There are some books that leave a lasting impact, and C is for Christian - An A to Z Treasury of Who We Are in Christ is one of them. This book isn’t just for kids; it's a treasure trove of truth for the whole family. With each letter of the alphabet, Alistair Begg guides young readers through who they are in Christ, exploring everything from "A" for "Adopted" to "Z" for "Zealous." The simplicity of the concepts paired with the depth of the truth makes this book perfect for little hearts and minds.

Illustrated by Emma Skerratt, the visuals are absolutely delightful. Each page is a burst of color, bringing each letter and truth to life with warmth and clarity. The illustrations are engaging and deeply meaningful, helping children grasp the foundational truths of their Christian identity in a way that is both accessible and beautiful.

Begg’s writing style is clear, straightforward, and filled with love. He doesn’t just present facts; he weaves in Scripture and doctrine in a way that is easy for children to grasp while still being spiritually rich. This isn’t a book to rush through—it’s one to savor, reflect on, and revisit again and again.

This book is so very much more than just a primer on the alphabet. It’s a resource that parents and children alike can return to again and again. I can already imagine it being passed down through generations as a cherished family heirloom. C is for Christian is about learning who we truly are in Christ. It’s a legacy book that will stay with your family for years to come.

I received a copy of C is for Christian via The Good Book Company’s Reviewer Program. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, pacing, content, and substance of this book, while also reflecting on how impactful it has been on me personally, ensuring transparency and reliability.

My wife Tammy and I have appreciated the ministry of Alistair Begg since first seeing him speak at the 1997 Ligonier National Conference. This is his first book for children, written for those for those 5-11 years old. It is beautifully illustrated by Emma Skerratt.
Begg writes that being a Christian is the most wonderful, exciting, life-changing thing anyone can be. But he asks, what is a Christian? What words can we use to describe what it means to call yourself a Christian? In this book, you’ll find 26 words that complete this sentence “A Christian is…”. Each of the 26 words begins with a different letter of the alphabet. Begg says to think of this as an A to Z of what a Christian is.
Each letter gets two pages in the book, beginning with a beautiful illustration, and followed with a Bible verse. For example, “A” is for “Adopted”. The Bible verse for adopted is Romans 8:15 “You have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry “Abba Father!” There is then a description of what adoption is. In the case of “A”, the description answers the question “When someone is adopted, what happens to them?” Following that are two questions for discussion and a closing prayer.
The book can be read devotionally, with one letter of the alphabet each day. It concludes with a listing of each letter of the alphabet as the child is asked if they can remember what went with each letter, and perhaps even what Bible verse went with each letter.
This will be a wonderful book to read with your children or grandchildren.

We treated this as a nightly devotional and it's not bad it just feels like it should not have been an "alphabet" book and suffers as a result. The fact that it's an alphabet book makes it feel like it's geared for pretty young kids however many of the devotionals (as I'm going to call them) were fairly abstract and the explanations definitely for what felt like a bit older kids, older than who I'd expect the target reader is for this type of book. It also suffers from the issue I see in almost all alphabet books which is that the words chosen for each letter do not make the letter's sound. "Citizen" makes the "s" sound, "Knitted Together" makes the "n" sound, "X - Loved" just doesn't make sense to a young child at all, and if I'm being extra picky a bunch of the vowel letters start with the long vowel sound instead of the more commonly heard short vowel sounds. Furthermore while trying to adhere to the alphabet it makes the concepts more confusing due to the words chosen. A lot of these feel incredibly abstract, even for an adult. "Taster" for example is a weird word to put on the top 26 spiritual concepts you want a kid to learn. I mean, don't get me wrong they're probably super on-board with tasting all kinds of weird stuff but that's not the point.

The illustrations in this book are absolutely stunning! These illustrations are by far my favorite that I have seen from this year. Also, there are no depictions of Christ in this book. Written to be a devotional for children, it takes you through each letter of the alphabet and introduces chidlren to the meaning of being a Christian A-Z. Example: A is for adopted, B is for branch, C is for Citizen etc..

Alistair Begg does a wonderful job expalining what it means to be a Christian with the gospel message throughout. This book is truly a treasury of theology and one I am so excited to have in our home library!

Each devotional page contains:

🖋Letter of the Alphabet
🖋Corresponding Scripture
🖋Explanation
🖋Questions
🖋Prayer

Thank you @thegoodbookcompanyusa for a copy of this book for my honest thoughts!

This is such a treasure of a book. Each alphabet page is beautifully illustrated and will entice children to visually explore the details facilitating impacting their mind with items and ideas that use that specific letter of the English alphabet. Liberal use of deeper pastel shades of the color wheel are artistically splashed across the pages.

This unique ABC book provides guidance and opportunity for parents to assist their young children to comprehend big ideas and deeper theological understanding to young minds.

I love this beautiful book and encourage families to make sure they have and use it with their children. I purchased a copy and gifted it to a young family and they love it.

I was provided a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.

My endorsement: “When children think about the marks of a Christian, they may first think of things Christians do. But it’s also essential for us to teach kids who Christians are. That’s exactly what Dr. Begg does in ‘C Is for Christian.’ This beautifully illustrated alphabet catechism will help the next generation learn and remember the Bible’s many vivid depictions of Christian identity.”

This picture book teaches kids about what it means to be a Christian. It goes through the alphabet from A to Z, introducing different concepts, such as Christians being adopted, forgiven, light, new creations, pilgrims, sent, upheld, and victorious. Each letter has a double-page spread devoted to it, and the first page features an illustration for that theme, along with a Bible verse. The next page includes a page-length devotional from Alistair Begg.

