

“If I betray you, I betray myself. If I betray him, I betray my country. My country is very dear to me.”

“Dearer than I?”

“No. No, not dearer than you.”

THIS IS LITERALLY WHAT ASHER AND NIKOLAI ARE GIVINGG!!! (this is not a quote from the book. I believe this quote is from "Dangerously Yours")

I loved Nikola and Asher’s slow-burn relationship; their push-and-pull dynamic made for a very satisfying read. I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s writing style and how he crafted the characters. Asher, in particular, was such an intriguing character, and I loved his backstory regarding his early years as a vampire.

My main criticisms lie at the beginning of the book and the resulting lack of engagement with it. The beginning was a little confusing, and it took me some time to get used to the world. I also found it slightly difficult to fully immerse myself in the vampiric world of Grander throughout the first 20% of the story. However, I’m certain I will have no problem feeling engaged with the second book because the cliffhanger at the end left me wanting more. Crossing my fingers that I'll be able to read the second installment!

Final rating: 4 stars.

2.5⭐️

I’m honestly not completely sure why I’m so ambivalent about The Fear of the Dark. There are several bright spots, interesting characters/dynamics and intrigue, but for me they didn’t all come together satisfactorily. I understand the whys of some narrative choices/plot progressions but don’t feel like the execution always hit the mark.

What's interesting:
- the variance of vampire types and the influence of the gods they serve.
- the different limitations and consequences for lack of feeding for the groups.
- Nikola: his conflicted allegiance, his conflicted and confused desire, his steadfast hope and resolute faith. I wish there was a bit more about his coven mate Francis and his deal, but I’m assuming this and Nikola’s seeming indentureship will be explained in the next book.
- Asher’s backstory on how/why he became a vampire and was shaped into the weapon he is and his eventual conflict.
- the MCs emotional arcs
- the potential new conflict alluded to and what it could mean to the faction leaders who are so busy squabbling for control, they might miss the fact there will be no city for them to reign over.
- Katsuki

What’s pretty meh:
Nikola and Asher’s situationship. I find it interesting in regards to its creation bc Nikola can’t tell if his feeling are real or based on his empathy or if his empathy rooted real feelings in him, but I just wasn’t invested in their coupledom.

What's dissatisfactory:
- Even though I felt for Asher, for some reason I couldn’t really get invested in him; I get what the author is going for regarding his behavior, his conflicted bond with Malkolm, and his unwanted connection with Nikola but certain scenes and behaviors felt off/try hard.

- Asher’s stupidity. For all the reasons he has to be and is paranoid; for all the reasons he can’t trust anyone; for all the reasons for caution about his growing attachment to Nikola; for all the reasons he should have mentioned the eventual problem to Nikola; for the EXTREMELY powerful reason he should be worried about a said problem and it’s avatar, the end happens the way it does? Huh? This plot development is so contrived. There’s no amount of “he’s off his game/shaken up by Nikola” that would make this feasible.

- the “plan” to convert Nikola—seriously, the plan was to infuriate him into joining? The only reason it had even a remote chance is bc of his convenient and quick connection to Asher based in the aggression they need. Nikola is a warrior and has been for at least 3 decades, I’m expected to believe that attacking him will make him mad enough to be open to the Blood God? Really? I have to assume this is part of a test.

- The fact that the actually tenable plan is suddenly presented at the end. Again, I can only assume that Malkolm didn’t suggest this first bc it is part of a test, but even then it makes no sense since Malkolm has no reason to doubt Asher’s allegiance. Do all Malkolm’s seconds-in-command get tasked with some impossible challenge to test their resolve? Is Asher tested in this way bc his rules are seen as too human? Is this some convoluted plan of the High King?

There are quite a few positives that would make this a great story; unfortunately, they didn’t hit hard enough for me. Maybe a second read would leave me with a better experience and connection to the characters, but as it stands, I feel so disconnected, I don’t care enough to finish the series.

Teeth, claret and politics

This book by Alex Vale is dark with lots of action and teeth. There is also lots of politics between the different factions and I must admit that as much as I enjoyed the Romeo/ Juliet type of situation that was keeping the two main male characters apart I found that the politics was a bit much for me. There were flashbacks to different points in various characters pasts that sometimes added to the story but were mostly bad things happening. Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood? I found that I just got confused.

