Where secrets linger in the river breeze, follow the trail of deception…
Step back in time to 1892, when in a picturesque riverfront town, newspaper reporter Josephine Felch is celebrating her marriage to Noah Elliott. But the joyous occasion takes a dark turn when Patrick, her best friend's adopted son, goes missing. The mystery deepens as Patrick is found disoriented in the woods, telling tales of a mysterious woman and a barrel that holds secrets.
As Jo grapples with the complexities of her expanding newspaper business, what started as a local mystery entangles her in a web of deception, smuggling, and dark alliances. Unyielding in her pursuit of truth, she uncovers a sinister trade in human lives and illicit narcotics that leads her to the port city of Victoria, British Columbia, where a shocking revelation awaits.
In the present day of this quaint town with a storied past, bookshop owner Olivia Crawford's life takes an unexpected turn when her well-meaning but overbearing mother, Stephanie, arrives from Boston to help plan Olivia’s wedding to Ethan Reed, director of the local historical preservation society.
As Olivia tries to sidestep her mother’s interventions, a seemingly worthless porcelain jar thrusts her into a perilous investigation, unraveling a century-old conspiracy that someone seems desperate to keep buried. The mystery intensifies as Olivia's bookshop is vandalized and her apartment is burglarized. Then her mother goes missing, and Olivia must piece together the puzzle before it’s too late.
A gripping dual-timeline historical mystery that weaves together the lives of two resilient women separated by time but connected by a town's buried secrets.
Vanessa Lind loves writing about strong women from the past, especially the ones who’ve got a secret or two. She enjoys heartfelt stories that keep readers turning pages with characters that aren’t easily forgotten.
Vanessa grew up in Illinois but has since migrated to the Pacific Northwest, where she lives near a town rich in history (and breweries). She has a serious book-buying problem, never turns down a cup of tea, and gets her best ideas while walking her boxer dog. Her goal in life, besides writing unforgettable books, is to be a good ancestor.
"The Smuggler's Secret" by Vanessa Lind which is part of the "Tidewater Chronicles" series was another 5-star read for me. I love a dual time period story when it's done right, where each character in their own story's timeline somehow reaches into the other time period and character story in a meaningful and important way. This book does that over and over again. Jo in the late 1800's is the owner of the local newspaper, so she's going against all societal norms already, but then she's a relentless reporter and goes after the news stories that often times put her in danger. These stories then go on to affect Olivia, who owns a bookshop in the same town in her present-day story. Olivia is another female who excels at finding the truth no matter what the consequences could be.
After discovering a young Chinese woman hiding in the woods Jo learns of the town's problematic opium and human trafficking ring going on right in her own backyard. There's also evidence of stolen Chinese artifacts being brought here and sold to the highest bidder and that along with the opium and people being smuggled in is being led and funded by the owner of the local shipping company. One of those artifacts a decorative jar that shows up in Olivia's home in present day as one of the items she inherited from her aunt. This is the kind of connection I love in my dual time period books. Olivia's quest to determine the jar's value and history takes her back to newspaper articles written by Jo who flushed out the truth and the culprits behind this smuggling ring at great danger to herself.
With each new story I get to delve deeper into Jo and Olivia's world, and I haven't been disappointed yet. This series is in my top 5 of favorites and anyone who loves a good dual time period historical fiction read needs to get their own copy of this book as well as the previous books in the series. I know you won't be disappointed. They're just that good. Happy Reading!
Ms. Lind's books always draw me in with mystery, history, dual time lines and plenty of twists and turns, and "The Smuggler's Secret" is no exception. The characters seemingly jump out of the book and entangle themselves into my mind, making the book hard to put down. In "The Smuggler's Secret", I enjoyed getting reacquainted with characters from previous stories and the interesting ties between the past and present that set the stage for a suspenseful mystery. Clues are interwoven between the two stories, and yet they're distinctively different without any confusion. When Jo and Noah marry in 1892, the joyous occasion is abruptly cut short by the disappearance of a young boy named Patrick as well as the discovery of a dead man. Investigating the area further, a young Chinese woman is found, secretly living in the woods. I enjoy how the past and present are tied together yet separately independent. Modern day Olivia "feels the past intertwining with the present" as she walks the same area in present time, preparing for her own wedding to Ethan. Added to the present time is the porcelain jar that Olivia is told is worthless, but is it? After her bookshop and apartment are vandalized and threats are left behind, the mystery and danger increases. Much carefully researched detail is included regarding Chinese immigration and smuggling. My favorite character is Noah's mother Hattie who has experience with code breaking from previous stories and comes to Jo's rescue in the storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed this clean, suspenseful mystery and am looking forward to Ms. Lind's forthcoming "Daughters of Liberty" series. I received a complimentary ARC of of this book and have voluntarily given my honest opinion in this review.
Chock full of Chinese history As an American citizen, I can honestly admit that the public school system did not educate us young’uns on sordid details of the various ethnic groups that contributed to the nation’s growth. Even though I visited San Francisco’s Chinatown as a child, the experience was more about the brightly colored toys on display and knowing that Grasshopper from “Kung Fu” passed through the area. We were done a disservice as youths, which is nothing compared to the traditions and cultures of peoples who sacrificed and paid the ultimate price for living on our shores. May we change that soon.
As in the previous books: *Journalistic integrity is about more than mere fact-checking. Reporting social injustices is the backbone of social programs for the needy and for righting wrongs done unto those who cannot speak up for themselves.
*The dual timeline provides readers with family histories. This tale includes a wee bit more than usual as there is a modern-day researcher among the cast. I’m reminded of a former co-worker from when I lived in Kansas - her ancestors had donated the land for the cemetery used by my family in Illinois! She had stories passed down to her about farm-life back in the day when her great-grandparents first arrived to town. Preservation is not only for buildings.
Words of wisdom: ‘When wounds go back generations, they are slow to heal.’ ‘If there’s money involved, there’s no telling what people will do to protect it.’
For more background on some of the characters, check out the two series related to this one: ‘Secrets of the Blue and Gray’ and ‘Daughters of Liberty’.
As with all of the other books in the Tidewater Chronicle series, Ms. Lind seamlessly weaves the past and present into a fascinating and entertaining mystery. This book, more than the others, seemed to have a special poignancy to it. Maybe it’s because the characters are moving on to different phases in their lives. Jo is a newlywed, and Olivia is getting married. In the past timeline, Jo is dealing with the possibility that the father of one of her best friends might be involved in some terrible crimes. The appearance of a young Chinese girl on the run from white slavers makes Jo aware of the terrible bigotry and apathy towards Chinese people, many of whom were brought into the country illegally for cheap labor and to fill bordellos. In the present time, Olivia is getting married, and her mother shows up to “help” with the wedding. In addition, Astoria is celebrating Chinese Heritage Week, which intertwines the two stories in a way that is gripping and so involving I literally couldn’t put the book down until I finished the last page. As always, Vanessa Lind’s research is impeccable. I felt like I was right there with Jo in 1890s Astoria. And I love how she shows the places (for example, the cannery) then and now. It’s one of my favorite parts of the series.