The illustrations from Emma Skerratt are beautiful and creative, and I really enjoyed them. Each illustration shows a letter and represents the associated idea in some way, like when the trail on a map shapes the letter 'P' for 'pilgrim.' With each devotional reading, Begg starts out by asking a question that relates to the concept, such as, "What is the longest journey you've ever been on, and where were you going?" After that, he explains that day's word, its connection to Scripture, and what it means for the Christian life. Each devotional ends with questions that families can discuss together, along with an example prayer.

The devotional readings are all simple and kid-friendly. Begg uses short sentences and explains unfamiliar words, and he also gives concrete examples to help kids understand abstract ideas. However, even with this simplified approach, he still delves into deep theological concepts. Some adults will find that they are learning new things along with their children.

At the end of the book, all of the alphabet letter illustrations and words appear together. The author challenges kids to remember what all of the letters represent, and encourages them to memorize the verses that go with each letter. On the publisher's website, there are additional free resources available to use with this book, including a printable poster of the letters and worksheets for each lesson.

C is for Christian is a wonderful resource. I would recommend this for Christian families and Sunday school contexts, and it is also suitable for proficient readers to work through on their own. This would make a great gift for a child who is a new believer, or who has just experienced another spiritual milestone. I also appreciate how ecumenical this book is. This covers basic, foundational information about what it means to be a Christian without getting into specific denominational beliefs, and it is appropriate for a broad audience.

I received a free copy from the publisher, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This was another book that caught my attention as another Christian child's book that couldn't be passed up.

C Is For Christian is most definitely not the book I was expecting it be when I ordered it. As a result I do recommend an older elementary or even middle school audience as readers.

The book starts with a nice little lesson that you can't just readily free describe some concepts with just a single word if you want to get the full picture.

From there the book provides each letter with a spread. On the left readers will find a full-page illustration that uses components of its artwork to form a capital of the focal letter followed by a Bible verse at the bottom. And on the right each page starts with one or two questions to help readers focus on the upcoming lesson.

These lessons are text-heavy but focus on providing readers with simple to grasp models and explanations of the page's subject. Readers will then find rather misplaced what the letter is meant to be focused on followed by two discussion questions and a prayer.

Given this format I honestly feel the book shouldn't be read from cover-to-cover but instead used as a daily Christian family study.

In the end the book is a fairly decent start on Christian concepts for young readers even while also being a bit on the challenging side.

{Thank you to @thegoodbookcompanyusa for my gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.}

May I just start by saying that this book is absolutely stunning? STUNNING. Some of my favorite illustrations I’ve seen in a picture book this year.

More than beautiful pictures, though, this book is full of beautiful truth. Using the alphabet, this book covers 26 things that Christians ARE—completely separate from things that Christians DO. I think this is really important! This book aims to teach children more about who believers are in Christ, and I believe it does this very well. 🙌🏻

Each letter and corresponding word, “adopted” for example, is accompanied by several short paragraphs defining this word and explaining how this word belongs to Christians. There are also discussion questions and prayers for each letter/word.

I immediately read through this book upon receiving it and am now using it in the morning with my two boys are part of our morning Bible and discipleship time at the breakfast table. It’s been such a fun edition. 🥰

Highly recommend!

Is it good to be a Christian? In C is for Christian, Alistair Begg presents an A to Z treasury of who we are in Christ.

Far and Deep

I love that this book begins with my favorite reality – that we are adopted by God. Each letter provides an opportunity to talk about Gospel realities with your children – N is for new creation, P is for pilgrim, S is for sent, and V is for victorious.

Each letter is accompanied by a quick devotion, short discussion questions, and a small prayer. The book will allow you to go surprisingly far and deep with your kids!

Great and Glorious

The illustrations by Emma Skerratt are gorgeous, with captivating colors and beautiful detail. They have a classic charm, making the entire book a wonderful work of art.

The message of this book is not only is it good to follow Jesus – but it is great, and it is glorious!

I received a media copy of C is for Christian and this is my honest review.

Using the alphabet as a guide and memory tool, this book helps teach 26 aspects of the Christian identity, of who the Christian is in Christ. With key verses to memorize, prompting and reflection questions, prayer scripts and a short devotional writing for each letter of the Alphabet, it provides a host of rich theology to inspire important conversations with kids. Each devotional writing is written to explain the corresponding key word in a way that beckons kids into the beauty that is life as a Christian living among the community of Christ’s church.
I appreciate the supplemental resources that are available on the GoodBook Website and I’m looking forward to using this resource as a part of our morning baskets and family worship time!

I absolutely love this treasury! With beautiful illustrations, thoughtful devotions, engaging questions, and heartfelt prayers, I am thrilled to be adding this to our Morning Time routine so that my girls can be even more encouraged to praise, worship, and give thanks to Jesus, but also to grow in rich theological truths.

I also love the free complementary resources that are provided on The Good Book Company’s website, which are perfect for parents and homeschoolers looking to further engage their children during the reading.

What a gem! My daughter received this as a Christmas present from a Sunday School teacher. It goes through the alphabet assigning a characteristic of a Christian to each letter. The explanations of even complex ideas were kid-friendly and clear. They naturally lead to sharing examples from our days or likely scenarios on their lives. We had so many great discussions with the kids as a result. Would read this to them again and again.

This book is such a blessing to our family! I've been going through an alphabet letter each day with my kids over breakfast, and it has been so edifying! The text is engaging and easy to understand (my kids are 7 and under), and the illustrations are beautiful. I love the questions to help us reflect what we've learnt each day, and we take turns praying for one another with the suggest prayer at the end. What has been also life-giving is that we began to memorise Scripture as a result of this book (there is a Bible verse for each letter). Thank you so much for this wonderful resource!

P.S. I've received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