Ooh I love a vampire story, and I really enjoyed this debut novel from Alex Vale. I love a fluffy vampire story, yes, but I also love it when things get dark, and they certainly did in this story. One unique aspect is the two different types of vampire - Moon children and Blood followers. Both worship different gods, and as such, have different qualities of their un-life. Moon children are much more peaceful, biting for pleasure, and they don't need to drink a person dry to feel satisfied. On the other hand, Blood followers are brutal, their bites are painful, and they can't feed without killing their victim.

Enter Nikola and Asher - a Moon child and Blood follower respectively. Nikola is over 600 years old and is dedicated to the Moon Goddess, despite being an enforcer for a group of Blood followers in Grander in exchange for asylum. He serves Lady Morrigan and his sire, Corvellious - a Moon child turned Blood follower after going on a revenge fuelled rampage many centuries ago. Asher is a young Blood follower, turned a decade ago at the age of 18. He is the definition of chaos and certainly has some sadistic tendencies, maybe some mild form of psychopathy. He had a hard upbringing with conservative parents and bullying, which led him to walking the dark streets with the intention of suicide by vampire bite. Unfortunately for him, things don't quite go to plan, and he finds himself in the unforgiving arms of Lord Malkom - basically, an abusive tyrant.

For some strange reason, Nikola finds himself permitted to roam the once forbidden territory of Lord Malkom, under the watchful eye of Asher. The Blood follower has been tasked by his master to convert Nikola from the Moon Goddess to the Blood Demon, just like his sire was all those years ago. Nikola may look calm and peaceful on the outside, but Asher is determined to break through his walls and uncover the rage he must be hiding underneath. And he might as well fuck him while he's at it, right? Even if his master doesn't approve, right?

They're totally different characters - representing dark and light - but Nikola ends up discovering much more light in Asher than the other way around, and they end up falling into each other's trap time and time again, if only for the reason to spend more time together. Asher tells himself it's because of his mission, but deep down he knows he enjoys Nikola's company more than he's letting on.

I really enjoyed this story - it was different than a lot of vampire stories out there right now, and the cliffhanger we were left with at the end has me salivating for the next installment. I think the ending got slightly chaotic in a short period of time, because so much seemed to happen in only a few pages. I found myself having to re-read a line or two, just to double check I hadn't missed anything. Maybe if this was spread out over a few more pages (or another chapter) it might have had a better pace. However, that doesn't take the fact that the ending really threw me through the ringer. There was a lot of bombshells dropped on the characters AND the readers before leaving us gagging for more.

The only thing I was left wanting to know more of was about Nikola and his reason for needing asylum in Grander. It's mentioned a few times that his sire has had to save his life on more than one occasion, but we don't really dive deeper than that. This doesn't detract from the story, and as it's an unfinished series, I'm just going to assume for the time being that this information will be provided later, and it doesn't impact my review in any way.

Well done to Alex Vale for creating a fantastic slow-burn, enemies to lovers vampire romance. I'm really, REALLY looking forward to reading the next book!

This was more like a 3.5 but not quite a 4. It wasn’t bad, and there were things about it I did quite enjoy. I liked the difference between the followers of the Moon Goddess and the Blood God, I thought that was a fun, unique twist on traditional vampire lore. I did feel like it was shoehorned into nearly every chapter of the book to the point that it almost became distracting, though. There was *a lot* of repetition about how the abilities/appearance/ideals differed between the two species. Yes, they’re different, I got it the first 50 times you said it.

The Romance: This was fun and I like the main pairing, but I felt like there was no real animosity between them that gave it that true enemies to lovers vibe. They were antagonistic with each other from their first meeting, but it came across as being more flirty. That, in itself, is fine, I like the flirty, annoying, frienemy love interest as a trope, but that’s not what the book presented itself as so it left me feeling a little disappointed.

The Characters: This book was dark, but that’s what I signed up for, so in that regard it didn’t disappoint. Asher’s torture and brainwashing/sexual exploitation at the hands of the lord felt very on brand for an ancient, greedy, power hungry immortal creature, and despite not being bothered by this myself, I can understand why some readers might shy away from that kind of content. I feel like it gave me some context for why Asher behaved the way he did, though, and shaped him into a more relatable character. He originally kind of annoyed me, but as more of his past came to light, some of those quirks that I found bothersome suddenly made a lot more sense. I was able to feel empathy for him and that made the story more enjoyable. I would say the author did a pretty good job with all of their characters; I found them to be dynamic and interesting in different ways. I understood their motivations and even if some of the choices they made seemed monumentally stupid, at least I knew *why* they were making them.