I love all things Vanessa Lind, and this does not disappoint; this is book five of five in The Tidewater Chronicles series. It is best to read these books in order to understand the storyline, but you do not have to. I love her dual timeline stories. In the late 1800's we have Josephine Felch owner and operator of the Astoria Evening Gazette; is married to Noah Elliott. Jo stumbles across a possible smuggling operation; importing Chinese men and young women along with opium. At present day we have Olivia Crawford, who owns and runs her own bookstore in Astoria Oregon. The town is celebrating Chinese Heritage week. Olivia's fiance Ethan; is the Director of The Historical Preservation Society. Their are talks of Chinese artifacts that were stolen. Not all are happy about about the Chinese Heritage week. Are all the truths coming out? Their are many connections between the late 1800's and her present day timeline. Vanessa Lind is an amazing writer, I can't wait to see what she writes next!!!
Once again Vanessa Lind has written a captivating historical fiction novel. While it can be read alone, I encourage you to read the entire series - it'll help develop a feel for the characters. The characters are well developed and showcase not just strong personalities but they go to show how even in different times - people didn't behave as they expected, such is the case with Josephine who stands out in my mind. "The Smuggler's Secret" is well written and shows not just how people would fight to stop injustices in history but also highlights how things were. You can tell the amount of research that went into making this book not just interesting as far as the plotline, but also accurate. With this book, you'll get your fill of historical fiction, a touch of romance and mystery set in a dual timeline novel. I had a difficult time putting this book down! I can't recommend it highly enough!
This series by Vanessa Lind is one that I am sad has ended. After finishing the 5th book in this series you cannot help but feel for the characters in this book. I never thought I would like historical fiction, but these are so well written with so much depth to the main female characters in both timelines that I could not put them down. The history of Astoria and the injustices that people had to suffer usually motivated by greed and power uncovered by Josephine breaks my heart. The same greed that existed in the past still continues on in the present as Olivia discovered in her investigation into a porcelain jar left to her by her aunt. How the two timelines past and present work together is what makes these novels excellent. Vanessa Lind's research and how she incorporates real life persona into her novels makes her reads even more interesting.