The Plot: Without spoiling anything I would say the plot felt pretty convoluted, and even though I did read both books I think there was a lot that was left unresolved and felt sort of hand-waved away. There were threads of story that I expected to lead somewhere that just sort of…ended abruptly, as well as some others ideas that could have been very dramatic and engaging but felt underwhelming in the way they were executed.

All that said, I did enjoy it enough to read both books and the 2.5 novella. I liked the two main installments well enough, but the novella read like fanfiction and I really did not enjoy it.

Overall the two main book were a good way to waste a couple lazy afternoons laying on the couch. If this author wrote more books I would give them a try.

It’s not a bad book, but it’s not particularly good either. I’ve just finished reading this one and its sequel, so something kept me hooked. However, there were many moments where I questioned if it was worth continuing or if I should have just put it down and moved on to something else. There are definitely some red flags here.

The main premise (don’t worry, no spoilers) is that vampires exist and are divided into two types—Blood and Moon—each with its own patron/god and special abilities. Blood vampires value strength and power, while Moon vampires cherish life and control emotions. The story takes place in a U.S. city where the majority of vampires live, split between two clans maintaining a delicate balance. Nikola, from the Morrinson Clan, is granted permission to dwell in Malkolm territory, which gives him an opportunity to spy. There, he meets Asher, the second-in-command, and their story begins.

It’s not a groundbreaking plot, but it’s a decent one. This could have been a good vampire story filled with violence, political intrigue, and the expected romance between Nikola and Asher. Unfortunately, there are several issues with the story, and there were many times I considered putting the book down.

PROS

Some nice secondary characters.

A good balance between politics and action.

An interesting vampire worldbuilding concept with small but refreshing differences.

CONS

The main characters are shallow, and many of their actions don’t align with their supposed ages. Nikola, who is 700 years old, acts like a teenager.

The power levels of the characters are wildly unbalanced and inconsistent. Asher, who is 30 years old, suddenly becomes the most powerful fighter of his clan without any real explanation.

There are too many explicit scenes for my taste.

In my opinion, the two-POV structure makes the story feel shallow and underdeveloped.

This story should have been a single book. Instead, it ends on a cliffhanger without a good reason to justify splitting it into two.

If you’re looking for an MM vampire story, you might give this one a try. I had some fun reading it, but as a bookworm, I’m more forgiving. For those who are selective about the books they read, I’d suggest using your time to explore better options.

This is the first book in a long, long time to leave me sitting there in stunned silence for minutes after reading the last page.

I can't believe this is a debut.

The storyline is compelling and interesting, with supporting characters that feel just as unique and interesting as our protagonists. I love the worldbuilding and how information is given in a way that doesn't drag down the pacing of the story, giving the reader what's needed to understand what's going on, and gradually explaining more of the world and the characters' histories as the plot progresses.

It's exactly the right amount of slow burn. The tension is perfect, and their attraction comes to fruition soon enough that we get to enjoy the payoff for more than just the last few pages of the story as some slow burns do (especially when they're the first book in a series). From the first time Nikola and Asher meet, sparks are flying. Their personalities are wildly incompatible and bring out an entirely different side of each other. Enemies to lovers is already amazing but an opposites attract pairing, too? I never stood a chance of not being obsessed with this.

Asher Black is one of the most interesting and complex characters I've read in the genre. His voice, both in dialogue and internally, is so distinct that you really feel like you've been thrust into his mind. He's not only a complete badass but has also endured hardships both emotional and physical, and still holds to his own moral compass that he enforces with his power as a Lord. There is so much more to him than meets the eye and it's an absolute treat to get more and more of his character revealed as you read. I don't care if he could gut me like a fish, Asher Black is now my son and I will protect him with my life.

I usually struggle with cliffhangers if the next book in the series isn't already out, but this book was so good and the ending just made me appreciate it that much more. I will be RUNNING to get the next one when it comes out. The Fear of The Dark is definitely among my top reads of the year so far.