What a spectacular book. I loved it. Vanessa Lind has a a way with history, making it come alive and bringing you deep into the time period she writes about. The sense of place, the smells and the people, the waterfront..... All of it is so immersive and real feeling. Like you're there. Jo discovers that something very wrong is going on in her town of Astoria, and goes to great lengths to discover the secrets and lies, and make sure that it's all exposed so that justice can be served. With the help of a customs agent, a young Chinese girl, a dead Chinese man, and her aunt Hattie, Jo sets about on an adventure that will lead her to someone she had hoped never to see again. But I can't say more. You'll have to read this final book in the Tidewater Chronicles for yourself. You'll be glad you did. I received an ARC of this book and am leaving my voluntary review.
This book was an great read for me, I never really knew where it was headed. It is has a dual point of view- Josephine in 1892 and Olivia in modern day time, it flowed very well from one timeline to the next. I haven't read any other books in the series and still enjoyed it immensely. There was so much information about chinese immigration and of course smuggling. Ms Lind did amazing research for this book, so much so that I went down a few research rabbit holes myself. Having visited Astoria many times this story seemed so real and I could picture it all. I love a book that I learn new facts from but is also fun to read, this book did that for me!.

The last book on the Tidewater Chronicles is as good as you can expect. Great writing, extensive historical research and two amazing main characters that make this a hard to put down book. Both Olivia in the present and Jo in the past are involved in mysteries that takes them to dangerous situations, both are looking for the truth regardless of the personal consequences. Two very courageous young women who are very good at unraveling secrets and mysteries and who I believe would have been very good friends have they ever met. I loved this series and I am sad to let go of these special characters.
"The Smuggler's Secret" by Vanessa Lind is another wonderful novel that toggles back & forth between two centuries. This novel has lots of intrigue & mystery that's tied between the late 1800's & the present day. Josephine Felch uncovers a smuggling ring in the 1800's that's tied to a porcelain jar that Olivia Crawford owns in the present. The only way only way that Olivia is able to solve the present-day mystery of the porcelain jar is by investigating & unraveling the clues of the past & how her jar is tied to the smuggling ring of the 1800's. I highly recommend this novel to all those who enjoy reading these types of books.

I read just about everything Vanessa Lind writes so I've gotten to know these characters pretty well and this book shows some changes in one of the character's relationship with her mother. I liked this because it was very realistically done and it showed growth in each of the characters. I also love the two timelines and how they intersect. Its a great way to learn more about the local history. One other aspect I really respected was the theme of a reckoning with the past and owning up to our history's darker times.
A very good story!

Josephine marries her childhood Sweetheart Noah Elliott and on their wedding day the boy Patrick goes missing and once found talks about a woman and a barrel with secrets. Jo a journalist finds out about the smuggling of humans and illicit cargo. In the present day Olivia Crawford thinks a old jar worthless but it brings about her mother going missing and her shop and apartment being burglaries. A exciting read. I received this ARC copy via booksirans and leave a honest review. I recommend this book to other readers.
What a wonderful story! The realistic characters are intriguing and quickly pull you into their stories. The dual timeline plots are wonderfully detailed, making this a real page-turner. I found myself reading well into the night, turning page after page and telling myself, "Just a little more!" I simply couldn't put it down.
I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy of this excellent book and absolutely had to add it to my library! I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good tale of mystery and romance.
I've read both of the books in this series and really enjoyed them. The continuing stories of each of the characters in both timelines is seamless and the switch between timelines is unambiguous and clear. There is plenty of action and suspense and the stories were fully completed although I felt the denouement of the "current" timeline highly unlikely. I read all of the notes before and after and I appreciate the research that went into the author's storytelling.

I think this book might be my favorite of this series so far. Maybe it’s because I just visited the area and more able to imagine the ship wrecks, the smuggling and all of the other events. The author does a good job of correlating the past events to the more current time. However, I still do not like the author’s use of the present tense for the more recent time period. It makes it distracting. But otherwise, a good story, well researched, and I looked forward to reading it. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A wonderful ending to the Tidewater Chronicles! I so enjoyed spending more time with Jo and Olivia although this is a stand alone story that can be read without reading the previous 4 books in the series. This is a dual time line that takes place in the 1890's and present day. The author was masterful in tying the two stories together and especially wrapping up the series. Any of this author's series are highly recommended and I cannot wait until the next series begins!
I received a free copy from the author but the thoughts and opinions in this review are entirely my own.
This was an absolutely intriguing book. The author hooked me in right away and I was almost 60 pages in before I lifted my head and realized I wasn't in the book! This was really pleasurable for me as the intrigue and double time lines kept me guessing and full of angst throughout. I am going to read some of the other books in this series. I don't know if they are connected or not, I don't think it made a bit of difference in the story but I'm going to read the other books anyways 'cause if they are anywhere near as good as this one then I am golden!!
A dual timeline with both the 1800s and the present. A reader who loves the 1800 era would do well to read The Tidewater Chronicles Series by Vanessa Lind. It is riveting, action packed and so much fun reading/listening to the POV of the two protagonists in their respective eras. I loved each book in the series, but I believe The Smuggler's Secret may be my favorite to date... and I say to date as I hope that one day there will be another book in the series. The smuggling techniques and the identity of those behind them were a stroke of writing genius by this author.
This is a well written book with strong characters and an intriguing storyline. The author does a great job developing the story and pulled me in with the dual timeline. She does a terrific job bringing her story to life with her detailed and descriptive scenes and kept me glued to the pages from start to finish. I enjoyed and would recommend this book.

This dual timeline mystery was suspenseful and adventurous as truths are revealed and odd occurrences eventually explained. Jo is trying to find out what happened to a boy named Patrick while Olivia comes across a mysterious jar and must plan for her wedding. So much going on and emotionally charged moments will have any reader captivated wanting to know how it ends.

A superbly written book with twists and turns subtly interwoven between eras. I loved watching Olivia grow as a person and gaining her inner strength whilst also dealing with the family issues. Imagine my surprise that this was book 5 of the Tidewater Chronicles - I must find the others.
A must read to fill a lazy weekend or while on holiday.

Really enjoy the dual timeline aspect of the book because you get two very interesting characters to follow along. There are a few twists and turns as well. Plenty of drama and maybe a little suspense as well. The dual timelines are interesting because of the different things that happen in each different time. Brings in different characters and location. Good read.

I enjoyed this book. It was fun hearing about Jo and Olivia again. It was a pretty good mystery and while I did guess something, there was another surprise that I had not guessed. It is a pretty quick easy read, with chapters not very long. It is two interesting stories set in two different time periods, but in the same location, with them intertwining.
Fifth of this duel timeline series, The Smuggler's Secret is an excellent addition to this tale featuring the Oregon coast. Though I requested this novel from Book Sirens, I did not receive it but was able to access it after publishing on Kindle Unlimited. This novel would easily stand alone, but as a part of the Tidewater series, it is a keeper. Touching on the various aspects of life in seaside Oregon, this brings to light many of the aspects of abuse of 19th-century Chinese immigrants in the American West. It is a wake-up-call for true equality and what it takes for a community to achieve it. It is a lesson still to be learned in some Southwest border communities. I really enjoyed reading this book. I have read the tidewater chronicles series of books and found them all very interesting and entertaining. This book ties into the series extremely well. So many interesting characters and adventures in this book.

This is the second of this series that I have read. They are fun. Something in the past will leave something to be discovered and figured out. This novel has a Chinese artifact pointing to the past. Also, in the present, there is healing in relationships. I received an Advance review copy and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Another great read from Vanessa Lind. Really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. Once again the background provided some interesting historical points and the story itself kept me guessing. Absolutely loved it.
